At Moffitt Cancer Center we see that courage every day in patients who refuse to give up. And we’re proud of the physicians who mirror that courage to boldly innovate using genomics, immunotherapy and other promising new therapies. Congratulations to all our Moffitt physicians who stand among the most respected in cancer care.

OUR TEAM IS WITH YOU EVERY STEP Where Technology Meets Positive Healing for Severe Depression

When it comes to treating severe depression, laughter isn’t the only medicine — but the team at TMS of South Tampa believes that positive energy and personalized attention can work wonders. That’s why you’ll always be greeted with a warm smile, an upbeat hello and thoughtful responses to your questions. Whether it’s Shey helping you get checked in or Christian handling your pharmacy needs, their goal is to make you feel like family — and help you treat your depression with TMS. Neurostar’s Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-cleared treatment that is scientifically proven to yield lasting relief from depression. It works by stimulating key areas of the brain that are under-active in patients with depression through precisely targeted magnetic pulses. Dr. Kenneth Pages’ results are astounding, with 60 percent of patients experiencing positive results and 40 percent achieving complete remission. But Neurostar’s Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) isn’t just changing the lives of patients. Since acquiring this innovative technology, Dr. Pages’ staff has been amazed by the life-changing results they’ve witnessed firsthand. “I’ve seen significant improvement in all of my patients,” says Leo, Lead TMS Technician. “I am very passionate about each treatment and patient, as if they were part of my own family.” Knowing that they are making a direct impact on patients’ lives is what motivates them to do their jobs every single day. “I can’t say enough about my team,” says Dr. Pages. “They just have a magic touch when it comes to supporting our patients and giving them hope. Depression is a dark, lonely place, but my team is specially trained to guide patients in helping them see the light again.”

Make way, craft beer; craft spirits are coming for your spotlight. Check out three local distilleries putting Tampa on the map with their own spins on your bar favorites.

Kozuba and Sons Distillery This family-run distillery was founded in Poland in 2005 and moved their operation to St. Petersburg (Florida, that is) last year. Located in the heart of Warehouse Arts District, their 20,000-square-foot facility incorporates green technology with two 600-liter copper stills and 300 50-gallon American oak barrels to create a rye malt whiskey, white whiskey (a.k.a. moonshine), two cordials and two vodkas. One, called “Starkus,” is an almost whiskey-like barrel-aged vodka named for the Lithuanian tradition of burying a barrel of raw rye spirits upon a baby’s birth that is only to be unearthed on the child’s wedding day. Baby or not, we say a bottle is perfect for any occasion.

Florida Cane Distillery Starting from a terrible tasting experiment in a South Tampa garage, Lee Nelson and Pat O’Brien created Florida Cane Distillery in 2012, one of the first craft distilleries in Florida. The duo worked with local and state legislators to modernize Florida’s distilling laws to allow for tasting rooms and the direct sale of spirits to consumers. While the distillery started out with its signature Florida CANE vodka, filtered through its custom charcoal system, the product lineup has expanded to 10 Florida-inspired flavors of vodka (with names like Plant City Strawberry and Orlando Orange), gin, moonshine and whiskey. Stop by for free tastings and tours Thursday through Sunday; serious wannabe distillers can even take advantage of Florida Cane’s craft distilling workshop (check website for dates and details).

St. Petersburg Distillery The spirits coming out of the booming St. Petersburg Distillery have something going for them few people do: they are born-and-raised Floridians. Launched in 2014 by the Iafrates family, the state’s largest craft distillery uses locally grown ingredients in all of its products, from Okeechobee corn for whiskey to Florida honey and oranges from Polk and Pasco counties. Their small-batch, pot-stilled brands include Old St. Pete, featuring a vodka, gin, rum and whiskey, Oak & Palm coconut and spiced rums, Tippler’s Orange Liqueur, Royal Mead Honey Wine and Banyan’s Reserve Vodka, voted 2016’s best artisan vodka in the South by Southern Living Magazine.

ELLA’S AMERICANA FOLK ART CAFÉ

Written By McKenna Kelley

THE MERMAID TAVERN

A guide to eating your way through Tampa’s Seminole Heights neighborhood

You could say the development of the Seminole Heights dining scene was a bit of a slow burn. While the neighborhood bar The Independent joined longtime favorites Cappy’s Pizza and the Front Porch in 2005, it took nearly another half decade before Ella’s Americana Folk Art Café and The Refinery set up shop. The pace began to pick up in 2013 with the opening of Ty Rodriguez and Ferrell Alvarez’s Rooster & the Till, quickly followed by The Refinery’s sister restaurant, Fodder and Shine, and Ichicoro Ramen. With the neighborhood’s anchors now in place, Seminole Heights began to fill out with sushi (Ebisu Sushi Shack), coffee (The Blind Tiger and Jet City) and bars (The Mermaid Tavern), which helped drive Tampa’s love for craft beer to a new level. Now it’s hard to go more than a few weeks without hearing of another new eatery staking a claim along Florida or Nebraska Avenues, and the Heights have officially become one of Tampa’s hottest spots for dining and drinking. In the coming months, look for unique concepts like C House, where every menu item begins with the letter C, and Shuffle: The Heights Shuffleboard Society, which focuses on, well, shuffleboard, with four full-size shuffleboard courts alongside food and drink. Use this list to plan out your next gastronomic exploration of Seminole Heights.

on Pointe The Tampa Ballet Theatre is growing the area’s dance scene one step at a time

L

indsay Clark started dancing when she was 3 years old and loved it from the very beginning. “I wanted to take as many classes as possible,” she says. “My parents were very supportive once they saw how dedicated I was. By the time I was 9, I was taking classes five, sometimes six, days a week.”

Throughout middle and high school Clark, seen right, continued her classes and training, and for three years her mother drove her two hours each day to study with the Greenville Ballet in North Carolina. By the time she was 13, she was the youngest company member to join the Asheville Ballet. “I never felt uncomfortable when I was dancing,” Clark says. “It was like second nature to me and always brought me joy.” While attending a summer program to become part of the American Ballet Theatre, Clark’s whole world changed when she landed the wrong way on her ankle. “My shin turned black and blue, and they sent me home,” she says. “[Joining American Ballet Theatre] was the opportunity I had been waiting for my whole life, but I thought, if I can’t dance, at least I can still be a part of the community and pass along my knowledge.” Clark moved to Tampa to be closer to family and began teaching, eventually starting the Tampa Ballet Theatre, now the resident company for Ruth Eckerd Hall and the only professional 20 DEC JAN 2018

company in Tampa Bay. “I thought it was sad that there was not a professional ballet company in Tampa,” Clark says. “The good thing about our company is that students pay for classes until they are 15, and then if they are good enough, they become apprentices with the company and tuition is free. Dance classes and workshops can be a financial burden for families, but if students are good enough, they deserve the opportunity.” “Our company is all about making sure students have opportunities and creating jobs in the community so dancers do not have to go somewhere else to get professional training,” she adds. Clark says the company has grown significantly over the last several years; she even hears from students across the globe looking to join. Fostering a child’s love of dance is important to the art’s survival, she adds. “There is so much history involved with ballet,” Clark says. “It is important that we preserve the art and share it with future generations. Paintings never go away, but you can’t keep ballet alive without live performances.”

Around

Telluride’s unique gondola system provides free transportation between Mountain Village and the town of Telluride. It’s a 3-mile scenic ride from Oak Street Plaza in Downtown Telluride to Mountain Village Center. It’ll only take you 13 minutes, but the sweeping 360-degree views will make you wish it were longer.

GETTING

Equipped

If you don’t have your own ski equipment, services like Black Tie Ski Rentals (blacktieskis. com) and Ski Butlers (skibutlers.com) provide convenient services like in-room fittings, delivery and slopeside service. We recommend calling ahead of time to secure your reservation and make sure they deliver to your hotel.

utdoor adventurers will find no shortage of activities, from skiing and snowboarding to hiking and whitewater rafting during warmer months. If you’re interested in catching a show or live music while you’re in town, check out The Sheridan Opera House (110 N. Oak St.) or Fly Me to The Moon Saloon (136 E. Colorado Ave.), both located downtown.

f hitting the slopes is your main goal, plan to stay in Mountain Village, a community of resorts, restaurants and shops just beside the town of Telluride, where you can’t go wrong with one of the picturesque mountainside ski lodges. To get the full ski vacation experience, splurge on a ski-in, ski-out resort, where you can literally ski to and from your hotel. The Peaks Resort and Spa (136 Country Club Drive) is located slopeside and offers luxury ski-in/ski-out accommodations, plus a high-end Italian restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows and a spa. Other favorites are Mountain Lodge Telluride (457 Mountain Village Blvd.) and Madeline Hotel and Residences (568 Mountain Village Blvd.). If you prefer to stay closer to town, the New Sheridan Hotel (231 W. Colorado Ave.) is a historic boutique hotel in the heart of downtown located just two blocks from the gondola, which takes guests to Mountain Village for free.

or a small town, there’s a big list of dining options around Telluride. Take a break from skiing to have lunch at Bon Vivant, a ski-in, ski-out restaurant that serves up delicious open-faced sandwiches, soups, hot chocolates, desserts and of course, views, on the top of the mountain (top of the Polar Queen Express, Lift 5). For a more casual lunch, head to Gorrono Ranch (565 Mountain Village Blvd.) in Mountain Village, or head downtown for award-winning Detroit-style pizza at Brown Dog Pizza (110 E. Colorado Ave.). For dinner one night, make a reservation at Alpino Vino (See Forever trail, below the top of Lift 14). It’s truly an amazing experience — your personal “driver” will pick you up at the top of the gondola and take you to the restaurant in their enclosed Snow-Coach. There, indulge in a five-course Italian dinner. It’s worth noting they also serve lunch during the day on their multi-tiered deck. Another unforgettable dinner experience? Allred’s Restaurant at the top of the gondola (Station St. Sophia). If you head downtown one evening, the Chop House (233 W. Colorado Ave.) at the New Sheridan is a Telluride institution, serving up perfectly cut steaks, French wines and brunch on weekends.

SEE &

If you’re here for more than three or four days, it’s worth heading to one of the nearby hot springs. Orvis Hot Springs (1585 Co Road 3, Ridgeway, CO) is an affordable destination that’s just 40 minutes away (heads up—it’s clothing optional!). For a more luxurious and private experience, call Telluride Outfitters (456 Mountain Village Blvd.) and book a tour to Dunton Hot Springs (52068 Co Road 38, Dolores, CO), a restored mining town resort about two hours away.

etween an increasing number of baby boomers getting older and the current rate of U.S. medical school graduates, the wait to see a doctor is about to get longer. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, by the year 2025, the United States could face a shortage of 46,000 to 90,000 doctors. One solution? Foreign medical graduates, known as FMGs. Still, says Dr. Shiv Kalan, there’s a catch. “Nearly everyone who graduates from a U.S. medical school gets a residency position,” he explains. “For foreign graduates, that’s not necessarily the case.” To help FMGs complete the U.S. Hospital Clinical Experience component on their residency application, Dr. Kalan founded MedicalObs. It is an integrative observation program designed to match graduates with Tampa Bay area physicians who have volunteered to be observed. FMGs accepted to MedicalObs will have the chance to meet with residency program directors, go through mock residency interviews, experience American culture, and even work with local company American Accent Coach to reduce their accents and improve their English skills. “This program helps you set yourself up for success and get you on the fast track toward your goals,” Dr. Kalan says. “It provides students and graduates with

a clear framework for integration into a U.S. hospital and American culture.” MedicalObs is one of a kind; there’s no program like it in the country. MedicalObs puts a high priority on its participants experiencing everyday life in America. Dr. Kalan brings the FMGs to museums, restaurants, sporting events, mixers and other social events to help them connect with their peers and earn a unique advantage in their residency application. “The FMGs get to explore medicine in a U.S hospital, strategize with a personal coach about their residency goals and earn an edge over other applicants, all while learning about American culture,” he says. MedicalObs is looking for physicians willing to be shadowed. There is a simple application for both preceptors and FMGs available on the MedicalObs website. To learn more, visit MedicalObs.com.

“It has been an absolute pleasure with Dr. Kalan during my strive for the match with an internal medicine residency. As an FMG, I was not well-versed on the system, and he was the one who made it possible to achieve my life goal.”

The Town HENRY Plant Built

How a Connecticut investor turned Tampa from a crumbling small town to a Southern powerhouse

Written By Michael Kwitko Images courtesy of the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System

T

he town of Tampa faced an uncertain future in the late 19th century.

The Civil War had reduced the population to the point that only a few hundred townspeople remained. The port continued to trade with the rest of the Gulf of Mexico’s coastal cities, but there was no capital for heavy industry to make the port competitive with the likes of New Orleans or Havana. According to Anthony Pizzo’s “Tampa Town 1824-1886,” an unknown soldier returning from the war remarked, “Tampa was a hard-looking place. Streets and lots were grown up with weeds and the outlook certainly was not very encouraging.” Yellow fever also ravaged the community through the 1870s and 1880s.

In many ways the U.S. Army’s decision to decommission and deconstruct Fort Brooke in 1883 was seen as the death knell for the small town at the mouth of the Hillsborough River. The Civil War was in many ways a disaster for Tampa, but it provided opportunities. The U.S. government began to invest in businessmen who were willing to help the Southern economies recover from the war. Henry B. Plant was one such man. Plant was born in Connecticut, but he knew the South well. He moved to Jacksonville in 1853 at the age of 34 and was immediately struck by the potential for economic growth in the state of Florida. His business ventures in the state led to him to develop a private post delivery company that flourished in the southeastern United States until the Civil War forced him back north. Plant, however, would not be denied. He set his eyes on Florida once again when the fighting stopped and bought the Atlantic & Gulf Railroad in 1879 and the Charleston & Savannah Railroad in 1880, per the Henry B. Plant Museum. The two companies gave him something of a regional railroad network, but it lacked cohesion. Plant needed a base of operations for his grand vision of a Southeastern railroad network; he chose Tampa. The small, struggling village didn’t seem like much, but it boasted a natural harbor and an established port. In Tampa, Plant saw a foundation to stake the future of his company on. He commissioned a railroad line across central Florida to connect Tampa to his nascent network and then made Tampa the central hub of his operations in the South in 1884, according to his namesake museum.

1853

The benefits were immediate. Tampa, now connected to the rest of the country by railroad, could easily ship fish and

phosphate north, bringing much-needed capital into the city. Plant used the money made to invest back into the town itself. He built his railroad line directly to the coast and then invested to expand the relatively small Port of Tampa. The newly developed city of Port Tampa bustled with trade, allowing merchants doing business in the city to ship their goods directly from the port to the United States as a whole through Plant’s railroad network. Plant also invested in a hotel of over 500 rooms. The newly christened Tampa Bay Hotel was completed in 1891. It was a lavish addition to the recovering but still relatively modest town and easily one of the most advanced hotels of its day. Electric lighting, a phone in every room and a functional elevator made the hotel reason enough to visit Tampa. Plant’s investments had paid off. The small town that was overgrown with weeds and on the verge of succumbing to yellow fever was now a bustling port town and railroad hub. Plant would pass away at the age of 79 in 1899, but he lived just long enough to see the beginnings of what his investments would truly mean for the city of Tampa. On April 21, 1898, the United States declared war on Spain. Part of the United States’ aims in the war was to support the independence movement brewing in the Spanish colony of Cuba. The United States Army and Navy therefore needed a southern port and a southern railway hub to transport troops in preparation for an invasion of Cuba. Tampa, thanks to Plant’s investments, was just the city for the task. The United States Army poured into Tampa via the railroads, and the Navy filled the port in preparation for a war with Spain in the Gulf of

Mexico and Caribbean Sea. Soldiers waited for months in Tampa before an invasion of Cuba could be approved, and those months were critical to the city’s success. Soldiers and war correspondents spent their days and nights living, shopping and partying in Tampa. According to the Tampa Bay History Center, the town was stretched to the point of bursting, yet it thrived on the lively atmosphere the soldiers brought with them.

1891

The war itself lasted less than five months, but its legacy lived on — as did Henry B. Plant’s legacy following his death a year later. The Plant Railroad System was merged into the newly formed Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1902. Tampa was no longer the hub of an entire system; rather, it was one of many important hubs in a system that stretched from Tampa in the south to central Virginia in the north. The experiences of the war and the regional expansion necessitated a new physical hub for railroad activity in the city — Tampa Union Station, completed in 1912. Though now on the U.S. National Registry of Historic Places, Tampa Union Station was at the time a fully modern and expansive hub. Tampa continued to grow on the back of Plant’s railroads, never once stagnating. Expansion brought growing pains, but they were always followed by growth. The Spanish-American War had one more lasting effect on Tampa. The U.S. military saw how vital Tampa proved to be during the war, and their interest never truly subsided. The legacy of Fort Brooke would be built upon during the Great Depression. The U.S. Air Force established Southeast Air Base Tampa on May 24, 1939. By Dec. 1 of that year it was renamed MacDill Field in honor of the recently deceased Colonel Leslie MacDill. It served as a training ground for bomber pilots during World War II and was made Strategic Air Command by 1946. Today, MacDill Air Force Base remains one of the most important military bases in the

The Port of Tampa deals with a yearly cargo haul worth over $4 billion a year, supporting 80,000 jobs, according to the American Association of Port Authorities. The Plant Railroad System is now fully integrated into a railroad system that allows goods made or sold in Tampa and its port to reach as far north as the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario. Both Tampa Union Station and the H.B. Plant Museum, formerly the Tampa Bay Hotel, are historic landmarks. Disease and a lack of capital left Tampa teetering on the brink of collapse at the tail end of the nineteenth century, yet H.B. Plant’s vision of an economically vibrant Florida would not be denied — and neither would the city of Tampa’s potential.

hroughout her life, the average woman experiences a roller coaster of physical, emotional and mental changes. There are the obvious milestones: adolescence, pre-conception, childbirth, and menopause. Many women also experience embarrassing conditions that aren’t often communicated beyond the privacy of your own bedroom: postpartum and aging issues such as urinary incontinence, vaginal prolapse and hormone imbalances. These aren’t things most women are willing to broadcast — even to their healthcare providers. Dr. Jennifer Gilby, a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist, has become highly experienced in treating incontinence and pelvic floor disorders. At her private practice of nearly 18 years, she has created a comprehensive menu of services, treatments and procedures designed to support women through every milestone, struggle and change. From routine and high-risk obstetric care, to the “unmentionable” urologic and gynecologic issues and questions, Women’s Care Florida-Absolute Health and Wellness offers women a

comfortable, serene, spa-like setting in brand new state-of-the-art facilities. Supported by an outstanding, all female, highly skilled staff to compliment the superbly trained all female physicians and midwives, Dr. Gilby strives to help women solve these embarrassing problems, and get back to a normal life. She wants women to know that there is effective, often non-surgical, treatment for prolapse and incontinence, and that women don’t have to just “live with it”. Many women struggling with incontinence can be cured with noninvasive pelvic floor rehabilitation and strengthening therapy which is offered in her offices. In the event surgical repair is necessary, Dr. Gilby is extensively trained in hysteroscopy, vaginal surgery, laparoscopy and daVinci Robotics for minimally invasive treatment of abnormal bleeding, incontinence and prolapse. Most of her surgical patients go home the same day and do not even require an overnight stay in the hospital. Dr. Gilby is also a proponent in the field of bio-identical hormone replacement and pellets. She treats perimenopausal and menopausal women to help relieve the adverse effects of declining hormone levels. Whatever stage of life they’re in, patients can feel confident knowing they’ll receive customized personal treatment with a compassionate physician, nurse practitioner or midwife who understands better than anyone what a woman’s mind and body go through.

WHO DECIDES WHO IS A TOP DOCTOR? Who picks the doctors? In September, we mailed over 9,000 surveys to physicians in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties. We obtained the list of physicians from the Florida Department of Health, including M.D.s (medical doctors), D.O.s (osteopathic doctors) and podiatrists. We asked the physicians to nominate their peers—who in their judgement are the best— in 52 separate medical specialties, then return the surveys in anonymous prepaid return envelopes. We then tallied the votes from those surveys to compile this list. Does TAMPA Magazine check out all of the doctors nominated? Yes. After the list is compiled, we verify that the doctor is not on probation or had their license revoked. Was my doctor left off the list because he or she does not advertise in TAMPA Magazine? Absolutely not. Any doctor on the list and also advertising is purely coincidental.

The New Year is right around the corner, but the time between now and resolution central is full of delicious meals and decadent desserts that may have you breaking out the stretchy pants. Whether you’re ready to work off that extra slice of pie now or are just game-planning your new exercise regimen, here is a full month’s worth of workouts to help you switch up your fitness.

DAY 1 The “Pilates on Steriods” workout at Mantra Fitness combines core, cardio, balance, flexibility and strength training in a single 50-minute class that will have you torching calories, shedding fat and building muscle before you know it by minimizing downtime and stimulating the slow twitch muscle fibers. Feeling the burn yet? Tampa (813) 321-8292 1710 S. Dale Mabry Hwy. Sarasota (941) 201-1087 3908 S. Tamiami Trail #D mantrafitness.com

4. Group training at Viking Fitness

DAY 2 Put your bicycle through its paces with the 17 miles of challenging off-road bicycling trails at Alafia River State Park. Local bike shop AJ’s Bikes hosts an Intro to Mountain Biking skills clinic each month for beginners (next class is Jan. 13, check site for details). Lithia (813) 685-2453 14326 South County Road 39 ajsbikes.com DAY 3 The abbreviation for American BellyDance Studio is well, ABS, and for good reason. Work on yours with belly dancing lessons for beginners through performance-level dancers, or try a specialty cardio class. Lutz (813) 416-8333 102 Whitaker Road americanbellydance.com DAY 4 If you like the one-on-one attention of personal training but want the motivation of working out in a group, try a circuit class with the crew at Viking Fitness, which keeps classes small so expert instructors can provide individual feedback. 1614 N. 17th St. 1221 W. Cass St. (813) 906-6305 / vkngfitness.com

FLORIDA PAIN MEDICINE INTERVENTIONAL SPINE & PAIN MANAGEMENT EVERY DAY THE EXPERTS AT FLORIDA PAIN MEDICINE HELP PATIENTS OVERCOME DEBILITATING PAIN SO THEY CAN RELIVE LIFE AND ENJOY THEIR FAVORITE ACTIVITIES AGAIN. “By the time patients come to us, they have tried many different conservative measures or medicines with no success,” says founder Dr. Maulik Bhalani. “We are a patient-centered practice, more focused on treating patients like family than ordering another lab test or writing a prescription.” Florida Pain Medicine has four convenient locations in the Tampa Bay area, as well as offices on the east coast. Their team of four physicians and three physician extenders use the latest technological advances to develop an individualized treatment which most effectively fits their patient’s needs. Physicians and extenders even meet monthly after hours to discuss what treatments have worked best, and to explore the newest options. Florida Pain Medicine has been so successful with patient care and is so well known for having the highest ethical and academic standards of the latest educational information regarding pain management, that they were selected as a core rotation for the University of South Florida’s ACGME Pain Medicine Fellowship Program. “We are one of the few pain medicine practices in the entire country that has the honor of training future generation of pain doctors in the best practices of pain management and advanced interventional pain procedures,” says Dr. Bhalani. Because of their expertise, Florida Pain Medicine is able to help patients with most severe chronic pain symptoms. Pain can be caused by bone, muscle, nerve damage, fibromyalgia, cancer pain or any other painful illnesses and Florida Pain Medicine is here to help. They focus on developing a treatment plan to help you to live life to the fullest without being dragged down by opiates or other sedating pain medications. He states, “The problem with pain medication is that while it stops the pain, it can be addictive and/or sedating; people are therefore not able to fully participate functionally and enjoy their life.” “All of our physicians here stand for the same mission, ‘Restore Function, Relive Life,’ and we try to find the most effective treatment for a patient’s pain so they can enjoy their life again,” he adds. “We’ve helped anywhere from a 70-year-old get back on the ski slopes, a 30-year-old patient run marathons, a 50-year-old enjoy a day of shopping with the family again and patients of all ages in-between.”

BORIS KAWLICHE, M.D. BOARD CERTIFIED PSYCHIATRIST THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION HAS DECLARED THAT DEPRESSION IS NOW THE NUMBER-ONE CAUSE OF DISABILITY IN THE WORLD. For Dr. Boris Kawliche, seeing the disease firsthand helped guide him toward his future career. “My mom had terrible depression when I was growing up, and she was essentially institutionalized for 20 years,” he says. “I wasn’t conscious of it at the time, but I think my mom’s depression had to have influenced my career move into psychiatry.” Today, Dr. Kawliche is on the cutting-edge of depression treatment. He is one of Tampa Bay’s few providers of FDA-approved TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation), a non-invasive treatment for people who have not responded to antidepressants that uses electromagnetic induction to stimulate the neurons in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. This part of the brain is responsible for executive function, allowing us to make plans for the future, solve problems, feel good, bounce back from adversity and more. In people with depression, PET scans show that the prefrontal cortex is grossly underactive; TMS can be amazingly restorative. In studies, 60 percent of TMS patients achieve remission from depression with no side effects, including the weight gain and sexual functioning issues that typically come with antidepressants. The equipment in Dr. Kawliche’s practice is capable of managing the Theta Burst protocol, which is not covered by insurance because it has not received FDA approval so far. It is probably the most advanced form of TMS available today. It takes just five 10-minute sessions to complete, compared to the 36 sessions of 37 minutes required by traditional TMS, making more accessible for those who have a tight schedule, like professionals, business executives or students. “Anxiety has been very responsive to TMS. The VA is using TMS to treat posttraumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries. There’s the possibility of treating autism, ADHD and certain neurological disorders, like Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s.” Dr. Kawliche has even tested TMS on other parts of the body to treat chronic pain, like his own Achilles tendonitis. He says after not being able to run for years he was able to run for two hours after one TMS treatment to his ankle; he also has gotten great results treating patients with lower back pain but this is off label use. ROBERT HOOKER, M.D. CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON BEFORE HE BECAME AN EXPERT IN HEALING HEARTS, DR. ROBERT HOOKER WAS A PARAMEDIC. “I was a paramedic in college and was interested in the medical field, but it did not not galvanize for me until a few years after college,” he says. “My father-in-law was a physician and an incredible person. Watching him work and interact with patients and other physicians sealed the deal in deciding what I wanted to do with my life. The joy he brought to patients and their families really inspired me. I wanted to do the same.” While completing a vascular surgery fellowship at Stanford University, Dr. Hooker had the opportunity to study with the pioneer in thoracic transplantation and decided he wanted to devote medical career to helping people whose hearts were failing them. “At Florida Advanced Cardiothoracic Surgery, we see patients with very complex problems from all over the state of Florida,” he says. “Our patients are often very sick, and seeing them have good outcomes is the highlight of my job.”

Dr. Hooker is an expert in thoracic transplantation and ventricular assist devices and specializes in thoracic aortic pathology, valve repair and replacement and arrhythmia surgery. “The advances in treatment of advanced congestive heart failure as well as transcatheter valve replacements are really exciting,” he says. “We now have artificial pumps that almost have the same success rate as traditional transplants. This is important because there is a shortage of donor hearts. Transcatheter valves are also amazing because patients who could not have a valve replacement by conventional means are now getting a new valve and going home the next day.” Education M.D., Weill Cornell Medical College (New York City); General Surgery training, SUNY Downstate; Residency, University of Chicago; Vascular and Cardiothoracic Fellowships, Stanford University

I could have one day where I have to talk to families about end-of-life care. The next day I may discover a newly diagnosed tumor or heart murmur. No two days are the same.” Dr. Kalan’s father and brother are also internal medicine physicians, and he attributes his success as a physician to the support his parents and siblings have provided. He was attracted to the level of interaction internists have with patients and their families. “It’s a very social field, and you engage with different types of people from different backgrounds,” Dr. Kalan says. “I treat every patient like I would treat my own family.” As a hospitalist leader, Dr. Kalan understands there is a growing need for more doctors in our communities. He recently founded MedicalObs, an integrative observation program that matches foreign medical school graduates with local physicians. This enables them to complete the U.S. Clinical Experience (USCE) components they need to apply for residency while immersing them in American culture (see page 24 to learn more). “I want to give them an enriching experience which promotes who we are as a health system and culture so that they choose to come back and grow within our local community,” he says. “It’s a win for everyone.” Education M.D., University of South Florida College of Medicine; Residency in Internal Medicine, University of South Florida; Board Certified and Licensed, American Board of Internal Medicine

GEOFFREY M. KWITKO, M.D. F.A.C.S. OCULOPLASTIC SURGERY AND NEURO-OPHTHALMOLOGY DR. GEOFFREY KWITKO HAD A VISION FOR HIS LIFE LONG BEFORE HE BECAME ONE OF TAMPA’S MOST DISTINGUISHED OCULOPLASTIC SURGEONS. Growing up, he watched his father revolutionize the ophthalmology world by being the first doctor in Canada to insert intraocular lens implants during cataract surgery. It’s a distinction that, among many others, helped cement his reputation as a pioneer in the field—he was even knighted shortly before he passed away in 2002. As a teenager working in his father’s practice, Geoffrey always knew that, like his father, he wanted to carve his own unique path in ophthalmologic history. “I always wanted to be an eye doctor,” Dr. Kwitko says, “but I didn’t know I would specialize in oculoplastics until I met a professor during my residency.” After his residency, he practiced in Montreal for a year. He became frustrated with the sluggish health care system. “I remember this 80-year-old woman who had an infected tear sac,” he recalls. “It would have taken me 20 minutes to fix, but we couldn’t get her into an OR for six months.” He decided then and there that he couldn’t practice in an environment that allowed patients to suffer. He set his sights on Tampa, a city, that at the time, had only one other oculoplastic surgeon. Now, more than 25 years later, the Harbour Island resident has established himself as one of the world’s most renowned experts on cosmetic eyelid surgery. Dr. Kwitko specializes in neuro ophthalmology, thyroid eye disease, orbital diseases, orbital cancers, tearing problems and dry eye syndrome. “I enjoy the cosmetic part and doing trauma and cancer reconstruction is very rewarding,” he says. When he’s not in surgery, Dr. Kwitko unwinds by hitting the hockey rink. Some of his patients might be surprised to discover that once upon a time, Dr. Kwitko was a world-class mogul skier. “It was either keep skiing or get a real job,” Dr. Kwitko jokes. MICHAL WALDMAN SEES ALL KINDS OF DIFFERENT PATIENTS, BUT ONE KIND IN PARTICULAR STANDS OUT TO HER. “My absolute favorite thing is when a patient tells me, ‘I’ve had foot and ankle pain my whole life and have seen 20 different doctors who couldn’t help me, so coming to you is a last resort before completely giving up,’ and I’m able to relieve their pain,” she says. Though many doctors deal with issues of the bones, skin, muscles and nerves of the foot, as a podiatrist, Dr. Waldman treats it all. “I get to help with all aspects of a very small part of the body,” she says. “As a podiatrist, I am an expert on the foot and ankle and can use that expertise accurately.” Dr. Waldman takes a hands-on approach to treatment. She is one of the only podiatrists in the Tampa Bay area formally trained in minimally invasive, non-surgical treatments for pain management of the foot and ankle, including amniotic fluid and mesenchymal stem cell injections. JOAQUIM “JACK” FARINHAS, M.D. NEUROINTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGIST

ANGELO FERNANDES, M.D. GASTROENTEROLOGIST

AS MINIMALLY INVASIVE TECHNIQUES BECOME MORE STANDARD TREATMENTS, DR. JOAQUIM FARINHAS SAYS THIS TYPE OF PROCEDURE WAS WHAT FIRST HOOKED HIM ON HIS SPECIALTY. “As a third-year medical student, I saw a neurointerventional radiologist treat a vascular malformation of the eye through a catheter inserted in the groin,” he says. “That really impressed me — the idea that you can be inside the skull with catheters and look at the center of the brain without open surgery. It’s cutting-edge technology, and that’s what inspires us.”

AS A GENERAL GASTROENTEROLOGIST, DR. ANGELO FERNANDES IS OFTEN ONE OF THE FIRST PHYSICIANS PATIENTS SEE IN THEIR COURSE OF TREATMENT. “It’s a fascinating specialty,” Dr. Fernandes says. “I enjoy the clinical work just as much as I like interacting with patients and getting to know them. Every day is challenging and rewarding.”

As a neurointerventional radiologist, Dr. Farinhas treats vascular diseases of the brain and spinal cord, including strokes, aneurysms and other vascular abnormalities with an approach he calls conservative, yet bold enough to investigate innovative therapies. He recently joined Florida Hospital and calls treating the patients there a privilege. “The human quality can sometimes get lost in the increasingly busy healthcare field; we try to keep humanity top of mind when patients come to us,” he says. “Whether it be a timely conversation or a human touch, I do whatever the patient needs to feel less vulnerable when an acute illness strikes.” Education: M.D., SUNY Upstate Medical University (Syracuse, NY); Internship, St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center (Syracuse, NY); Residency in Diagnostic Radiology and Fellowship in Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology, Montefiore Medical Center (Bronx, NY); Board Certified in Radiology

He joined Florida Hospital earlier this year, and his personalized approach to healthcare aligns well with the overall mission of the organization. “The physicians at Florida Hospital Physician Group take a patient-centered approach,” he says. “We take care of the whole patient rather than just specific conditions or diseases. DR. JAMIE FERNANDEZ UNDERSTANDS THAT PSYCHIATRIC DISEASE CAN BE DEVASTATING, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, SHE SAYS, IT CAN AND SHOULD BE TREATED. “Patients need access to mental healthcare, which will require a reduction in the stigma and negative perceptions about mental illness that are a barrier to so many in need of treatment,” she says. “It is incredibly gratifying to care for individuals and participate in their recovery.”

GROWING UP, DR. MICHAEL HARRIS ALWAYS KNEW HE WANTED TO BECOME A DOCTOR, BUT HE BECAME TRULY INTERESTED IN PURSUING A MEDICAL CAREER WHILE STUDYING MICROBIOLOGY AND CELL SCIENCE IN COLLEGE.

Dr. Fernandez heads the Behavioral Health Center at Memorial Hospital Tampa, where she treats a wide range of mental illnesses, including anxiety, depression, alcoholism, addiction and PTSD, with evidence-based treatment options. She specializes in mood disorders during pregnancy and postpartum, neurocognitive disorders and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), which improves symptoms in more than 80 percent of patients with treatment-resistant depression. “Despite its efficacy, negative perceptions remain, likely because early forms of ECT did not have the safety and comfort measures that are required today,” she says. “Patients do not experience any pain or discomfort during the procedure, and the antidepressant effects are often rapid and profound.” Education: M.D., Cornell University Weill Medical College; Internship, New York Hospital Queens Department of Medicine; Residency in Adult Psychiatry, Stanford University Medical Center; Board Certified in Psychiatry and Neurology

Dr. Rosemurgy utilizes cutting edge, single incision (“scarless”) surgical techniques to treat a variety of conditions including reflux and swallowing disorders, gallbladder, liver and pancreas disorders and more. “Going from traditional open operations to laparoscopy was a huge paradigm shift in surgery,” he says. “With LESS surgery, the only incision we make is in the belly button, which is a natural scar.” He rarely performs open surgeries anymore. “Robotic surgery allows us to do extremely complex operations for cancers of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver and biliary tract through very tiny incisions — affording patients shorter hospital stays and allowing them to quickly return to their normal lives. It’s just better than traditional surgery in every way.”

SHARONA ROSS, M.D., F.A.C.S. MINIMALLY INVASIVE ADVANCED GI SURGERY / FOREGUT (UPPER GI) AND HEPATOBILIARY PANCREATIC SURGERY AS A CHILD IN ISRAEL, DR. SHARONA ROSS KNEW WHAT SHE WANTED TO DO WITH HER LIFE AFTER SEEING THE T.V. SHOW “QUINCY, M.E.” “I was really amazed by the investigations,” Dr. Ross says. “I knew then that I wanted to become a doctor.” While working on research with a local pathologist, Dr. Ross realized her passion was for surgery. After serving in the Israeli Defense Forces for two years, she came to the U.S. for medical school and chose surgery as her specialty. “The pancreas, liver and gallbladder were areas I truly enjoyed,” Dr. Ross says. “I also love technology. I married the two to improve patient outcomes.” She is a leader in her field for her use of robotic and minimally invasive laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) at Florida Hospital Tampa, procedures that result in less downtime for patients and involve less pain and almost no chance of infection. “What I like most is being able to hold the hands of patients whose conditions have affected their everyday lives and tell them there’s a better future,” Dr. Ross says. “Medicine is definitely my calling.” Education: M.D., George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences; Residency in General Surgery, University of South Florida; Fellowship in Gastroenterology, University of South Florida; Board Certified in General Surgery

YASSER SALOUM, M.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.G. GASTROENTEROLOGIST DR. YASSER SALOUM HAS ONE GOAL WHEN PATIENTS COME TO HIM: FIND THE RIGHT DIAGNOSIS AND PROVIDE THE RIGHT TREATMENT THE FIRST TIME. “I try to get to the bottom of the problem before prescribing any medications, and I listen to my patients to determine just what they need,” Dr. Saloum says. “By doing so, I am able to order proper testing for them.” Dr. Saloum focuses on liver disease, reflux issues and constipation with pelvic dysfunction. To get a diagnosis, he uses innovative techniques like MR defecography, anorectal manometry and BRAVO pH testing for reflux. He keeps patients informed of his thoughts and plans for future treatment. “In my opinion, an informed patient is a good patient,” he says. “Our practice is unique. We spend whatever time it takes with patients to address all their concerns during the first visit.” Dr. Saloum was an educator before transitioning to private practice so, in addition to caring for patients, he enjoys sharing his craft with medical students who rotate through his office. “I get the best of both worlds,” he says. DR. ARTHI SANJEEVI, M.D., M.S., EPI GASTROENTEROLOGIST ACCORDING TO DR. ARTHI SANJEEVI, BECOMING A PHYSICIAN MAY HAVE BEEN DESTINY. “It’s hard to say if I chose the path or the path chose me,” she says. “As a child, I was fascinated by the innate intelligence of the human body and curious about its malfunctions. That, combined with a passion to help humanity, garnered my interest in medicine. Having multiple family members with GI issues and a flare for hands-on technical work made Gastroenterology a natural choice.” As a gastroenterologist and interventional endoscopist, Dr. Sanjeevi focuses on pancreaticobiliary disorders, gastrointestinal oncology, gastrointestinal motility and small bowel pathology. She has established an evaluation platform to effectively diagnose swallowing and reflux disorders and performs diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic ultrasounds, ERCP, enteroscopies, and enteral stenting, in addition to standard procedures, such as colonoscopies. Dr. Sanjeevi believes in empowering patients with knowledge of their disease and treatment options. “I consider myself to be their advocate, helping them make informed decisions,” she says. “My biggest reward is the gratitude from my patients and their families. JENNIFER SEMINERIO, M.D. GASTROENTEROLOGIST

ISWANTO SUCANDY, M.D. ADVANCED LIVER, BILIARY AND PANCREATIC SURGEON

WHEN DEALING WITH CHRONIC DISEASES LIKE INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE, PATIENTS NEED CARE FROM A TRUSTED EXPERT. In Tampa, that expert is Dr. Jennifer Seminerio.

LIVER OPERATIONS ARE AMONG THE MOST DIFFICULT MAJOR OPERATIONS TO PERFORM, so patients turn to Dr. Iswanto Sucandy, a Tampa Bay expert in minimally invasive and robotic surgery for disorders of the liver. His patients experience less pain, faster recoveries and shorter hospital stays.

“Somebody close to me was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, so I was very familiar with the disease state and what it takes to control it,” she says. “I became passionate about it because I saw what these patients go through. I tell my patients as long as they’re willing to fight along with me, I’m never going to give up.” By focusing solely on IBD, Dr. Seminerio sees patients throughout their lives, allowing her to get to know them on a personal level and individualize dietary, psychological and medical approaches to their treatment. Often patients need to see a doctor without much advanced notice. “I love being there for patients who just want to see somebody,” Dr. Seminerio says. “I’ll always try to make a way to get them in as soon as possible.”

“What I enjoy most about my job is helping people and saving their lives,” Dr. Sucandy says. “Liver surgery is not optional. It’s not a scenario where you have some pain and get it taken care of next month. Liver tumors absolutely must be treated without delay.” After extensive training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, home of the nation’s premier liver center, Dr. Sucandy came to Florida Hospital Tampa in 2016 to develop the Tampa Bay area’s first and only minimally invasive robotic liver surgery program. He says patients are already reaping the benefits. “The goal is to deliver exceptional care with quick recovery so patients can enjoy better lives,” Dr. Sucandy says. Off the beaten path with John Yodzis President & COO, DOW Electronics Tampa native

Favorite exercise class or gym: CAMP. I am a happy camper. It’s such a cool concept for Tampa. I love the fact that you can choose between circuit, cycle and yoga all in one awesome fitness environment. Favorite day spa: It doesn’t really qualify as a day spa, but for a guy, The Cambridge Club Shave & Barbershop in Hyde Park

Village is a must-try experience. It’s the best place in Tampa for a guy to unwind and enjoy a cocktail or beer while receiving a traditional straight razor shave and a haircut. Favorite Bay-area beach: St. Pete Beach at the Don CeSar. It’s a perfect place to relax and enjoy all that the Bay area has to offer. Favorite place across the bay: Locale Market is such a cool concept for St. Petersburg’s urban core. I love the concept of a quick grab-and-go market that focuses on quality food and a quality customer experience. Favorite place for a craft cocktail and cocktail of choice: The Epicurean Hotel. I love a good bourbon, and the Epicurean always has a great lineup of traditional bourbons and does an excellent job at finding craft distilleries you probably haven’t tried. Plus, their homemade Old Fashioned never disappoints. Favorite place for a healthy meal or snack: Fresh Kitchen. The Ciccio Restaurant Group really got this concept right. It reminds me of something you would see in New York City or Los Angeles — a quick service, healthy concept that never disappoints.

Off the beaten path with Jennifer Puleo, ARNP, MPH Owner, Faces of South Tampa, and Nurse Practitioner Tampa native for 20 years

Favorite place for a power lunch: You can’t beat Cook’s Kitchen’s egg salad sandwich. We are lucky to have the home-cooked British cuisine restaurant so close to Faces! Favorite place for a client dinner: Not only does Armani’s have incredible food, but it also offers gorgeous views of Tampa Bay. Reservations at sunset are icing on the cake. Favorite place for a healthy snack: Swami Juice. The Ah-Sigh-EE Bowl is my favorite. Best place for wings: If you like wings, then you must try the Premium Wings at Doormet. They’re BIG and tossed in an apricot sriracha sauce. Favorite pizza: Cappys’ deep-dish Chicago style pizza. There’s a reason they’ve won so many awards; it’s delicious! Oh, and their Greek salad is incredible, too. Favorite place for a craft cocktail and cocktail of choice: The cucumber gimlet at Ocean Prime with Bombay Sapphire gin, muddled fresh cucumber and hand-squeezed lime. Best barbecue: Holy Hog takes the gold for me. If you are ever in the mood for barbecue but want to take it home, they have a drive-thru!
