WITH EACH NEW YEAR, INSTEAD OF SETTING PERSONAL RESOLUTIONS, I REFINE MY TRAVEL WISH LIST. There are places that remain from the year prior — Greece, Morocco, South Africa — yet as we grow and evolve, so does our wanderlust. Topping my 2023 list? A dive trip with my 13-year-old son, who recently received his PADI certification. As such, the far-flung reefs of Little Cayman Island or the Blue Hole in Belize now top my list. And while it may only be February, time sure speeds up as the years tick by, which is why working with a Travel Advisor is as paramount as time with a business coach or personal trainer. I consider travel my most cherished mentor. Afterall, we have one shot to discover earth’s wild landscapes and different cultures — what a gift! CHECKING INTO THE RENOVATED BAB AL SHAMS DESERT RESORT & SPA

IN A CITY OF OVER-THE-TOP EVERYTHING, IT CAN BE DIFFICULT TO STAND OUT. But despite sharing a home with the world’s tallest building, indoor ski slopes, and the world’s finest hotels (complete with a gold leaf covering 19,000-square-feet of space), Bab Al Shams on the edge of Dubai still manages to evoke a sense of wonderment and awe. In part, that’s because when this resort reopens in early 2023, it will do so as the first property in the Rare Finds portfolio, a collection of diverse and distinct properties recognized for their proximity to rich culture, soul-rattling experiences, and genuine connection to the customs and history of their environment.

RENOVATION: Having earned its reputation as one of Dubai’s most sought-after desert escapes, Bab Al Shams has long been preferred by travelers seeking an authentic desert destination. The hotel is removed enough from the city’s hustle and bustle that gazelles, Arabian oryx, and other wildlife are frequently spotted, and the resort is framed by the surrounding sand dunes. This relaxed and unrushed vibe will remain when the resort reopens in the spring of 2023 to unveil a new look after nearly a year of extensive renovations. It will pay homage to local history, resembling a revived rural Arab village set against the backdrop of Dubai’s desert landscape. But the rooms, restaurants, and common spaces will celebrate a newly refined aesthetic and subtle opulence, punctuated by redefined experiences.

RECREATION: Some of those unique experiences include a robust selection of leisure and play options. The desert’s black canopy is ideal for star gazing with a local astronomer. During the daytime, the expansive vistas of sand and sky are best viewed from atop a camel’s back. A VIKING VOYAGE CELEBRATES ANTARCTICA’S HARD-TO-REACH ALLURE.

Six stateroom categories range from 222-1,223 square feet. All have kingsized beds and ensuite bathrooms equipped with glass-enclosed showers and heated floors. A unique floor-to-

ceiling drying closet with circulating warm air stands at the ready to dry clothing and expedition gear between activities.

No matter which category guests choose from, each stateroom is specially designed to maximize exposure to the views, sans prolonged exposure to the elements. Voyagers can stand in awe of the polar landscapes, deep blue Antarctic Ocean, and the resident creatures that may appear right from their staterooms’ Nordic balconies. EXPLORING ARGENTINA IS LIKE DISCOVERING MANY COUNTRIES IN ONE. You’ll find tropical jungles and wetlands in the northeast, dry valleys and high mountain peaks in the Andean region to the west, fertile plains in the central Pampas, and vast Patagonian steppes reaching towards Antarctica. As the eighth largest country in the world, Argentina is enormous — roughly the size of India! Due to the long distances between regions and limited time, I visited two locales I’d yet to experience: the Northwest and Patagonia. I also couldn’t help myself and added on a few days in Buenos Aires, the country’s capital. Here are my top takeaways to a country that already has me yearning for a return trip.

LATIN AMERICA’S HEART OF CULTURAL PURSUITS

Most trips to Argentina begin and end in Buenos Aires. This sprawling metropolis located at the mouth of the River Plate is where 15 million-plus inhabitants (roughly one out of every three Argentines) reside. The most European of all South American capitals, Buenos Aires is sophisticated and always in motion. The city combines the architecture of Paris and Madrid with an irrepressible Latin American spirit. You’ll experience nonstop traffic, late hours, decadent dining, festive nightlife, and worldclass arts and culture.

Buenos Aires is also a collection of distinct neighborhoods. The most notable include the stately Centro, a historic district on the edge of the river where you will find the Cabildo, an 18 th-century town hall, Casa Rosada (Argentina’s Presidential Palace), and Plaza de Mayo, where Argentines protest and celebrate special occasions. Raffish La Boca put Buenos Aires on the map, considered the first city port and the birthplace of tango. Walk down colorful El Caminito and admire the street art. Explore the charming cobblestone streets of San Telmo in search of

antiques and the perfect empanada, a pastry filled with meat and savory ingredients. Don’t miss La Recoleta, the elegant neighborhood of Argentina’s elite, where you’ll find opulent palaces, chic apartment buildings, and enticing shopping and dining. Visit the namesake cemetery, the burial place of Argentina’s wealthy and powerful, including Eva Perón. Continue to Palermo and stroll the parks, and then wander through its trendy Soho and Hollywood subdivisions lined with hip restaurants, bars, and stylish shops. While in Palermo, visit the Eva Perón Museum for a survey of her life and legacy. Whether you are for or against peronismo , learning about the history of Juan Domingo Perón and his famous wife is essential to understand today’s Argentina. into a book lover’s temple. And for the culinary traveler, the capital is celebrated for its diverse and high-quality dining, particularly the abundant grass-fed beef, considered by many the finest on the globe.

THE NORTHWEST

COLORFUL PANORAMAS AND THE LIVING LEGACY OF ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS

From Buenos Aires, I flew to Salta, the premier gateway to Argentina’s noroeste . Here you’ll find stunning landscapes, snow-covered mountains, colonial towns, spectacular deserts, and rock formations, and above all, the living heritage of ancient indigenous civilizations. Salta’s spirit is tied to the altiplano of Bolivia and Perú, not distant Buenos Aires. The ideal way to experience the northwest is with an expert guide who knows the secrets of this hardscrabble land and a driver who can navigate the often unpaved and narrow roads.

The sights in this region are of top note. In the Quebrada de las Conchas, wander inside a 60-foot sandstone amphitheater carved by wind and water and featuring perfect

acoustics. Hike rocky paths covered by forests of giant cactus ( cardones ) in the highlands of Cachi or explore the otherworldly landscapes of Angastaco Nature Reserve. Sample some of the finest wines in Argentina, especially Malbecs and Torrontés whites in Cafayate’s vineyards. Ride the “Train to the Clouds,” one of the highest in the world, with sections reaching 14,200 feet above sea level. An engineering feat, this famous railway can be experienced in one day.

Travel north to Jujuy province to see natural wonders like the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This northsouth valley — a key commercial link during the Spanish colonial period — is known for charming towns and emblematic vistas. Another highlight? The Serranía del Hornocal, best seen in the afternoon. Layers of eroded limestone and exposed minerals have created chromatic mountainsides and the multicolored rocks are the result of being exposed to the elements over millennia. Another must: Salinas Grandes. The enormous salt flat extends as far as the horizon and is the remains of an ancient lake (now dry). Best of all? The enchanting villages of Molinos, Cachi, and Uquía. These settlements, some dating back to the 16th Century, are frozen in time and offer a window into the area’s rich and storied past. Spend time in Salta, a pleasant city of colonial architecture featuring grand churches painted red and pink, a café-lined central plaza, and the Museum of High Altitude (MAAM), where you’ll find perfectly preserved Inca mummies.

PATAGONIA WILD, UNTRAMMELED, AND BREATHTAKING

This remote region of endless landscapes, windswept plains, and towering mountains has enchanted travelers of all stripes, including Magellan, Butch Cassidy, and Charles Darwin. The top highlight in Patagonia is Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, home to jagged peaks, awe-inspiring scenery, and world-class hiking trails. This National Park has two focal points: The northern town of El Chaltén (the trekking capital of South America), and the southern El Calafate, the gateway to the region and main airport.

Stay at the newly opened Explora Lodge near El Chaltén, the ultimate basecamp to explore the northern region. The lodge is located within the conservation reserve of Los Huemules and frames fantastic views of the Electric Valley and Marconi Glacier. Of the many hikes offered by Explora, the most sought-after is the trek to Laguna de Los Tres for the best views of Mount Fitz Roy, Argentina’s Matterhorn. This challenging, 15mile hike will demand every ounce of energy but is well worth the effort. The day I hiked this trail we had good weather, so I was able to see splendid Mount Fitz Roy from the edge of the lagoon, which was still frozen in Patagonia’s early spring. The sense of accomplishment and

rush of emotions felt when reaching Laguna de Los Tres is unforgettable. At the south end of the park is the star attraction: Perito Moreno Glacier, an arm of the Patagonian Icefield. This notable glacier is easily accessed and is constantly advancing, causing massive chunks of ice calving from its front walls. There are many ways to experience the wonder and grandeur of Perito Moreno Glacier: trekking across the ice, cruising or kayaking on the glacial lake, or walking down elevated boardwalks for great views of massive ice formations over three miles wide. Halfway between El Calafate and the glacier is EOLO, the intimate Relais & Chateaux Lodge embodying the spirit of Patagonia and the best place to stay in this area. This serene and warmhearted lodge, set on a hill within a vast estate, was the perfect place to end my journey.

On the last night before flying home, I searched the night sky until I found the Southern Cross (always a good sign!). My trip to Argentina had come to an end, and my wish for a great adventure had come true.

SSUSTAINABLE TRAVEL, ECOTOURISM, ENVIRONMENTAL VACATIONS — BUZZY TERMS

LIKE THESE, ONCE CONSIDERED PROGRESSIVE AND COMMENDABLE — CAN SOMETIMES BECOME OVERLY EMPLOYED. Yet Natural Habitat Adventures, the world’s first carbon-neutral tour company and the first travel outfitter to pull off a zero-waste trip , is proving to the industry it can be done. The company is hyper focused on doing good versus pontificating about it.

Perhaps this is to be expected of a company that partners with World Wildlife Fund (WWF). You can’t really place the leading environmental organization’s iconic panda logo next to yours if you aren’t able to justify the association. Even so, Nat Hab, as it’s often referred to by travelers, seems to be on a continual quest to one-up itself environmentally.

How so? For starters, the company pays to offset 100 percent of the carbon emissions from each trip by funding carbon reduction programs all

over the world. Investing in renewable energy sources in India, protecting forests in Zimbabwe, and purchasing efficient cook stoves for villagers in Rwanda are just a few examples. While admirable, Nat Hab readily admits carbon neutrality is the floor, not the ceiling, and community impact must be part of the foundation.

This became obvious to me on two recent trips I had the pleasure of experiencing: one to the company’s newest offering, brown bear viewing in Alaska’s remote Lake Clark National Park, and another to its longest running adventure, a polar bear safari in Churchill, Canada.

ALASKA The Experience

Accessible only by air or by sea, no roads lead to Lake Clark National Park. There’s also no electricity, cell service, or Wi-Fi. But, if you’re doing it right, none of those things are missed. The antics of the area’s brown bears, the “pinch me, this can’t be real” scenery, and the engaging dialogue with guides provide more entertainment, inspiration, and education than any website or Netflix special.

The trip begins in Homer, Alaska, where seven passengers board a small bush plane (the kind where you’re assigned a seat based on your weight and can expect to get intimately familiar with the tops of your kneecaps), for a 45-minute scenic flight across the Cook Inlet. Before landing on the beach in front of Nat Hab’s Bear Camp, our pilot had to overshoot the landing and circle back. “We don’t want to disturb that mom and her cubs,” we heard him explain in our headsets. Soon enough, mama bear’s stroll along the beach came to an end, allowing us to land and meet up with the seven other humans we’d be spending the next few days with.

Located within Lake Clark National Park, Bear Camp encompasses a handful of private ocean-front acres on the Alaskan coastline. Nat Hab acquired the land less than one year ago and committed to ensuring an intimate bear-viewing experience in nature’s uninhabited — and largely uninhabitable — wild.

Tented cabins offer a cozy escape from the elements when needed, but given the nearly 18 hours of daylight during an Alaskan summer, a lot of time is spent bear viewing on the elevated platforms and observation decks, and walking through meadows and forests seemingly straight from a children’s novel that begins with, “Once upon a time …”

The Impact

The bush camp is 100 percent off the grid; a solar powered, rainwater collecting, composting, enclave that manages to feel more luxury than hippie — a proverbial pristine paradise that almost wasn’t.

Several years ago, a Canadian company called Northern Dynasty Minerals proposed the Pebble Mine project — a gold and copper mine that would destroy crucial denning areas and poison the salmon runs of Bristol Bay — which would decimate the area’s bear population.

Plans for Pebble Mine included an open pit mine roughly six football fields deep and covering more than a square mile. A 270-megawatt power plant, 165-mile natural-gas pipeline, and 82 miles of road were also intended. Toxic mine tailings were to be dumped in nearby ponds.

It’s hard to believe this proposal was ever probable. Fortunately, for now, plans are halted, in large part due to the activism of Nat Hab guides and WWF, both of which played a major role in stopping the mine. Together, they continue to monitor the threat and work with local native communities and administrations to protect the ecosystem.

CANADA The Experience

It can be difficult to watch a polar bear roll around on its back in Canada’s sub-arctic tundra, struggling to sit upright and think anything but, “Awwww.”

When I witnessed a pudgy white bear doing this, paws flailing about, I couldn’t help but suggest he was auditioning for a Coca Cola commercial. But when that same bear silently covered 100 yards in less than ten seconds to approach our Polar Rover, I changed my mind. Sure, he was still adorable. But his paws were the size of snowshoes and when he yawned, I was certain a bowling ball could fit in his mouth. Observations that reminded me cuteness is not a disqualifier for being a lethal hunter.

On our first day in the tundra our group got lucky with two curious bears, one of which stood on its hind legs and stretched close to nine feet tall to get a better look at the people safely perched atop the vehicle. When the bear walked underneath our Polar Rover and stood to sniff the bottom of my boots through the grated steel-mesh floor, I silently prayed I hadn’t stepped in seal blubber.

As one of only two companies to hold an exclusive

permit allowing access to the Churchill Wildlife Management Area, Nat Hab can safely provide these unforgettable encounters with one of the world’s top apex predators. And while polar bears are certainly the main attraction, the tundra is home to several other species uniquely adapted for the severe environment, including arctic fox, snowy owls, and willow ptarmigans who comically appear to be strutting down a catwalk, showing off the latest in footwear fashion.

The Impact

Polar bears are the poster child for climate change, so it’s little wonder Nat Hab’s initiatives are focused on protecting the bears and their environment, which includes the small town of Churchill. Neighboring the Hudson Bay, Churchill is home to roughly 900 humans. At times, the lines between town and tundra are blurred, and it’s not uncommon for bears to wonder into the city limits. “It’s the only place in the world where if a stranger speeds towards you and opens the car door and yells, ‘get in!’ you do it,” Nat Hab’s Director of Travel Industry Relations, Don Martinson, told our group.

When bears roam too close to town, conservation officers try to scare them off with loud noises, flares, and if needed, rubber bullets. If those measures fail, bears are trapped, consciously sedated, and sentenced to a few weeks in what is colloquially referred to as “polar bear jail,” where they’re given nothing but a block of ice for the duration of their stay. It might sound harsh, but the goal is to ensure the polar bear equivalent of a one-star Yelp review.

“We don’t want them associating humans with food,” explained our guide, Garrett Fache. “We want the experience to be harmlessly unpleasant.”

When their stint is up, bears are again consciously sedated and flown about 50 miles away in a net that dangles from a helicopter. This prison reform program is successful, but pricey. Between pilot time, helicopter rental, fuel, and other expenses, each release can cost upwards of $3,000 — a tab regularly picked up by Nat Hab.

These ongoing efforts make it clear; Nat Hab isn’t your average sustainability-driven company. Equally of note, its “playground” is even more reason to return, be it for the alpenglow, unexpected bear encounters, or the truly transformative nature of travel.

First, you have to respect the wildlife, be patient, and wait for the animals to become used to your presence (which is not difficult in the Galápagos). You’ll want the right gear: A telephoto lens is a must for wildlife photography, but you should never forget a wide-angle lens to capture the essence of the habitats and the beautiful landscapes of the islands.

IS THERE A PARTICULAR EXPERIENCE THAT ALWAYS SURPRISES OR AMAZES TRAVELERS?

The innocence of a sea lion pup, or a small bird flying into a camera lens to watch from the other side. Flocks of birds will plunge-dive in front of a boat, plus birds will do their courtship dances in front of a group of visitors—showing no fear at all.
