The Six Allegories of Beirut
01.
On August 2020, one of the warehouses in port Beirut exploded causing a catastrophic damage to the entire city. In the midst of a supernatural disaster, Architecture, which is meant to guarantee human protection, becomes completely powerless. This project is an investigation and speculation on the role of architecture in such post-traumatic occasion. The proposed "allegories" does not manifest any programs nor functions, but represents only the cyclical process of everyday lives - ie: destruction and construction. Drawings as a way of knowing "Trauma"
The project began by analyzing one's individual trauma. To approach the unconscious memory, series of pencil drawings were conducted, later, becoming a dominant method of analysis, research, representation and design. The process of pencil drawing and its product introduced the "simultaneity of destruction and construction" as a significant idea of trauma (pencils die out while drawing remains, memories get forgotten while some gets intensified). The process of drawing not only became a representation, but the very idea of "Trauma" itself.. 03

Cycle of Destruction and Construction
Henri Lefebvre defined Everyday Lives as simultaneity of "Cyclical construction and linear destruction". Despite its continuous "destruction" of the built environment from civil war, religious conflict to catastrophic explosion, people in Beirut have always found a way to "construct" their Everyday Lives. It is in fact within this parallelism between Trauma and Everyday Lives, and the "simultaneity of destruction and construction" that manifests the beauty of the quotidian. The physical model is an exploration on this simultaneous process. 05

Intervention on 6 Debris in the Port
The cyclical nature of "destruction and construction", a significant quality identified within the process of Everyday Lives, is what allows the constant overcoming of the Trauma in Beirut. In order to relate Architecture to this process, 6 debris that retained the quality of both destruction and construction (ambivalent state between being broken and built) were chosen as the site of intervention. Fragmented remains of warehouses, half-broken silo, mashed up cargo blocks became the initiating point of the 6 allegories on the Everyday Lives of Beirut. 07

A MOSQUE FOR MILLION SPECIES
6 Allegories on the Everyday Lives of Beirut The 6 proposals negates every aspect of architectural intention; no program, no function, no client. Instead, it materializes the "pure process" of overcoming the Trauma, ie; the constant cycle of destruction and construction. In the Post-traumatic landscape, a physical idea of "Architecture" cannot sustain it's autonomy without being hypocritical. Rather, the purpose of Architecture here is to celebrate the beauty of the intermittent progression of Everyday Lives, stimulating an open-ended imagination through it's architectural medium. Architecture, becomes an allegory. 09

Ongoing climate crisis calls for a radical change in both the spatial and pedagogical structure of school education. Upcoming generation will have to acquire different knowledge in dealing with resources, waste, environment, while simultaneously dismantling the modern spatial logic that facilitates further carbon usage. As a case-study, the project repurposes one of the "Open Street Learning" site in Brooklyn as a permanent site for education, introducing both spatial and pedagogical strategy for occupation, while subverting modern conception of street spaces. Pre-colonial Dirt-paths
Analysis: Stratification of the Street "Liquid Modernity", coined by Zygmunt Bauman depicts the characteristics of modern street that facilitates smooth transportation of various resources; cars, trains, electricity, sewage and even pedestrians. Such qualities have been achieved by series of stratification that divides the streets into certain usages, erasing the actual organicity and opportunities that could happen in the space. The analysis identifies regulations, infrastructures that de-humanizes the street, while depicting the organic resources that could be used for future education. 15

Cruciform Module as an Act of Occupation
In order to "slow down" both the physical and conceptual fluidity of the modern street, the project proposes a cruciform module as a spatial strategy for occupation. The module allows various ways of expansion through self-build, that is integrated within the curriculum of the nearby elementary school, PS154. The module captures the local resources that would otherwise be processed as waste. The captured resources will foster an educational program, that allows students to understand the sustainable cycle and management of local materials. Portfolio by Taku Samejima

Out in the Street: Radical Occupation
In 2050, the intermediary space between housings in Brooklyn, that was originally known as "Roads" for vehicles, are now occupied by local communities and students from the nearby elementary school. Farming classes, Petting zoo, compost tutorials, and various school programs are now happening on the street, fostering the local knowledge as a communitywide effort. As the elementary school spills out on to the street, education becomes a community resource. Here, the neighbors are simultaneously the teacher and the student. 19

The Hover

"The Hover" is an Artist Center proposed on a sloped hill adjacent to a local river, located in East Rock, New Haven. The project incorporates multi scaled programs varying from Individual Artist Studios to Public Gallery, Auditorium and Event spaces, offering a creative platform for local artists and neighboring communities. As an anti-thesis to a conventional "white cube", the project investigates the potential of architectural spaces as a "stimulus of inspiration", actively engaging with the creative impetus of each artists and visitors. Framing, Poche, Piloti...
The project examines the relationship between three specific "architectural language", which are "Framing", "Poche" and "Piloti".This un-conventional hybridization responds to the context by reserving the riverfront space as a "piloti" for community activities, while the elevated square mass protrudes out from the hill, framing three individual objects containing public functions. The poched periphery incorporates artist programs by carving out variety of spaces with an individual balcony, allowing each of the artists to own their specific views. 23

Open Gallery: Mediator of Public and Private The space between the Artist studios on the periphery and the protruding objects is reserved for Open gallery where public audience can access from the Grand staircase connected to the existing trail. Each protruding objects contain public functions including Auditorium, Childcare room, which expresses a distinguished spatial quality from the Open gallery, allowing the visitor to experience a dramatic spatial transition within a single building. Thus, the Open gallery functions as an integrative mediation between private artist studios and public programs. 25

Artist Studios for Creative Inspiration
The artist studios located on the periphery of this building are spaces for "Creative Inspiration", where artists are immersed into various lighting conditions provided by Confetti window openings. The private balconies assigned to each of the studios, allow each of the artists to occupy the view for another source of inspiration, that is the surrounding nature. These studio spaces challenge the conventional and neutral "White cube studios", by positively incorporating diversity of lighting, texture, color conditions to create varieties of spatial conditions. 27

According to Yi-Hu-Tuan, humans identify spaces through combination of four individual senses, that is Vision, Touch, Hearing and Scent. Using such premise, this project explores a speculative form of architecture, where four types of individuals that has only one of each senses, dwell under the same roof, helping each other to successfully make living. The project questions the current mode of architecture dominated by "Vision", and re-imagines a spatial environment where all human senses actively engage in our daily lives. After the invention of Perspective by Brunelleschi, "Vision" has been dominantly used both for constructing and percieving spaces in Architecture. Such monopolization of Vision created spaces that are highly insensitive to other senses, mutually transforming human themselves as a being that are muted to "minor" senses. The project reinvents series of design languages that incorporate crucial factors for initiating such senses (i.e.Air, Steam, Textures, Noise...etc), and constructs an environment that are guided through mutual interacton of these four senses. Complementary Relationship of Individuals
The dwelling is composed by series of "Trigger moments", where a specific person's activity initiates a certain form of stimulus for other person's senses. Through these continuous nodes of such moments, each individuals construct a complementary relationship with others, allowing all the residents to make daily living as a whole. Thus, each of the senses maintain an equal importance within this dwelling, creating an environment which challenges the current spatial paradigm that are entirely dominated by visionary senses. 33

Threshold: Blends and Cracks
The threshold of the complex blends with the surrounding environment through texture, material and vegetation. However, the threshold shows a "cracking moment", such as walls and vegetation eroding into the interior, huge gap generating sounds. These moments of abrupt disjunction in the threshold are the entrances for the specific individuals, helping to identify the entrance through contrast with the surrounding environment and interior. Each of the Architectural thresholds manifest a complex intertwining of various senses, reshaping the spatial configuration that would otherwise be homogenous if vision was the dominant sense.

The Soundtrapper
05.
"The Soundtrapper" is a music hall constructed by 4560 equally thin walls, driven by a hypothesis that "Every music halls have 16% of poche ratio compared to the site area". Instead of qualitatively defining the form of the music hall, the project radically expresses this quantitative nature of such typologies, which were identified throughout previous examples. The extraordinary amount of walls resulted in creating an environment where any sort of sound will be decomposed and diffused by continuous reflection, eventually been trapped, lost somewhere in the interior. Music Hall, re-defined by the Poche ratio Series of analysis depicted a common characteristic shared among previous examples of music halls: they all had 16% of poche ratio compared to the site. Building up on this observation, this building was generated by quantitatively dispersing the required area of poche using equally thin panels on the site. The overall form of the building takes a circular shape, which the arrangement of each walls are programmed to be denser on the periphery and sparser on the center. Each walls dissipate the source sound in complete random manner that would be otherwise homogenous in a conventional setting. 16%

Architecture as Phenomenal Mediator
In this building, most of the walls are transparent making them function as a series of invisible mediator of various sounds generated at the hall. While the building is planned through the logic of "Poche", the phenomenal sound turns into the dominant feature of spatial cognition, where the dissipated sound becomes the signifer of particular spaces. The Architecture dissapears in the background by bringing sound to the forefront, which essentially is the purpose of music halls, to let people immerse into the "mystery" of sound. 41

"Ori-Ori-An" is a tea-ceremony house entirely made of recycled steel hangers, collected from the local neighborhood. The combination of material flexibility and unique geometry of steel hangers provided an opportunity to create a foldable and feasible unit structure. Hanger and the pattern of "Aya < 綾 >"
The concept of the tea-ceremony house was initially thought of as "Aya", which indicates a Japanese traditional pattern of fabric weaving. Based on this idea, series of studies in choosing the main structural material were conducted on the criteria of both "low-cost" and "light weight". Eventually, we have identified that a used steel hanger shows both flexibility and a certain amount of rigidity despite of its light structure, while showing a beautiful woven pattern when they are aggregated, woven into a structural whole. 45

Foldable and Transportable Structure
By meshing each of the hangers based on the logic of its geometry, a structural unit in the shape of cruciform combined with 8 hangers were identified. The entire structure was then proposed as an aggregation of these base units, loosely clutched with each other by the hook of the hangers. Because of this loose joint, the structure became both foldable and expandable, as well as transportable due to its light weight, achieving a rather ephemeral quality that is essentially an inherited characteristic of Japanese tea-ceremony houses. 47

Border, Plaza, or Pomerium...
07.
"Border, Plaza, or Pomerium" re-imagines the form of borderline between US and Mexico. The exclusive wall constructed by the Trump administration not only divided people, but also separated various animals living on site, causing 93 species to be endangered within 4 years. Responding to this, the project envisions to insert a circular plaza for human beings between the border wall, while reconnecting animal species through an intentionally given gap between the proposed building. The border becomes a reunion space for both human and non-humans. Reconnecting Human and Non-humans
The project is formed by series of architectural objects in a circular form, which each of the objects are given slight gap so that smaller non-human species can trespass freely. The focal point of the circle is a plaza for reunion, encircled by series of programs, including passport center, immigration center, rainwater collection/reservoir and Museum of endangered species. The proposal will be inserted between the current border wall, functioning as a critical node for both human and non-human reconnection. 51

Ecological Pomerium: the Future Ruin
The proposed plaza will create a concentration of local biodiversity by acting as a significant node for non-human reunion. Inspired by the Roman idea of "Pomerium" (a stone object that marks the borderline) the plaza will turn into an "Ecological Pomerium" as an anti-thesis to the current border wall that divides every living beings. Hoping that the border will be dismantled within the next 50 years, the project is designed to be a "future ruin", that marks the location of former borderline that should never be forgotten. 53

As houses are embodied with more complex and diverse programs, we often overlook the fact that our daily rituals revolve around 4 furnitures: chair, table, bed and toilet. While our houses are increasingly isolated in the absence of communal life, the fundamental rituals we left with are constituted by our domestic routines and habits. Seemingly insignificant furnitures become the world to us, providing us with both physical and psychological means of Home. 4 furnitures as 4 spatial focal points
The 4 furnitures act as an apparatus of a domestic behavior of working, dining, sleeping, and cleaning respectively. Such rituals are placed at 4 focal points along a continuous circulation loop, nested within tailored spaces for each corresponding performance. A continuous developable surface on the exterior echoes the interior circulation loop, wrapping around the house while delineating the infinite cycle of daily rituals. A House for 4 Furnitures amplifies our essentials and reminds us the monumental importance of our domestic rituals. 57
