F E ATURE

NEW SCHOOL BAR FOODS When you sit down at a bar and peruse the menu, you know the drill: chips and dip, pretzels, maybe a salad or some flatbreads. You haven’t been to a bar in Downtown Tampa. Watering holes around the city are breaking the drink first, eat second mentality by taking unique approaches to traditional favorites or completely reinventing the concept of bar food. Here are a few of the most interesting eats you can find downtown. WRITTEN BY McKenna Kelley | PHOTOGRAPHY Gabriel Burgos

AVOCADO & FAVA BEAN BRUSCHETTA

Millennials’ favorite snack has made its way on to bar menus. Hotel Bar gives it a unique twist by layering smashed avocado, fava beans and basil over goat cheese spread atop toasted sourdough from Jamison B. Breadhouse Bakes, an artisan bakery based in Ybor City. The whole thing is topped with Calabrian chili oil. Balance the spice with one of Hotel Bar’s craft cocktails, all inspired by drinks made famous at hotels from around the world. Hotel Bar | 200 N. TAVERN SHOOTERS

This is probably not what you think of when you see the word “shooter” on a bar menu. Allie Dougherty and the team at District Tavern turned the soup-and-sandwich concept on its head by serving their roasted tomato bisque in shot glasses. Skewered on top is an upgraded grilled cheese sandwich — smoked gouda, brie, pancetta, arugula and caramelized onions on a toasted baguette, cut into quarters just like when you were a kid. THAI BARBECUE SALMON

Fly Bar’s menu is full of unusual menu items that reflect the establishment’s hip but unpretentious vibe. One of Fly Bar’s better-for-you options, the Thai Barbecue Salmon, is served over grilled pineapple fried rice. Pair it with the Bergamot Fizz, made with Ford’s gin, bergamot, lime, vanilla and almond, for a refreshing late-summer dinner. Fly Bar & Restaurant | 1202 N. Bacon — good. Roasted spicy peppers — good. Combine the two, and you have one flavor-packed bar snack. Taps wraps bacon around roasted jalapeño peppers and puts it all together with cream cheese and sriracha aioli. We can’t promise you’ll ever be able to eat plain old jalapeño poppers ever again. ART

Painting with A Message WRITTEN BY Oriana Caffo | PHOTOGRAPHY Gabriel Burgos

T

he artists of Traditional and Digital Arts, also known as Tada!, create art with a twist. The vision for the work is to incorporate the influences of fine art painting, computer design and digital reproduction. Each piece of art is created with the specific client in mind; the client’s every desire is taken into consideration. This concept of originality is seen in one of the newest Tada! murals, located in the Channel District. “Be Your Own Spotlight” was created by Meaghan Farrell Scalise, a Tada! artist. Located on the side of the artists’ building at 108 N. 11th St., Scalise created a mural filled with beautiful hues of blues and purples that stand out

against the area’s industrial buildings and apartment homes. However, the real star of the artwork is the little dog at the bottom right corner, seen howling and casting a large shadow of a wolf in the moonlight. The inspiring words, “be your own spotlight,” are centered inside the wolf to create a powerful message. Scalise says that the purpose of this mural is to “get people to look inwards and consider their own courage and determination.”

e dodged the drought-ending summer rains to enjoy prime fishing season on the waters near Downtown Tampa.

On this trip, attorney Derek Alvarez of GendersAlvarez-Diecidue, P.A. and his son Cameron spent a beautiful Friday morning reeling in Spanish mackerel and mangrove snapper. All together, the duo caught seven snapper and four mackerel. Alvarez praised Captain Oliver and his first mate, Captain Andrew, and said the “cook ‘em” part of the experience was just as excellent. Captains Oliver and Andrew brought the Alvarezes’ fresh catch to Spain Restaurant and Toma Bar, where Chef Maria Castro prepared a dish especially for them. To learn how to book your own hook ‘em and cook ‘em trip, see the next page.

EXERCISE

Fit for a Viking Reinvent your workout with the crew at Viking Fitness

Bradford Stevens leads a class through one of Viking Fitness’ five classes

B

radford Stevens repeats one word a number of times when he talks about Viking Fitness — wellness. With that idea in mind, he founded the fitness studio in June 2016 with a focus on group boot camp-style workouts. “It started with a desire to provide Tampa with a unique, wellness-focused studio that was more than just a place to work out,” Stevens says. “It’s a community — or as we call ourselves, a crew — of likeminded, wellness-focused, awesome people.” Located beside the port in the Channel District, Viking Fitness offers five different classes for all fitness levels. Stevens says the classes’ timed circuits keep workouts effective. “My focus during my master’s degree was corrective movement and injury prevention, so we do a lot to make

sure our guests are making their bodies stronger without causing any injury,” he explains. “We keep class sizes small and hire the smartest trainers in town.” Stevens, a New York native, says he thrives in urban areas and is happy to be a part of the Channel District’s growth. As part of Viking Fitness’ focus on community, they frequently donate part of the proceeds from designated classes to organizations like the Humane Society and Voices for Children. Stevens says these fundraisers help busy professionals who may not have time to give back any other way make a positive impact on the community. VIKING FITNESS

PEOPLE

Michael Conder Vice President, U.S. Trust, Bank of America Wealth Management

Years in Tampa: 2 ½ years Favorite place for a guys’ night out: Amalie Arena for a Lightning game, with a stop at Hattricks before and after. Favorite date-night downtown: Anise Global Gastrobar. It’s right next to the Tampa Riverwalk and has great views of the University of Tampa’s campus, Curtis Hixon Park and the downtown skyline. Favorite meal downtown: The fresh grouper at Ulele. It’s great to bike or walk along the Riverwalk down there, day or night. Favorite downtown happy hour: I actually have good friends opening up a new restaurant on the water next door to the Westin Harbour Island called American Social Bar & Kitchen. It’s not open yet, but there’s a lot of buzz around it being a go-to

for Tampa professionals during the week, weekends and especially on game days. It is opening in late August. Favorite downtown places to take guests from out of town: I take them to Fly Bar, then Franklin Manor for another stop of live music. If we end up at The Hub, it wasn’t my idea, but I also probably didn’t say no. Favorite downtown hidden gem: The Marriott Waterside rooftop pool or the Tampa Club – both have some unique downtown views. What does downtown need?: Trolley cars that connect SoHo, Hyde Park, Downtown, Channelside, Tampa Heights and Ybor would be great for the city of Tampa. Sept + Oct 2017 | TAMPA DOWNTOWN 15
