THE NEW FREDERIC MALLE GROOMING COLLECTION BRINGS AN EXCLUSIVE FRAGRANCE By Alice Morais
F
or his new grooming collection, Frederic Malle wanted a fragrance that was close to his memories. Keeping that in mind, Dominique Ropion designed Vetiver Extraordinaire, a fragrance with top notes of bergamot and bitter orange; a heart of pink pepper, cloves and vetiver; and finally, a base of sandalwood, cedar myrhh and musk. The collection consists of Shave Cream and After Shave Balm. TALK Miami 6
BEAUTY
The Shave Cream In a minimalist and elegant white aluminium tube, it is definitely a cream: there’s no foaming base to this which many shave creams can sneak in. It spreads well across the skin and stays very fixed even under running water, allowing you to shave with comfort. After rinsed off, it doesn’t leave your skin slimy or dry but freshly cleansed and smooth from shaving, with a very discreet scent of the Vetiver Extraordinaire. A great product, even for sensitive skins.
The After Shave Balm If you prefer an electric to a wet shave, then this balm is for you. Electric shaves can often leave your skin a little toasty, so this water-based product with a healthy amount of menthol not only soothes but cools your skin down. Compared to the shaving cream, the After Shave Balm has a slightly higher concentration of Vetiver Extraordinaire, but it’s still very soft. It’s definitely the ultimate in male scent-layering. The formula is clearly well balanced and tested. The great amount of glycerin is perfect to keep your skin superhydrated, which can be a little problem if you have some of these skin issues: acne, rosacea, etc. TALK Miami 7

PHANTOM 2018 THE NEW ROLLS-ROYCE MACHINE By Alice Morais
N
ew versions of the Rolls-Royce Phantom don’t appear very often, so the fuss is completely acceptable and understandable. The original Phantom was introduced in 1925, and Rolls-Royce claims that makes it the longest-lives model name in automotive history. Actually, there are some gaps between generations, but this new 8th generation is directly replacing the current car, which was the first BMW-developed Rolls-Royce.
TALK Miami 8
LIFESTYLE
The new Phantom sits on Rolls-Royce’s new aluminum spaceframe platform, the Architecture of Luxury, which will cover all of the company’s forthcoming models, including the Project Cullinan SUV. The 140-inch wheelbase is slightly smaller than the previous car’s, and the overall length of 227.2 inches actually has shrunk by 2.8 inches for the standard-wheelbase version. Suspension elements are mostly aluminum, with electrically controlled air springs, active anti-roll bars and adaptive dampers delivering what RollsRoyce describes as its Magic Carpet Ride. It uses
a road-scanning camera system to prepare for bumps before they reach the wheels. The external style has changed gently: the new car is less slab-sided than its predecessor and has what we can call a waft line running along the base of the doors. The stainless-steel grille is taller now, while the overall proportions remain the same (including enormous C-pillars and rear-hinged rear coach doors). The standard wheels will be 21 inches in diameter. Details include headlamps with frosted-glass internal elements and laser main beams that are claimed

to have a range of 650 yards. The new Phantom is being considered the quietest car in the world, due to new equipment developed by the company which includes the new Silent Seal tires – a layer of foam inside the tires that reduces overall tire noise by nine decibels. The new Phantom’s statistics are breathtaking. Power comes from a new twinturbocharged V-12 that has been derived from the 6.6-liter unit fitted to the more popular Wraith, Ghost and Dawn displaces, according to the company’s history. While the peak output of 563 horsepower is the same as its siblings, torque output rises substantially – to 664 lb-ft, available from 1700 rpm. That means the Phantom is more powerful than its predecessor. Torque is directed exclusively to the rear via an eightspeed ZF automatic transmission that is connected electronically to a geolocation system to help it choose appropriate gears. Top speed is 155 mph but the car is capable

LIFESTYLE of much more. A prototype has reached 186 mph during tests in Italy. Rolls-Royce vehicles have always been designed from the back seat forward, and even though we’re told that the new Phantom has been designed to offer a sharper dynamic experience, most owners are likely to experience it from the rear rather than the front. The cabin retains many traditional touches, including rotary controls for the heating and ventilation system. The most interesting feature is a toughened glass panel spanning the top of the dashboard and instrument panel. The rear portion of the cabin is more conventional. There are still folding wooden picnic tables, although they are now power operated, and 12.0-inch display screens for rear passengers are integrated into the rears of the front seats. Every nonglazed surface is basically covered in leather, wood or ankle-deep carpeting. As usual, the range of customizations is huge, it all depends on the buyer’s taste. Prices haven’t been confirmed yet.

amila Wisniewski is a Brazilian top model born in the South of that country, 26 years ago. She started her modeling career at 16 and since then has travelled the world showing her beauty and working hard. Camila, who works in partnership with MP MEGA Miami, MP Mega Paris e JOY MODELS in Brazil, has been living in Miami for the past two years and is a huge fan of the city. At the moment, the model is traveling a lot due to her new project: a jewelry brand named WIS that’s releasing its first collection.
What has been the biggest challenge in your career so far? The distance, for sure… the distance from my family, my friends. I was very young (when I left home) and my life changed completely, but I like challenges and I think they contribute a lot in what we become. Some of them seem very hard to handle, but I believe that all of them bring us a big lesson and that’s part of our growing process as human beings. Besides that, the feeling of overcoming a challenge is amazing.

How would you describe your style? I love that elegant, classy style… I think this is how I try to be and it’s what I admire in other people. I am working on a new jewelry collection right now and I will try to put the best style in it. I want people to feel beautiful and confident with my jewelry. What’s your biggest dream? I’ve had many dreams that became true and I’m trying to make the other ones possible, but the most important in life is being happy no matter where or how.
What would you do if you had just one more day on Earth? A big party in a beautiful place to celebrate life! With all the people I love, all my dear ones, my family and friends. The most important things in life are... Love. Everything is love. The relationships, the motivation to become a better person each day, choosing a profession, everything is about love. A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME By Alice Morais
L
imited edition watches designed especially for the Middle East have been a favorite of watchmakers in recent years, due to the growing demand for fine watches in that region. Of all the editions made for the Middle East, the most popular watches are the ones with Eastern Arabic numerals for the hours, usually labelled as “Arabic dials”. Arabic numerals are symbols descended from the Hindu-Arabic numeral system, invented more than 1600 years ago by Indian mathematicians. Over the time, they were adopted by the Arabs and evolved into the Arabic numerals (1,2,3…)
that are commonly used today. However, these numerals are still widely used with the Arabic alphabet in the east of the Arab world, namely the wealthy, oil producers of the Arabian Gulf. Watchmaker Hublot started the Arabic number revival in 2013 with a beautiful titanium Classic Fusion with a grey dial and rose gold-plated Arabic numerals. The series was limited to 100 pieces and were sold faster than expected. Hublot’s success encouraged watch brands to come up with their own interpretation of Arabic dials. But such dials are not actually a new trend. One of the notable pioneers was Rolex, which offered

special dials with Arabic numeral back in the late 1950s on Day-Date watches. “Rolex’s willingness to tailor its watches to the specific needs and tastes of its clients in order to increase sales to an emerging luxury market” was the reason behind Arabic dials, explains Eric Ku, a Rolex specialist.
As with all things that involve Rolex, it is hard to say exactly when Arabic dials first came to market. It is industry wisdom that such dials were first fitted to Day-Dates from the 50s, with several models known to exist. These special watches are likely the first time that an entirely Arabic number dial
TALK Miami 27
FASHION with a matching Arabic script calendar function was ever produced, not jus only Rolex, but by the entire Swiss watch industry. Watches with Arabic dials became popular resulting in their production for the next 20 years, during which Rolex experimented with the designs and so dis its customers. The result was many different combinations of dial colors and varying metals for the case and bracelet. Some dial patterns are unique. One example of Rolex Day-Date was a ref. 1803 in pink gold fitted with a dial nicknamed “Aladdin’s Rose”. It was made in 1974 and sold in Damascus, Syria. But while all that aesthetic evolution was happening over more than two decades, two factors remained unchanged: the font of the Arabic hour numerals consistently remained the same size and style, and so did the typography for the day and date. By the end of the 70s, the Arabic dial was discontinued, leaving only the Arabic day and date wheels as an optional feature available on request. A unique genre of vintage Rolex Day-Dates are those with Arabic text or logos on the dial that commemorate events or people.

A CLASSIC COMES BACK TO LIFE
ast forward to Baselworld 2016: photos of a brand new Day-Date 40 emerges at the world’s largest watch trade fair, paying tribute to the golden era of the Arabic Dial. The model is a platinum Day-Date with a dial entirely in Arabic script. It is amazing that only after all this time Rolex finally have decided to resurrect what was a very desirable watch. Like other platinum Rolex watches, the Arabic Day-Date has an “Ice Blue” dial, a pale tone of blue that is beautifully finished with a sun-ray brushing. The new model is not just a casual tribute to the past: if you compare the numerals on the vintage and modern Arabic Day-Date, you will realize that the font and alignment are exactly the same. It’s definitely a beautiful homage piece, true to the original purpose of catering to the Arab market while still keeps it rare by making only limited numbers and keeping it to the most precious materials. It was a great move from Rolex: introducing the Arabic dial on a top of the line model, in the priciest material, and having it produced in limited quantities. Distribution is extremely
limited, once the watch will only be available at select authorized dealers in the Middle East. The special edition Day-Date 40 is priced at US$63,200. Rumors have it that there is another model in platinum that costs almost twice as much thanks to a baguette diamond bezel. That is a combination perfectly fits the glorious history of the Arabic Day-Date.

5 GREAT RESTAURANTS IN UNEXPECTED PLACES By Alice Morais
T
here’s a new trend hitting America: great food in odd – or just plain cool – settings. Forget fancy restaurants. The big deal here is to visit that place that, most of the times, doesn’t even look like a restaurant. The problem is, these places can be a little hard to find, so we have selected for you. Enjoy!
North Branch Inn, New York You may be a little tired of Brooklyn… until you visit North Branch Inn. When you step into the hotel’s tiny cinema with seats from Radio City Music Hall, you’ll never want to leave that. Dinner is served off the lobby next to a tiny bowling alley. The pins are so old they have to be set manually. You will certainly have fun spending a couple of hours eating farmer-style food and bowling.
Melba’s, New Orleans It’s hard to say whether Melba’s is a restaurant inside a laundry or a laundry inside a restaurant. What is clear is that Melba’s hit the scene a few years ago with a menu with superlative versions of neighborhood classics: seafood po’boys, boiled crawfish, bell peppers stuffed with meat and shrimp and the famous Gumbo filled with smoked sausage and spice.

Taco Bambo, Washington, D.C. Hidden at a strip mall, there’s a tiny Mexican restaurant owned by the son of the woman who runs a market next door. That son turns out to be Victor Albisu, famous chef of Latin restaurant Del Campo. Taco Bambo serves the best crispy tongue and tripe or spiced braised goat you will ever taste.
Trois Mec, Los Angeles Located in a storefront wedged beside a dry cleaner and a doughnut shop, Trois Mec is led by Ludo Lefebvre, Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo, a.k.a “the three guys”. The finedining-in-a-strip-mall thing isn’t the only trend they pioneered. The went democratic by lowering prices and not taking reservations at Petit Trois; and brought their flavors to the masses with Mexican influenced fast casual at Trois Familia.
Dai Due, Austin, Texas One half of Dai Due is a butcher shop and the other half, in the back, is a restaurant that Texas food critics are calling the best in Austin. Jesse Griffiths and Tamara Mayfield, owners of the place, source almost all ingredients from Texas. Beer-braised collard greens, venison hot dogs with kimchi are among the most popular choices. On weekends, Dai Due offers shareable family-style dishes of seafood or fried chicken. TALK Miami 31

uilt in 2012, Vicky arrived onto the charter scene four years later, holding a position as one of the most in-demand superyachts. Dedicated to the comfort of guests, it’s not hard to understand Vicky’s popularity. Vicky was the largest Turkish branded-yacht by the time of its launch and certainly the most distinctive one. Full of surprises, customization is the key to make it unique among Turquoise items, as well as across the whole charter fleet. Much of Vicky’s personality is the outcome of the incredible work of London-based H2 Yacht Design, as seen on the unusual layout which features a double height atrium, a master suite on the bridge deck, five guest cabins forward on the main deck and a lower deck spa.

lending elegant curves and graphic lines, the yacht white profile also sports some defining features, which ensures Vicky’s place among the world’s best yachts. It also includes a helipad on the tip of its sleek bow and balconies amidships on the upper deck. Elegant, timeless and inviting, Vicky radiates luxury across the guest living areas, through a combination of traditional joinery and modern furniture, an elegant color palette and a lack of excessive ornamentation. One of Vicky’s most remarkable features is the lower deck spa, which takes a holistic approach to the health and wellbeing of guests. Among the facilities, there is a steam room, spa pool and treatment room. Besides that, a central yoga area and gym equipment. Guests can not only retreat to indulge in spa therapies, but also enjoy a chill-out area by day and night. Perfect to receive guests and serve cocktails is the aft deck, equipped with a large sofa and coffee tables. Vicky’s sundeck is one of the largest in its size range, allowing guests to enjoy several

After a refreshing day, guests can enjoy the deck that converts into a nightclub, perfect for an event charter. H2 Yacht Design worked alongside Turquoise Yachts to create a multifunctional superyacht, which priorities the comfort of guests and has that amazing “wow factor. Vicky certainly serves many purposes and has the capability to impress without being overly lavish and ostentatious. It has a composed balance across its interior and exterior, which captivates guests with extraordinary comfort, luxury and unique style.

THE NEXT BIG THING IN SOUND SYSTEMS By Alice Morais

t’s no surprise that technology needs to be as multifunctional and versatile as possible if a product really wants to stand out from the crowd today. That is totally applicable for this Kickstarter project called Belle Portable Speaker & Bluetooth Hub. Technologically superior and functional, it boasts nextgeneration sound and connectivity. The Belle Portable Speaker & Bluetooth Hub is capable of syncing up to six Bluetooth speakers to deliver a wireless surround sound system anywhere you go. This incredible speaker has an understated, furtive aesthetic which makes it perfect to suit any place you can think of, whether it is your home, office or on a hike outdoors. TALK Miami 58
TECHNOLOGY
Any speaker system must deliver a first-class sound performance in order to provide users with the best experience the might have. In this area, the Belle Portable Speaker & Bluetooth Hub outstands all expectations. It creates rich, clear sound around the house but also has enough power to get the party started. It’s possible to mix and match Bluetooth speakers of any brands and that provides a versatile wireless setup. There’s nothing like that available on the market right now.
The Belle Portable Speaker & Bluetooth Hub uses two full-range drivers to deliver 100 watts of clear sound. Just by pushing a button, Belle has the unique ability to enter SUB mode and turn into the first truly portable Bluetooth subwoofer. Some of Belle’s highlights include a spherical design for full, 360° sound, an easy carry handle made from impact-resistant fiberglass, a touch control panel and a battery that lasts up to 8 hours. For music lovers looking for a versatile speaker that doesn’t inhibit your listening choices, the Belle Portable Speaker & Bluetooth Hub will surely be the number one option. TALK Miami 59
