With multiple festivals and new attractions, Downtown is becoming not only a destination, but a home. The revitalization of Downtown hasn’t happened overnight, but its momentum is steadily building. HYDE PARK

(1819-1899)

TAMPA ICONS: HENRY B. PLANT

TAMPA’S HISTORICAL HYDE PARK NEIGHBORHOOD dates back to the 1880s when railroad financier Henry B. Plant built the first bridge across the Hillsborough River at Lafayette Street, which is now known as John F. Kennedy Boulevard.

In this ONGOING SERIES, we’ll examine the lives of several Tampa icons that have helped shape the city into what it is today. In this issue, we’re highlighting the life of Henry B. Plant, the man who brought the railroad to Tampa and is responsible for this city’s growth in its earliest stages.

B

Y THE TIME HE WAS SEVEN, Henry B. Plant had already lost his father and little sister to Typhus and seen them lowered into a Connecticut cemetery. In the decades before the Civil War and the ignition of the Industrial Revolution, Plant was given a choice: take his grandmother up on Yale seminary or find his own way. He chose a steamboat. He worked as the captain’s boy on The New York, which carried passengers and mail between New Haven, Conn., and New York City. He then came ashore, after meeting and marrying his wife, Ellen Blackstone, in 1843. He joined Adams Express Co. and handled their express package business. Plant’s fortunes grew when he became chief of Adams Express’ New York office. When the Civil War became imminent, Adams Express feared for the disruption of Southern rail and depots, where it did significant business. Plant and other southern investors bought the properties for $500,000 and renamed it the Southern Express Co. before Confederate President Jefferson Davis made the company the agent for collecting the Confederate State of America’s tariffs. After the Civil War, Plant returned to the South’s decimated railroads. He pulled from his stockpile of cash to buy Atlantic & Gulf Railroad and several other lines at foreclosure. He put together 2,100 miles of track, steamships and a number of southern hotels. He and other

The first house in the neighborhood was built by James Watrous in 1882 at 1307 W. Morrison Avenue, and growth occurred rapidly as the street car line was put in on Swann Avenue and Rome Avenue. This is the reason for the wideness of those two streets, while most in the neighborhood are much narrower.

rich industrialists, including Henry Flagler, put together the Plant Investment Company and created steamship and rail service to North Florida orange growers and other farmers. Plant knew about a little village named Tampa on Florida’s west coast with an accessible water harbor. Tampa had several hundred residents in 1885 when Plant decided to make it the southern terminus to his railroad system. To house his passengers and other wealthy winter tourists, Plant invested $3 million and broke ground on 150 acres to build the fabulous Tampa Bay Hotel, which opened in 1891. In 1898, this hotel gained international fame as the military headquarters during the Spanish American War. Another large, Victorian-style hotel established by Plant during the 1890s was the Belleview Biltmore in Clearwater.

The section that is now Hyde Park was uncharted wilderness with cattle paths winding through woods and palmettos. Many of the homes built after 1882 still stand today and included Victorian, Colonial and Georgian styles. This includes the Thomas Carson Taliaferro House, a two-story Georgian Revival at 305 Hyde Park Avenue. The area where Old Hyde Park Village is today was originally called Cork Avenue and Dakota Avenue. However, the only portion left of Cork Avenue today is called Snow Avenue, which is in the heart of Hyde Park’s shopping district.

Plant built an empire that transformed landscapes, altered waterways and turned small towns into lively cities. A two-story Georgian Revival, designed by through shipping St. Louis architects Grable, Weber, & Groves for the founder of the First National Bank. and now air travel, is his gift to the west coast of Florida. His energy, which kept him productive into his 80th year, made Tampa Bay an important link to Latin America and the rest of the world.

TOP HUBS

for Bicyclists

RANKED BY USAGE

CURTIS HIXON PARK HUB - 31 bikes

Since there are a handful of hubs in the park’s vicinity, this is easily the most-used hub. It helps that the park is centrally located on the frequently visited Tampa Riverwalk.

RIDING IN A BIKE LANE Don’t ride too close to parked cars. Make sure to move to your left and out of the lane before going straight or turning left at an intersection.

S. FRANKLIN ST. AND OLD WATERS ST. HUB - 15 bikes

This hub is located in front of the Tampa Convention Center and South Harbour Island Boulevard Bridge. It allows bikers to stop at The Sail Pavilion waterfront bar

RIDING IN A NARROW LANE

If cars are coming from both directions, take control of the situation. Stay in the middle as much as possible, especially on blind curve.

W. SWANN AVE. AND S. ROME AVE. HUB - 17 bikes

Coasting Around Downtown

Tampa’s Coast Bike Share program is an immediate success in its first year of existence.

E. CUMBERLAND AVE. AND S. 11TH ST. HUB - 16 bikes

This hub is located in the Channel District and used to get to the residential complexes. It sits in front of the luxury apartments development, Pierhouse at Channelside.

E. WHITING ST. AND RIVERWALK HUB - 10 bikes

This hub is located at MacDill Park on the Hillsborough River. This is another popular Tampa Riverwalk access point, which is also nearby local watering hole and Tampa Bay Lightning watch party spot, Hattricks Tavern.

PROGRAM DIRECTOR ERIC TRULL KNOWS THE COAST Bike Share program is ahead of the race. After a year of high usage, it’s become a popular way to get around downtown Tampa, South Tampa and Ybor City. Now, the program is ready to shift in to high gear with the arrival of new developments by Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik and many others. “I’m not sure if it’s better to call yourself the chicken or the egg, but a lot of new infrastructure is coming, and (bike sharing) will already be there. People now want access to downtown from the surrounding residential areas.”

THE FIRST YEAR OF OPERATIONS for Coast Bike Share proved to be a welcome alternative public transportation-option for our city. As of December, Coast Bike Share had 14,971 active members that made 45,858 trips totaling 29,708 miles. Trull says bike usage is split in half between locals and tourists. “People are amazed at how easy it is to use the system, to get from Point A

I’m not sure if it’s better to call yourself the chicken or the egg, but the infrastructure is coming, and (bike sharing) will already be there.

Thanks to the Hyde Park Village, this hub is a popular destination for an afternoon of shopping, lunch or catching a flick at CineBistro.

to Point B, make stops and find a bike hub.” The bikes are available for use 24/7 and the Ultimate Freedom (pay as you go plan) is $8 per hour. According to Coast Bike statistics, an average weekday ride is 40 minutes, while it rises to 50 minutes on the weekend. “We see a real uptick (in usage) around 10a.m. on weekdays,” Trull says. “People jump on the bikes for coffee or lunch.”

RIDING THROUGH A ROUNDABOUT

All traffic turns right, but bikers should be cautious of drivers not familiar with roundabouts. If you’re going past the first exit, move to the inside of the roundabout.

RIDING IN THE RAIN AND NIGHT

Don’t ride without a rear reflector, pedal reflectors or reflective ankle bands.

RIDING ON ONE-WAY STREETS

Bikers are allowed to ride on either side. When turning left from a one-way street onto another oneway street, it’s safest to take the corner on the left.

RIDING SIDE BY SIDE

This is legal in most places, but be courteous on narrower roads. Don’t make drivers wait for you—pull into a single line well before the car arrives.

STREETS

5 Most Expensive Streets in Tampa Bay

The Great Recession caused Florida real estate to suffer some of the worst drops in value in the country. It has been a long haul back for the average homeowner, but the more expensive locales rebounded more quickly. Zillow creates “The Most Expensive Streets in America” list. Here’s the Tampa Bay area’s top five.

Oceanview Drive Tierra Verde

5 MANDALAY POINT RD. CLEARWATER BEACH

Mandalay Point Road is an exclusive gated road on the northern tip of Clearwater Beach. The streets in Palma Ceia are named after streets in the old section of Havana, Cuba.

n the heart of South Tampa, Parkland Estates, Golf View, and Palma Ceia have everything you could want in a neighborhood – beautiful and distinctive homes with lushly landscaped lawns, access to unique shops and restaurants, proximity to downtown, and a worldclass country club and golf course.

Association Fees? No

The beautiful homes and opulent landscaping that line the quaint red brick streets of these neighborhoods are just two more reasons why these South Tampa neighborhoods are so beloved by their residents. “Palma Ceia is a great neighborhood for many reasons,” says resident Darla Smoak. “I love how family orientated and safe I feel living here. There are always kids playing outside and neighbors walking their dogs or exercising. But I love the convenience mostly - that I can hop on the Crosstown to easily connect to I-4 and I am close to the Gandy Bridge for a quick trip to downtown St. Pete. I can get to downtown Tampa in 5 minutes or the airport in 15. I don’t have to go outside of a 2 mile radius for coffee, groceries, a good restaurant to eat at, or to take my daughter to school.”

Add dazzling gulf views, vibrant tropical foliage, expansive lawns, magnificent homes, and friendly people to this prestigious enclave and you may think you’ve entered a modern day tropical Mayberry. “We love the wide streets on Davis Islands and how easy it is to walk around,” say residents Richard and Melissa Renninger. “People wave at you and neighbors really look out for each other.” Davis Islands residents come together throughout the year for holiday parties and Gasparilla gatherings often while developing old fashioned traditions and values. “Each year Davis Islands has a toy drive. There are block parties and Santa comes to each home to collect toys from the children. It is great to see them giving back.” 26 FEB MAR 2016

Grand Central at Kennedy

THE PAST 10 YEARS, AND WHAT’S AHEAD

TAMPA Magazine asked one of The Channel District’s residential development pioneers to tell us where we’ve been and his idea of what’s around the corner.

Ken Stoltenberg, Director Mercury Advisers, Grand Central at Kennedy Developer

U

rban development in the Downtown Tampa footprint has played out in fits and starts for the past decade. Back in 2005 there was a rush to build condos. We were part of that with our development, Grand Central at Kennedy (GCAK).

not investors, but those ready to embrace a truly urban lifestyle.

Ken Stoltenberg

The problem at that time was most of the folks buying the condos were investors looking to flip their units to another buyer. The investors were definitely not looking to live in their units. After we completed construction of the 392 units at GCAK only about 40 were actually owner occupied. Since then, folks wanting a walkable urban neighborhood have been faced with a “chicken or egg” problem. While all of the pieces were ready to be put into place, several elements (most notably retail and service business) had been slow to embrace locations Downtown. That is changing now, and changing fast. When the new Publix in the Channel Club opens next year all the elements of walkability will be in place. The folks now contemplating living Downtown are

The other element that was missing was a major new employment center. The recently green-lighted USF medical campus starts that transformation. I think what you will see in the coming years is increased retail, service, and employment possibilities on a scale unimaginable a decade ago. If you look at all the retail space available in the Channel District, it is now rapidly filling up. That was not the case even three years ago. Harbour Island will be totally built out and that is a demographic attractive to many types of business. Some have warned of a potential oversupply of residential rental projects, but I don’t see it like that. We had nearly a decade of no development and are just now catching up. The other thing that I think you will see is certain rental complexes converting to condominiums, as folks who currently rent will want to “own” a piece of downtown. Mayor Buckhorn has done a great job with urban public sector amenities, so now everything seems to be falling into place. I can’t say what Downtown will look like 10-20 years from now, but I can’t wait to see the outcome. TAMPA MAGAZINE 35

HYDE PARK

Word on the Street

This 1916 Dutch Colonial style home on Bayshore Boulevard in Hyde Park has been owned by famous Tampa sports figures, including former Tampa Bay Bucs General Manager, Rich McKay, and former Tampa Bay Rays manager, Joe Maddon.

Hyde Park resident Dale Acosta wrote, “Celebrating the Bungalow,” a book about Hyde Park’s history. Hyde Park Village hosts fun events every month including a fresh market. People come from all over Tampa to attend their annual tree lighting ceremony. The Watrous House at 1307 Morrison Avenue was built in 1882 and is one of the oldest houses in Hyde Park. It was originally surrounded by elaborate gardens. Residents can join the Historic Hyde Park or Old Hyde Park Associations.

ENTRALLY LOCATED IN SOUTH TAMPA WITH Bayshore Boulevard as one of its boundaries, Hyde Park was Tampa’s first neighborhood. Combining the best of the new with the old, Hyde Park homes have retained their original architectural features and residents work hard to preserve the historic charm and timeless sense of community of their neighborhood.

“I’ve lived in 13 different places and have never had the sense of community that we’ve found in Hyde Park,” says resident Mary Lou Bailey. “When we felt like we were outgrowing our home, I told my husband that we would either have to find another home in Hyde Park or figure out how to live with the space we had because I was not leaving Hyde Park.”

Many homes in Hyde Park were built 80 to 100 years ago and Hyde Park is so well known for its beautiful, historic homes that they invite people to tour them twice a year and have associations to help preserve the neighborhood. You’ll find gorgeous Victorian homes here as well as impressive Spanish architecture, but the most typical style of home in Hyde Park is the American bungalow.

DINING Hyde Park residents say they have so many dining options that it is hard to pick a favorite. CULTURE Because of its central location, it is easy for Hyde Park residents to attend a play or concert at any venue in the city. Closer to home, residents gather at Hugo’s Spanish Restaurant every Friday morning for “Café con Tampa” – an open forum where they can talk to cultural leaders, elected officials, and business trailblazers about the future of the city. Hugo’s Spanish Restaurant is located on nearby Howard Avenue. 38 FEB MAR 2016

Anderson Park, located in the middle of the neighborhood, is home to a playground, a spray park, and the Kate Jackson Community Center, which offers classes and programs for children. “The park is in the heart of the neighborhood,” says Bailey. “Neighbors meet there for picnics and the kids love playing in the spray park and on the playground.” The newly renovated Swann Pond has also become a gathering spot for families and friends.

The American bungalow is the most popular style of home in Hyde Park.

SCHOOLS Hyde Park children are zoned for Gorrie and Mitchell Elementary Schools, Wilson Middle School, and Plant High School – all A-rated, highly regarded public schools. BALLAST POINT

Word on the Street Many homes in Ballast Point include grand stairways, like above. Pictured is a Spanish/ Mediterranean-style with Italian Renaissance ideas of symmetry and center grand stair.

N

Ballast Point Park was originally named Jules Verne Park after developer Emelia Chapin’s favorite author.

ESTLED ON HILLSBOROUGH BAY WITH EASY access to Bayshore Boulevard, Ballast Point residents say their neighborhood is old Florida living at its best. With towering trees providing shade and beauty, an equestrian center located in the middle of the neighborhood, and amazing views of Hillsborough Bay and Downtown Tampa, it is easy to see why Ballast Point residents love their neighborhood. “The neighborhood is very quiet and peaceful,” says resident Jane Rothschild. “It is easy to have privacy but also very easy to meet neighbors when you are walking through the neighborhood or at one of the nearby local restaurants.”

46 FEB MAR 2016

The Battle of Ballast Point took place on October 18, 1863. A Union raiding party landed at the current intersection of Gandy Boulevard and Bayshore Boulevard and marched up the Hillsborough River to what is now the Lowry Park Zoo.

ARCHITECTURE

Perrenial Farm, located at the Tampa Yacht & Country Club, is an equestrian center open to the public.

The Ballast Point neighborhood is also only steps away from the most amazing stretch of sidewalk in Tampa – the one along Bayshore Boulevard. “We love biking and walking on Bayshore,” says Rothschild.

DINING Ballast Point residents have a great selection of easy-to-walk-to restaurants including Cook’s (the head chef used to cook for England’s royal family), Kojak’s House of Ribs (a family owned favorite since 1978), and Chubby’s Super Subs and Pizza (home of the infamous “steak bomb”).

CULTURE

The very first clubhouse located on the current Tampa Yacht & Country Club site was built in 1905.

Ye Mystic Crewe gathers at the Yacht Club to assemble their pirate personas before parading through Ballast Point Park to board the José Gasparilla. Additionally, with MacDill Air Force Base bordering the neighborhood to the South, residents have an enviable view of the amazing, aerial showmanship of AirFest.

Ballast Point Children are zoned for Ballast Point Elementary, an A rated school, Madison Middle School, and state and nationally ranked Robinson High School which offers an International Baccalaureate program that many students from all over the city try to get in to. “Robinson High School is the gem of the Hillsborough County school system,” says Rothschild. “It feels like a small school. There is a wonderful sense of community and the program is nationally recognized. Not only do students excel there academically and athletically but they also take part in many community service programs.”

For more than three decades, Chubby’s has been a go-to pizza and sub joint for Ballast Point residents.

Children can climb, swing, and slide on the impressive playground or splash through the new interactive water feature at Ballast Point Park. THE GREAT CATCH BY TASTE OF BOSTON $

North Tampa

TRANG VIET CUISINE $

After relocating from Wesley Chapel over the summer, The Great Catch still features daily seafood and Boston bake specials. Owner George Illes dials ups seafood and dinner specials and gives customers who don’t live near the water what they are looking for: quality seafood. The Great Catch specializes in New England seafood — lobster rolls, Ipswich chowders, steamers and fried seafood. There is also a Zephyrhills location and both feature an outdoor patio and brunch on Sundays.

Though it’s located in a small strip mall, there’s nothing small about Trang Viet’s menu nor its large dining room. While it serves traditional Vietnamese cuisine, there are also plenty of imitation meat dishes for vegetarians. The restaurant also grows its own herbs and travels to the market daily for fresh meats, seafood and vegetables. There is a vegan buffet once a month and the kitchen also makes its desserts fresh daily. Give the Thai tea and steamed buns a try.

ISLAND WAY GRILL $$$ This upscale restaurant offers some Asian twists on seafood classics. It also includes a sushi bar, water views and a Sunday brunch. But at Island Way, they’re all about fresh fish. The restaurant’s boats make daily trips to the middle grounds to bring back fresh tuna, mahi mahi, snapper and other local varieties. There’s no long-line fish here. As they say at Island grill: If it’s any fresher, it is still in the gulf. Recommendation: Salmon en Papillote made with Island Way’s signature sauce.  Try it: 20 Island Way, Clearwater, FL 33767 (727) 461-6617 // islandwaygrill.com

SALT N PEPPER BISTRO $$ This petite, but homey hideaway serves crepes and classic French dishes from onion soup to escargot. With just 12 tables, Salt N Pepper makes for the perfect date night at this family-owned and operated gem. The service comes with a personalized touch and the chef will visit your table after you’ve finished your meal. It also features an extensive wine selection despite the size of the restaurant. KOIZI $$

4RIVERS $

This Japanese restaurant is home of the endless hibachi and all-you-can eat sushi. But this isn’t your traditional buffet. The idea is endless sushi, hibachi and traditional Chinese dishes, ordered serially or in an ambitious flurry. That means no serving oneself, but fantastic table service. It also features a brunch on Sundays that has a “one price for anything” menu. There are locations in Brandon and Port Richey, but patrons should be prepared to wait, as it has become a popular dining spot.

This Florida-born chain is known for its savory brisket and excellent sandwiches but if you’re particularly hungry, go for an item on the Signature Stackers menu. It features monster meals like the Six Shooter: a mess of cheese grits, pulled pork, cole slaw, pickles, jalapeños, and 4Rivers signature sauce. Parking is difficult during lunch hour, but it’s worth the inconvenience. If you’re not stuffed full, a treat from the Sweet Shop, their in-house bakery, is sure to fill in the cracks.

While there are gourmet meat and cheese boards and additional tapas, it has become a popular night-life and date-night spot in downtown St. Petersburg. Best Place To Have Dinner On The Water: I recall the excellent meal — and fantastic view — I recently had at Ulele overlooking the Hillsborough River. Beautiful spot in downtown Tampa. Best Mexican Food: Please don’t make me choose! I could live off the salsa, guac, white cheese dip and tortilla chips at Chihuahua Mexican Grill. But the butternut squash taco at Taco Bus often calls my name. Best Chinese Food: When I’m in the mood for Chinese, I want it delivered stat. China Wok on S. MacDill never disappoints in bringing me my beloved garlic broccoli on time. Best Sunday Brunch: Love the variety at Pane Rustica. You can go simple and choose their flatbread pizza (yes, please) or a sandwich, while your companion dines from the specials menu (a la oak grilled pork tenderloin). For something fun surprise yourself with their “Shut up & eat, don’t ask” special. You won’t be disappointed.

Best Dive Bar: The New World Brewery has never failed in satisfying me. Always good service and great beers.

Best Dive Bar: The Hub in downtown Tampa. Also winner of Best Jukebox. Favorite Beach: There is no happier place for me than the beach and the powdery white sand on Siesta Key. I got married in Sarasota, just to have my reception there. Best Place To Watch Bucs: We have a pirate ship and cannons at RayJay. Need I say more? Boom! Place You Like To Take Friends From Out Of Town: The Columbia in Ybor City. Their 1905 salad and sangria (made right at your table) are a must and you can brag to friends they’re eating at the oldest restaurant in Florida. (Richard Gonzmart’s newest restaurant, Ulele, is a close second.) Best Burger: I don’t eat beef but my youngest loves cheeseburgers, go figure. We both agree on Square One Burgers. Their Very Vegan Veggie Burger is very, very yummy.
