Hello... It’s been a fabulous Spring season at Penarth View HQ, we hope you have had fun too? Penarth was a hub of activity, with cool events such as Picnic Penarth providing us with yummy food, drink and entertainment. Plus it’s been a delight meeting local residents opening their new businesses, including Glass By Design and The Crepe Escape – it’s always exciting when local entrepreneurs launch new brands in town. Our Summer issue is all about festival fever, travel and getting fit especially as our annual Summer Festival starts on 7th through to the 17th July. This year there is a Roald Dahl theme with creative zones dotted across the town – see page 56 for a summary of the activities. Style columnist Claire Jacklin updates us on what’s been happening in her busy world of fashion on page 10. Plus I had the pleasure of staying in a very cool and contemporary boutique hotel in lovely Llandudno, my Coast to Coast review on page 30 tells you all about my fabulous North Wales adventure.

As always a huge thanks to all our clients, local businesses and of course you our readers for supporting Penarth View. The Perks of being a Co-Worker Co-working is growing ever more popular amongst the selfemployed, freelancers and oneman-bands of the business world. There are currently more than 400 times more co-working spaces than this time 3 years ago. But what is it about this working environment that is pulling these individuals away from their home offices and into the world of co-working? People like to be part of a community. Working from home can often be isolating. You lack routine and regular social interaction. Leaving the house to go to work restores a work-life balance that is vital for your productivity levels and more importantly your mental wellbeing. When you join a co-working space you instantly become part of a living, breathing community – “me” becomes “we”! You are no longer at home
Style Life alone, with just the cat for company. You are out there, immersed, interacting and learning from your fellow co-workers. The great thing about co-working communities is that they are made up of talented individuals with their own unique skills and interests. Need help updating your webpage? Stuck on a design for your logo? Chances are you will be working near someone who can help you, or at least refer you to a trusted person they have used themselves. Have you ever noticed that co-workers always seem to be in the know? If there’s a networking event or local award show, co-workers will always share this information with one another because they love to see each other thrive and succeed.
Working for yourself can be great, but there can also be scary daunting times for a small business owner. Working in a co-working community, you are going to be surrounded by people who have faced similar challenges - and survived them. Sharing solutions to daily problems and being able to ask for advice from a supportive group of people will help your business stride from strength to strength. In Tec Marina, we have dedicated room for our co-workers. These wonderfully diverse and talented people are a key part of our Tec Marina community. You’ll often see them sharing ideas and collaborating on projects. They are able to expand their network through meeting new people and attending our regular Tec Marina
events. They enjoy working from a creative space that provides their business with the perfect environment to bloom. The whole idea of co-working is to bring bright creative, people together and let the ideas collide, and that is exactly what is happening in Tec Marina! - Written by Natalie Rowley

We have enjoyed the challenges of growing our business eden landscapes in the last couple of years (well, mostly!). From our humble beginnings in Garden construction and design, we are now the proud owners of our own Landscape and Garden Buildings retail centre. Last Winter was spent developing the new show area for our collection of sheds, summerhouses and outdoor buildings. This was the next step in our expansion, following on from the development of our Landscaping centre and operating yard at Pugh’s Garden Village, Wenvoe in 2014.
Growth in Eden
It has always been our aim to create an inspirational shopping area, full of interesting garden products and materials. It is still a work in progress, and we are buzzing with plans an ideas for the future. The “Boulevard de Sheds” as it’s been nicknamed, has been busy this Spring, and our efforts are beginning to bear fruit. When speaking to our customers, it has been fascinating to learn how many of them intend to use our sheds to run a small business, or as a dedicated hobby room. All without the need to rent space away from their home. Whether
We as small business owners ourselves we are only too aware of how the overheads and costs involved in running your own business can really mount up. By operating your business from a building in the garden then running costs can be slashed. Electricity and broadband can be easily added and with the continuing development of the functionality of the internet, the world really is your oyster. All this from a cosy wooden building at the bottom of your garden. The Great British Sewing Bee, Pottery Throw Down, and other similar programmes have inspired people wishing to find an escape from the rat race. It’s been brilliant to chat with people taking up new hobbies and finding things to do in their spare time, that bring them back in touch with traditional skills and crafts, from a time when life wasn’t so busy. The potting shed can be a sewing room, the summerhouse an art studio, or our quirky Dutch barn the perfect thinking space to start your creative writing. With this in mind we have decided to use our show sheds creatively, and support our local creative community by hosting are very own

coast to coast Each issue we will be setting off on our travels to enjoy a coastal escape, this time we travelled North along the A470 to Llandudno and stayed at the rather exquisite Escape Boutique B&B. The location: Llandudno – by far the most elegant of the North Wales seaside resorts. A proud Victorian town with a sweeping sandy bay is sheltered by two great limestone hills, Great Orme and Little Orme. The venue: Escape Boutique B&B – this is a contemporary and welcoming boutique hotel that offers exclusive, stylish and luxurious accommodation.
Escape Boutique B&B
What’s so special: This very grand Victorian abode is perfectly perched against the Great Orme. It has amazing views and scenery from the front of the hotel. The wow factor was when we opened the curtains and saw the sea and mountains. Lovely decor throughout and furnished to a high standard. The staff were friendly and the breakfasts had a nice Welsh twist to them with lots of choice on offer. The location is perfect for the town and many recommendations for restaurants were offered,
Healthy Life
Activities: Take a walk up the Great Orme or catch a Tram Ride, fun times to be had at Llandudno Ski Centre, pop into the town for some retail therapy and just over the esturary visit Conwy Castle. If you’re feeling really adventurous there is always Snowdon to climb or the uber cool www.zipworld.co.uk in Bethesda Overview: Perfect for a staycation, a little bit of luxury if you’re off for a weekend of adventure through the North Wales hills. Little Gem: Bryn Williams Restaurant is a delightful treat!! Testimonial: A good friend and local Penarth resident Bethan Elfyn recently stayed at Escape and this is what she had to say: “Alice in Wonderland has strong connections with Llandudno and this hotel was certainly an experience down the rabbit hole! On the outside the Escape looks like one of many grand Victorian houses, perched on the Llandudno hills, but inside, the sleek décor transports the building to an ultra-modern, minimalist haven from the bitter cold of the seafront but with a psychedelic twist. I was visiting the North Wales coast over Easter, a whistle-stop tour calling at train destinations across the top of North Wales, and Llandudno’s pier, sea front and quaint town had been top of the list. Sadly the plan was only scuppered
by the Welsh weather and I was particularly glad of the warmth and comfort of the Escape’s welcome. I was in Room 7 the showpiece was a hovering bed, levitating above a selection of remote controlled rainbow of lights, complemented by the expanse of the en-suite bathroom, and shower. Catching an imminent train meant I probably didn’t make the most of the homemade, locally sourced breakfast in the morning – I’d certainly like to take my time to ‘find myself’ next time at the Escape! ”

GET FIT PENARTH South Wales Paddle Boarding Club is supported by the council run White Water Centre, Puravida Boardriders and Brawd/Missfit Health and Fitness. Jim from Puravida - “When photographer Dave White asked me if I could show him a few of the local spots we take out new paddlers and have a cruise ourselves, I thought, well that’s easy! It’s all right on our doorstep, in fact it’s right on the doorstep of the entire population of Cardiff and the surrounding coastal towns like Penarth and Barry really. The entire Coast of South Wales has endless spots to get in for either a sheltered paddle or the perfect introduction into the waves. Locally for us, participation is the key and our main focus is to get new people into the sport and to make it as fun and easy as possible! From there some people just like to cruise while others are keen to get in the surf! The beauty is you can make it what you want and there is a really buzzing scene of new paddlers growing all the time”
The entire Coast of South Wales has endless
spots to get in for either a sheltered paddle or the perfect introduction into the waves.
Did you know that the tide is always in at Cardiff Bay? Well since the Barrage went in a long time ago now, it has created the perfect venue to learn to SUP or cruise the 2 major rivers that run all the way from the Valleys out to the Bay. Cardiff White Water Centre is the local base
Then there is Penarth where the Puravida shop is based. With high cliffs our seaside town has a really well sheltered beach front with a big pier and promenade all the way along. At high tide on a calm day it’s a great spot to paddle and the local riders often train here for a bit of coastal paddling and to take some more experienced paddlers out for a different view! There is a strong current to be aware of and it’s bumpy in rougher weather……being the coast it’s definitely a place to paddle with others as you get more experienced and always wear a leash! A little further along the coast is Barry, if it’s flat water your after then South Wales SUP Club run ad-hoc sessions out of Barry Community Water Activity Centre BCWAC from the newly regenerated No 1 dock in Barry. Here complete beginners can practice in a safe environment and it’s a nice place to go if its too windy on the coast. By: Dyfri Owen - Director of PPP physio Gary, we have known each other for 16 years now as you were a prop for Cardiff RFC when I was their U21 physio. Where are you from originally and talk me through your rugby career? I’m from Treorchy and I started playing for Treherbert from the age of 6 until I went to Llandovery to study my A-levels aged 16. I also played for Wales at every age group. Richmond RFC offered me a contract at 18 and that coincided with me going to Brunel University in London to study Sports Science. Richmond were then in the top flight of English rugby and they had some great Welsh players in their squad like Alan Bateman, Andy Moore, John Davies, Barry Williams and Scott and Craig Quinell. Can you remember your first start as a pro player? Yes, it was against Northampton at the
Healthy Life
Interview with former
Madejski Stadium in Reading, our home ground. At 19 years old I was up-against the South African 1995 Rugby World Cup winner Garry Pagel on the loosehead (a complete beast of a man) on that occasion I learnt lots. Where did you go next then? I signed for Cardiff RFC in 1999 and that’s when I first met you! British Lion Dai Young was also there in my position so he was a great mentor and roll-model. I was at Cardiff RFC for 4 seasons and then I moved to the Leeds Tykes under Phil Davies. They had a solid team with a good work ethic and a great bunch of players and staff too. I then went on to sign for Gloucester. They have an extremely passionate fans who really follow every game. The home games at Kingsholm where absolutely packed. It’s an amazing place to play rugby. I was there for 2 years in total and in that time we won the Challenge Cup beating London Irish in the final. Dai Young was then head coach at Cardiff Blues so I signed for the region and they had just moved to Cardiff City Stadium. I really enjoyed playing my rugby in Wales again. I had 4 good years but unfortunately in 2010 I ruptured my Achilles against Leinster and that brought to an end my professional career. You’ve lived in Penarth for ages now, how did you end up here? Back in 2000 I was looking to buy my first property in or near to Cardiff. The 38

lofts above Windsor Arcade really caught my eye and I ending up buying one. Once you get used to everything Penarth has it’s very difficult to find anywhere to compare it to. What do you like best about living in Penarth? I love everything about the place. There seems to be a good mix of pubs, restaurants, coffee shops, the list goes on and on... You can also walk everywhere, to the beach, the pier, clifftops and across the barrage. I have 2 children Isabella and Freddie and it’s a great place to raise a family. I feel extremely lucky to have so much on our doorstep. We love walking our dog Tilly around Cosmeston. My wife Sophie works in Penarth as a teacher at Headlands school. We also have a large circle of friends who live here who all have children of a similar age. You mentioned you like eating and drinking. Where are your favourite places? The Pilot is our local and they do a really good pint of Peroni and I really like their ham egg and chips. The Golden Lion is always busy and it has a great atmosphere. El Puerto is a must for king prawns and steak and I like everything in Bar 44. As a family, we like to go to Lush’s butcher on a Saturday morning to buy chipolatas and we get fresh bread from Brutons bakery and then go home for some sandwiches. You also can’t beat Lushies minted lamb chops. As a family we also love popping into Hamptons for their great
What did you do with yourself after you retired from pro rugby? If I’m honest retiring from being a professional rugby player was a difficult period in my life and the transition took some time to adjust to. The loss of the camaraderie of the boys and the routine of training in the week and a game on the weekend. I spent some time on property development projects and I also co-invented a product call Pumppal which was a device that helps you fill your vehicle with fuel hands free, ideal for HGV drivers, people with large fuel tanks and people with hand disabilities. I got quite into biking - road and mountain but being an ex-prop I’m not quite physically designed for either. Not playing professional rugby also allowed me to fulfil my love of skiing and as a family we have driven to Chamonix for skiing holidays. And you also have a relatively new business. Yes, in June 2015 myself and my business partner and life-long friend Phil James set up Specialist Cars UK Ltd. We are both equally passionate about cars, we both had separate car business’s and we decided to join forces. We keep between 20 and 30 cars in stock at our indoor showroom just off Ocean Way in Cardiff. We specialise in sports and prestige
cars. We always have something different in stock. We also provide a car sourcing service for clients with particular requirements; we offer a brokerage service to sell cars on behalf of clients along with a range of competitive finance packages. We also buy prestige, sports cars and classic cars direct from the owners. The business has been built up through friends and family and word of mouth and we plan to keep our customers by providing a really high quality service. We want to make buying a quality car an easy and stress free experience. Have you ever fancied getting in to coaching? It wasn’t something I was planning on doing but when Freddie joined the U6’s I kind of fell into the role. So now myself and James Thatcher are the proud coaches of the Penarth RFC U6’s. It was actually really daunting at the beginning trying to entertain loads of kids with their parents watching. I soon got to really enjoy it though and we are hoping to produce some fine Penarthian talent for the Wales International teams of the future. I know you’ve recently played a bit of rugby again. How did that come about? I was taking my son Freddie to Penarth RFC to play for their under 6’s. Mike Claire asked me if I would play for their seconds against the Old Pens. I initially said no, it had been 6 years and I wasn’t sure that physically I could play. But Freddie was quite adamant he wanted to watch me so I

decided I would give it a go. It was a surreal experience being in a changing shed at the end of the pitch amongst a group of men I had never really met before, but as soon as I pulled my boots on it felt right. I played number 8 and managed to get across the line for a try. I absolutely loved it and it was really nice to be playing rugby for a bit of fun. The beauty of rugby is you can go into any rugby club in the world and come out with a new group of friends. I’m good friends with Lee Jarvis who is head coach of Championship side Merthyr Tydfil RFC. He heard I’d played and gave me a call to come up. They had a good squad and were looking to gain promotion to the Principality Premiership. I’d enjoyed that game so much I thought why not. I’m constantly telling my kids that anything is possible so from there I became a Merthyr RFC player and we have just gained promotion to the Premiership. Penarth View

Cardiff Safe Deposit is a privately owned safe deposit service. In response to the banks’ closure of safe deposit boxes it recently opened in central Cardiff to accommodate and secure personal or business valuables.
With so many small business owners in Penarth, I increasingly worry about how vulnerable they are to hacking or loss of data they control. It’s not just big businesses that are under threat. In fact, SMEs are seen as a much easier target than big multinational companies who have checks in place to ensure that their data is safe. While you might not think your data is valuable, it almost certainly is to someone. For companies whose data is stolen, the costs are potentially huge in terms of rectifying the breach and repairing reputational damage. The average British business affected by hacking loses abo £4,000 and two thirds of all cyber attacks are on businesses with 11-100 employees.
With competitive prices, convenient opening hours (including Saturday) and no need to book, our service is here to get you back on the road in no time. Based on Station Road, we’re conveniently located near Penarth town shops and Penarth train station. We offer a wide range of budget, mid-range and premium tyres, and we also stock wiper blades, bulbs and batteries. To save you the time and hassle of checking your tyres yourself, we also offer a FREE tyre check. Simply pop in and we’ll be at your service! The Portable Veblen by Elizabeth McKenzie Set in Palo Alto with an optimistic heroine, who looks for life advice from her resident grey squirrel, this novel covers Veblen’s relationship with her fiancé Paul, family dynamics, and a wide range of modern issues. Deservedly shortlisted for the Bailey’s Women’s Prize for Fiction. Used to Be by Elizabeth Baines - This fascinating collection by a very fine short story writer looks at the what-if’s in life: memory, choices and the untold stories behind what we see. Full of excellent observations and well worth your time. The Finding of Martha Lost by Caroline Wallace - Abandoned as a baby, Martha waits in Liverpool Lime Street’s lost property office, until one day she starts receiving letters prompting her to solve her own mystery. Martha is an endearing main character and the writing fizzles with magic, humour and warmth from the very beginning. All titles mentioned are available from Griffin Books (griffinbooks.co.uk).

However this year’s programme of events is even better and contains a wide variety of activities including, live music, exhibitions, drama, cinema, theatre, community interest, the Holiday Ball and many other interesting community events. All these truly wonderful events could not take place without the strong community spirit that exists in Penarth and our wonderful organisations that add such variety to the programme. The Summer Festival Programme will also have a stronger online
Lifestyle presence this year but printed copies will be made available. An interactive map is being developed to highlight the events and activities taking place on Carnival Day. Carnival Day on 16th July has so much to offer, the sunshine has been booked and many activities have been arranged for the day. We’re really excited to inform you that Carnival Day will be bigger and better this year. The funfair rides, stage entertainment, bbqs, go kart track and classic cars will be located at the Cliff top while the Esplanade will be home to more traditional activities with food, acoustic music and deckchairs. The Downhill Derby (one of the greatest spectacles in the Vale) will take place in the afternoon on Cliff Hill complete
with even more fiendish obstacles. Windsor gardens (South) will be turned into a Petting Zoo for the children complete with Donkey rides. The Kymin will host the Youth Event and offer an exciting dimension for the young people of Penarth. Free festival buses (x2) will run throughout the day servicing the town centre, clifftop, esplanade and outer areas of Penarth. It is a ‘hail and ride’ service so hop on when you wish along the route. Roll Displays by the Coastguard and Police Helicopter with Penarth’s RNLI will take place in the afternoon at high tide, water-ski displays will also feature during the afternoon. The historic Summer Festival Parade complete with
the classic cars will grace the event and entries for the parade are welcome with this year’s theme being Roald Dahl to mark the Centenary celebrations taking place throughout Wales. The Italian Garden will host a ‘mini’ Picnic Penarth and local traders will provide great seasonal food and other refreshments. The new and spectacular fireworks seen last year will again light the sky to mark the end of the event off the pier. Great vantage points to view the fireworks are: the Esplanade, Cliff Top and Penarth Head. creative industries anyone who can do that and survive in this climate is an inspiration! There’s an American jeweller called Todd Reed who is a huge inspiration in his work model and his designs. He makes high end luxury gold jewellery with rough diamonds and employs over 20 jewellers and 31 other staff.
the Business Women Penarth hub is booming and founder Tanya Lynch recently met up with one of the regular members Anne Morgan to find out more about her business journey so far...
What are your tips for balancing life while running a business? Making Lists, finishing lists and then making more lists! Having a supportive husband and family has been amazing. A shared calendar on our iphones is also a life saver! And being able to delegate jobs is a must, but equally the hardest thing to do with your own business. Who inspires you? There’s too many people to mention. There are so many people and small companies all doing such a great job in the
How do you brainstorm your new designs? Designs usually come quite organically and naturally. I’m quite a messy maker so I have lots of half made things on my bench and stones to play with. It’s a case of picking things up and composing a design with them. A quick sketch or a photograph means I won’t forget it. Tell us about the other designers you collaborate with? The dialogue I have with my makers and collegues is invaluable. To be able to bounce ideas off each other has been great to push designs and ideas on. Most designer makers I know work on their own in little studios with little contact with the outside world. To get together with each other is so helpful. In the non jewellery field I have worked with Sarah J Evans a photographer from the Vale. Usually Sarah is a baby and family photographer. Together we have experimented with jewellery and photography and created some amazing shots that help us both in our businesses.
What’s next for Anne Morgan Jewellery? Things have been very manic since opening in October, in a good way, that I’ve only just begun to think what the future can hold for us. My own work continues to develop and grow and I’m investing in materials for some more luxury high end pieces to showcase in the gallery. I’m constantly sourcing new makers to show work here and I’ll be implimenting an exhibition programme to showcase more designers soon. with sample sales and trunk shows. I have a room that once renovated can be hired out for classes for creative subjects including jewellery making. I have a great team around me and business is booming and evolving all the time, I’m more than happy with the direction its heading.

“Excellent service and a team of staff willing to compromise to suit their customers :) I came in yesterday due to a puncture and was able to leave my tire to be fixed and picked up the next day. The staff were very accommodating and swapped back my spare for me! Done and dusted for £15; will 100% be my first choice should I be in need of a garage in the future.” - Elizabeth Lauren I managed to perch my car on an elevated traffic island late at night, bursting a tyre and causing other damage in the process. The recovery company dropped it off at Victoria Garage and with their customary prompt service I was able to collect it - all repaired - the following afternoon and at a very reasonable cost too. I wouldn’t consider using another garage. Many thanks... Cath Newman Penarth View
