GROUP PUBLISHER’S LETTER

SHAWNA WIGGS Group Publisher

We’ve been publishing the Restaurant Issue of South Tampa Magazine for 11 years, and it tends to be the most popular edition with readers. This year we’re bringing it to TAMPA Downtown Magazine with a fresh new look. As your community digest magazine, we are big backers of supporting local businesses and hope the food featured on the following pages motivates you to try something new (or new-to-you). In the Channel District, Italian food favorite CENA recently reopened at Grand Central after a complete renovation. If you haven’t tried it yet, I highly recommend doing so. Still looking for something different? Our Menu Guide, starting on page 50, is sure to help you solve the age-old question, “What’s for dinner?” This July we’re launching the inaugural TAMPA Sandwich Hunt. Turn to page 26 for some of the restaurants competing, and visit tampamagazines.com to vote on your favorite sandwich. The results will be announced in our next issue. With one in eight people struggling with hunger in the U.S., the charities listed on page 24 are doing their part to provide assistance and relief to those in need. We partnered with the restaurants advertising in this issue to donate a portion of the proceeds back to the community, and we hope to inspire you to donate your time or money to these great causes. Bon appétit! shawna.wiggs@tampamagazines.com Coming up next is the Back to School and Football Edition of TAMPA Downtown Magazine. The issue is filled with deals for our readers, and advertisers who play along get a special pricing discount. Call (813) 600-4000 or email for details. 8   JULY/AUGUST 2018 tampamagazines.com

EDITOR’S LETTER

MCKENNA KELLEY Managing Editor

It’s true. I lack both the skills and the patience needed in the kitchen, so I depend heavily on local restaurants to pick up my slack in the dinner department. I’m always looking for new, or new to me, places to dine, so our annual Restaurant Issue is one I look forward to working on each year. Possibly because they can do what I can’t (and because they keep me from going hungry), I have an immense amount of respect for the work of Tampa’s chefs and restaurant owners. One of my favorite annual features is the Best Thing I Ever Ate (Not in My Restaurant), where a handful of food pros tell us what they dig into when they’re off the clock. That’s on page 34. One of my favorite ways to discover new restaurants is via Instagram, so we’re highlighting three local food bloggers whose feeds make us hungry day in and day out. Meet them on page 44. If you are reading this magazine, odds are you have a dog that you like to take out around town. To help you on your quest for pet-friendly dining, we put together a list of restaurants and bars around downtown, the Heights and Ybor that welcome furry friends on page 50. If you’re hungry for more local food content, keep it tuned to tampamagazines.com and @tampadowntown on Instagram for new features and photos every week. That’s where you’ll also find more details on the upcoming TAMPA Sandwich Hunt 2018. See page 26 for more info on that. As always, let me know what you’d like to see in these pages and on the web at mckenna.kelley@tampamagazines.com. Enjoy the issue! The team behind Yeoman’s Cask & Lion opened a new one-stop-shop for busy downtowners on Morgan Street in late April. CITY MARKET EATS is a local fresh market that mainly serves hot dogs, ice cream, coffee and other grab-andgo items. But it also offers anything you might find at a convenience store: gum, candy, chips, toiletries and even some retail items. The University of Tampa began construction on their RIVERSIDE CENTER in May. The major renovation is expected to be completed in the fall and will add nearly 20,000 square feet to the space. This will allow for significantly increased space for the Career Services department, classrooms and a new post office along the banks of the Hillsborough River.

WHAT’S NEW Downtown

SHOP FOR ORGANIC VINO AND GET CULTURED AT DOWNTOWN’S LECTOR SOCIAL CLUB. Branching off the widespread push toward natural foods, organic and biodynamic wines — which are made without chemicals from grapes grown according to the cycles of the moon — have taken off in major cities, landing in Downtown Tampa at Lector Social Club. The wine shop and art venue is named for the lectores in the early Ybor City cigar factories, who read the news, poetry and other literature to the cigar rollers. Lector sells a range of natural, biodynamic and organic wines that are curated and paired with books and poetry from their in-house lending library. “After recently moving back to Tampa from Brooklyn, where there are numerous places to experience both the written word and natural wine, I quickly recognized a gap to be filled and jumped at the opportunity,” says owner Micheal Hooker. The club also serves as a gathering space for lectures, classes, readings and other community events. Each month, Lector also hosts one local or visiting writer or visual artist in residence (including Laura Eliason, who painted the mural outside the shop seen above) to help bolster Tampa’s cultural exchange. WHAT’S NEW Ybor City

YBOR CITY’S ZYDECO BREW WERKS IS THE NEWEST ADDITION TO TAMPA’S CRAFT BEER SCENE. With the street’s huge volume of dining, drinking and entertainment options, comparisons between Ybor’s Seventh Avenue and New Orleans’ Bourbon Street are obvious and well covered. For Zydeco Brew Werks owners Paul Rutherford and J. Paul Pepin, it made perfect sense to bring the Big Easy to Tampa. “Zydeco is the music of the Cajun people,” Rutherford says. “It ties in with our Cajun-inspired kitchen and Ybor City’s similarities to New Orleans. Also, J. Paul really wanted to bring Cajun cuisine back to Ybor City since he was a big fan of Cafe Creole [on Ninth Avenue] and was sad to see them go many years ago.” At the bar, Zydeco has a variety of rotating beers and five signature selections (including lagers, a golden ale and an IPA) all created at the in-house brewery, as well as a selection of wines and craft cocktails. Bites skew traditionally Cajun and Creole, with dishes including gumbo, shrimp and grits, and muffaletta. “The building we’re in has been here since 1906,” Rutherford adds, “so people have been enjoying themselves here for a long time, and we are excited to continue that tradition.” WHAT TO KNOW: 1902 E. 7th Ave. | (813) 252-4541 | facebook.com/zydecobrewwerks 20   JULY/AUGUST 2018 tampamagazines.com

We also knew we wanted a building with character — no new construction. When a partner of ours came across our current building, we knew it would be our home. A: As I’m thinking about the answer to this question, all I can think about is running over to Sunday’s Delicatessen down the street in Ybor for a quick Hangover Hero: eggs, sausage, bacon, ham, home fries and American cheese on a hero roll. Q: Where do you take guests from out of town who are visiting Tampa? A: I usually do a tour around Tampa Bay to show the diversity in concepts: maybe dinner and drinks at one of the Ichicoros, a cocktail or two at Armature Works or the Hall on Franklin, a show at The Attic, then end it at Mandarin Hide in St. Pete.

Take It to Church

IN THE SHELL OF ONE OF THE CITY’S OLDEST CHURCHES, SANCTUARY LOFTS STANDS AS A TANGIBLE REMINDER OF TAMPA HEIGHTS’ LEGACY

In the mid-1990s, Atelier Architecture principal Vivian Salaga and partner John Tennison were on the hunt for their next project. What they found was the historic 45,000 square-foot former Tampa Heights Methodist Church on 28   JULY/AUGUST 2018 tampamagazines.com

the corner of Ross and Central avenues, which Atelier purchased in 1997 and began converting into the Sanctuary Lofts in 2002. “Everyone said, ‘How crazy are you?’” Salaga says with a laugh. “Apartments seemed like the only logical thing to do with the building. We wanted it to be an economic generator for the neighborhood.” For decades, the church had sat empty and partially fire damaged, a far distance from its heyday in the early 20th century. Built in 1910 by architect Frank Winn, the church hosted Tampa’s biggest names, including the Mabrys (now

Vivian Salaga and John Tennison, pictured above, sit on one of the church’s original pews, which dot the hallways through the Sanctuary Lofts; inside one of the apartments

known for Dale Mabry Highway), the Linebaughs (Linebaugh Avenue) and the Blakes, whose name still adorns the exterior of the building. During Atelier’s renovations, almost the entirety of the building’s interiors were rebuilt, but the stained glass windows, one grand staircase and the whole brick exterior were retained. “In those days the craftsmen were so wonderful that we didn’t have to do anything to the brick but clean it,” Salaga says. Despite Salaga and Tennison’s clear passion for reviving the historic neighborhood, not everyone was sold on Tampa Heights around the new millenium.

“Financing was the biggest challenge,” Tennison says. “We were turned down for five years.” Funds ultimately came through, and today, the 32 one- and two-story apartments (including four that make up the former sanctuary space, complete with hurricane-reinforced stained glass) have had few vacancies since construction finished in 2004. The units marry the old and the new, with restored 9-foot fan windows next to modern black and steel finishes. To identify historic architecture, newly constructed walls were painted in color while original walls were kept cream. Both Salaga and Tennison say they’re thrilled to see other developers and residents putting their faith in Tampa Heights. “[In Tampa Heights], people can live close to work and are able to walk their dogs on the sidewalk — the way people should have the opportunity to live,” Tennison says. “It’s a joy to see the beginning of rejuvenation,” Salaga adds. “People believe they could have economically viable businesses here, so it gives the younger generation hope they can do it too.” tampamagazines.com JULY/AUGUST 2018 29

Bakers, jewelers, farmers and artists make up the bulk of the offerings, and visitors are welcome to bring their pets (if they aren’t afraid of the Ybor chickens, that is).

Florida Ave. First Friday of the month tampabaymarkets.com 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Subtitled “Makers + Music + Libations,” this new sunset market — launching July 6 — will have all three in abundance. Offerings will focus on crafts from local artisans, and visitors can also enjoy grub and grog from Brew Bus Brewing and its new restaurant, The Eatery.

One of Tampa’s best kept secrets is out, judging by the packed parking lot at this market just outside of Ybor City every Sunday. Temple patrons whip up huge batches of noodle bowls, curries, egg rolls, fresh rolls, pad Thai, fried bananas and more, with most of it gone by late morning.

BEST THING Not In My Restaurant By Derek Herscovici

G I EVER ATE They are the savory elements that make up a day in the life: breakfast, lunch, dinner and, with luck, dessert. Inspired by the Food Networks’s “Best Thing I Ever Ate,” we asked chefs and restaurateurs from around Tampa’s urban core to define their own cuisines and tell us where they go to get out of the kitchen for each of these meals — because, at the end of the day, food still makes the world go round.

Power Sandwich — Petit Piquant

Lynn Pham Originally a network engineer for a major IT company, Lynn Pham opened Bamboozle Cafe 10 years ago on Tampa Street, followed by Bamboozle Tea Lounge in the Channel District. Chorizo Tacos — La Fiesta Mexican Store

Nathan Hardin Executive Chef, Steelbach

What is your favorite thing for lunch outside your own restaurant? The chorizo tacos from La Fiesta Mexican Store. I honestly don’t know if they make their own chorizo or what, but it doesn’t matter. The simplicity of 38   JULY/AUGUST 2018 tampamagazines.com

these tacos is what makes them so good. Charred corn tortillas, lime, white onion and that sensuous chorizo — that’s it. There are two salsas to choose from on the table, both amazing in their own right, but I’m definitely a fan of the verde. Also get the chicharrones. These

Before becoming the executive chef at Armature Works’ first sit-down restaurant, Steelbach, Nathan Hardin served as the chef de cuisine at Highball and Harvest at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando Grande Lakes and has been featured at the James Beard House in New York. uber-crispy pork belly bites are unreal. It’s the perfect balance of crispy, salty, fatty, meaty deliciousness. Hit it with a squeeze of lime and some of the salsa verde, and you’re hooked. The kicker for the meal is the selection of Jarritos sodas. I had no idea there were so many flavors. How did you discover La Fiesta? I had to ask the question. Jay Wells, our beverage director [at Steelbach], insisted that I try La Fiesta, and he was spoton. This place is the epitome of a hidden gem. Fried Quail — Rooster & the Till

Cody Tiner

At just 24 years old, Cody Tiner is already a kitchen pro. Working in restaurants since he was 14, Tiner was named head chef of downtown hot spot CW’s Gin Joint. He recommends the popular grilled octopus, which he says is simply quality ingredients married with good cooking. What’s your favorite thing for dinner outside of your restaurant? I’ve been going to Rooster & the Till since it opened. They change the menu so much, but right now my favorite is 40   JULY/AUGUST 2018 tampamagazines.com

How did you get into cooking? My mom worked a lot growing up, and a lot of times we’d either eat out or eat leftovers. I got home before my mom did and started experimenting with whatever was in the pantry. Sometimes it worked and she was really happy. Other times, she was like, “We’re going to order a pizza.” I don’t cook for myself. I cook for other people.

PLAYING WITH THEIR FOOD THE FACES BEHIND THREE LOCAL FOODIE INSTAGR AM ACCOUNTS SHARE THEIR TRICKS OF THE TR ADE FOR FINDING DELICIOUS BITES

— Kiera Andrews

YOU USED TO RUN ONE OF THE ORIGINAL TAMPA FOODIE INSTAGRAM ACCOUNTS, TAMPA BAY EATS OUT. WHY DID YOU MAKE THE SWITCH OVER TO THIS BABE EATS? I really wanted to be able to share food from everywhere that I go. Whenever I go to a new city I always make sure I try out the best foodie spots, and I wanted to be able to share that with my followers, not just the meals I have in Tampa Bay. 46   JULY/AUGUST 2018 tampamagazines.com

WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS FOR DISCOVERING FOOD OR RESTAURANTS AND BLOGGING? Instagram is my biggest resource for finding foodie spots. Whenever I’m traveling to a new city I will search the foodie hashtags in that city to see what everyone is eating and start my list. WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT OR CHALLENGING PART OF FOOD BLOGGING? When I first started Tampa Bay Eats Out, I wouldn’t really say there was anything difficult about it. I started the account because I loved food, and

P HOTO: K IERA ANDREWS

@ThisBabeEats

HOW DID YOU GET INTO FOOD BLOGGING? After I graduated college, I was in a full-time job that I didn’t really enjoy, and I wanted to be able to do something that made me happy on my time off. Food, photography and writing all make me happy so I started the Tampa Bay Eats Out account.

TAMPA HAS SERIOUS INSTA-GAME. THERE ARE MORE THAN 35,000 POSTS ON INSTAGRAM WITH THE HASHTAG #TAMPAFOODIE.

I wanted to share that with everyone. It’s still really enjoyable for me to this day. The only thing that is difficult now is juggling invitations to events at restaurants. I do work full time, so I’m unable to attend events during the typical workweek, which seems to be when most restaurants like to hold previews. Another slight difficulty is going to restaurants with poor lighting. They could have the most amazing looking food, but if there isn’t a well-lit place to photograph, then it won’t turn out to be a great photo. I’m always so disappointed when the photos don’t do the food justice.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO EAT IN TAMPA? The first thing that comes to mind is the sweet potato gnocchi at Boca, but you can’t go wrong with whatever seafood special they have for the night. IN HONOR OF THE TAMPA SANDWICH HUNT 2018, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SANDWICH IN TAMPA, AND WHERE CAN YOU FIND IT? The Cheez It Grilled Cheese from the Empamamas food truck. I’m obsessed with anything cheesy, and this is the holy grail. tampamagazines.com JULY/AUGUST 2018 47

@CarlosEats — Carlos Hernandez HOW DID YOU GET INTO FOOD BLOGGING? I started off just writing reviews years ago on Yelp. I was one of their first users in the southeast back in 2006. In 2010 I saw a food blog in Orlando called Tasty Chomps and realized blogging would be a better use of my writing time.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO EAT IN TAMPA? Tampa’s history is based in Cuban and Italian cuisine. I do enjoy grabbing Cuban food from time to time, but being of a Hispanic background I tend to be a major snob with it. West Tampa Sandwich Shop has always been a favorite of mine, and it was one of the first places that I reviewed for my blog. Definitely try the BLT with a fried egg inside. They do it just right. IN HONOR OF THE TAMPA SANDWICH HUNT 2018, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SANDWICH IN TAMPA? My favorite sandwich in Tampa is, of course, a Cuban sandwich, and the Floridian is my favorite place to have one. 48   JULY/AUGUST 2018 tampamagazines.com

P HOTO : CA R LO S HE RN A N D E Z ; JE N N TH A I

WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS FOR DISCOVERING FOOD OR RESTAURANTS AND BLOGGING? I use word-of-mouth like everybody else. I listen to what people are saying. Over time you learn how to decipher which places are good and which are just paying for coverage or are [overly] hyped-up. I like to keep it simple and shoot with my iPhone.

@ThisJennGirl — Jenn Thai HOW DID YOU GET INTO FOOD BLOGGING? I was a nail-art blogger when I was in college, but after starting my career I quickly realized that adulting would not allow me to spend one to two hours painting my nails every day, so I re-branded my blog. I love to eat, and it just made sense for me to write about a topic that I engage in at least three times a day. HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR FOOD BLOGGING WITH YOUR DAY JOB? When you’re passionate about some-

thing, like I am with my personal blog, you always find time for it. While I’m on my lunch break, I may check out a new restaurant in St. Pete, where I work, or make dinner plans on the Tampa side. I always make sure I have my camera with me for those just-in-case moments. YOU SOMETIMES PARTNER WITH LOCAL RESTAURANTS FOR SPONSORED POSTS, WHICH IS A BIG STEP FOR BLOGGERS. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HOW THAT WORKS. I started securing sponsored food-related opportunities about a year-anda-half into cultivating This Jenn Girl after doing my fair share of organic blog posts and building up my portfolio of food-related content. It’s very important to me that the partnerships I choose are relevant not only to my personal brand but also to my audience. I keep an editorial calendar of sorts for my blog and social media platforms, which helps me balance organic content with sponsored content. IN HONOR OF THE TAMPA SANDWICH HUNT 2018, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SANDWICH IN TAMPA? I love the Beef Martini sandwich at Wright’s Gourmet House. It’s rare roast beef topped with juicy, marinated mushrooms, crispy slices of bacon and a yummy garlic herb spread. tampamagazines.com JULY/AUGUST 2018 49
