NOVAK DJOKOVIC

FROM WAR TO THE TOP OF THE WORLD

THE HISTORY OF NOVAK DJOKOVIC By Magali Magalhães & Monica José

I

t was the year of 1993. In the United Kingdom, American tennis player Pete Sampras won Wimbledon for the first time, becoming a remarkable name in the history of world tennis. Still in Europe, but a little distant from London, a six-year-old boy felt an uncontrollable emotion while watching on TV the images of Sampras’ unforgettable victory. The scene took place on the mountains in the South of Serbia, in a small town named Kopaonik. The young boy had just started playing tennis and kept in mind the memories of the inspiring shots he watched on TV that

day. The child was Novak Djokovic and at that moment he knew exactly what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. The practicing routine took its course but it didn’t seem to be a problem once Novak kept falling for the sport day after day, match after match. Back then, there weren’t any sport traditions in Djokovic’s family; neither there were people interested in tennis. Nevertheless, the boy would insist on his future dreams with extreme dedication. He wanted to become as great as his idol Pete Sampras.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC

BOLDNESS AND DREAMS The path of one of the greatest tennis players in activity was built out of resilience, strength and willpower. Nole, as he’s widely known, was born in 1987 in Belgrade, Serbia – former Yugoslavia. The war and serious political problems that affected his country were part of the athlete’s childhood. Djokovic usually talks about some of the dark moments he went through in that period, such as the time he had to be stuck in a basement during some of the bombings that destroyed the city. He

also tells how the court where he used to play is now marked by bullet holes on the walls. However, when he thinks of his childhood, Nole recognizes that the hard times and the war made him even stronger. In the beginning of his teenage years, the severe situation in Belgrade forced him to leave his country in order to keep searching for his dream. As soon as he started to show his outstanding skills, he moved to Germany and by the age of 12 he was in Munich working hard to be a unique tennis player.

A METEORIC RISE It didn’t take a lot of time for Djokovic’s significant victories. In 2006, at 19, he won his first ATP title. The following year, he was already amongst the top ten tennis players of the world and in 2008, he was definitely recognized as one of the greatest athletes of current times. By the way, it was in that same year that Nole became the youngest tennis player in history to reach the semi-finals in all four Grand Slam events. And after beating Federer and Tsonga, he started 2008 as the champion of the Australian Open. By the end of the year, he would still win the title of the Masters Cup. In 2009 he reached ten finals and won five titles. It was the moment to guarantee his name in the “Big Four” – group formed by the great players Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and now Djokovic. Together, these four athletes have dominated tennis for the last decade.

TALK Miami 11

NOVAK DJOKOVIC

REACHING THE TOP AND KEEPING THINGS COOL Djokovic is currently the number one tennis player of the world and that condition has been confirmed since 2011. Even though Nadal and Federer have also reached the position, it’s the Serbian athlete who has dominated that status since then. In 2011, he won three out of the four Grand Slam events. Besides that, he was the champion of five Masters 1000. Pete Sampras, his biggest inspiration, has stated that Djokovic’s 2011 season was the best one he had ever seen so far. But Nole would

do even better in 2015. That year, he won 3 Grand Slam titles again and six more Masters, reaching the record score on the ATP ranking. So far, Djokovic has won the Australian Open seven times (he’s the biggest winner of the tournament), Wimbledon four times, the U.S. Open three times and one French Open. That makes a total of 15 titles of Grand Slam tournaments in his career. Nole has surpassed his idol Pete Sampras, who has won 14 titles. He hasn’t reached Nadal (17 titles) and Federer (20 titles) though.

TALENT AND PHILANTHROPY Novak Djokovic is one of the most admired and respected sportspeople of the world and that’s not only because of his incredible talent on the courts. Nole is also a very extroverted guy and his jokes have become part of his show. He has pretended to be a doctor, has fried an egg on the court of Australian Open and has danced with lots of fans during some promotional events. Not to mention his famous impersonations! Maria Sharapova, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have been “recreated” by the Serbian athlete.

For the last ten years, the famous tennis player - and wife Jelena - has taken part of his time to dedicate to philanthropic works, focused on young children development. The Novak Djokovic Foundation values that investing in early childhood education is much more important than investing in a future rehabilitation process. We had the opportunity to talk to Jelena Djokovic, Co-founder and Global CEO of Novak Djokovic Foundation.

TALK Miami 12

NOVAK DJOKOVIC

INTERVIEW

We understand that child development is a great part of what you do, through projects stimulating education and sporting activities, but also by creating infrastructure for those children to have the means to achieve maximum potential. Why is it so important to focus on young children? Do you consider this line of intervention as the Foundation’s main mission? The Foundation is involved in promoting the virtues of supporting early childhood education and development globally through its partnership with the World Bank and Novak Djokovic’s role as the UNICEF Global Ambassador. We have chosen to address an issue that not many NGOs focus on, because it takes many years to see the tangible results.

Nevertheless, our upbringing keeps steadfast on our mission as we strongly believe that with the right care, support, and education, any child can become a winner regardless of the chosen discipline. And that’s why, even when instant gratification is not an option, we always insist on investing in Early Childhood Development (ECD). Our projects are currently focused mainly in Serbia, with some of the work being carried out internationally, such as in North America and Australia. For example, in 2016, the Foundation donated U$20,000 to the Centro Mater Child Care Center in Miami and the same amount was donated to the Melbourne City Mission for its work with some of Melbourne’s most disadvantaged children.

TALK Miami 13

NOVAK DJOKOVIC

Was disaster relief part of the initial idea behind the foundation? No, not really. The initial idea behind the creation of the Fund was just to help. Novak, after seeing and witnessing the sufferings of people in his own country, wanted to do something to alleviate their problems. With the help of his parents, he funded the Novak Fund in 2007. The Fund carried out various initiatives with this goal in mind, but Novak and his parents came to understanding that this kind of help was hard to measure and even harder to track. They realized that if they really wanted to make a lasting change, they needed a much stronger focus and a clear mission. And so in 2012, Novak and I – back then I was his girlfriend – restructured and re-branded Novak Fund into what we know today as the Novak Djokovic Foundation, which focus is on early childhood development. Could you tell us about the details on where and when the idea to start a foundation came from? A significant milestone that prompted the creation of the Foundation took place in 2012,

after our country faced the worrying statistics (provided by UNICEF) that showed that half of children in Serbia do not attend any preschool programs. Low pre-school participation rates such as these are very worrying for the future of any society because studies show that children who do not attend pre-school face higher chances of dropping out of school, living lives of poverty and crime and would have to be rehabilitated into society. This topic is very personal to us because, above everything else, we believe in prevention through investing in early years programs rather than later rehabilitation of these children. We were both very lucky that we grew up in families that nurtured education and understood the value of early childhood development. So, it was only natural that we’d do the same through the work of our Foundation. And to do that, we gathered a team of truly passionate people who believe that every child should have a chance to grow up in a nurturing and loving environment where they would be able to thrive and flourish.

TALK Miami 14

NOVAK DJOKOVIC

How many kids / people do you estimate were affected by the Foundation so far? After 12 years spent in serving our community, we can proudly announce that behind our work there are 43 kindergartens opened all over Serbia, more than 22,000 children touched by our programs, 1,575 professionally trained teachers and facilitators, several thousand parents, and tens of programs implemented by the Foundation. To further our mission, we are cooperating with the University Harvard’s Center on Developing Child, World Bank, the German Chamber of Commerce and hundreds of companies from our country and the world, which have recognized our efforts to improve the starting positions for children. Recently, prestigious magazine in Serbia ''Diplomacy and Commerce'' has awarded

Novak Djokovic with the award for the humanitarian of the year and the Foundation as the Foundation of the year, which is a significant confirmation that our work is well recognized. We would also like to mention that we have developed special programs with a mission to support parents in their most important role of their lives. Our Program ''Support, Not Perfection'' has been carried out during the last two and a half years, led by the professional psychologist and educational expert Mrs. Smiljana Grujic. So far more than 800 parents have participated in the workshops that are part of the program and have gained valuable skills to make their relationship with children and their role as parents much better – or as we like to say it, we empowered parents to give their children ''roots to grow and wings to fly''.

TALK Miami 15

NOVAK DJOKOVIC What are the biggest challenges in running a foundation? Is it difficult to find or keep the partners close and to keep gathering the donations / funds to make the projects happen? There are obviously many challenges in running any charity, but we are grateful to have had wonderful partners over the years who made our work really rewarding. Thanks to the great cooperation we nurtured with all of them over the years, we realized that it’s much less stress for all of us when we support each other in everything, since the biggest challenge for all of us are changing laws and regulations. Those complicate our work and sometimes make us have to start again but if there is understanding on all sides, there is really nothing that challenging that work will suffer. Since our Foundation only invests in sustainable programs, our partners are local authorities on whom we lean on for all necessary procedures, permits and building sites, and local preschool institutions, who are left in charge of running preschools on our behalf.

Have you ever suffered any kind of government/ institution intervention that made you have to take a step back and go through bureaucratic issues to make your final mission happen? Thankfully, we haven’t had any negative experiences so far. We are immensely grateful that we have many partners who live and share our vision, who believe in a world where every child has an equal chance to grow into a caring and productive member of society! When you have people believing in the same thing, it is greatly rewarding to do the work you do. We have a solid base of donors who support our work, not only through financial aid, but also through in-kind donations or services. Our work is a twoway street, that is why we strive to thank our benefactors for their support in the best possible way. We give our donors integrity, transparency, and they are always happy to know exactly where their money goes and what kind of support was provided to children.

TALK Miami 16

NOVAK DJOKOVIC

We’d love to hear anything interesting, innovative, or curious that people don’t usually associate with running a foundation. Our Foundation’s dream is to help transform the world into a place where every human has a chance to live their success story. To do that, we knew that investing only in school builds, teacher training and parent support would not be enough. To create meaningful programs and to really help children, teachers and caretakers alike, we needed to draw from some body of knowledge. Unfortunately, to this day, there is just not enough research done on the topic of early years and their importance. With that in mind, in 2015, we formed partnership with Harvard University’s Center on Developing Child, thus founding the Djokovic Science and Innovation Fellowship. Each year, four advanced doctoral students are hand selected by Prof. Dr Jack Shonkoff

and his team to carry out research related to early childhood health, learning, and behavior. We hope that the results of their research will help change perspectives of the world policy makers and early childhood development professionals and motivate them to create laws and policies that will work in favor of children. We have also formed partnership with the Faculty of Philosophy - Department of Pedagogy and Andragogy at the University of Belgrade, where we provide two full scholarships to the newly enrolled PhD students. This initiative is called Djokovic Scholars and is designed to build academic and research leaders in the field of early childhood education and development, who will be key actors in exploring, informing and advocating for quality preschool education policies and practices in Serbia.

CHOPARD’S MILLE MIGLIA WATCH By Alice Morais

T

he Swiss label Chopard, worldly famous for its luxurious pieces, is the official timekeeper of the Mille Miglia and this partnership has created an entire line of watches paying tribute to the legendary and romantic race that happened through the Italian countryside. Former LeMans driver, Jacky Ickx, was the responsible for the connections in the race world for Chopard to become an official partner of the Mille Miglia. He’s now an ambassador for the brand. Every year Chopard develops a special edition of the Mille Miglia watch that’s distributed to the drivers, members of a very limited and restrict club. But there’s another club that you can join: the Classic Car Club Manhattan. The Classic Car Club offers members the chance to drive a fleet of everything, from modern supercars to classic Broncos. They have launched a membership tier that allows car enthusiasts to hang out and get into driving-adjacent activities, like racing simulators. Also, they have recently partnered with Chopard to produce ten limited edition watches, and each one of thse pieces will give their owners a lifetime social membership to Classic Car Club Manhattan. TALK Miami 18

FASHION

The watch is delivered as a standard Mille Miglia GTS Automatic, but supplied with an extra dial designed by founding partner of the club Mike Prichinello, who hand painted the dial. There’s a larger story behind the aesthetic of the piece: Mr. Prichinello deconstructed the classic Mille Miglia insignia and identified all the sweeps, turns and curves that the letters create and applied those designs to the dials of the watches. That shows a great emphasis on automotive art. Although the Chopard’s Mille Miglia models made for events have a classic standard, the execution of this watch is completely different and rather unorthodox. The package is punk in the sense that it rallies against official sponsorship and adopts a raw aesthetic that’s more similar to graffiti than Métiers d’Art. Prichinello’s final product represents a refreshing counter-culture take on a watch that’s well established, refined and respected. A standard Mille Miglia GTS Automatic is priced at $5,790. The Classic Car Club edition costs around $10,000. The dial is an innovative part of

the package, but the real value is the fact that the Classic Car Club treats the watch like a member. And one must bear in mind that membership is transferable to whoever owns the watch. It has the potential to be a generational piece.

ROLLS-ROYCE CULLINAN: THE MOST ELEGANT SUV OF ALL By Alice Morais

S

UVs have overtaken sedans as a percentage of all new car sales in the USA. That’s a fact and it’s no surprise that luxury carmakers would react to that. People who are willing to spend great amounts of money on cars, now have options such as the Lamborghini Urus, Bentley Bentayga and Range Rover SV Coupe. So why not a Rolls-Royce SUV? TALK Miami 50

LIFESTYLE

That’s Rolls-Royce Cullinan, an exercise in combining the latest automotive tech with old-school style. The car, named after a diamond – the largest one ever discovered and that’s now embedded in the Queen of England’s Imperial State Crown – sports a

6.75-liter twin-turbo V12 engine capable of churning out 517hp (421kW) at 5,000 rpm and 627lb-ft (850Nm) of torque at 1,600rpm. To give the Cullinan the quiet ride that one expects from a Rolls-Royce, it has a doublewishbone suspension and all-wheel drive.

TALK Miami 51

LIFESTYLE

Although it’s an unusual form factor, there’s no doubt that you’re looking at a Rolls-Royce. The Spirit of Ecstasy takes her place of honor at the front of the hood above the front grille. The Cullinan has the familiar square, even a little boxy, lines of a typical Rolls. While sitting behind the wheel surrounded by stitched leather and a large wood dash, you’ll pleasantly make your way to your destination. The infotainment system goes allin on that feeling of upper-class décor and the Cullinan also ships with the requisite driver’s assist features. The knobs and switches on the dash are waiting to be flipped and turned with TALK Miami 52

the carmaker opting for a more refined labeling system than pretty much every other car on the road. And then we have the real moment when you realize you’re riding the peak of automotive luxury: the backseat. It’s comfortable, classy and beautiful, but also, it’s super-nerdy: imagine the backseat of a car that has a small desk table and tablet that emerge with the push of a button. With it, you can control the infotainment system and navigation. That sounds really comfortable. While the inside is an impressive combination of leather, shiny metal and wood that resembles a traditional British library, the exterior is more low-spirited. The giant wheels, bonnet and front of the car are pure Rolls, but overall it seems like the SUV needs something to truly convey the same styling of the brand’s other vehicles. Summing up, the Cullinan is great mix of old-country class combined with latest car technology. And that’s exactly what a Rolls-Royce buyer wants.

HONDA’S NEW PRIVATE JET By Alice Morais

T

he Honda HA-420 HondaJet is one of the most capable small private jets in the world. The original HondaJet, produced in 2015, was the Japanese brand’s incursion into the world of aviation as a manufacturer. It was also the result of 30 years’ worth of research and development work led by Michimasa Fujino, Honda Aircraft Company CEO. Last year, Honda introduced an updated version of the aircraft, called the HondaJet Elite, to match the designation given to the company’s luxury automobiles. The model was initially sold alongside the original HondaJet, but now it is the only version of the plane in production.

TALK Miami 64

LIFESTYLE

Updates include an extra fuel tank that boosts range to more than 1,650 miles; a quieter cabin and an available galley. The cabin is made of a carbon-fiberepoxy composite designed to be lighter and stronger than traditional aluminum construction. Fujino said that the nose design was inspired by a pair of Ferragamo high heels he once spotted at a duty-free

shop while travelling on vacation. The jet was developed to be operated by only one pilot, opening it up to the market for owner-operators or people who fly personal private jets. It brings an updated version of the Garmin G3000 avionics suite from the original model. The cockpit features three 14.1-inch high-definition displays along with a pair of 5.7-inch touchscreens.

TALK Miami 65

LIFESTYLE

The new HondaJet is powered by a pair of GE Honda HF120 turbofan engines that produce 2,050 pounds of thrust, each. It is the only jet produced with this kind of engine in the world. The engines are mounted on over-wing pylons, unlike most of the private jets. According to the producer, the design contributes to a quieter cabin. The main cabin seats four passengers in a club setup on a floating ball-joint system which allows the seats to move forward,

backward and sideways. The cabin’s tech can be controlled using your smartphone or a built-in touchpad. The cabin is surrounded by a couple dozen transducers that vibrate in the plane’s interior walls, giving passengers a smooth feeling. The HondaJet Elite also has a lot of storage: a total 66 cubic feet of cargo space divided into a 57-cubic-foot trunk behind the passenger cabin and a 9-cubic-foot trunk in the nose.

MALIN + GOETZ REVITALIZING EYE CREAM MALIN + GOETZ is well-known for its home and bath products, like candles and body washes, but the brand also makes this popular eye cream, which contains amino-acid peptides to reduce fine lines around the delicate eye area.

KITH X ESTÉE LAUDER ADVANCED NIGHT REPAIR Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair serum is one of the brand’s most hyped products and now it has the KITH label of approval. Use it before going to bed to wake up with a revigorated and brighter skin.

SIX OF THE MOST

EXPENSIVE RESTAURANTS

IN THE WORLD By Alice Morais

here to go if you’re planning to give yourself a treat? Here’s a list with six of the most expensive restaurants around the world.

TALK Miami 78

RESTAURANTS

RESTAURANT DE I’HÔTEL DE VILLE Location: Crissier, Switzerland Average price: U$532 The most effortless menu option brings eleven courses for 390 CHF (U$532) and that price only goes up when you include a bottle from the restaurant’s 40-page wine list. Late chef Benoít and his wife Brigitte Violier were the first to earn the desired three Michelin stars for the restaurant, but chef Franck Giovannini, who is now in charge of the kitchen, has managed to keep the high level with Celtic sea scallops and Alpine goat on the menu.

GUY SAVOY Location: Paris, France Average price: U$626 Opened on the banks of the Seine in 2015, here you can have a feast for U$626. This option includes a whole-roasted barbecued pigeon, oyster concassé and monkfish among aubergine caviar with sautéed ceps.

TALK Miami 79

RESTAURANTS

MASA Location: New York, USA Average price: U$595 With a tasting menu that costs U$595 per person – not including beverages and tax – Masa is known as America’s most expensive restaurant. Reservations for the 26-seater restaurant are made three weeks in advance and it is said that chef Masa Takayama prepares the menu himself, featuring fresh fish and Kobe beef right from Japan.

ALAIN DUCASSE AU PLAZA ATHÉNÉE Location: Paris, France Average price: U$603 The French chef renovated his restaurant at the Hôtel Plaza Athénée in 2014 and the glamour is enough to recommend Alain Ducasse’s boldest Paris undertaking. The dining room ceiling drips with 10,000 crystals and cutlery created in the 1970’s is reedited for the restaurant. A menu of three half dishes, cheese and dessert will cost around U$600. Drinks are not included.

RESTAURANTS

KITCHO ARASHIYAMA HONTEN Location: Kyoto, Japan Average price: U$646 Opened on the banks of the Seine in 2015, here you can have a feast for U$626. This option includes a wholeroasted barbecued pigeon, oyster concassé and monkfish among aubergine caviar with sautéed ceps.

SUBLIMOTION Location: Ibiza, Spain Average price: U$2380 Yes, you read that right. The 12-seat restaurant at the Hard Rock Hotel charges U$2380 per person for its 20-course dinner. Open only during the island’s summer season, Sublimotion offer diners an immersive, culinary-entertainment experience, which includes virtual reality elements, laser light shows and projection mapping in a room. The menu includes edible entrance tickets, a variety of seafood cooked in a shell and a DIY salad that guests picks from vegetables that seem to be growing out of the dining table.

GET READY FOR CANNES 2019 By Alice Morais

E

very year, the Cannes Film Festival hosts the best gathering of movie lovers in the world. After 71 editions, the Festival still has that cool and glamorous vibe that attracts everybody and even with many changes over the decades, Cannes remains one of the few A-list festivals to offer red carpet premieres for a range of international cinema. This year, the festival starts on May 14 and goes until May 25. And we must say: the Official Competition is just part of the story. A few major directors

will compete for the Palme d´Or but many other titles will end up generating buzz through the Official Selection, Director’s Fortnight and Critics’ Week. The Cannes signature is always a great reason to explore some of the potential films that can make a lot of noise in the months ahead and cause a sensation. And in that regard, 2019 has a lot of potential. As the Cannes Film Festival will announce its lineup in mid-April, we’ve prepared our wish list with films we bet will make some noise.

CULTURE

ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD Director: Quentin Tarantino Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie Tarantino has been part of the Cannes club since he won the Palme d’Or for Pulp Fiction and this year he’s returning to the festival with a very expected work. For all his background at Cannes, we can assume there’s surprise that his latest stylish look back at a major cultural moment will score a high-profile premiere in the Palais des Festivals. DiCaprio stars as a struggling actor who hangs his stuntman played by Brad Pitt; as if that star power alone weren’t enough to make the film worthy of anticipation, the cast also includes Al Pacino as a Hollywood agent and Robbie as Sharon Tate. Sources say that Tarantino is insisting on launching the film during the second half of the festival, confident that it will bring more energy to the competition and create even more buzz. We can’t hardly wait!

MATTHIAS & MAXIME Director: Xavier Dolan Cast: Xavier Dolan, Harris Dickinson, Anne Dorval, Micheline Bernard and Samuel Gauthier The Canadian director took a break from the madness of Cannes for his last film – The Life and Death of John F. Donovan – but he just might be ready to return to the festival that has always embraced him and his bold works. Details on his newest film are reduced, but what has been released hints at Dolan going a touch more small-scale and focused on a group of Canadian friends. TALK Miami 83

CULTURE

RADEGUND Director: Terrence Malick | Cast: Matthias Schoenaerts, Bruno Ganz, August Diehl We all know that Terrence Malick likes to take his time on projects – remember that twenty-year long stretch between Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line? – but in recent years his production has reached a fever pitch. Radegund was announced in 2017 and it’s a World War II drama based on the life of Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian objector who refused to fight for the Nazis. The filmmaker has promised a more structured narrative than his last features, including Tree of Life and Knight of Cups. We hope Malick doesn’t change his mind and decides to take another break from Cannes.

ROCKETMAN Director: Dexter Fletcher | Cast: Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Richard Madden Dexter Fletcher’s name could be seen in the credits of smash hit Bohemian Rhapsody as an executive producer, even though everyone knows he stepped in to save the production as co-director when credited director Bryan Singer left the project. But let’s consider Rocketman as his real reward. An original musical about the life and work of Elton John (Taron Egerton), early looks at the biopic don’t shy away from the more creative, crazy and even magical elements of the story. Sequences that have been shown to member of the press indicate that the work has that kind of freedom lacked in Bohemian Rhapsody, for example. The director is still wrapping up the film, which has a late May release date. Let’s see if that final push is in hopes of getting it done in time for an out of competition slot.

THE DEAD DON’T DIE Director: Jim Jarmusch | Cast: Chloe Sevigny, Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray Jarmusch has been one of the most creative American filmmakers of the past 30 years, who uses his distinctive brand of storytelling and funky attitude to a range of characters both real and imagined. The story of Dead Don’t Die suggests an expansion of the supernatural backdrop that made his comedy Only Lovers Left Alive such an appealing twist on a familiar trope. The zombie movie has been done so many times that it feels like old news, but Jarmusch is such a singular director that this one sounds like a film we will rush to watch. TALK Miami 84

CULTURE

SORRY WE MISSED YOU Director: Ken Loach Cast: Kris Hitchen, Debbie Honeywood, Rhys Stone Legendary British director, Loach has premiered 13 films in Competition over the course of his long career. But, to the surprise and consternation of many critics, has managed to win only two Palmes d’Or (for The Wind that Shakes the Barley and I, Daniel Blake – both films that typify his signature form of working-class frustration). Shot in Newcastle, Sorry We Missed You is certain to bring Loach back to the festival at a time when audiences from around the world seem to be receptive to stories about financial struggles. Kris Hitchen stars as Ricky, a man whose family has been in trouble since the 2008 recession. Ricky’s fate seems to change when he comes into possession of a brand-new van and starts working as a delivery driver, but things with his wife start to fray when their work pulls them in separate directions. Will Loach be the first person to ever win a third Palme d’Or?

GUEST OF HONOUR Director: Atom Egoyan Cast: David Thewlis, Luke Wilson, Rossif Sutherland, Tennille Read Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan appears to be going back to basics for his newest drama. In other words, that means ‘complicated families, twisted memories, messy power dynamics and big secrets. The film centers on Jim (David Thewlis) and his daughter Veronica (Laysla De Oliveira), who has been imprisoned due to the schemes of a local bus driver, though she refuses any help for an early release, bent on paying for other crimes she committed earlier in her life. The impact of Veronica’s secrets is deep and soon captures Jim and people around him. TALK Miami 85

MEN STYLE WHAT’S NEW?

FASHION HIGHLIGHTS FROM LONDON, PARIS AND MILAN FASHION WEEKS By Alice Morais

F

rom avant-garde to ready-to-wear, London’s menswear scene proved to be a nest of homegrown talent. After the last shows, it’s clear that the British capital is currently fashion’s place to be. The men’s schedule delivered some names to which we must keep an eye on. Houssein Chalayan stands out amongst the surprises. Usually labelled as conceptual creator, Chalayan has been downgraded to the niche of cultivated fashion and art lovers. That’s not bad but it may become a problem considering that

it’s a rather small niche. An exceptional designer with strong talent and strong narrative skills, Chalayan definitely deserves more attention. His FW19 collection is emblematic of how streetwear should be approached. By taking the best of two worlds (the hoodie one and the sartorial one) the designer offers the balance men’s fashion needs. His work interpretation of the trend clearly shows his signature – a fine blend of creativity and extremely wearable pieces that balances sport items, button-down shirts and a very interesting color palette.

FASHION

London Chalayan

Milan Dolce & Gabbana

While London had a few surprises, the same can’t be said about Milan. The Fashion Week was not bad, just a little predictable. As usual, Prada and Pal Zileri are spot on, N.21 is as cool as ever, MSGM keeps the market happy and Armani was missed for sure. If we have to talk about one specific brand that stood out, that one must be Dolce & Gabbana. The Italian label’s show was an ode to tailoring, elegance and luxury. An incredible display of velvet jacquards and brocade which paid tribute to the Sicilian aristocracy, while colored sequins pointed at future plans and the suiting honored the Italian sartorial tradition. By adopting the oldschool show format, setting an atelier in the background and bringing awesome pieces, Dolce & Gabbana prove that the Italians just

Paris Acne Studios

have style in their blood and if there’s one thing Italy can teach the world, that thing is elegance. Paris has brought the usual glamour and buzz. Valentino is always Valentino, Undercover has probably delivered its best collection ever. But what we found really interesting is Acne Studios. The Swedish brand has always managed to mix tailoring and casual cool, but this season the concept behind the collection was even more interesting. Jonny Johasson, creative director of the maison, said “I wanted to imagine our own counter-cultures which then morph together, with their own ways of living and surviving”. The result is a great gathering of academics, anarchists, bohemians and pioneers, focusing on identity with a style that manages to be both practical and romantic.

HUAWEI UNVEILS NEW P30 PRO SMARTPHONE AND INCREASES WORRIES FOR APPLE IN CHINA By Alice Morais

T

he Chinese company Huawei has unveiled – on an event page for the phone – pretty much everything you wanted to know ahead of its official release. As expected, the P30 Pro will have a quad camera array – with the main packing a 40-megapixel sensor – and 10X hybrid zoom doubling the P20 Pro’s 5X zoom. The device will have improved low-light capability, making it better for night shooting. It will also bring a dual-view video mode. That will show two of the four cameras at the same time in split-screen, letting the users see both a close-up and wide-angle view. However, it’s not clear if you can record in the split format as well. TALK Miami 100

TECHNOLOGY The event page also revealed the Huawei Watch GT Active edition, which will be offered for free to P30 Pro buyers at Huawei’s Singapore event. The new Huawei P30 Pro may increase the troubles Apple is having to beat the Chinese market. To make a long story short, Apple’s latest iPhones aren’t appealing to Chinese consumers. The high prices of iPhone XS ($999) and iPhone XS Max ($1,099) make it a hard buy for shoppers, especially when Chinese companies like Huawei (and also ZTE, Xiaomi) can sell equally highqualified devices for hundreds of dollars less. Apple’s unique design aesthetic is one of the main reasons the iPhone is such a popular device, but that same success also made the American company a target for copycats. For years, China’s biggest phone makers have been selling products that look suspiciously like the iPhone. But things have changed and Huawei, Oppo and Xiaomi – which own 24.6%, 20.5% and 13.6% of the Chinese market started to offer innovative features of their own. A good example is Huawei’s P20 Pro, which reviewers worldwide have scored as good as iPhone X and Samsung’s Galaxy S9. We wonder what will happen with the arrival of the new P30 Pro.

TALK Miami 101

TECHNOLOGY

None of these competing smartphones runs Apple’s iOS operating system. Instead, they operate a version of the Google’s Android. In the past, iOS would be a selling point on its own, but since Android has reached parity with iOS, there’s no more reason to opt for Apple’s system with the hopes of getting better features. In fact, many manufacturers customize Android in a way that appeals more to the Chinese market. If Apple plans to manage a comeback in China, the company will need to offer more low-cost products. According to CLSA analysts Cherry Ma and Nicolas Baratte, Apple’s best-selling iPhone in last November was the $749 iPhone XR and the company saw, year-over-year, unit sales fall 27.5% in

November and 22.8% month-over-month. Huawei, on the other hand, saw a 33.8% yearover-year increase. The company’s Honor 8X was also its best-selling device in November, followed by the high-end Mate 20, P20 and Honor 8X Max. The Chinese market has always been difficult for Apple to break into, and it seems that things won’t be easy for the company in a near future. At this point, all smartphones are relatively equal across the world in terms of performance and features. Apple needs to produce a truly innovative and breakout device that reinvigorates the brand and reminds consumers why it was once valued $1 trillion. Until then, Apple’s trouble in China will simply continue.
