Gro up P ublisher ’s Letter I love summer. But every year, there comes a time when I start craving wings, an ice-cold beverage and the sound of cannons firing behind me. Yeah… I’m ready for some football. And it’s finally here. We’re kicking off football season with a one-on-one interview with Tampa Bay Bucs center Ali Marpet. You may have recognized him on our cover. On the field (and on our cover), he wears his super intense game face. But off the field, Ali is a funny, light-hearted jokester who wasn’t afraid to share his softer side. My favorite story from our interview? His retelling of the time he wore khaki shorts to Bern’s Steak House, not realizing the dress code, and — I’ll let you read the rest. Find the whole story and the rest of our interview on page 12. Of course, the start of football season also means back to school. Last year, our South Tampa Whiz Kids feature was such a hit we decided to bring it back for an encore. We asked local principals to nominate students who are doing something special either in academics or the community. We’re honored to share their achievements here on page 33. While you’re following the Bucs this season, make sure you’re also following us on Facebook and Instagram @southtampamagazine. This fall, we’re upgrading our game plan: to bring the best of the South Tampa lifestyle straight to your newsfeeds. We can’t wait to connect with you! Sincerely,

Tampa Bay Buccaneer Ali Marpet is taking on a new position at center and exceeding every expectation Interview by Shawna Wiggs | Photography by Gabriel Burgos Written by McKenna Kelley | Art Direction by Heather Fitzpatrick
oogle the Bucs’ Ali Marpet, and you’ll notice something. Unless he’s on the football field, nearly every photo of Marpet shows him giving the camera a thumbs-up. “It’s my signature move,” Marpet says. “It’s my go-to in pretty much all pictures.” He’s been giving a lot of thumbs-ups the last few years. The Hobart and William Smith Colleges alumnus became the

highest-drafted player in the history of Division III football when the Bucs selected him in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Now entering his third season with the Bucs, Marpet is changing positions on the offensive line, moving from guard to center.

Marpet sat down with South Tampa Magazine two days before reporting to One Buc Place for training camp to talk football, life off the field and food — lots of food.

Group publisher Shawna Wiggs interviewed Ali Marpet at The Hip Room Dance Studio in Tampa Heights thought it would actually help make me a better basketball player and that there would be things I could draw from football. For whatever reason I stuck with football, and it ended up working out.
Q: Back in 2015, you were the only Division III player invited to the Senior Bowl, and just months later you became the highest-drafted pick in the history of D-III football. What does it mean to you to have had this much success in your career coming from a small university? A: It’s totally unique. I also feel like I am representing small schools and the fact that smallschool players can be successful in the NFL. Q: You also earned the all-league selection two times playing basketball at Hastings High School back in New York. A: For a while, I actually thought that I was going to play basketball in college at the Division III level; I was considering playing both football and basketball. Q: Are there any skills you took from the basketball court that you apply to football? A: Just in general, I think you can always draw from other sports [experience]. For instance, early on I was a basketball player. My freshman and sophomore years in high school, I had a gym coach convince me to play football because he
Q: You will be making a transition from guard to center this upcoming season. How did that change come about? A: We signed J.R. Sweezy, an offensive lineman — a guard — from Seattle, and this is going to be his first year healthy with us. I think the reason I’ll be moving to center is so he can play guard. Then from there Coach Koetter made the decision to put me in center. I think that Coach Koetter is just trying to figure out how to put the best five offensive linemen on the field, so [he’ll go with] whatever configuration that looks like. He thought that looked like me at center, so we’ll see how it plays out. Q: What do you look forward to the most in getting to play this new position? A: Center’s unique in that the center is responsible for getting the offensive line all on the same page. Another thing about [playing] center is that it’s kind of a game within a game. You see certain things, and you have to be able to figure things out on the fly to get us in the best position to block the defense. It’s a new challenge. Q: You do a lot of charity work within the Tampa area, from shaving your head to raise awareness for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation to visiting wounded warriors at the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital
in Tampa. What drives you to do this kind of work for the community?
AGE: 24 HOMETOWN: HASTINGSON-HUDSON, NY COLLEGE MAJOR: ECONOMICS HOBBIES: READING, GOING TO THE BEACH CHEAT MEAL: GREEN LEMON TACOS [SEE ALI’S TACO ORDER AND THE FULL INTERVIEW AT SOUTHTAMPAMAGAZINE. COM/ALIMARPET] FAVORITE BOOK: “THE BOOK OF JOY” BY THE DALAI LAMA, ARCHBISHOP DESMOND TUTU AND DOUGLAS CARLTON ABRAMS FUN FACT: MARPET IS THE BUCCANEERS’ NFL PLAYERS ASSOCIATION PLAYER REPRESENTATIVE
A: It feels like the right thing to do. As an NFL player, you do have a platform to impact a lot of people. I think it’s important to maximize it and be out there in the community. Q: What was your first major splurge after signing your contract with the Buccaneers? A: I don’t think I splurged. Dinners, maybe? [laughs] I like eating out, so I think that’s the biggest change; I eat out more. Q: Do you have any favorite restaurants in Tampa? A: All of them [laughs]. Green Lemon for Taco Tuesday. For a steak, Bern’s Steak House is a phenomenal place. There are a lot of good restaurants in Tampa. Q: As an athlete, healthy eating is key to staying in shape. What healthy foods do you always keep in your fridge? A: For breakfast, it’s always some form of oatmeal with peanut butter, eggs, a banana and Greek yogurt. That’s always breakfast. Q: All together? A: All together. It’s a hearty breakfast. Everyone’s got eggs, but I crush, like, eight eggs at a time. It’s quite a bit. Q: How do you like your eggs? A: I have to switch it up. It’s hard to [eat them] some mornings, but more often
than not it’s scrambled. But you have to do it low and slow with a lot of TLC. Otherwise it becomes difficult to eat. There is a method because if you [eat them] too fast then it becomes hard. You’re choking them down, and it’s no fun. Q: What do you like to do when you’re away from the game? A: I’m a big beach guy, so I usually go out to St. Pete Beach. My dad and my mom both have places in St. Pete. My dad’s place has a pool, so I usually hang out and lounge around his pool and do sort-of staycations over there. Q: You said that you don’t love fashion, but do you have a favorite clothing brand or style? A: Hawaiian shirts are a pretty constant theme. I’m also not a fan of pants at all. I don’t like jeans. I don’t like khakis. I wear them when I have to, though. For instance, I went to Bern’s in shorts. I didn’t know you have to wear pants. Luckily they had pants for me, so I had to put those on over my shorts. Q: Wait, they loaned you pants? A: Yes, they loaned me pants, and they actually fit pretty comfortably. I enjoyed the rest of my dinner, but it was a little bit of a hiccup in the night. I was trying to get around it, but it’s a hard and fast rule [laughs]. Don’t go to Bern’s with shorts on. They were the khaki shorts, at least. The khaki shorts are my dress shorts [laughs].

any parents are surprised to learn that the American Association of Orthodontists recommends children be seen by an orthodontist by age 7. When you’re making your back-toschool checklist, be sure to add a visit to Dr. Alex Gutiérrez and his caring, professional staff at Gutiérrez Orthodontics for kids 7 and older. Late summer or early fall is the perfect time to get traditional braces or Invisalign®. The future is bright

e asked principals from area schools to nominate students who stood out among their classmates. Many of them said it was hard to choose just one or two. There are a lot of great kids out there doing wonderful things, but we only had room to share the stories of a few. The students featured here are determined to make the world a better place to live, whether it is by devoting themselves to helping others, solving problems, speaking up for injustices, or bringing beauty to the world.
Meet these future leaders on the following pages and get ready for a brighter, better future.

M
ore than half of the members of their group had faced some type of discrimination. Ansley Gonzalez has been told that girls are weak. Brigid Averill-Snell has been told girls don’t know how to kick. Molly Thompson has been ignored when she has asked to join a game on the playground. All five students were interested in researching equal rights for their International Baccalaureate (IB) end-of-year project, but once they decided to focus on gender inequality in sports, they realized how much the issue affects girls. Through their research, they learned that, as they grow older, many girls start doubting their abilities and strength in sports. This may prevent them from trying new sports or cause them to stop participating altogether. To help solve the problem in Hillsborough County, the group asked Superintendent Jeff Eakins to support the establishment
of gender-neutral sports teams in the county’s elementary schools. They also raised awareness of the problem by sharing information with Tampa’s La Gaceta newspaper for an article on the topic and by writing, producing, starring in and editing a 45-second informational video. The mash-up parody of the Broadway musicals “Hamilton” and “Wicked” was shown to students at their school, MacFarlane Park Magnet School for International Studies, and is available to other schools through the district’s network. “Sports are a way to bring people together,” says Ansley. “Women should be a part of that.” The whole group agreed with Benjamin’s statement that they learned a lot about gender equality as well as how to communicate and work as a team — valuable skills in life on and off the playing field.

kid s Isabella Rodriguez
I
sabella Rodriguez had a busy year. She played the lead in “Peace, Love and Understanding” at Woodrow Wilson Middle School, won awards for trumpet and violin performances and as a student conductor for band, was a member of All-County Chorus and All-County Band and was president of the National Junior Honor Society. Forget triple threat; Isabella Rodriguez is a quadruple threat. She dances, acts, sings and plays musical instruments. It is hard for her to pinpoint which she loves best, but this vivacious teen spends an average of three hours each night practicing. “It can be challenging,” she says. “Lots of evenings after dinner I stay up late, but I am doing what I love, and I know it is going to take hard work.” Just this summer, Isabella has attended band and theatre camps at Plant High School (where she’ll attend ninth grade this year) and the University of Tampa. She auditioned for and was accepted to Showstoppers — an intensive three-week musical theatre program culminating in five performances — at the Straz Center’s Patel Conservatory. Even when she’s participating in her Girl Scout troop, she puts her entertaining skills to work. To earn her Bronze Award she produced a solo vocal show, “Stars, Stripes & Songs,” that she performed at area nursing and assisted living homes. Performing may just be in her blood — both of her parents are musicians, and her mom says she was attending musical performance in the womb. “For as long as I can remember I have been performing,” Isabella says. “I used to put on a show every night after dinner for my family. I love every aspect of entertaining. I can not imagine doing anything else.”

A
ndres Sada’s goal is to visit every country in the world, but first he decided to represent a few. As one of the first members of Woodrow Wilson Middle School’s Model United Nations (MUN) team, Andres was able to learn more about the world without ever leaving Tampa. “In MUN, each school represents a nation, and you have to resolve issues with other countries and learn how to make allies,” he explains. During his time at Wilson Middle, Andres and his teammates had the chance to go to several MUN conferences at the University of South Florida and attend the annual conference in New York City. They spent hours working together on their MUN presentations — researching their countries, writing position papers and practicing opening statements. Andres says the time invested was worth it for the great experience, the knowledge earned and the friends he made. “I love submerging myself in other cultures and learning about the world,” he adds. Andres said the experience with MUN made him a better speaker and taught him how to problem-solve. It also taught him the importance of knowing your resources. While he had represented Germany, Venezuela and Spain at USF’s MUN, he and his team were assigned Burkina Faso when they went to New York. “Before you attend MUN, you have to do research to determine how your country would benefit from others and what you have to offer,” Andres explains. “Burkina Faso is a very poor country in Africa, but they do have multiple natural resources.” Even in their first year as a club, Andres helped his team win awards for Best Delegation and the Secretary General Award. He hopes to continue with MUN in the future. “I liked trying to resolve the conflicts and interests of the world,” he says.

hen Charles Hobby sees something wrong in the world, he wants to make it right.
While taking a tour of Robinson High School a few years back, he noticed the courtyard had become overgrown and ugly. When it came time to complete a service project for his Boy Scout Eagle Award, he started to think of ways he could improve the area. Four days, 350 plants, 200 people hours and 20 cubic yards of mulch later, the courtyard matched the school’s stellar reputation. “The outcome was very nice,” says Charles. “You hear that you can make a difference, but it is nice to see that it is true.” Charles began helping others when he was in second grade and would go with his mom to serve Meals on Wheels. “I get satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment from helping others,” he says. “It is something I enjoy.” An active Boy Scout for nine years, the high school sophomore now volunteers during the summer at Camp Woodruff in North Carolina, where he teaches younger scouts outdoor skills. “I like the leadership aspect of scouts,” he explains. Even one of his favorite hobbies has a sense of altruism to it. “I started building robots in middle school,” Charles says. “Our robotics team won at the state level and went on to the World Cup in Kentucky. The robotics club at Robinson just started, but I’m hoping I’ll be able to use my leadership skills from Boy Scouts to help it grow. I enjoy solving problems to help improve people’s lives, and I see robotics as a way to do that.”

Jennani Jayaram
L
ast year Jennani Jayaram battled the flu for two whole months. Jennani has juvenile idiopathic arthritis, a chronic illness that can turn her life upside down when it flares up. “I will have pain in most of my elbows, shoulders, fingers, toes, hips and knees — almost all of my joints,” she says. “The medicine I take to control it turns off my immune system, and I am very susceptible to other illnesses.” Despite her illness, Jennani has become a mathematical superstar and a violin virtuoso. She spent the summer at Brown University studying numbers theory — a branch of mathematics devoted to the study of whole numbers — and while she will be a senior at Plant High School this year, she will be taking Calculus 3 in the College of Engineering at USF. “My dad loves math,” she says. “It has always been a special connection between us and is one of my favorite things to do. He used to quiz me on my times tables on car trips.” And unlike most parents, Jennani’s dad didn’t stop at 10. He had her memorize them up to 20. Jennani would like to get more girls interested in math and science. Last year she volunteered at a chess camp and was disheartened to see so few girls in attendance, so she “took them under [her] wing and made them feel comfortable.” Music is also an integral part of her life. She has been playing violin for about 8 1/2 years. This past winter she was part of the Pinellas Youth Orchestra, where she played a violin solo. “Listening to music makes you more aware of detail,” she says. “For me, both music and math are important parts of my life. Both are very beautiful.”
