DEVASTATION How A Young Couple’s Wedding Plans Took A Turn... But God! by Tamara Hundley

I

t’s April 18, 2013. One month before the wedding and the bride and groom couldn’t have been more excited. They were planning and finalizing their wedding—making sure they had received all the responses from the invitations and counting down the days. But out of nowhere, April 19, 2013, they are served a devastating blow that stops them in their tracks. The bride received a diagnosis—she had breast cancer and needed to undergo a mastectomy. It is not hard to imagine the kind of heartbreak this would bring. This is exactly what happened to Sharea (31) and Lamonte (32) Leavy. The couple met at a nightclub and note that it was love at first sight. They dated four years after meeting, were engaged for one year and were married May 25, 2013. THE DEVASTATION As expected, initially Sherea was devastated by the diagnosis. When asked if she was upset with God, she responded, “I wasn’t angry with God, but I did ask Him why was this happening to me and what was I supposed to get out of it? What was I supposed to do with this and where was I supposed to go with this? Especially since I knew my prognosis was good…I didn’t fear that I was going to die or anything. So, my biggest question was why?” She added that she asked her husband why… over and over again—trying to get answers and understanding. After giving her first response to whether or not she was angry with God, Sherea realized that in the beginning she was a little angry with God for letting this happen to her, but stresses that she is here today only because of God. On the contrary, Lamonte said he was never angry with

10 REWIND / Fall 2014

God. He stated, “I was overwhelmed. This happened during a time that was already stressful, as we were planning for our wedding. There were a lot of things happening, so I just felt overwhelmed.” However, Lamonte emphatically states that he never had any thoughts of changing his mind about marrying Sharea. “I knew I loved Sharea, so that was never an issue. I just didn’t know if I was strong enough for both of us and for the situation itself.” He said he never had second thoughts about moving forward with the wedding because of his love for her. Ironically, Sherea’s love caused her response to be quite different. “Initially, I did have reservations about moving forward with the wedding…only because I was thinking that I was the one who was ill and I didn’t want to put this on Lamonte. So we did have the discussion about whether or not we should go through with the wedding and he said yes, he wanted to get married.” Sherea went on to say that was a difficult period, but it drew them closer together and made them stronger as a couple. “Going through something this serious so early on in our marriage helped solidify a lot for both of us regarding why we’re together and made us feel that God did actually put us together,” she added. Both Sherea and Lamonte’s reactions to the situation is a testament of their love for each other. Lamonte’s love caused him to stay, regardless of the diagnosis, even though it meant Sherea’s physical appearance would change. Sherea’s love for Lamonte caused her to be willing to call off the wedding and set him free because she realized this was not what he signed up for. However, their unconditional love for each other caused them to move forward with their wedding and begin their marriage together — while going through treatment…

THE CHANGE After the diagnosis Lamonte said things changed rapidly. He said, “Sharea definitely had plans about what she wanted to do after we were married…She wanted to have children and she wanted to move forward very quickly.” Sherea adds, “Things are different, but not in terms of our affection towards one another and intimacy. I never felt unloved by Lamonte. However, when you have breast cancer and you’re going through chemotherapy, your body is going through different changes where you don’t feel pretty anymore as a woman. I wondered if my husband thought I was still pretty.” She continues stating that Lamonte was really good about telling her she was beautiful. “He told me I was beautiful every day,” she added. “That made me feel better and good about myself.” Additionally, Sherea said when it became necessary for her to shave her head, Lamonte shaved it for her…as a matter of fact and another testament of love, while shaving her head, he shaved his as well. Sherea and Lamonte both laughed as she stated how they were both walking around with their heads bald. The act of shaving his head spoke volumes about his love for Sherea. While fighting back tears, Sherea adds, “Although he wasn’t going through the physical disease, he was going through it mentally with me. It is nice to know that you have that person whose with you.”

her healthy so we can continue moving forward and get back on track.” He gave an analogy of being on a highway, then taking an alternate/round-about route, only to return back to the main highway. He feels like they are on the alternate route now, but heading back to the main highway. He said they are holding onto their dreams and have faith for the future, but have decided to live in the now. Sherea was diagnosed with Estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) / Progesterone receptor-positive (PR+) cancer — the type where hormones feed the cancer and make it grow.

“While shaving my head, he shaved his as well...It’s good to know I have someone in this with me.” Sharea When asked how he felt about seeing his wife’s head shaved, Lamonte responded, “I didn’t mind the shaved head…I didn’t like the wigs (both laughing).” Sherea points out that during the time when she was having chemotherapy, she and Lamonte had a discussion about how he liked her without hair. His response was, “I didn’t fall in love with you because of your hair or just for your physical attributes.” She said this was very important because so many things about her had changed. She had a lateral mastectomy December 2013, so she no longer has both breasts. Both Sherea and Lamonte agree that the way they interact with each other, since the diagnosis, is different. They said it drew them closer to each other. “When you go through something like this as a couple, you realize that some of the little issues you used to have don’t really matter anymore,” Lamonte said. THE FUTURE As for the future, Lamonte says, “Moving forward, unfortunately, I can’t look ahead. You have to accept what the situation is and what it could or could not be. I had to change my mindset. I had to think more in the now. My goal is to get

Therefore, she said the purpose of the therapy she received was to suppress those hormones. She added that her doctor informed her and Lamonte that she would likely go into pre-menopause during chemotherapy. Since she was young, Sherea said her doctors expected her ovaries to keep producing eggs after treatment, but advised her to freeze her eggs, just in case. She further explained, “When we are ready for children, if I can’t get pregnant the way couples normally would, we will have a back up.” Sherea said she thought it was important to note this because too many young women, diagnosed with breast cancer, are unaware of how it can destroy their reproductive organs.

“When you go through something like this as a couple, you realize that some of the little issues you used to have don’t really matter anymore.”

THE ADVICE Sherea and Lamonte give the following advice to couples facing serious challenges. “Marriage counseling is a must”, Sherea said. “I advise couples to get marriage counseling…it prepared us for what we didn’t know we would have to face.” She added that reading the Word of God and prayer are also vitally important. “I prayed a lot and I felt overwhelmed because so many people were praying for me… family, friends, friends of friends, and church congregations. The fact that so many people were praying gave me strength.” She adds that Lamonte was also praying for her. He said he would pray in the spare bedroom and in his car, wherever it felt right. “I always ask God for guidance for whatever situation I face. I just want him to point me in the right direction,” Lamonte said. “I would advise couples to remember what brought them together. You will have to fall back on that to get you through the tough times,” he added.

Lamonte “We are receiving a huge amount of support from both my family and Lamonte’s. Especially Lamont’s family because my family is out of town,” Sherea continues. They both emphasize that family support is crucial and has helped them tremendously. THE TREATMENT Sherea finished her treatment in July 2014. It consisted of a lumpectomy in April 2013; then chemotherapy from June 2013 to October 2013; a mastectomy in December 2013; radiation from February 2014 to April 2014; reconstruction in May 2014; and then additional maintenance treatment until July 2014. THE CONCLUSION They both give God the glory and emphatically declare, “We absolutely would not have made it without God!” Sherea and Lamonte love the Lord and they worship at Living Waters Church in Havre De Grace, Maryland under the pastorate of Pastor Calvin Wiley.

‘Twas the night before Christmas When all through the house, I paced back and forth, Wondering what gift I would get my spouse

The Night Before Christmas

The children were nestled all snug in their beds, But trying to figure this out had caused such pain in my head, So I ran to the cabinet, and oh what a relief, A bottle of 800mg ibuprofen was there to eradicate my grief Then out of my room there arose such a clatter, I yelled up the stairs to see what was the matter, When what to my wondering eyes should appear? My husband adorned in gift-wrap, smiling from ear to ear In that moment, my worries disappeared I was quickly reminded that our best gifts were already here, We had given ourselves to each other for the rest of our lives, So any gifts along the way are just an added surprise By Tamara Hundley

Bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh. For this reason man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh (Genesis 2:23, 24).

aring for our mate’s well-being should be one of our highest priorities. After all, according to scripture, they are of our own flesh and bone. This view of marriage can be a beautiful thing and, often times, a hard thing. However, as a Physical Therapist I’ve found that there are many simple ways spouses can care for one another especially as it pertains to stress management. In my practice most of my clients’ medical issues are not directly related to stress. They are generally the result of trauma or pathology. However, there is a stress component because

of how trauma or pathology impacts one’s ability to work, take care of home and have social interactions. That stress can further exasperate an injury. Here is where the reduction of stress becomes essential and a spouse’s care can make all the difference. What are some of the little things you can do to strengthen your marriage and reduce stress? Consider pampering your spouse. You don’t have to wait for a date night, Valentine’s Day, or your anniversary to demonstrate your love for each other by pampering your spouse. Often it is the obscure moments that are most memorable! Not only will this draw you closer, but it has the added benefit of melting stress away. Pampering your spouse doesn’t have to be a lavish affair either. It can be as simple as a good foot massage. Foot massages are relaxing after a long day at work. They are also therapeutic

YourSpouse helping to reset the plantar fascia. Tight plantar fascia can eventually cause plantar fasciitis, a painful foot condition that responds favorably with physical therapy. Additionally, there are acupressure points on the sole of the foot, which refers to various organs. Many reflexologists believe addressing the sore points on the foot provides benefits to organ and overall health.

Make the foot massage a quality experience by following these few simple steps:

1

One evening get a bottle of baby oil, pour about 2 tablespoons into a tea cup and warm it for 1 minute in the microwave.

2

When it is done, grab a towel and place that towel across your lap.

3

Have your spouse sit across from you placing his/her feet on the towel.

4

Pour some of that warm baby oil (you don’t need a lot) into your hands and gently massage the top and bottom of each foot.

Apply just a little more pressure at the bottom of the feet, but listen for verbal cues and even ask for feedback to make sure you’re meeting his/her specific needs. Just ten to fifteen minutes (5-8 minutes on each foot) can work wonders. I heard it once said, “Husbands, if you want to improve things in the bedroom, start by serving your wife in

other ways.” Massaging each other’s feet could end up being good foreplay! Create long lasting loving moments with simple thoughtful actions! HOLIDAY

IDENTitY THEFT How To Prevent Indentity Theft During The Holiday Season by Zelma Allen e are stressed, sleep deprived, and running around W trying to get all of our shopping done before relatives arrive. While we are spreading all that holiday cheer, the jingling

sound we hear is not sleigh bells, but the sound of money flying out of our pockets into the hands of the crooks. They are emptying our bank accounts, maxing out our credit cards, destroying our credit and stealing our identities. Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes and, unfortunately, identity thieves never take a holiday. Identity theft is a year-round problem, but it is known that the hectic holiday season is prime time for this crime because of the increased time we spend shopping. Distracted and rushing we become easy targets in the mall and on-line. But let’s be clear, identify theft doesn’t just happen online. Identity thieves are very resourceful. They rummage through our garbage, the trash of different businesses, public dumps and our lost wallets and cell phones. They may call or email us pretending to work for legitimate companies, medical offices, clinics, pharmacies, institutions we trust and government agencies attempting to trick us into revealing personal information. Once identity thieves have our personal information, they can drain our bank accounts, max out our credit cards, open new utility accounts, and get medical treatment on our health insurance.

20 REWIND /Fall 2014

In some cases, identity thieves have gone as far as to use their victims’ names while being arrested. There are several types of identity theft to guard against. The most common is internet identity theft. Internet identity theft is very different in several ways. For one it is more difficult to detect. Common identity theft often involves physical stealing; such as wallets, mail, checks and identification cards. Internet theft steals confidential documents; such as receipts and tax returns from computers without our knowledge. Our personal home computers collect and store all sorts of personal information in the cache, browser history, temporary internet files, and passwords hidden deep within our hard drives. Our files can be used by internet thieves and hackers to reconstruct confidential information including credit cards, social security numbers, addresses, and login IDs. Internet identity thieves and hackers harvest confidential information through malware subtypes such as worms, spyware, viruses, crimeware, and rootkits. It was reported in 2013 that identity fraud increased by 15 percent, while the dollar amount stolen held steady. Approximately 2.3 million more adults were victimized by identify fraud in 2013 compared to 2012 resulting in more than 13.5 million adults becoming victims of identity fraud in the Unit-

4. Be aware of who is around and what is said when we talking on cell phones in public. Someone may be listening while we are sharing potentially identifying information, such as our home address. 5. Do not leave packages, briefcases, purses, luggage, or other types of bags in plain view inside the car. If leaving something in the car is essential, place it in the trunk before arriving at the mall parking lot. Thieves have been known to watch parking lots to catch us storing things in our trunks.

ed States alone. One of the key factors potentially contributing to the increase in incidents was the significant rise in data breaches. It was found that 16 percent of Americans, or about 38 million people, were notified of a data breach in 2013. Consumers receiving a data breach notification were 10 times more likely to become victims of identify fraud. Identity theft is a headache no matter what, but we can keep it from becoming a migraine by protecting our personal information and closely monitoring our existing accounts and credit reports. Most identity theft victims don’t personally lose money; however, thieves leave a trail of poor financial behavior under a victim’s name resulting in negative accounts on our credit reports and lower credit scores. Victims whose personal information was misused are more likely to experience financial problems such as dealing with debt collectors, and having to repeatedly correct credit reports. We need to take precautions so that we won’t have to spend $500.00 and 30 hours (the average cost and time) repairing the damage to our good name.

Whether we are hitting the mall or the send key, listed below are tips to smart and safe shopping this holiday season: 1. Streamline our wallets. Use a credit card for shopping and only carry the credit card in use. We should leave our social security card, library card, wholesale club card, excess credit cards and excess cash at home. By utilizing this one credit card we can better monitor spending. Further, if someone steals our wallet we can alert the card issuer before we are liable for any the fraudulent charges. While that card is closed and reissued our other accounts are safe and usable. 2. When paying with a credit card, never let the clerk take the card out of sight. When the clerk swipes the card it should take place in clear view. 3. When entering a PIN we should use our free hand or our body to obscure the key pad from the view of others around us.

6. We should not sign up for store credit cards at the checkout counter. Take the application home and fill it out in private. When we complete this application in a public place, it may expose our personal information to watching eyes. The 10 percent discount is not worth the risk. 7. We should update the security software on our computers. Our passwords should be very strong, and should not be our date of birth or other personal information that might be easy for someone else to guess. 8. We should beware of email scams. We should remember no legitimate company or organization will ask for our personal information via email. 9. We should be savvy online shoppers. If we are unfamiliar with an online business, we should research the company by searching for complaints and reviews. Additionally, read the privacy policy to understand how the personal information we provide will be used. Paying with a credit card rather than a debit card or checking account gives us the most legal protection in case the goods or services are misrepresented or never delivered.

10. Using social media is a great way to keep in touch with friends and relatives, but we should not post our address, social security number, birth date or other personal information. We should be aware that digital photos may have geocoding features which reveal the locations where the pictures were shot, such as our home. We should use the privacy settings on the social networks that limit the personal information that we share. 11. We should only connect to wireless networks that require a network security key or certificate. If we use a wireless internet connection at home, be sure that the security features are turned on. Additionally, set your own password instead of using the default password. 12. If we are going to shop online, we should make sure the site is secure. According to the Better Business Bureau, sites that have technology to secure transactions will have “https” instead of “http” in the Web address of the page that asks for credit card information. Another way we can tell if the site is secure is by looking for an icon of a locked padlock. This icon is usually found at the bottom of the screen. 13. We should copy the front and back of all credit and debit cards. Keep those copies in a secure location (not on our computer or mobile devices) so we can quickly place a hold on our accounts if we need to. 14. If we are going away for the holiday, we should arrange for the post office to hold our mail until we return. 15. We should buy a cross-cutting paper shredder to dispose of any documents we no longer need which contain our personal information. If we need to keep certain documents, place them in a locked drawer or fire proof safe.

keep a watchful eye on our personal credit information. We should scrutinize our credit card bills for any fraudulent activity that can help to minimize our losses. Unrecognized charges listed on our credit card statements are often the first time we will realize that our identity has been stolen. Finally, if we suspect that our identity has been stolen, we should not wait until after the holidays to report the crime. We need to immediately contact our creditors and Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian, the three major credit bureaus. Thankfully, things have changed and we only need to call one credit bureau to place fraud alerts on all three credit reports. An initial fraud alert can make it harder for an identity thief to open more accounts in our name. When we put the alert on our report, a business must verify our identity before it issues credit and the business should contact us. The initial alert stays on our report for at least 90 days and can be renewed thereafter. Additionally, the alert allows us to order one free copy of our credit report from each of the three credit reporting companies. However, we have to make sure the credit reporting companies have our current contact information so they can get in touch with us. Remember, a fraud alert is free.

The Federal Trade Commission has a link on its Web site with steps to take if we are victims of identity theft. Go to www.ftc.gov and click on the link for consumers or you can call them at

WINTERIZING YOUR HAIR My clients often complain that their hair and scalp feel dehydrated during this time of the year and I am often asked how to keep the hair and scalp moisturized during the winter season? The answer to the question is not always a simple one. However, having some foundational information can help troubleshoot hair challenges and connect the dots. 24 REWIND / Fall 2014

What causes the moisture deficiency during this time of the year? There are several causes, but the first is the lack of moisture in the air. Winter air is very cold and blustery, imagine how hydrated your hair and scalp would be if you where to place your head in a freezer constantly. It’s simply not a good thing. The cold air vacuums out the moisture. What we do to stay warm is a second factor. Often we do whatever it takes to stay warm including wearing different types of hats and scarves to block the elements. Usually these garments are made of natural fibers like cotton and wool. These two fabrics may be great for keeping warm, but they are an enemy to hair. Clients complain of not only dryness, but breakage around the hairline that usually occurs where the hat or scarf touches and constantly rubs. The reason these two natural fibers are not recommended is because they will absorb moisture from hair. Therefore, wear hats that have a silk, satin or rayon lining in them. Finally, forced air heating can also rob hair of moisture. It is the equivalent of being in a heat box used to dry meat, flowers, etc.

Health & Beauty How do I know if my hair is dry?

• The hair is dry to the touch. • The hair looks dry and lacks natural luster and shine. • The hair feels brittle • The scalp is ashy and sometimes itchy. How do I Combat This? First, start from the inside. Whatever we consume filters through our hair, food, medication, and even illegal drugs! Therefore, drink plenty of water!! Our body is made of 60% to 65% water, and one of the first signs of the body being dehydrated is dry scalp and hair. Give the body what it wants and what it needs. Additionally, certain foods aid in the hydration process. Salmon, Herring, Sardines, Trout, Mackerel, Avocados, Pumpkin Seeds and Walnuts are key foods because the Omega3fatty acids are found in these. Your body doesn’t produce them; however, it needs Omega3fatty acids for healthy hair growth. In fact, approximate 3% of the hair shaft is made from these fatty acids. These natural oils will aid in keeping your hair and scalp hydrated. Other foods like sweet potatoes, eggs, spinach, lentils, Greek yogurt, and blueberries help build a healthy foundation. Once the inside is thoroughly moisturized, external treatments can be put in place. Moisturize, moisturize, and moisturize some more! Great moisturizing conditioners are key. Conditioners with ingredients that include shea butter, Aloe Vera, and Collagen are great for keeping the hair moisturized. Additionally, I recommend that a deep conditioning treatment be applied to the hair every two weeks during the winter.

Here’s a step by step that will help you through the winter.

• Shampoo your hair with moisturizing shampoo 2x’s. Sulfate free shampoos are great as well. • Towel blot the hair then apply your conditioner generously. • Saturate your towel with warm water, squeeze the excess water out, then wrap it around your hair firmly. • Place a plastic cap on your head.

• Using a hooded dryer or heating cap, process for 20 minutes. • Rinse well. • Follow with a leave-in conditioner and or moisturizer. • Proceed with your hairstyle. My secret weapon to fight against dry hair and scalp is an old fashioned Hot Oil treatment. This one is amped up. • mix 1/2 ounce of jojoba oil, 1/2 ounce of extra virgin oil, & 4 drops of tea tree oil( optional if you have dry, flaky, itchy scalp). • Shampoo your hair one time • Apply oil mixture to wet hair • Wrap with a warm towel • Place a plastic cap on and process for 20 minutes under a hooded drier or heating cap. • Rinse and shampoo your hair one time • Condition. Note: If hair is longer double or triple your ingredients. If after following these steps your dryness doesn’t subside, please contact your local licensed hairstylist for further treatment.

hanks to the Hot Spots column I have the privilege of enjoying one of my favorite past-times: restaurant hopping. Every restaurant has its own signature and each experience expands my palate. Unfortunately some of those signatures are illegible and takes my palate on a journey it just doesn’t want to take . . . ever again . . . in life. I don’t write about those places so please know if you hear about a restaurant in REWIND, it is because the establishment is worth the exposer. “Busboys and Poets” is worth it for more reasons than food. It is not often that I encounter a restaurant that, at its core, has a deeper conscious than dishing up amazing food. When I do happen upon a restaurant that attempts to blend the love of good food with anything else, the result is usually a train wreck. Thus, in my mind, “Busboys and Poets” already had several strikes against it before I’d even tasted the food. However, at the encouragement of several friends and coworkers I gave the restaurant a try. I’m beyond happy with the results. Often restaurants get talked up because of commercial appeal. It’s the “it place” and therefore, everyone must go. The restaurant experiences rapid growth and new locations are opened year after year. Consequently, the food gets worse

“To say that I was impressed by my overall experience at “Busboys and Poets” is an understatement.”

year after year too, but people still go because of brand loyalty. I thought this was the case with “Busboys and Poets.” In fact I purposely visited the Hyattsville location because it is the fourth of four locations. If any of the locations were going to experience a reduction in quality resulting in a poor food experience it would be Hyattsville. I was proven completely wrong. The food was amazing. I started with the Shrimp and Crab Fritters. They were fried perfectly. There was nothing over/underdone about them. Resting in a creamy lobster sauce, the fritters offered a burst of seafood flavor without being fishy. On a bit of a seafood binge I continued my meal with Blackened Salmon. The salmon was some of the best I’ve ever had. It was cooked to perfection offering moist, well-seasoned morsels. In this case, wellseasoned is not code word for salty. They’re combination of herbs and spices added impressive flavor that trumps saltiness any day. The salmon was served with asparagus and wild rice – two great choices. I ended my meal full, satisfied and grateful to have been proven wrong. It stood up to its hype . . . and then superseded it. This establishment definitely earned my approval with its food, but what makes it special is its commitment to feeding more than the stomachs of its patrons. “Busboys and Poets” endeavors to feed minds. Through “Busboys and Poets”, Andy Shallal (owner and proprietor) has created a platform for artists and activists to be heard, read, and experienced. Each

of the four locations hosts major events such as book signings, talks and poetry readings. The Hyattsville location hosts a weekly Open Mic Night on Thursdays (9pm, Zinn Room, $5), providing a stage for new voices and an opportunity to dialogue and exchange ideas. Additionally, the entrance to the restaurant is flanked by a bookstore. The bookstore is full of an array of books that challenge the heart and entice the mind. To say that I was impressed by my overall experience at “Busboys and Poets” is an understatement. Having purposely avoided the restaurant for years, I was sad I hadn’t indulged sooner. It would definitely have been on my “Must Repeat” list. Dining at “Busboys and Poets” helps you understand how a restaurant can be more than just food and mean more than ingredients. It can take on a more powerful form as “Busboys and Poets” has. Busboys and Poets Tribal Statement: Busboys and Poets is a community where racial and cultural connections are consciously uplifted...a place to take a deliberate pause and feed your mind, body and soul...a space for art, culture and politics to intentionally collide...we believe that by creating such a space we can inspire social change and begin to transform our community and the world.
