Don’t Cry for Me
Argentina Eva Peron: May 7, 1919 – July 16, 1952
“Ambitious, ruthless, untiring, clever and strikingly beautiful, Maria Eva Duarte de Perón had in large measure many of the qualities needed to lift her in a dozen short years from obscurity to fame, wealth and power on the unpredictable currents of Argentine political life.” - (New York Times obituary – July 27, 1952)
Eva ‘Evita’ Perón is a woman who is hard to define. Literature is colourful, yet divided, when it comes to this influential and fascinating woman, who died aged just 33 from cancer. Whether loved or hated, described as a revolutionary or Nazi spy, an attractive accessory to her fascist dictator husband, Juan Perón, or a powerful politician who dominated a weak man, most would agree that Eva Perón was a controversial figure, who, with her husband, altered the course of Argentine history. Eva possessed incredible magnetism. During the 1950s, she was arguably the most powerful woman in the Americas − capturing the heart and soul of the poor, whose causes she championed. Her stormy, passionate, short life brought much hope to Argentina in an age of political power struggles and bloody coups. As a woman and MAY 2012

As a woman and politician concerned with women’s rights, children, the aged, social aid and labour groups, Evita Perón remains a fascinating figure. politician concerned with women’s rights, children, the aged, social aid and labour groups, Evita Perón remains a fascinating figure. Songs, movies and musicals have been written about Eva’s private and political life. It seemed appropriate perhaps, that Madonna, an identity also possessing a similarly high quotient of charisma, portrayed Eva Perón in Evita, a film based on the musical of the same name by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Her Story An actress before she married, Maria Eva Perón was born in May 1919, the youngest of five children. Eva’s father, Juan Duarte, had two families: one with his legal wife, Adela D'Huart, and another with his mistress. María Eva was the fifth child born to the mistress, Juana Ibarguren. Duarte divided his time between two families, although he eventually abandoned his mistress and their children. Duarte died in a car accident when Eva was seven, leaving his illegitimate family struggling. 16

With aspirations to be an actress, Eva moved to Buenos Aires before she was 20. In 1944, she met the then vice president and secretary of war, Colonel Juan Domingo Perón. Perón was a rising political and military power in Argentina and the couple married in 1945. The following year, Juan Perón became president and Eva devoted herself to the poor, working to bring the working classes into a position of political power. She got women the vote and legalised divorce. Evita was a very important part of her husband’s power: although he was beloved by the poor and working classes, she was even more so. A gifted speaker and tireless worker, she dedicated her life to making Argentina a better place for the disenfranchised, and they responded by creating a cult of personality to her that exists to this day. But the Perónist years were controversial. Despite being hailed as champion of the poor and adored by the working classes, Evita, as she became known, was

Lessons Learned From Evita viewed with suspicion by the military and the upper classes. They believed she was using her public position to further personal aspirations. Her Legacy Described as humane and compassionate by some and a merciless megalomaniac by others, there is no doubt she held great influence in the hearts of the Argentinean working class. Eva was the moving force behind the women’s suffrage movement when she formed the Perónist Women’s Party. The labour movement supported Perón and she established the social welfare organisation, the Eva Perón Foundation (The Fundación de Ayuda Social Eva Perón) with monies donated from the government, business and labour to support the social welfare of children, orphans, the aged and poor. Eva organised political rallies and spent millions of dollars on the poor. Author Gabriela Sonntag in her biography Eva Peron describes Eva’s work through the Eva Perón Foundation as the major argument for those who saw Eva as a saint and that Perónism was the best route for Argentina. In 1951, Eva was nominated for vicepresidency but was forced to withdraw after pressure from the Army. Eva’s two most important speeches were delivered in August of that year when the crowd called for her ticket in the upcoming elections and when she declined the candidacy a week later. She died the following year, after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.

dare adventurous possibilities
Tania Usher, founder and publisher of dare, ’fell’ into the arms of entrepreneurship unexpectedly. Having lived overseas for 10 years working as a Marketing Communications Strategist, Tania left the action of corporate jet-setting and returned to Australia in 1998 to start her family. Within 5 years, she gave birth to three children, buried her firstborn, became the sole provider of her family, witnessed escalating credit card debt and served home repossession papers.
What doesn’t change in this whirlwind of life is the purposeful reason you’re here on this planet.”
Then one day it happened. Tania made a decision that transformed her life. While many suggested her actions were foolish, especially as the sole provider of her then 2 and 4 year old daughters, an unstinting faith in her own abilities propelled Tania to go into business for herself. She co-founded the Whole Woman Festival. An annual International Women’s Day Festival that brought together hundreds of women to share their wisdom on a host of topics. With no budget, Tania, together with a team of volunteers, took the Festival from a half-day celebration to hosting 14 sell-out events in nine days.
The tenacious Tania believes the only thing stopping entrepreneurs from reaching the success they crave, is their own self-doubt.
Why do you believe it’s important for people to explore a world of Adventurous Possibilities? In the often chaotic blend of daily life, it’s easy to get hijacked by day-to-day chores. Much time is spent juggling many balls, and the exciting dreams of youth become lost. Sadly, so too does the desire to explore the wondrous world around us, full of promise, fun and excitement. How do you incorporate daring into your everyday life? This fast-paced world in which we live changes daily. What was hot yesterday is ice cold today. Your childhood dreams become forgotten memories. What doesn’t change in this whirlwind of life is the purposeful reason you’re here on this planet. Eventful new chapters begin and end. Compelling goals come and go. Relationships fade or rekindle. Yet deep beneath all these external life experiences, is YOU. Each day, capture a moment, no matter how small, to explore the possibilities. What have been some of your most memorable adventures? My life started out in a very simple way. The eldest of two children, I grew up in an average Australian suburb in a life full of school, homework, netball, spending Sundays out on our boat, family card nights, growing up laughing and playing outside. I loved my life… until the shock separation of my parents when I was 13. This was the first of many experiences that propelled me down a path to discover the strength, courage and skills to become the very best of who I am, a determined survivor willing to explore a world of adventurous possibilities. At 15, while my mother was away on a holiday, I left school to begin work at a café. I knew that money was tight… there was no house, no boat, no family card nights and no money for school field trips. So I decided to make my own.
dare adventurous possibilities At 17, I had only one burning desire… to travel overseas. So with this as my goal, I embarked on several job changes until, at the age of 19, together with a girlfriend, we boarded the 24-hour flight from Perth to London. Returning home at 21, following a sixmonth stint backpacking through the continent… an amazing learning playground far better than any university degree… I knew in my heart that my future lay in Europe. So just prior to my 22nd birthday, I met a Dutchman who invited me to visit him in Amsterdam; I jumped at the chance. With less than $13 in the bank, I sold everything I owned
and purchased a one-way ticket to Amsterdam for what I anticipated would be a three-month trip. I returned to live in Australia 10 years later. I’ve since travelled to 39 countries, walked the Great Wall of China, scuba dived in the Maldives, driven up the California Coast, snowboarded in Japan, given birth to three gorgeous children, buried my baby boy, loved and lost, loved again, managed multi-million dollar budgets, built a business without a cent and always lived to the limit. And it all started with less than $13 and my most priceless asset, an “I CAN do it”, attitude.

dare to take action
Recently, I volunteered and gave a 1.5 hour presentation on tips and strategies to achieve work-life-balance to an enthusiastic group of migrant women taking part in a micro-business course. This was no mean feat, given my long-standing, almost pathological fear of public speaking! So this month, I challenge you to either volunteer for a worthwhile cause or have a go at facing a fear: • Volunteer your time, energy or experience to a worthy group in your community. • Offer to spend an hour or two with a family member or friend in need and give them a helping hand. • Think of something that you’re not too comfortable with – and stretch yourself to give it a go. Like our leaders who are ready to reach out and lend a hand, we dare you to push yourself beyond your comfort zone to make a positive difference for someone else. Remember − even giving one hour of your time can make a huge impact on someone else.

dare to change philosophy in both prosperous and challenging times? Change is a necessary precursor to growth and an inevitable part of life. We can either learn to flow with life and welcome change as a daring adventure, or waste precious time and energy resisting change in an attempt to maintain status quo. No matter how much you struggle, however, nothing ever stays the same and nor would you want it to. Imagine a life where at the beginning of every day, you already know the outcome? Boring! Ironically, challenging times call forth your internal warrior and when ‘enough is enough’ you have no choice but to change.
enormous rewards; others appear easier on the surface (the ‘quick fix’ being a classic case in point) but can often lead nowhere or even backwards in our growth and development. Unless you have clarity on ‘who’ it is you really are deep inside, ‘what’ you really stand for, ‘where’ the heck you want to play in life and, most importantly, ‘why’ it all matters to you; then you’re asking for trouble. Sure, you may kick a lot of goals and look successful on the surface, but more often than not, it will all feel like a hollow victory in the final analysis at a deeply personal level.
The most effective mechanism I’ve found to help sift through this universe of available choices, is the perspective that an engaging set of personal and professional values provides.”

dare
Our world is ever changing, so how do you embrace a deep-seated commitment to growing and evolving without becoming overwhelmed by every ‘new trend’ that’s begging attention? Becoming change-friendly involves that glorious function we all possess: the gift of ‘choice’. In every moment, a host of choices are available to you. Some are difficult to execute yet yield MAY 2012
How can embracing change improve leadership direction and build long-term advantage for businesses or individuals wishing to be heard in a noisy world? Smart businesses and leaders have always understood that change is the only constant. I’m not talking about change for change’s sake, but real change anchored by those clearly articulated values rocket-fuelled by a compelling vision. Granted,
dare to change the pace of change has sped up with the explosion of technology, yet it’s important to remember that people still deal with people. Authenticity is something you will never be able to manufacture with smoke and mirrors marketing. Even if your competitors appear to be running faster and further than you, my advice is to put semi-blinkers on, stick to your truth and confidently go about executing your plans. Tweak your plan as you go and aim for sustainable change that leads to positive growth: these are the businesses that stand the test of time, no matter how long it takes to get there. What does it mean to you personally to be a part of dare? For me, dare is an extension of the many channels available to communicate my message. I am deeply passionate about, and committed to, helping everyone become his or her own change agent and subsequently Dream Your Life, Live Your Dream. I love the quality of dare and the calibre of the contributors. I feel like I’ve found a second home here with a group of authentic and credible people, openly sharing positive life and business lessons for the greater good of all.

Jennie Brown is a speaker, author, mentor and property investor living in Brisbane, Australia. The author of Your Property Questions Answered; Jennie also coauthored the Australian bestseller Property Millionaire as well as Cracking The Success Code with Brian Tracy, due for international release in mid 2012. With a passion for helping people achieve their goals and attain financial freedom, Jennie travels the world, mentoring and educating others on how to live a more purposeful, extraordinary and inspired life of their dreams. Sharing the importance of a positive mindset, Jennie is passionate about facilitating positive, lasting life change, and inspiring her clients to be proactive in the development of the legacy they create. An avid traveller, Jennie enjoys vacationing around the world, ‘works’ from home, loves animals and supports a number of charities. What unique blend of wealth wisdom do you bring to the brand new Wealth Watch segment of dare? My parents were very poor when I was young, and I spent a lot of my early working years struggling and searching for what I thought wealth was – being a millionaire. Along the way, I realised that wealth is not just about money. It
incorporates so much more. That realisation has allowed me to see wealth appear in so many different ways and areas of my life and in the lives of others. It is these experiences – mine, and those of others − that I’ll be sharing with dare readers. Wealth is far greater than the amount of money you have in the bank or your list of assets. What proactive insights can we expect to see in Wealth Watch? Yes, wealth includes money, yet that’s only one element. Wealth is the freedom to do what you want, when you want, with whom you want, how you want. When I picture wealth, I see a positive and abundant bundle of many aspects, including time, health, experience, relationships, spirituality, philanthropy, success and business/ work/career. In Wealth Watch, I’ll be bringing my own unique blend and wealth of experience (pun intended!) to inspire, motivate, provoke and impact dare readers towards their own wealth aspirations. There will be NO excuses for not living a wealthy, fun and abundant life. MAY 2012

dare wealth watch How important is it to share strategies that enable readers to build a financial legacy for their families? Being wealthy is about being the best you can be. And to do that means going above and beyond the many boundaries you set for yourself. One of the best ways of doing this is to share what you know and support others to be the best they too can be. Wealth incorporates sharing success, knowledge and experience with as many people as possible and this is my commitment to dare readers. action
ac·tion n something done or accomplished; organized activity to achieve an objective; habitual or vigorous activity; energy; behavior or conduct; the most important or exciting work or activity in a specific field or area. Your actions delineate and define who you are. As do your inactions. in·ac·tion n idleness; inertia; failure to do something that should be done; lack of action or activity Knowing what action to take is not enough. You can read every feature in dare and gain valuable knowledge from our editors and special guests, yet this information alone will NOT change your life. However, taking just ONE suggested action will propel you on a journey that will change the course of your life. Actions, as well as inactions, reflect your true commitments to the world. Have you ever told yourself or others that you’re committed to getting fit? Yet after a few early morning jogs, you give up. In this instance, your actions indicate that getting fit is NOT a true commitment. Avoid the mental trap of believing extraordinarily successful people have some exceptional gift that you don’t possess. The only difference between you and them is action vs inaction. When you get yourself into action, your world will never look the same. Make the decision TODAY to be a person of action. Take that first step right now... ...I dare you.
