ou have the power to make 2016 the year you turn your life around for good. Day in and day out, Dr. Kenneth Pages helps people who are living with depression despite years of therapy and antidepressants. They turn to him because Dr. Pages is renowned for his specialization in NeuroStar Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy (TMS), the most aggressive, noninvasive way to treat major depressive disorder. TMS is a groundbreaking treatment that uses magnetic fields to stimulate specially targeted areas of the patient’s brain. His results are astounding, with 60 percent of patients experiencing positive results and 40 percent achieving complete remission from depression. “When my patients first come here, they feel helpless, hopeless and lost,” says Dr. Pages. “Those who experience positive results with TMS have a renewed sense of hope and can picture a brighter future.”

HISTORY
TAMPA ICONS:
In this ongoing series, we’ll examine the lives of Tampa icons who helped shape the city into what it is today. In this issue, we’re highlighting two PROMINENT ATTORNEYS who changed the geographic and racial landscape of Tampa. You can find their bronze and marble busts along the Tampa Riverwalk’s Historic Monument Trail.
HUGH CAMPBELL MACFARLANE (1851-1935)
H
ugh Campbell Macfarlane moved to Tampa at a time of great growth for the city - phosphate had been discovered, railroads, hotels, and factories were being built, and cigars rolled in Tampa were in high demand. Macfarlane began practicing law immediately after moving to his new hometown and was soon considered the top criminal lawyer in the state. Macfarlane wanted to see the area grow and prosper and was one of the founding members of the Chamber of Commerce. In 1893 the Scottish emigrant purchased 120 acres of swampland on the banks of the Hillsborough River across from downtown Tampa. Macfarlane developed the new area, known as West Tampa, by offering free land and buildings to cigar manufacturers and helping finance the construction of a bridge across the Hillsborough River. By 1900 West Tampa was one of the largest cities in Florida. Macfarlane, who stayed very connected to the Scottish community, was also instrumental in elevating literacy in Tampa. He persuaded Andrew Carnegie to donate funds to build the first free public library in West Tampa on Howard Avenue as well as Tampa’s first library.
CODY FOWLER (1892-1978)
A
t a time when other cities were plagued with tension and violence, Cody Fowler helped navigate racial issues in Tampa and played a vital role in the city’s successful, nonviolent racial integration during the 1960s. Fowler, who was considered a true southern gentleman, never hesitated to speak out about unfair injustices and was noted for his willingness to defend African Americans at a time when other white lawyers would not. He was chair of the Tampa Bi-Racial Commission and mediated a plan to desegregate lunch counters all at the same time so that angry whites could not protest against individual business owners who had stood up for equal rights. He was also the president of the American Bar Association and one of the founding members of Fowler, White, Boggs, and Banker.
This Mediterranean Revival style home was built for Fowler in 1922. Located at 313 Sleepy Hollow Avenue. It is one of the original homes built for the developers of Temple Terrace.

Temple Terrace was the first planned golf community in the U.S. and Cody Fowler and his mother, Maud, were instrumental in the development of the city in the 1920s. The Fowlers, along with other developers, envisioned a community where wealthy retirees would spend the winter season playing golf and enjoying a little gardening in the adjacent citrus groves. Cody Fowler drafted the city’s charter, served as the city’s first attorney, and served a term as mayor.

“Stay Curious” mural, Poe Parking Garage By Bask and Tes One
Public art is slowly but surely becoming part of the downtown Tampa landscape. Here are three local artists who are making their mark.
TAMPA MAGAZINE 13
The Artist:
Bianca Burrows Mixed-Media POP Artist & Art Director for Ciccio Restaurant Group HOW SHE GOT HOOKED The native New Yorker first became enamored with street art on the streets of Brooklyn, but a visit to Venice Beach, Calif., cemented her interest in the medium. Claims to Fame Bianca may be best known for the Biggie Buddha that has popped up in numerous places and decorated the side of Buddy Brew for a while. That and the Arnold Schwarzenegger on the side of Fresh Kitchen.
Her Unique Technique Buildings may be Bianca’s canvas of choice, but despite what onlookers may think, she’s not defacing buildings. Instead, she creates her art in studio on paper and uses wheat paste to adhere it to the side of buildings. “I like to consider it ecofriendly graffiti,” she says. “It doesn’t do any harm to the wall and it peels off like it was never there.”

Upcoming Projects As art director for Ciccio Restaurant Group, she’s been working on murals for all of the properties. She’s also doing custom work for people’s homes. The Local Scene “I think Tampa is booming,” she said. “I can see it evolving. There are so many people coming from everywhere and so much culture coming in.” Hashtag #bbart

The Artist:
Ales “BASK” Hostomsky Mixed-Media Urban Visual Artist HOW HE GOT HOOKED As a high school student in the early to mid ‘90s, a heavy interest in comic books shifted to art in the streets. “I can’t say how or why,” says Bask, “but I do know it felt deeply instinctive, in a primal way.” Claims to Fame Bask’s work was famously featured in Iron Man 3. Locally he may be known best for his commissioned collaboration with Tes One on the now-famous Poe Parking Garage mural “Stay Curious.” “Tes One and I were asked to collaborate on a theme that would bring attention to the attractions in the surrounding Riverwalk area.”
Ducky’s Sports Lounge on Kennedy Blvd.
Ales “Bask” Hostomsky
Breaking it Down Street art and graffiti are exclusive terms for art done illegally on a city’s lining. The legal versions of both are simply called murals, installations or public art.
The Local Landscape “I think with murals going up on both sides of the bridge, people are becoming more open-minded to the idea of more public art. Well-executed public art murals are a huge asset on a number of different levels to a neighborhood. I’m glad to see this area investing in its local art stable to facilitate that.” Upcoming Projects In addition to preparing for a few in- and out-of-state exhibitions, Bask is currently finishing a series of massive indoor murals for Power Design Inc. He’s also working with Ducky’s again and doing some original work for their airport location inspired by the mural on Kennedy Boulevard. Tools of the Trade “The tools I use to work with on any given project are unconventional to say the least. And, it’s only getting stranger with each passing project. I find myself digging through construction site dumpsters for art supplies far more often than I find myself at an art supply store.” Learn More baskinyourthoughtcrimes.com
BUSINESS SNAPSHOT Pep Rally Inc. is a collaborative agency specializing in brand development and brand strategy. “We are a premium content creator,” they said. “That content can be a mural, a photoshoot, or maybe custom uniforms.” Claims to Fame You’ve seen their commissioned murals in Seminole Heights, Crowbar in Ybor City and you’ve likely seen their work on the side of Soho Cycling Studio and The Hyde Out in Hyde Park. They recently did a huge mural in the lobby of 22 Squared and partnered with the Tampa Bay Lightning to do a live painting.
Philosophy “We very much appreciate architecture and our city, so we want to do things that add to the city and add character. Public street art is a way to add character to a city and add identity to a city. We love being involved in that type of project.”
The Hyde Out, W. Platt Street in Hyde Park

Upcoming Projects Though they can’t disclose their upcoming projects, they’re in talks with some major organizations to bring more public art to downtown Tampa. “We’re approached at least weekly for new murals. We’re starting to see the tip of the iceberg.”

Raymond James presented the 5th Annual DreamMaker Luncheon on Friday, March 4, at the Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel. The event is held to celebrate Children’s Dream Fund’s mission of making dreams come true for children with life-threatening illnesses and to present the DreamMaker Award to an individual or group that has demonstrated a commitment to making a difference in the lives of these children. This year’s honoree was the 13 Ugly Men Foundation. The group has supported the Children’s Dream Fund since 2007 and has donated more than $70,000 to them. Sunglasses were passed out to guests to tie in with the Timbuk3 song, “The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades.”

Tampa Bay’s local waterways offer its residents a variety of ways to stay fit. Kayaking. Standup paddle boarding. Even water bikes. Every so often, you might see rowers making their way along the Hillsborough River near the University of Tampa, oars sweeping in perfect unison. You might think you need to be enrolled at one of the nation’s most prestigious universities or a local high school to take up the sport of rowing. But Tampa Athletic Club, a local master’s rowing group founded in 2011, offers seasoned rowers and newcomers alike the opportunity to get their feet — or their oars — wet. Kathy Fountain, the club’s membership chairman, says it all began when a group of local parents whose kids rowed in high school were “left adrift” on Saturday mornings once the kids graduated.

“We got a coach and started learning to do it ourselves,” says Kathy. Eventually, they formed an official club, began recruiting members and started competing in local races. They’re now up to about 45 members ranging in age from 19 to 90. Some club members are die-hard rowers who don’t miss a practice, while others come more sporadically for fun or to supplement their existing workout routine with a lowimpact, full-body cardio workout. They hold practices seven days a week and Learn to Row clinics every couple of months. These weekend clinics are designed to teach newbies to row in a single weekend. “It looks intimidating,” says Kathy, who had never rowed before joining the club, “But once you come out and see our programs, you’ll see anyone can do it.”

Red Carpet Preview for Trial By Fire
In January, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) patients and their families attended a red carpet preview of the documentary Trial By Fire, which follows the stories of several CRPS patients including Constance Marley, sister of the late Bob Marley. Film Director Charles Mattocks, Florida Spine Institute’s Dr. Ashraf Hanna, the Founder of CRPS Partners in Pain Nancy Cotterman, and RSDSA.com’s Director Jim Broach also attended the red carpet event. The documentary features Dr. Hanna, who has successfully helped CRPS patients with IV Ketamine Infusion therapy. Dr. Hanna said, “CRPS is a devastating disease and one of the most painful of conditions. The pain is complex and the patient has a lot of hypersensitivity - even touching bed sheets can result in excruciating pain.” Prior to the main feature, a short preview movie was shown featuring patients who had very successful treatments with IV Ketamine therapy. “While IV Ketamine is not a cure for CRPS, it offers green lights where there was no hope,” Dr. Hanna said. “Our goal is not only to reduce pain and increase function, but to offer hope to patients who may have already begun to contemplate suicide.”

“With respect to lunch restaurants, I confess that I am a creature of habit and prefer to walk downtown rather than drive. I go two blocks and eat chicken and rice on a plastic plate every day at The Grilling Station (think food court) while I read the Tampa Bay Times. When I do have a “professional” lunch with colleagues or expert witnesses or some other suit, I walk across the street to Malio’s. It’s always the Gorgonzola salad, lunch steak and a Blue Moon. Old-school. And at Malio’s, you have to sit on the bar side.” Publisher’s note: Jack says he’s been going to Malio’s for 20 years, and does not even look at the menu when he orders. The “lunch steak” is the 6 oz. filet.

“My favorite for lunch or dinner is Pane Rustica. It is locally owned and always crowded. It is a great place to take out of town clients because it is lively and you always run into people you know. I like to sit in the bar area now that they have extended it. Everything on the menu is good but my favorite is their chicken salad. Also, their espresso cookie is the best thing I’ve ever eaten. It is ridiculous how good it is. You have to get there early to get one.”
“I try to choose a restaurant based on what I think my client will like but I love everything about Ocean Prime. Without question, they have the best sea bass I’ve ever had. Their service is impeccable. It is an atmosphere where you can relax and get to know your client. Their pineapple infused vodka is a great drink. They soak pineapple in vodka for four to five days and you don’t taste the vodka at all.”

“Oxford Exchange is like no other restaurant in Tampa. I like to take clients or colleagues there because I love the décor and architecture. If I can get there early, I enjoy browsing the shops. They have great smelling candles and wonderful gifts. For lunch, I like to start with the Fried Brussels Sprouts and finish with the Grilled Chicken Paillard with sweet potato fries. The aioli for the chicken is incredible. Oxford Exchange is known for their teas and coffees and my favorite is the Blueberry Pomegranate Green Tea. The tea’s aroma is soothing and it is sweet enough that I don’t need to add any sugar. I like to sit in the atrium. It is bright, sunny, and relaxing. The roof is covered with windows and there is a water fountain in the middle with flowers and plants around the room. You feel like you are dining outside. It is a great break from the office.” TAMPA MAGAZINE 25
TOP LAWYERS
2016 annual Top LAWYERS Edition
WHO DECIDES WHO IS A TOP LAWYER? Who Picks the Lawyers? In February, we mailed over 11,000 surveys to attorneys in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties. The list of active attorneys was provided to us by The Florida Bar. If there was no clear winner in a particular practice area we did not include it in this list. We asked the lawyers to nominate their peers—who in their judgement are the best— in 140 separate practice areas, then return the surveys in anonymous prepaid return envelopes or through our secure online process. We then tallied the votes from those surveys to compile this list. Was my attorney left off the list because he or she does not advertise in TAMPA Magazine? Absolutely not. Any lawyer on the list and also advertising is purely coincidental.

“I’ve been a designer/ merchandiser in the apparel business since 1978. The late 1970’s gave birth to the “preppy” era, which began my infatuation with luxury clothing. I admired fashion icons such as Ralph Lauren and Luciano Barbera. I ventured into the world of ‘bespoke’ clothing to offer my clients the ability to design a garment that fits them beautifully, no matter their shape or size. Fit and first impressions are paramount in any business. If you are just out of law school or a senior partner in a big firm, the way your clothing fits is a testament to your sense of style and attention to detail. Dress to impress may tend to overdo it. Dress for success ensures that your associates and your clients take you seriously. A poor sense of style and a terrible fitting garment will get more attention and will be hard to forget. Make sure that they remember you for your good taste and professionalism, not your lack of fashion sense.” David Kahn, Bespoke & Co. (813) 857-7876 bespokeandcofl.com

“If I could give one piece of advice to the residents of Tampa, it would be that not every trend in the moment is for everyone. There are certain things that look good on a model we see on a magazine, but would not necessarily look good on us once we buy it. Fashion is within us, and standing out from the rest is truly unique. At Sew Fast our goal is to make you look good, no matter the obstacle.

BROOK NUTTER PERSONAL INJURY Here to Assist You Brook Nutter has been around the court system his entire life. The Tampa native grew up working at his father’s law office when he was 15 years old. After law school, he worked as an Assistant State Attorney helping victims of crimes. When he decided to go into private practice, he knew that he wanted to continue to help people. “I grew up seeing my father help people and always knew that I wanted to do the same. Most of our clients come from referrals from prior clients. I hear from former clients sometimes years after their case has closed, thanking me for helping them and thanking me for helping their family member or friend they referred. It is very rewarding to know that you have made a positive difference in someone’s life.” When you have been the victim of any injury - an accident at work, an automobile accident, animal bite, slip and fall, or electrocution, you may be unsure of how to best look out for yourself, your family, and your health. You may have questions about your injuries, such as what doctor you can go to if you don’t have insurance and who pays your out of pocket medical expenses. You may start getting calls from the “at fault” person’s insurance company and wonder if you should talk to them. But, most of all, you probably just want your life to get back to normal. Brook can help you. He will meet with you free of charge to answer any questions you might have and explain your rights as the victim of a personal injury or accident. “I communicate personally with each of my clients throughout their case. As soon as they hire me as their attorney, I begin thinking of how we can help them succeed and put their life back together.” Thanks to his background, Brook has years of courtroom experience and has tried hundreds of criminal and personal injury cases. If your case cannot be handled out of the courtroom, you can count on Brook to fight for you every step of the way until your case is resolved. Education: Marion Military Institute, A.A.; University of Florida, B.S.; South Texas College of Law, Doctor of Jurisprudence.

MAJ VASIGH, ESQ. DEFENSE ATTORNEY Defending Tampa The Attorney You Never Think You’ll Need — Until You Do Most people go through life thinking they’ll never need a criminal defense attorney. And many of them never will. But sometimes, a regular, decent, professional person — a teacher, college student, nurse, or fellow lawyer — will find themselves in a situation they never thought they’d be in. That’s when they call Maj Vasigh, a criminal defense attorney in Tampa whose practice specializes in criminal defense litigation. The majority of his clientele aren’t the type of “hard criminals” your mind first conjures up when you hear the phrase “criminal defense.” They’re just people. People who made a bad judgment call or found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. “Folks get this really terrible feeling in the pit of their stomach when they get arrested,” says Maj, a University of Florida graduate. “There’s fear, anxiety, shame. All these awful emotions you never want to experience, piled up into one.” Part of Maj’s job as their attorney is to put clients at ease during the initial consultation, “Clients tell me the most valuable thing I give them is peace of mind.” It’s one of the most rewarding parts of the job — that and the thrill of the courtroom. But the real satisfaction comes when he knows he’s helped save a client’s career and reputation. “Representing a genuinely innocent person,” says Maj. “That’s what keeps me up at night because the consequences of failure are so high. And when I’m representing a client who has done something wrong, it’s making sure that the client’s constitutional rights are protected, minimizing the consequences, and lifecoaching to prevent the future behavior that got them to me in the first place. My goal is to never represent frequent flyers at my law firm.” Maj Vasigh is a proud lifetime member of the Hillsborough County Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys, is rated “Superb 10.0” by the independent attorney rating service, Avvo. com and is rated as a Top 100 Criminal Trial Attorney in Florida by the National trial Lawyers Association. He has experience defending cases throughout central Florida, from criminal traffic offenses and misdemeanors, to complex first degree felony cases. Once court is adjourned, you might find him at the dog park with his Pitbull rescue and English bulldog or on the tennis courts, swinging out his own stress relief.

FRANCES MARTINEZ FAMILY LAW When your life is being split in two, it’s good to have someone like Frances Martinez to help you put it back together. “I work aggressively for my clients to make sure they get the best outcome. When a family law case goes to court, the judge has a lot of discretion in making decisions that impact a family’s life. I think it is important that my clients understand all of their options and everything that could be affected by the ruling.” Frances began her career as a criminal defense attorney so she has years of experience in the courtroom. A lot of her criminal cases had family law components so the transition to handling primarily family cases came naturally. “What I like best about family law is that you can provide actual solutions for people. If you can help parents figure out how to work together for their kids or you can give a spouse a system to support him or herself, it has real long-term, lasting consequences.” Frances speaks both English and Spanish fluently. She was born in Puerto Rico but moved to Tampa as a child and attended Academy of the Holy Names. Frances’ practice includes divorces, child support and custody issues, termination of parental rights, and domestic violence injunctions. DAVID MITCHELL CONSUMER PROTECTION, HEALTH CARE LITIGATION
SCOTT JEEVES PERSONAL INJURY LAW
Ending Consumer Harassment
Personal Attention
By the time David Mitchell’s clients call him, many are at their wit’s end. “When debt collectors start harassing someone, the consumer usually doesn’t know how to put an end to it. I help everyday people fight back against debt collectors and telemarketers. When you are on the receiving end of massive amounts of robocalls from a collection company, it can be devastating.”
A Tampa native, Scott Jeeves has dedicated his career to protecting injured victims for 25 years. He has first hand knowledge of how the pain of an accident can last for months, even years and can drain someone emotionally as well as financially.
David helps put an end to the calls and harassment. “Whether people actually owe a debt or not, they should not be harassed by improper collection practices. Often times, what the collectors are doing is illegal. The consumer protection lawyers at Maney|Gordon concentrate in the federal and state laws that provide relief for our clients. We know how to prosecute the companies and how to make these companies pay for improper practices. We give our clients the best representation possible.” David has helped consumers across the nation hold debt collectors, subprime auto lenders, payday and title loan companies, credit card companies, mortgage companies, student loan companies, and major banks accountable for their conduct. He represents both debtors and non-debtors who are the victims of abusive debt collection practices. Education: University of Florida, B.S.B.A.; Stetson University College of Law, Juris Doctor; Stetson University, M.B.A.

“If you’re in pain, it can be difficult to focus on all the forms and legalities that insurance companies make you deal with and you can miss out on benefits owed to you. I like representing people and helping them. I am here for my clients any time of the day or night whenever they have a question or need help.” Education: University of Florida, B.A.; Stetson College of Law, Juris Doctor

Dealing with the aftermath of my injuries and the subsequent hassle with the insurance companies made me realize that if you don’t take care of yourself and your injuries immediately, it can have lasting repercussions. When you are in an accident, you need to get help immediately from someone who knows how to help you. A lot of people think they can handle personal injury cases, we specialize in them.”

Several years ago James Magazine represented a client whose mom had been injured in a car accident in California and was in a coma. Initially the insurance company said they would pay $100,000 but then came back and claimed there was an exclusion on the policy and said they would not pay anything. The young man only wanted to help his mother and was devastated by the insurance company’s actions. When James took the case he was able to see the faults and misinformation in the insurance company’s claim and after filing suit against them, the insurance company paid $4.2 million to settle the case. “Insurance companies know by reputation who has the knowledge, tenacity, and wherewithal to take a case to trial and win. I have been a personal injury lawyer from the beginning of my career. I firmly believe in my clients and appreciate the opportunity to help them against big corporations and insurance companies who are trying to intimidate them.” Education: Baldwin College, B.A.; Cleveland Marshall College of Law, Juris Doctor

When you want to eat healthy, where do you go for that type of food? When I want to eat healthy, I will stop by Fresh Kitchen for a bowl. During the work week hustle when I am downtown, a salad from Moxie’s will also do the trick. When you exercise, what do you do? Where do you go? I prefer group fitness classes since they are more motivating than working out alone. I work out at LA Fitness but since they don’t have the Les Mills group fitness classes, I also have a punch card for Powerhouse and take Body Attack and CXWORX at that gym with their rockstar instructors. Best Place to Get a Craft Beer: Cigar City Brewing. Variety of options and laid back atmosphere! Best Place to Catch a Live Band: Ceviche. You can sit at the bar with a glass of sangria and be entertained by some very talented groups.

What kind of exercise do you do and where do you go? I start my day at 5:45 each morning with Jazzercize. It’s a great way to kick up the cardio and get my day started before I’m off to elementary school to spend a full day with my students.
Best Place for Girl’s Night Out: When I’m ready for a night out with the girls, I kick off my evening with a stop at Hamburger Mary’s for a round of Drag Queen Bingo, flavorful drinks, and exciting atmosphere.
What’s something people may not know about Tampa? Tampa is an arts enriched community. From the local music studios like mine to the nationally known David A. Straz Center, residents of Tampa believe in and are committed to the performing arts.
Favorite Local Boutique: My favorite local boutique is Créme de la Créme. Sharon keeps all of my favorite scents, cute shoes, and great accessories in stock.
Favorite Breakfast Spot: Ja-Vahz is full of yummy and made to order goodness! I stop by every day on my way to work. Best Italian Food: Osteria Natalina is the best Italian food in Tampa. Spartaco Giolito’s homemade gnocchi is absolutely the best thing ever.
