Going that extra mile...

The festive season is fast approaching and thoughts are turning to buying gifts for loved ones and the annual Christmas extravaganza. For some, this is a wonderful time buying presents for your family and friends; for others it is a nightmare of crowded shops and the dread of struggling to carry bags full of gifts. Whether you love or hate the whole experience, Christmas shopping can be made a pleasurable experience by booking Shan Wales Tours who shall take the travel strain.
Bath Christmas Shopping by Tanya Lynch
For most people it’s the shopping experience itself that is a pleasure. After all, picking out gifts is enjoyable. But transportation always causes headaches. It is virtually impossible to park the car close to the shops at Christmas time. It can be stressful...
Style Life The solution is to hire Shan’s luxury car to zip you around town, door-to-door to whatever shops you choose. Shan’s car is the height of luxury and comfort, with the added bonus that she will help you with your bags and deliver you back home with total ease. For this magical and festive experience it was a real pleasure to book Shan for such a fun shopping trip. We were picked up at 9am from Penarth and driven in sheer comfort to the quaint streets of Bath. Shan is such good company and very knowledgable about places and venues which she happily shares with you along your trip. Once in Bath, it was evident that the city was transformed into a Christmas shopper’s haven. There was a festive magic around the city and the majority of boutiques had already dressed their shop windows with

Christmas decorations. We shopped and had posh coffees with pastries in The Society Cafe. We must have spent about 3 hours shopping and once ready Shan picked us up in a central location to take our bags and drive us to our next destination. Situated just 5 minutes away, was one of the most exquisite hotels - The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa – which was the perfect place for us to visit once we were all shopped out. After a relaxing couple of hours in the luxury spa which included a stunning swimming pool, sauna, steam room and hot tubs. We went for a delightful afternoon tea complimented with a glass of champagne. This afternoon tea was just perfect offering an eclectic mix of flavours both sweet and savoury. The tea menu was delightful with a wonderful selection of teas from across the globe. All in all a truly magical experience to start the festive period and all because we had our very own chauffeur who arranged and advised us throughout the trip to take the stress away and let us enjoy our day. Shan also provides gift vouchers if you want to give a gift that delights well after the festive season ! 8

Penarth based estate agent ACJ Properties has celebrated 23 years of service in the residential sector by re-branding its sales department. Operating under the new name, Jones Estates, the sales division will continue to offer a comprehensive sales management service to clients across Penarth, Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan.
By creating a distinctive identity for the sales department, the company hopes to clearly differentiate between its sales and lettings divisions, which will still be managed under the ACJ Properties umbrella.
Sellers who list their property with Jones Estates can benefit from realistic property valuations, premium listings on rightmove. co.uk and onthemarket.com, immediate feedback on viewings and free buy-to-let advice. As a celebration of their re-brand this month, Jones Estates are offering to pay the legal fees of the first 12 vendors who sign up.
Established in 1993, ACJ Properties took over management of a portfolio of luxury apartments on Penarth seafront and has grown to be a leading letting agency in South Wales.
Please do visit us at our newly refurbished offices where your property for sale can be seen in dynamic backlit displays and where our team will be more than happy to meet you.
The company now manages the lettings of nearly 500 properties within Cardiff and The Vale, with Jones Estates handling sales throughout Penarth, Cardiff Bay, Dinas Powys, Llandough, Sully and Barry.
Are you looking to sell a property in South Wales? Register with Jones Estates and you could have your legal fees paid for you. Visit www.acjproperties.com today and register online to receive a free valuation for your property. Alternatively, call 029 20 41 51 61 to speak to a dedicated agent.

I wanted to visit a diverse range of properties from Coast to Country in and around the Penarth catchment area. All four properties were unique and delightful in their own way. Firstly I saw a 3 bedroom terrace house on Paget Terrace with stunning views across Penarth Marina. It’s quite a scene to take in. One could just sit and watch the world go by whatever the weather. The property was spread over 3 floors. Fabulous character features and huge potential to refurbish for a professional couple or family. Onwards to Glebe Street to look at another 3 bedroom terrace house. This was a gem of a house. Real homely feel to it. Perfect for any first time buyer. Ready to move in and just nest. All the refurbishment work had been done. A nice little surprise for me was finding it had a basement. I’m not sure what’s so exciting about such a space but I always wonder what would you do with it? Cinema? Playroom? Work office or studio? Library? Wine cellar? The ideas are endless.
Home Life GLYNNE TOWER
From Glebe Street we went from the town centre over to Glynne Tower which was nicely positioned off Marine Parade – yes ‘Ouch’ is what I thought when I heard this street name. But saying that it wasn’t in the million pound range as I expected it to be. This 3 bedroom apartment has fabulous channel views and the space was really practical for a couple looking to downsize. Last but not least we left the coastal path and drove out of the town and to the quaint little village of St Michael le Pit. It was my first time to visit this romantic haven. It’s pure countryside and only a couple of miles out of town. Perfect family home for those looking to get some country space and yet have the amenities of town and city life. This property certainly has
the X factor! From the moment I stepped through the front door I just kept saying wow! Designed by the architect owner, it’s pretty obvious that time and consideration has been spent on providing a home for a busy and expanding family. The colour palette in each room was faultless. I think it’s best I let the photos speak the 1000 words you would need to showcase this perfect family residence.....

Community minded We are proud to say that we have once again supported a number of local charities and organisations this year, donating money and our time to groups such as PODS, Penarth Hockey Club, Rugby Club, The Old Pens, Penarth Bowls Club, Marie Curie, All Saints Church, St Augustines Church, Cogan Coronation FC and Save the Children. We love Penarth and always take a lot of pleasure in helping out where we can.
The future With the economic forecast still unclear, we do not expect next year to be wildly different. The demand for property locally will still be high, and the main issues will be surrounding the supply of new property onto the market. This imbalance continues to drive up prices, with lenders remaining circumspect and cautious with their values.
Here’s to 2015, and a positive and forward thinking 2016!
opportunity to reflect on what has been a mixed but very busy year for us and the property market in Penarth. On the back of a lacklustre end to 2014, the market never seemed to get going this year, but having said that, instructions and sales are roughly level. Demand has certainly increased and maybe that is why supply appears on the low side. Many vendors are not willing to market their property until they have found the next one, and this is having a knock-on effect, creating somewhat of a stalemate in certain
Improved service As reported earlier in the year, Charles Wood joined the business and we are now able to offer a wider range of surveys and valuations including Homebuyer reports. We have made a good start with regular enquiries coming through. Customers are really appreciating the fact that we can survey the property and talk them through the findings, rather than just issuing them a copy of the report and moving on to the next one. We can carry out surveys across South Wales, so feel free to give us a call to discuss your requirements.

In each issue a Griffin Books customer shares their favourite reads. Helena (pictured) recommends the following: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by JK Rowling When I read it I could not stop because I had got sucked into Harry Potter world and it was as if I was actually there. Harry does some really naughty things with his friends Ron and Hermione, but saves the school and the whole magic world. Hetty Feather by Jacqueline Wilson A sad tale and it’s hard to believe it could happen in real life but yes, foundling children are real. If you can handle books that almost make you cry this one’s for you. Interesting, sad and brilliant. First Term at Malory Towers by Enid Blyton Best Book Ever! Happy, cheerful – but watch out, Darrell has a temper. She tries her best not to lose it, but she does. How badly does she lose it? Find out by reading it. It was so good I read the other 5, yes there are 6 of them. All titles mentioned are available from Griffin Books (www.griffinbooks.co.uk). Penarth View

The 5 best pubs to visit in Penarth this winter
Winter can be a hard time of year to decide what to do or where to go right? So we’ve put together our 5 favourite pubs in Penarth that we love to visit, and put them into categories we think suits them best. by Charlotte Morgan
Best pub for food:
Best pub for families:
The New Pilot – Queen’s Rd
The Captains Wife – Beach Rd
The New Pilot re-opened its doors as part of the knife and fork chain in 2012, and since then has gone on to win various Michelin Star awards and was featured in their 2013 guide. The reopening was highly anticipated and fully met its expectations. The new décor is laid out in a rustic and funky theme, appealing to all ages – however even after its transformation the New Pilot has also still remained a hearty pub serving both traditional dishes and gastronomical delights. Presentation of food that is 10/10 its hard not to give this pub a visit this winter!
Part of the popular chain ‘Vintage Inns’ The Captains Wife is the perfect place to eat this winter with the family. With stunning views over to Sully Island, and the history the restaurant carries is all very appealing for guests. With a full children and adult menu – as well as lunch, dinner, steak night and a range of hand carved meats for Sunday lunch it’s the perfect winter warmer after a brisk walk. The Captains Wife also has a very warm and cosy feel to it, a place you can totally feel at home.

Taste of Penarth
Best pub for beer:
The best pub for live music:
The best pub for tradition:
The Golden Lion - Glebe St
The Albion – Glebe St
The St Fagans Pub – Glebe St
The Golden Lion has to be one of the friendliest pubs - always a great local crowd who obviously love the wide selection of real ales. It’s a cosy venue during the Winter months and in the Summer there is a great garden with artificial grass and the walls have been painted with pictures of Penarth Pier. The best sport is shown on multiple screens and complimented with a good jukebox. The best thing about this place is the staff who are always friendly and quick to serve you. Oh and the food on a Sunday is superb!
With it’s very own website (www.gigall.co.uk) The Albion is one of the best pubs in Penarth for live music. With live bands playing every Saturday night, open mic Wednesdays, music quiz Thursdays and ukulele night every other Monday – the pub lives for music and entertaining it’s visitors. All of the bands play a variety of music and popular songs, guaranteed to suit all ages young and old. Also there’s room for a bop or two… The Albion certainly does not disappoint!
The St Fagans pub is one of the most central and iconic pubs in Penarth, on the corner of the high street; The St Fagans is the pinnacle of community life in Penarth. One of the few pubs that is built up mainly of regulars, but not to worry because even if you aren’t a regular face they welcome you in with open arms. The St Fagans also offers the historic feel of a traditional pub with perfectly combined modern features such as an electronic jukebox and a few TV’s for sport. Certainly a pub you feel at home in. What would a typical day in your life involve? Every day is so different for me as I don’t just have a 9 to 5 life I have four Jobs that are complete different in some ways but are the same as it’s all about making life better for others. JinFit where I get to do one of my biggest passions which is keeping people fit and happy. Jin’s Paleo Treats where I bake health treats for people and send them all over the UK. The Centre where I run my fitness classes and also rent out the spaces to some amazing fitness and wellness ladies. Finally I work in the NHS in the operating theatres 3 days a week which I love and have been there for 10 years. So a typical day for me is eventful and extremely satisfying. How has Penarth changed over the years? In my eyes Penarth hasn’t changed much over the years it has just had a face lift. It still has the same faces and still holds my heart.
What do you love most about the Penarth? The thing I love most about Penarth is the beauty of it from the parks to the sea front there is nothing nicer than a stroll down to Penarth beach on a beautiful day. Favourite gems of Penarth? I have to say the view from the little park by Osborne House that overlooks the Bristol channel is my favourite gem and my secret place. www.jinfit.co.uk

Interview with Xavier Rush, the former Cardiff Blues and All Blacks player. By: Dyfri Owen - Director of PPPphysio, Physio to Cardiff RFC and Football Association of Wales So how does a New Zealand International rugby player end up living in Penarth? Kiwis like to be near the sea and ideally need to be able to see the water. Gary Powell, a friend and fellow Cardiff Blues player lived in Penarth. I loved his house with it’s view of the bay so I bought in the same street. How did you get in to rugby? I was a very high spirited boy. My mother told my father that he was going to have to do something to sort me out so he took me down to the local rugby club. In my first game I scored 2 tries and made a great impression and rugby just seemed to suit me.... it fitted. I loved rugby training and from the age of 5 I had to ride my bike 8km to and from Manurewa Rugby Club twice a week. 52
Penarth View
Did you play in school? Ahh yes. I attended Sacred Heart College. It was the same school that former All Black captain Sean Fitzpatrick went to. The school was set up by the Marist Brothers and it was a Catholic school. The Marist Brothers had 2 loves in life. They loved God and rugby but it wasn’t known which they loved most!! It’s obvious you were good at rugby in school but did you succeed academically? In a word, No. I was asked to leave school. I had a really good physical work ethic but I didn’t enjoy my studies. I have always had a real interest in property and construction so I became a builders apprentice when I was 17.
How did you become a professional rugby player then? I had played for Auckland U15, Auckland Schools, New Zealand Schools and I captained New Zealand U19 and U21, who were known as the Colts. In January 1997 I got a phone call from the then coach of the Auckland Blues, a certain Graham Henry. This was on a Tuesday and he said, what are you up to Friday? I said not much, and he said good, come with the Auckland Blues on a tour of the UK, France and South Africa. This team was full of current All Blacks including the Captain Zinzan Brooke. I went onto play 180 games for Auckland and the Auckland Blues, 163 games for the cardiff Blues and managed 8 caps for the All Blacks.
When did you decide to call it a day? When I heard that they were going to be putting a 4G artificial pitch down I thought that would be the end of me. My body was starting to complain a bit and my game suited a slow, wet, heavy pitch! So you love living in Penarth because it’s by the sea. What else do you like about Penarth? Penarth has some of the best restaurants in Cardiff. I love Pier 64 and El Puerto and Bar44 is great for a lazy pint of red wine! I love the breakfast box from Lush’s butchers and the
people in Johnsons dry cleaners really look after me! They also do a great Roybos tea in the Waterloo Tea Gardens. Will you stay in Penarth? I obviously miss my family. I have 7 nieces and nephews in NZ. My family are great though and whenever we catch up it’s like we’ve never been apart. I’m also really looking forward to the youngsters coming over on theie O.E (overseas experience) to stay with their uncle in Penarth when they’re old enough. I have a young family now in Wales. I have some really good friends here and I love the Welsh people too. They have a great sense of humour and they can certainly take the micky out of people really well and what I also really like is how you guys can take the mickey out of yourselves. It took me a while to learn how to deal with this Welsh sense of humour but I feel like a much better person for it. When I last went back to NZ I actually felt like I started to miss Wales after 3 weeks. I do miss NZ in January and February here though as it’s summer over there! So now you’ve retired from rugby, what are you doing? Away from rugby, I like to buy and renovate property. My background in building and construction obviously comes in really handy there. My first big job was the renovation of Albert Rd Methodist Church. I’m really proud of that one and in fact one of the residents has told me that it is the best place he has ever
Lifestyle
How did you end up signing for the Cardiff Blues? I was on tour in South Africa and there were a few people from the Cardiff Blues who were out there to meet rugby players they could potentially sign. I met Bob Norster, Gareth Edwards and Dai Young. Bob Norster said, Xavier, we would love you to come and play for the Cardiff Blues, have you got a girlfriend? We can get you a girlfriend! There was an instant connection which I think is important. I had wanted to travel with rugby and had thought of Europe or Japan. I was only 28 so I thought I still had too much to offer for Japan and I couldn’t speak French. I always like to have a say on the pitch in training and in matches so I didn’t think I would get on very well in France. I hadn’t really connected with the English clubs I had spoken to so I signed for the Cardiff Blues. I ended up playing 163 times for the Blues.
lived. Simon Baston and I actually won an award for that project too. Google it for me to see which award it was we won and then you can let me know!! I also do business development for SHS Integrated Services which specialise in scaffolding, insulation and cladding. I instantly liked the people involved. They are passionate about the company, they certainly have the ability and expertise to expand further. You mentioned the Rugby World Cup. How did you think the All Blacks did and did you enjoy it? I loved every minute of it and obviously I’m delighted we won. People were worried about how we were doing in the pool stages but behind the scenes the coaches and the players were working hard and then with 3 weeks to Penarth View

skill levels in the past 4 years. Their attack is better than their defence. Do you still watch the Cardiff Blues? I go to every home game. I am also president of the Blues 100 club. This is extremely important to me. When you retire from professional sport it can be the hardest time of your life. Whilst you’re playing you have a purpose and goals and when that goes it can be quite scary. I want to build up a network, all over the world to support former professional rugby players in their retirement.
go we start to ease off. This allows the players to freshen up and peak at the right time in the tournament. I’ve been really impressed with Steve Hansen. He has really instilled the fun aspect in the squad and our players enjoy. They have as much fun off the field as they do playing!! It can’t be all work and no enjoyment. Whats the point of getting to the destination if you haven’t enjoyed the journey. Which becomes the emotional glue that tightens and bonds the team. Did you expect to win the World Cup? Yes. Definately. I think all the other nations in the world are focussing on fitness, conditioning and defence. The All Blacks are the only country who have really focussed on improving their 54

Do you miss playing rugby? I played professionally from the age of 19 to 35 which is a long career in rugby and I enjoyed every single minute. However, from the moment I retired, I’ve never looked back. Do you see yourself as a coach one day? I’ve coached for 3 seasons. I went back to Auckland to coach for 2 years and then I spent a year back at Cardiff with Phil Davies. I’ve done my level 3 coaching badges but to be honest at this stage I am not interested in coaching. I would enjoy coaching kids and really like to see them improve. Do you think Danny Wilson is the right man for the job at the Cardiff Blues? Yes I do. He has a real tough job. He needs time and it will take him 3 years to build his own team and before
there will be considerable improvement. Do you have hobbies? I like to play golf quite regularly. I also play a bit of tennis. Are you a member of a tennis club in Penarth? I play for the Winsor Lawn Tennis Club. If you’re any good you could be my doubles partner! I once played an exibition match and my partner was Martina Navratilova. We played against Carlos Spencer and Monica Seles. We won 6-2. Finally, I’ve just started playing Vets football and I’ve signed for Cardiff Corries. Do you think you’ll play vets rugby? I was asked to go to Dubai to play in their 7’s tournament and I accepted but then turned it down. I feel really fortunate that my body coped with 18 years as a professional player with over 400 first class games so I don’t want to risk a serious injury or to cause more damage to my body now. So we won’t be seeing you running out on Boxing Day for The Old Pens or Penarth RFC for their traditional festive match then? I will follow the path of my older, wiser and better looking former team mate Martyn Williams by politely declining any such offer! By Dyfri Owen

St Cyres School’s YouTube hit Teachers at St Cyres School aka Wrong Direction have produced a Christmas music video to raise money for Children in Need. The five comedy band members dressed up as Santa and also wore some rather lovely Christmas jumpers! The video has raised over a thousand pounds through pupil donations in school and through their Just Giving page. To watch the video and donate YouTube search ‘St Cyres – Children in Need’.

PENARTH DENTAL PRACTICE AND FACIAL AESTHETICS
Looking back on 2015
Become a new you
The Polka Dot Door
What a momentous year it’s been – It was 25 years ago this year I qualified as a dentist. It’s been an absolute pleasure to have met so many clients during this time and made a number of new friends whilst being a dentist and owner here @ Smile Studio. I was very proud recently too to be nominated for the Best Non-surgical facial aesthetics Myface Mybody award, none of which would of been possible without your support and belief in me, so many thanks go to all those colleagues and clients who voted for me. We would also like to welcome our new dentist, Lisa Rees who joined us in September, which now also means we are open every Thursday evening now until 7.30pm.
Become was set up by Janine with the intention of bringing fitness and wellness to busy women in the area. Everyone has the right to feel beautiful from the inside out and Become believes that we have all of the tools to do that for you.
The Polka Dot Door provides a one-stop shop for customers and their entire gift shopping needs. Located in the Windsor Arcade, this boutique gift shop is very proud to be entering their third Christmas, once again stocking only the latest and quirkiest products available on the high street.

premises and mourners are welcome at any time to pay their respects. Owner Joan Paines says: “We are always available to help families and we can provide all the necessary services such as organising memorial services. There is a lot to think about obviously and our aim is to help you at all times and share your burden. As we are an independent, family-run
business, we offer a personal service where we like to think of ourselves as more than just a funeral service, but more of a friend to the family.” We can also help you plan your own arrangements. It’s a subject you might not care to think too deeply on, but careful thought can provide peace of mind.
