Lake Martin is the only body of water to receive the designation of Treasured Alabama Lake due to our excellent water quality. Its nearly 900 miles of shoreline and 41,000 acres of water are the gateway to adventure, culture, recreation and, most importantly, making memories.

This year, Lake Martin Tourism and Tallapoosa County Tourism are teaming up to offer you a guide filled with on- and off-lake fun.

Both Alexander City and Dadeville have beautiful and memorable downtown areas, both ready for visitors to explore.

Alexander City has a proud heritage, which dates back more than 160 years - making the city a fun place to visit and a great place to live. With so much to do and enjoy, everyone feels at home in Downtown Alexander City.

Main Street creates shopping and dining experiences, all unique to Alexander City. Spend a day on Main Street perusing the shops at The Square, Cloud Nine or Half Moon Market, or visit Carlisle’s for a taste of southern soda shop cuisine. Right down the way, Castelluccio’s offers fine italian cuisine, Alana’s has a delicious breakfast and lunch menu, and right behind Main Street, is JR’s, where the beer is cold and the wings are hot.

In addition to shopping, delicious food and rockin’ events, the Main Street Alabama designated community also works to preserve the historic buildings that add to the charm and character of the town.

Alexander City is jam packed with both fun and relaxing things to do all year round. The organization hosts events to keep residents happy and visitors coming back for more.

Just down the road from Alexander City and right off U.S. Highway 280, the town of Dadeville is a bustling and beautiful city that’s centered on a busy county courthouse. Cafés, boutiques and restaurants line the Downtown Square, where live music fills the air on Thursdays during the summer. The town is also home to several parks and event venues.

Both the Dadeville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Dadeville Beautification Board actively work to keep the community vibrant and lively by hosting community events and implementing beautification projects.

Just south of Dadeville, the wildly popular Blue Creek recreation area stretches a cool 2-miles along state Route 49 and is home to many restaurants and shops, such as Lake Martin Pizza Company, Lakeside Mercantile and 34 Market.

Fill your belly and tank at the one-stop-shop on the corner of state Route 49 and 34, buy fresh flowers across the street or grab a homemade waffle cone filled with custard ice cream topped with treats at Lake Martin Creamery.

Then not quite a mile down the road at StillWaters Resort, Coppers Grill offers casual dining with weekly specials and live music on the weekends. StillWaters is the home of one of only two public golf facilities on the lake, Harbor Pointe Marina and a yacht club.

CHEROKEE RIDGE ALPINE TRAIL @ OVERLOOK PARK

3 conjoined trails totaling 7.2 miles provide several combinations of hiking experiences with a picnic area and scenic overlook of Lake Martin, mountain longleaf pine, native azaleas and mountain laurel.

RUSSELL FOREST TRAILS

Weaving through the lush pines and hardwoods surrounding Lake Martin, trail association members enjoy more than 100 miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails inside the 25,000-acre living Russell Forest.

TRAIL is a steep 0.4 mile climb to the base of the tower. THE LAKESHORE TRAIL is 2.4 miles. From near the top of the mountain, the Lakeshore Trail makes a steep descent before winding along Lake Martin undeveloped shores. THE

DAVID M. FORKER ISLAND

HOP TRAIL stretches 1.4 miles

to the boat dock. When Lake Martin is lowered to winter pool levels, it is possible to walk another quarter mile crossing a series of islands inaccessible at full pool. LITTLE SMITH MOUNTAIN LOOP TRAIL is a 2.6 mile difficult and potentially dangerous trail. It boasts spectacular views and rock formations. Do not attempt this trail unless you are sure-footed and in better than average physical condition. This is NOT a trail for small or unruly kids.

THE JAMES M. SCOTT DEADENING ALPINE TRAIL

The most challenging and rewarding CRATA trail with a 4.2 mile loop with unique rock formations and spectacular vistas of Lake Martin, thickets of mountain laurel and rhododendron. You can take the crossover route and hike only 3.1 miles. There is also an emergency trail to the parking lot at this location.

NATURE’S WAY PRESERVE TRAIL

Free to the public, this 74-acre park features nature trails, lake overlooks and interpretive signs to assist in learning more about the lake’s natural environment.

HORSESHOE BEND NATIONAL MILITARY PARK TRAIL

The moderate 2.8 mile shady nature trail connects battle, barricade and village sites to views of the Tallapoosa River.

WIND CREEK STATE PARK

Located inside Wind Creek State Park, THE REUNION TRAIL stretches 3.8 miles in length and traverses both hardwood bottoms and pine forest. THE CAMPFIRE TRAIL is a 1.8 mile long moderate trail with several steep inclines. THE HORSE TRAIL is approximately 20 miles in length and offers many opportunities to overlook Lake Martin and lake wildlife.

CHARLES E. BAILEY, SR. SPORTPLEX TRAIL

Part of the Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail and an interesting combination of attractively wooded grounds, athletic fields and hiking trails that serve as a highly productive stop for migrant songbirds in spring and fall migration.

JOHN B. SCOTT FOREVER WILD

This trail is 4.7 miles that weaves along the Tallapoosa River through old growth hardwoods and along several beautiful, flowing creeks.

CHEROKEE BLUFFS DAM RAILROAD TRAILS AT YATES LAKE

Follow the old, historic railroad bed that was built in the early 1920’s and used in the construction of Martin Dam. You can hike 2.7 miles to the Channahatchee Creek or you can follow either the Highline or Lowline railroads and proceed to the highest point in Elmore County: Saddle Rock Mountain.

PIEDMONT PLATEAU BIRDING TRAIL

The Piedmont Plateau birding trail in East Central Alabama has 40 sites, from Alabama’s highest mountain to the shores of Lake Martin.

Lake Martin is home to world-class fishing. From hidden sloughs to big-water fishing, anglers can catch “the big one” here!

Scores of largemouth and spotted bass, bream, crappie and catfish populate Lake Martin’s 41,000-acres. But the lake’s most prized catches are the striped bass – some in the 40-pound range – and their hybrid cousins that test any angler’s skill and tackle.

Lake Martin fishing guide services offer visitors and residents the chance to become successful anglers while touring the beautiful waters.

Anglers also have the option to take off on their own exploration by boat or shore. Just make sure you have the correct fishing license. An Alabama resident freshwater

A number of bass angling tournaments are held at Wind Creek State Park each year. Professional and amateur fishermen alike can take part in these tournaments.

OGS Tournament Trails also schedules tournaments yearly that draw nearly 140 anglers from around the Southeast, adding to the fishing excitement.

GUIDE SERVICES

Horseshoe Bend

National Military Park

Known for its rich history, Horseshoe Bend National Military Park at Daviston is a national treasure. Horseshoe Bend honors the lives lost and calls attention to the great changes brought about by the Creek Indian War (1813-1814) and in particular, the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in March, 1814.

This final battle of the war, fought by General Jackson’s Tennessee militia, which was aided by the 39th U.S. Infantry Regiment and Cherokee and Lower Creek allies, against the Upper Creek Red Stick resistance, resulted in the deaths of more than 800 Creek warriors, an unknown number of women, children and elders, and 49 U.S. soldiers and Indian allies. This battle marks the largest loss of Native American life in a single battle with U.S. troops in U.S. history. The battlefield is on the National Register of Historic Places, and the park hosts educational programs and living history events.

The 2,040-acre park includes a 3-mile tour road and a shaded 2.8mile nature trail that connects battle,

barricade, and village sites to views of the Tallapoosa River. This moderate hike includes historical waysides and opportunities for solitude and reflection.

While not a dedicated recreational site, the park welcomes outdoor activities, such as hiking, fishing, bicycling, canoeing, bird watching and more. The best place for visitors to start is at the visitor center, open daily, which includes a renovated museum and a bookstore.

Admission to the park and special events are free, but donations to the park and contributions at the nonprofit bookstore help maintain the facility and supplement the costs of school outreach programs.

In March of every year, HBNMP hosts an anniversary commemoration of the final battle of the Creek Indian War with weekend activities and school group tours.

From Atlanta, GA - From Atlanta’s airport, take I-85 S towards Montgomery. From Montgomery, AL - Take US-231 out of Montgomery to AL-63 until you reach Kowaliga Bridge.

From Birmingham, AL - Take US Highway 280 E approximately 80 miles until you arrive in Alexander City, which is the home of Lake Martin.

Keeping the Lake Safer & Cleaner

Your visit to Lake Martin is safer and cleaner because Lake Martin Resource Association volunteers maintain more than 400 hazard buoys and sponsor monthly cleanups to enhance your experience here. Nearly half of the marine patrol approved buoys are lighted for nighttime navigation to help you safely return to the lake house or campground after viewing a spectacular sunset or dining under the stars at a lakeside restaurant. Volunteers regularly patrol the lake’s watershed, as well as the lake itself, to prevent trash from washing into the lake and to clean up any trash that finds its way to the water. Boating Safety 101

All boaters and riders should be up-to-date on lake etiquette and the newest boating laws and regulations before going out on the water this summer. These rules and laws can change frequently, and it is important to be aware of them.

BUOYS

One of the most critical things to understand on the lake are the buoys. Right now, there are more than 400 buoys on Lake Martin. Most of them are floating white buoys or poles that are six feet tall and have orange diamonds on them. Buoys are in place to alert boaters of an underwater hazard that could cause an accident.

Buoys with an orange circle indicate a slow-no wake zone, while buoys with a diamond and cross in the middle are used to alert boaters to keep out of certain areas.

Make sure to stay at least 100-feet away from the buoys to avoid whatever is beneath the surface and never pass between two buoys that are 200-feet from one another. The double buoy indicates that a hazard is

between the buoys.

If a buoy is within 100 feet of the shoreline, this could mean shallow water, or there is something underwater between the buoy and the shoreline that would cause an accident. Either way, if you see a buoy near the shore, steer clear.

It is important to note that within 50-feet of the shore, rocks and stumps are prevalent, and even if there is no buoy signaling a hazard, passing too close to the shore can make for a bad day.

Some buoys have a solar light mounted to the top, which increases visibility from a mile away; however, those are limited, and in the dark, it can be tough to see hazards.

To report damaged or misplaced buoys, locate the telephone number or email address on the buoy decal (lmra@lmra.info). It also has the buoy’s identifying letter and numbers, which tells the Lake Martin Resource Association crew the specific GPS location. They need this information so that they can get the buoy back where it should be.

WEATHER

It is imperative to keep an eye on the weather when on the water. It is Alabama, and the weather can change quickly. Storms pop up out of nowhere. Keep an eye on the sky and watch for changes in temperature, wind patterns and cloud formations, all signs that a storm is brewing.

Rather than getting caught in a storm, get to the closest safe shelter. If riding out the storm on the boat is the only

option, have everyone onboard wear a life jacket and move to the centerline. Keep the boat’s bow to the wind and ride the waves at a 45-degree angle.

TowBoatUS Lake Martin is another helpful number in the event of mechanical issues or even an accident. Both the Marine Police and TowBoatUS are available 24 hours a day.

BOATING LICENSE, CLASSES AND RULES

Boating/vessel license is required in Alabama. For details, visit ALEA.gov and search Boating Education and Operator Certification/License.

Non-residents may operate on Alabama waters up to 45 days per year without having to obtain a vessel operator’s license. Nonresidents who have obtained a vessel certification or license from their home state may use that in lieu of the Alabama Non-Resident Vessel Operator’s License; however non-resident vessel operators 12 or 13 years old, can only operate if there is someone 21 years old or older on board, who either has a valid vessel operator’s license in possession or falls under the 45-day exemption period because of non-residency status, and who is seated in a position to take immediate control of the vessel if necessary. Regardless of residency status, it is a good idea to take a boating class and study State of Alabama Boating Rules and Regulations

There are a number of new boaters on the water and not all of them may be aware of the standard safety procedures or

boating etiquette. Always be aware of other boats and make it a point to be informed of safety basics. And don’t forget to wave when passing other boaters!

Wind Creek State Park

Wind Creek State Park’s 1,445 acres hug the shoreline of Lake Martin and provide a recreational mecca and anglers’ paradise. One of the largest state-owned campgrounds in Alabama, WCSP offers affordable rates and recreational amenities to keep visitors playing at the lake for weeks.

There is much to do at Wind Creek State Park, such as the Screaming Eagle Aerial Adventure Tour, a twotiered canopy attraction with 11 zip lines, six sky walks and daring bridge walks. The canopy tour promises a bird’s-eye view of the lake and an exhilarating ride.

Wind Creek has a public beach, fishing pier, and offers boat rentals at their marina. Rockin’ K LLC offers guided trail rides on horseback for groups of up to four riders, an archery range and tons of activities. A must do at Wind Creek is climbing the silo, where you will get an amazing view of the lake. Other activities include a putt-putt

WCSP includes 320 acres devoted to 586 campsites, all of which offer water and electrical hook ups and 157 of which are right on the lake. There are 39 premium sites that include waterfront access, water, sewer, electrical and television service, as well as extralong pads to accommodate large RV units. Seven cozy camping cabins are available year-round, and the park offers Timberline Glamping accommodations as well.

WCSP is a staple and a must see destination while visiting the Lake Martin area.

The Largest Musclecar Museum

You may not realize it as you drive through downtown Alexander City, but behind the walls of a former 1940’s car dealership sits the largest musclecar museum in the world. However, once you step through the doors of the Wellborn Musclecar Museum, you will be welcomed with a bright and vibrant atmosphere full of not only the largest collection in the world, but also some of the rarest. Each time you visit the museum, you get the excitement of not knowing what you will see. With such a diverse collection, the cars are frequently switched out, allowing the chance for a totally different visit each time you come. There are a few of the famous cars that do stay at the museum full time though. Dad’s Car is the car that started it all, and is the first to welcome you as you

enter the museum. You will also get to see the K&K Insurance 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona that Bobby Isaac drove to win the 1970 NASCAR championship. And we can’t leave out the most unique car, the 1970 Paint Chip Cuda, which is 25 different colors and has its own unique story as to how it was created.

No matter if you consider yourself a car enthusiast or not, it is hard not to have a sincere appreciation for the collection Tim and Pam Wellborn have worked so hard to build. The museum is open to the public on Saturdays 10am-3pm. However, our suggestion is to set up a private tour. Have the chance to walk the museum with the curator, ask questions, and hear the background and stories of every one of the cars. Private tours are available by appointment only, and can be booked by calling 256-329-8474.

Grab your kayak & paddle the Tallapoosa River

A peaceful, family friendly adventure, the Tallapoosa River offers a combination of flat water and shoals rarely above class I (easy) on the International Scale of River Difficulty. But the level, flow, and volume of the Tallapoosa River are seasonal and dictated by Alabama Power and its hydroelectric Harris Dam located upstream near Wedowee, Alabama. Paddlers are strongly encouraged to monitor the online water level gauges kept by the U.S. Geological Service at the Wadley Bridge and Horseshoe Bend Bridge.

Tallapoosa River Kayaking and Canoeing trails begin with public access at Bibb’s Ferry, just across the county line in Chambers County, and end with public access at Germany’s Ferry Bridge. This section is 8.25 miles, which equates to a 5-hour float and features unique spots such at the Baptistry and the Fish Trap, brisk shoals, great fishing, a campsite, and stretches of flat-water paddling.

Horseshoe Bend access is the most popular and considered by many to be the most scenic. At 6 miles, it takes about 4 hours to complete this trail beginning with public access at the boat ramp at Horseshoe Bend National Military Park

and ending at Jay Bird Creek public access. This lower section has several patches of Shoal or Cahaba lilies, is known to have bald eagles, and features Peters Island, Laura’s Leap, side chutes, Irwin Shoals, and a campsite at Jay Bird Creek. Bear left or right to take the swift side chutes for more excitement.
