INTERVIEW
HELOISA MAIA by Beto Biscaia
I
moved back to New York in 2007 to set up the Brazilian design company Osklen. And I have been living between New York and Miami ever since. But my relationship with the US goes back far behind in the late 80’s when I first lived in California and started painting and drawing. From that time on I knew that whatever I was going to do in my life it would always involve art. And so it has been like that. From San Francisco Art Academy to studio classes at Students Art League in NY, to painting workshops at Freie Kuntschulle in Berlin, art shows in galleries in the northeast and the south of Brazil, and participations in several design and architectural exhibitions, I
have been constantly showing my work. Some years more frequently than others but always developing some creative project. In the last few years as the company grew I had to spend more time developing new strategies for Osklen, therefore having less time to paint , which is always a challenge . But working in an extremely creative company it only pushes you harder to develop new ideas. And consequently new art. In all sorts of forms. From the office to the studio. It has been a great ride and I am always ready to take on new projects. As the 3 weeks artist residence program in Provence from where I just came back after opening an exhibition on july 7th.
TALK Miami 12
INTERVIEW
How do you divide your life between Osklen and your art? Is it hard? I wouldn’t say exactly that it is hard. It does have some challenges in organizing my time. Sometimes the entrepreneurial part of my life needs more time to develop the projects, and then it happens the other way around. The artist takes over. Like last month when I was painting in Provence. It is a matter of balance really. And the fact that I work for a very creative company makes it a lot easier. Oskar Metsavaht, Osklen’s Creative director is an artist also, and so is his sister Ana Amelia, who was Osklen Artistic Director for many years. So, art runs in the company! And how about Miami? And New York? My main residence is still New York. But I feel like I have been coming to Miami forever. Since I was a teenager, a young adult, then with my daughters, on frequent vacations and since 2010 because of work. I come to Miami every month. In the beginning , when I first moved back to the US, and set up the company, I kept my studio in NY. Both my daughters live there, Jessica works in Fashion for Saks 5th Avenue and Muriel with movie production at Blue Sky Studios. But Miami has grown into my life and into my art. I finally bought an apartment in Miami Beach last year and moved my studio here. It is impossible not to feel inspired here ! The sun, the sea, the entire atmosphere of the city is a constant inspiration for my art. New Projects? I am always looking for new projects. We have a beautiful Osklen store here in Miami, and I am very happy with the results the we are getting from it. We have another store in NY and recently moved to a new office where we are starting a wholesale operation. So the company is growing steadily . And for my art, now that I have the studio in Miami, I am producing more and more. I just came back from France where I am exhibiting this summer and I am currently studying some other opportunities to show my work here. I also recently launched my web site heloisamaia.com. It was designed by my daughter Muriel who is a movie producer in NY. Do you work with any gallery in Miami? Right now I only work with Bolsa de Arte Gallery that has a branch in Porto Alegre and Sao Paulo, that represents me in Brazil and La Galerie, in Vaison La Romaine, France who represents me there. I have worked on and off with some art spaces in New York . But since I set up the studio here and I am developing some new projects in painting and drawing I feel that is a good time to start looking for a Gallery in Miami . Favorites spots in Miami: 1- The beach in front of my apartment. Collins and 60’s 2- The Standard Hotel for drinks, pool, spa, acupuncture..... 3- The 1111 building, the coolest garage on the planet! 4- The art scene in Miami from the Rubell’s and Margulies Collection, Windwood Walls, the art galleries at Little Haiti to Perez Museum.... It is all super exciting! 5- My favorite restaurant: Juvia!

YSL CELEBRATES PARIS WITH A NEW FRAGRANCE DESPITE OF THE TRAGIC EVENTS THAT RECENTLY HAPPENED IN PARIS, THE CITY OF LIGHTS WILL ALWAYS REPRESENT A DREAM AND A LIFESTYLE. SO IT WAS FOR YES SAINT LAURENT. THE GREAT DESIGNER HAD ALWAYS STATED HOW PARIS SYMBOLIZED TRUTH, PASSION AND EMOTIONS RELATED TO FREEDOM. THE CITY WAS A CONSTANT SOURCE OF INSPIRATION AND LOVE FOR HIS WORK AND HIS LIFE. By Alice Morais

t is in this spirit of celebration that the new fragrance, Mon Paris by Yves Saint Laurent, is launched. An electrifying and remarkable perfume that wishes to represent the free and modern women who live through sensations and emotions. The woman who wears the new fragrance is spontaneous, intense and free from constraints, just like Paris, the city of lovers. on Paris is a perfume for both daytime and night and has a floral, fruity, exciting and charming openness. The fruity notes are strawberry, raspberry, pear and Calabrian bergamot. The floral one are Datura, peony, orange blossom and Chinese jasmine. The base notes are Indonesian patchouli leaf, white musk, ambrox and patchouli.

eveloped by three celebrated perfumiers, Olivier Cresp, Harry Fremont and Dora Baghriche-Arnaud, Mon Paris YSL is the perfume of an unconventional, crazy and impulsive love story, which leads to the break of all conventions. Mon Paris is also a rebellious reinvention of the traditional chypre. he conventional chypre is classical with a beautiful but strict structure. Mon Paris literally turns this notion upside down, creating a new balance by introducing a bold white chypre suited for modern life and modern love. The creators broke the mold from the conventional structure, working together to develop a completely new chypre experience. The new fragrance is distinguished by its carnal fullness and transparent floral quality. In other words, it’s a modern floral and fruity chypre. Exciting and very seductive. on Paris’s packaging and bottle follow the combination of revolution and tradition. The bottle is addressed to join the list of YSL’s most iconic perfume bottle designs. It comes in a multi-faceted glass flacon worthy of the precious liquid within.

JOY CORRIGAN
J
JOY CORRIGAN IS A FREE SPIRIT. AND EVEN THOUGH HER LIFE IS PRETTY CRAZY RIGHT NOW, IT HASN’T ALWAYS BEEN LIKE THAT.
oy grew up in a small town in North Carolina. From a big family, she would then spend her time riding horses, taking care of her pets (a goat and some llamas) or building forts with her six brothers and three sisters. By the way, did we mention she is from a big family? Big and a very close one, in fact. Her parents are still married and in love after 36 years together. Besides them, Joy’s brothers and sisters have always been a great support to her. Joy remember her early days modelling, when she would never think of how much she would miss her family because of constant trips around the world. t all started when Joy was 14 and was out shopping at the mall with her family. The coincidence is: a runway show was about to happen in the center court that day. When they got there, a show manager picked Joy out of the crowd and invited her to be in the show. The model couldn’t believe it and from that day on, it was all that she’s ever wanted to do. But it just became a real thing about two years ago. oy’s first agency in Miami was Next and now it’s like a real family to her. She has worked for several agencies around the world, what gives her the opportunity to travel and visit other countries. “My favorite part of my job is to experience different cultures, meet wonderful people and enjoy new food.” Joy has just fallen in love with Brazil, where she had the chance to photoshoot for Talk Magazine. he beautiful model has a few extra talents: She took and advanced degree black belt in a North Korea martial art. She may look sweet and innocent, but in case she needs to, she can

also kick ass. Joy has also published some pieces of her artwork as a painter. As a young child she would create elaborate and detailed scenes on the walls of her home. nd that’s how she can see connections between the activities: “Visual art, painting and shooting in front of a camera are very similar as they require a strong connection with your audience and they allow me to express myself artistically.” Right now, Joy’s real passion is acting and due to her career, she’s met some influential people in the film industry. “Look out for me in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s new movie 478, directed by Elliot Lestor. oy is living her dream and everyday she feels blessed for all the opportunities life has given her. If she had to sum up her past week, it would go like this: “I just came from Miami, it was swim week there and I walked for some really cool brands, including Indah and Frankie’s. During the days, I got to shoot with brands like Eberjay, Montce Swim, Misguided and Galore Magazine.” In the middle of all the craziness, Joy can always find some time to intereact with her fans on social media by snapping behind the scenes and posting runway pictures on her Instagram. ut once again, there she is ready to take another plane. “Sometimes it gets stressful with my busy schedule and I barely have any time for family and friends, or even for myself. But in spite of the hard work and crazy schedule, I can say what very few people can: I do what I love and I love what I do.” Joy completes.

THE COLORFUL ART OF ZILANDO FREITAS
BONO, NELSON MANDELA, NAOMI CAMPBELL, SOCCER PLAYER RONALDO AND THE LATE AMY WINEHOUSE. BESIDES FAME AND RECOGNITION, THESE PEOPLE HAVE A COMMON INTEREST: AT SOME POINT THEY HAVE DISPLAYED PIECES OF ART CREATED BY ZILANDO FREITAS, A BRAZILIAN ARTIST WHOSE CAREER NEEDS TO BE WATCHED. By Alice Morais

orn in 1965, in Sao Paulo, Zilando started painting in early 90’s, using acrylic paint on canvas to create abstract paintings that portray the culture, the behavior and the lifestyle of big cities around the world. Since then, he’s been constantly exhibiting his artwork in museus, art galleries and art shows. n 2004 Zilando created a technique using fabric knots on metal plates to recreate impressive country flags, logos and abstract images. Bright colors, always dominant on the pieces, reflect the artist’s personality and his positive vibe. reitas also has a social work project in Sao Paulo, offering low-income families opportunities to develop their creativity and accomplish some of their dreams.

DOCTOR PERITO: GIVING MEN MORE SELF ESTEEM. By Alice Morais
TALK Miami 64
T
he urologist Doctor Paul Perito has become well-known in Miami due to his specialized techniques helping to “raise” his patients’ self-steem. Differently from what many may think, penile prosthesis is no long just an esthethic procedure. Penile implants have become a very popular option for treating erectile dysfunction, a health problem that affects more than 30 million men only in the United States. esponsible for more than 5000 cases of penile implants in 18 years of career, Dr. Perito has gained recognition and his clinic became a number-one training center for male health problems, attracting doctors from all over the world, interested in learning Perito’s minimally invasive technique. erito Urology - clinic and training center - is located in a discreet building in Coral Gables. Right after the main door, around 30 men waited for the doctor’s arrival. Even though penile problems may be a delicate issue for some people, all the patients in the waiting room seemed very comfortable. That is probably because Perito’s clinic is not the conventional kind. s part of the decoration, sensual artworks give the building a relaxed and vivid atmosphere. Among beautiful pictures of nude women and sculptures representing the private moments of a couple, Paul Perito’s favorite piece is a completely non-sexual painting, signed by an unknown Colombian artist. “I usually receive many pieces as a thank-you gift from patients. And even more gifts from their wives”, laughs Perito. he doctor’s office resembles a typical living room, decorated with family photos, sport trophies and certificates from several universities from the US and other countries. Among them, University of Maryland School, Univeristy of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital (where Perito got a degree in General Clinic) and the Flinders University in South Australia (where the doctor specialized in Prostate Disorders). Board Certified Member of the American Urological Association, member of the Sexual Medicine and the Society of Prosthetic Surgeons, Dr. Paul Perito is currently the Chief of Surgey at the Coral Gables Hospital.

n the office, there is a minibar displaying different bottles of whiskey because twice a month a Men’s Club meeting takes place at the office terrace. The intention of these meetings is to reunite former patients who bring their friends and family members to talk over men’s health problems in a natural and relaxed way. “You may think that men don’t have this kind of conversation among them, but you’re mistaken. They do, just like women do. The difference is the absence of good information available to these men. There are many women’s magazines that approach important issues related to women’s health, but there is little information about men’s health. Our meetings help these men to get more important information. We discuss their doubts, show videos, have some quality time and enjoy good whiskey. Once there was a wedding attended by 200 guests.”, explains Perito. erito has developed a fast and precise technique. Through a three-centimeter cut made at the abdominal region, an inflatable prosthesis is concealed in the patient’s sexual organ. The prosthesis is connected to a small pump concealed in the scrotum. When the pump is activated, the male organ can be erect for as long as the man wants. The side effects from the penile implant surgery are the same from any other kind of surgical procedure. They are controlled by taking antibiotics during the postoperative care. fter a short period - around six weeks - the patient who underwent this sophisticated procedure will be able to have regular sexual activities. It’s surely an excellent investiment for the man’s self- esteem. Doctor Perito has definitely proven to be an expert.
