GETTING TO EN KNOW... Y
esterday, we had an interview with one of the lovely chairs of the General Assembly Konstantina Abbas-Decka and the royal beauty Zeynep Ekinci from Counter Terrorism Committee. We hope you will enjoy while reading it.
Can you briefly introduce yourself? Konstantina: I am Konstantina Abbas-Decka. I How am half Greek half Palestinian. This is my fifth was your MUN conference, being the first one outside my trip to Istanbul country. I also attend EYP conferences. and did anything inZeynep: No, I am not capable of doing anything teresting/awkward happen briefly. (We, as the press team, understood this during your trip? fact when we saw her thirty-page-long study K: I spent twelve hours in a bus, with guide. only twenty minutes of sleep. We were laughing uncontrollably with my friends. The trip continued with the old ladies shushing and the What were your expectations from IELMUN 2013 bus driver warning us to be silent. and how is it going so far? What is your best MUN memory? K: It was definitely the closing ceremony of Thessaloniki-MUN. During the sessions, I had spent a wonderful time with my delegates. When I was on stage to take my diploma, my delegates started cheering and shouting for me. It was great. Z: MUNTR - IEL delegation’s room - Ata- Barlas (The chair denied to explain more.) Would you rather have hiccups or feel like you need to sneeze but cannot for the rest of your life? K: I would rather have no life. Z: Both would make you look as if you have issues but I would rather have the second one because hiccups are worse.
K: I want everyone to be satisfied with my services. I want to learn more about the Turkish culture. As a Palestinian, my committee topics mean a lot to me. Even though we didn’t get any Redbulls so far, the conference is really great. Z: This year I was expecting the conference to be more suppressive, but so far everything is going smoothly.
Dear Diary, Y
esterday, the first official sessions took place. The GA set their agenda as the Treatment of POWs while the CSW chose to start off the debate with the issue of ‘Equal Treatment of Women in Underdeveloped and Developing Countries’. An hour later, the first coffee break took place in the school grounds where the Orga Team was caught planning to use the large size Coffee-mate Milk Powder in the next years’ conferences as well. The Moroccan delegate (Marcel Amaadacho) of the SR caught our attention with his traditional clothing and explained his possession of these garments with his father being a Moroccan. Also,
a large crowd was formed around the USA delegate of the CTC as he was claiming to prove that very tiny 10 TL’s were written on the 10 TL banknotes. He turned to be, in fact, right. The UNCIO 1945 seems to be the most enthusiastic committee with delegates very willing to contribute, such as those of China, USA and Uruguay. They had chosen their first topic as the ‘Purposes and Principles of the UN Organization’. At one point, the delegate of China was caught bursting out: ‘What is your description of equality?’ and the delegates of the US and Uruguay, who were seated right next to each other, engaged in heated arguments.
The delegate of USA, who apparently has a loud voice by nature, announced that IEL is the abbreviation of ‘International Enthusiastic League.’ This committee also had a moment of silence in respect to the death day of former US President Roosevelt. They also were very committed to acting according to “their time” and gave reactions such as ‘What is that?’ upon seeing a press member with a laptop. The CTC was a bit on the calmer side as a committee; the chairs were encouraging the delegates to talk, ‘You voted for it! You should speak about it!’ they urged. The point at issue was ‘Post bin Laden Al Qaeda & Terrorism in Afghanistan & Pakistan.
As the day went on, two blocks formed in the CSW: one representing the pro-human rights, modern states and the other supporting the views of mostly Islamic countries, which stated that they did not really give much emphasis to women’s equality with men as they saw men as superior. This, as can be imagined, caused many arguments between the two blocks. Then, a mock debate was decided to be held and suddenly it was gay rights and gay marriage that they were having disputes about. The second mock debate was about the use of alcohol and drugs such as mari-
juana. The delegate of Uruguay cried out: “Make marijuana legal. When you’re on marijuana, you forget all of your problems.” And when he was told that marijuana could be lethal, he protested: “You smoke, you die; you don’t smoke, you die.” In the afternoon, the chairs of the GA carried out an “energizing” operation which consisted of ‘the Banana Dance’ and ‘Singing in the Rain’ conducted by Chair Konstantina and a dance song lead by a guest (the CSW’s France delegate) following the coffee break. The sessions came to an end at

O
n Saturday, the first day of IELMUN, the school was almost empty, a few SEVERAL delegates were present and the arrivals were of a slow pace. Upon finding this odd and disappointing, the Press Team decided to conduct an investigation regarding the whereabouts of the delegates. During their search, they stumbled upon the famous restaurant chain Subway and were shocked by what they saw inside. All of the missing delegates were seated on tables or stools, enjoying subs in their formal clothes. Others were in the line ordering food. After the delegate number in the shop had risen
to 50, the inevitable offer came from the delegate of Sri Lanka. “Why don’t we just hold the debates here?” he suggested and when his words were met with approval, all delegates settled to start lobbying. The agenda was also converted a bit and the first topic to be discussed was “The Issue of the Excessive Time it Takes for the Bread to be Ready for Serving”. The delegate of Myanmar, who has waited for his order for 25 minutes because of this issue, held a passionate speech. The delegates will gather in Subway every morning at 10 a.m.

A MEMORABLE NIGHT
Y
esterday night, IELMUN 2013 had its first social event. It was the one all the delegates, especially the ones who don’t live in Istanbul were waiting for: the Bosphorus boat trip. To be honest, the trip was wonderful, and the participants who has not attended have the right to feel sad for themselves. Just before the event, the Orga and the Press Teams had very sad moments as a Public Relations member of IELMUN, Cem Vardar, will leave Istanbul in the 3rd of September and move to the United States. Orga Team made a video for him expressing how much they would miss him. All the members of the two teams gathered in a classroom,
pretending that they would talk about the first day of the conference. The Director General Furkan Şener told people that he was planning to show a video about former MUN memories so that Cem wouldn’t guess the surprise. This video was so emotional that a lot of people understood how much Cem meant to them. After these sentimental moments, everyone went to the courtyard again in order to head to the school buses. All participants had to leave the school campus at 19:30. It took nearly half an hour to get to Kabatas. In the beginning, the participants gathered together and started having their first drinks. After half an hour, nearly all the participants were en-
joying the music and were all showing their dancing skills. Sometime later even the boat started bouncing with the waves of Marmara and the rhythm of the wonderful music. Especially the German participants proved us that they know how to have fun since they impressed everyone with their wild dancing. Also for the more romantic people, there were beautiful views from the Bosphorus and the breath-taking Bogazici Bridge. As the Press Team, we can honestly say that this boat tour and the night as a whole was very memorable and it will stay in the memories of the participants forever.

Sicherheitsrat diskutiert Nordkoreas Innenpolitik
A

Berfin’in yanıtıysa: ‘Affeder!’ olmuş.
I TATLI SERT
