coast to coast Every few months we set off on our travels to enjoy a coastal escape. This time we travelled West along the M4 towards St Davids and stayed in an Airbnb secret gem positioned quietly in the gardens of a local farm... not far removed from Darling Buds of May. The location: Trefin – situated no more than a two minute walk from the rugged Pembrokeshire coastal path. The village has a friendly pub with good food and nearby there is a small stoney beach. The venue: Segrwyd Cabin Bed and Breakfast. What’s so special: If there was one word to describe this cabin is would be HEAVENLY... it is actually the most adorable cabin just moments away from the Welsh Coastal Path. It is a fun drive along a beaten up track to the farm buildings at Segrwyd. Once parked up in front of the converted barns, in the distance you can just about see the forest green cabin poking out from behind the farmhouse gates. Friendly sheep dogs greet you before our
Coast Life host welcomed us. Wafts of freshly baked Bara Brith mixed in with fresh Pembrokshire air was enough to banish the stresses of life. The cabin is very spacious and cosy with a huge kingsize bed looking very inviting at the one end. The living space has a comfy sofa and seats scattered with bright Melin Tregwynt blankets, it’s a feast for the eyes. The only noise you hear is of the birds tweeting and the odd tractor passing down the lane. The kitchen was stocked with the yummiest breakfast ingedients including locally sourced bacon and sausages, pancake ingredients and all replaced the following day. Activities:Walk to Porthgain - Wonderful little harbour steeped in history, which has a brilliant restaurant, a pub The Sloop Inn, a lovely gallery and an ice cream shop! Also has a large grass

Top tips for car maintenance this Autumn 1.
Before setting off on a long car trip, be sure your vehicle is in prime condition. Check that tires are properly inflated, all fluids are at their proper levels and you have a full tank of fuel.

Keep an eye on the weather and wherever possible plan a route around it.

Check the internet for traffic update sites and listen to radio traffic alerts, especially when approaching towns and cities you are unsure of.

Not even a GPS unit is infallible, so we recommend having a detailed map or road atlas as a backup just in case. A mapping app on your smartphone is another musthave for long road trips.

Consider becoming a member of AA or signing up for your car insurer’s roadside
assistance program. You won’t regret it when your car breaks down on a lonely back road. 7.
Keep costs down by conserving fuel as you drive. Minimize sudden starts and stops, empty your car of all unnecessary weight, and slow down - it takes much less fuel to drive 55 miles an hour than it does to drive 70.

Don’t wait until your fuel gauge is sitting on the red to refuel. On an unfamiliar road, you never know when the next petrol station will appear. As soon as you hit a quarter of a tank, start looking for a place to fill up.

It’s been over two months since the UK electorate voted in favour of leaving the EU and the debate has continued ever since. Stories of declining house prices and dented consumer confidence have been widespread, but we are so far seeing no discernible change in the local market. A few questions have been asked, but generally speaking there has been no effect yet in Penarth. From our perspective, prices in Penarth are maintained by high demand and low supply. Demand will continue to be strong thanks to our excellent schools (Stanwell recently coming in at

EDITORS REVIEW Forever Living what?! Aloe Vera has made its way into the news rather a lot recently. It’s been hailed as a new wonder product, one which can provide a healthy addition to peoples diets, aid in weight loss and overall encourage a healthier attitude to eating well. As the name suggests, C9 is a nine day detox plan, it promises to cleanse the body, make you healthier and give you more energy. The first couple of days were tough only because I always tend to grab and go coffee and snacks in between my meetings. From Day 3 onwards it was ok I just didn’t like the Aloe Vera gel 3 times a day! Overall I felt more energised, C9 is a detox and not a diet, but I found I had lost a little weight naturally and safely. More to my surprise I generally did feel healthier, my skin, nails and hair felt better and I slept well at night. It was a stress free and affordable 9 day detox, but I’m not sure I would have the stamina to do it again. peter griffiths DIRECTOR AT VALE SPORTS ACADEMY

We’re both originally from Mid Wales and we both love and work in football. Where exactly are you from and talk me through your football playing days? I’m from Aberystwyth which is a long way away from any professional football clubs! Despite that I captained Wales at U15 and U19 playing alongside stars of the future like Craig Bellamy and Simon Davies. When I was 14 I was at Manchester United and then aged 15 I moved to Chelsea where I stayed until I was 18. I had several really bad injuries when I was 17 so I 42

know quite a lot about your job as a physio as I tried to rehabilitate from 2 bad ankle fractures. Those injuries prevented me from getting any further as a professional player so I returned to Aberystwyth where I played for a bit in the League of Wales until I had to retire. What did you do for work after finishing as a player? I started in sports development. I also did my UEFA coaching badges and I did a youth module which included talent identification. After that I got a job at Wrexham FC in 2004
at their centre of excellence coaching the kids and identifying talented players. From there I moved to the Liverpool FC academy in 2007 and I moved to Aston Villa in 2009 because it was closer to home. I moved to Cardiff then for family reasons and I’ve been in the south ever since. What is PG10? I started PG10 in 2010 and it’s a not for profit business to help kids from deprived areas to access football. It aims to bridge the gap between grass roots football and club academies. You’ll find some absolute gems in deprived areas who may if it wasn’t for PG10 not have access to facilities in order to better their skills. We therefore aim to remove as many barriers as possible to increase football participation by providing excellent facilities, great coaching and the right opportunities for all. What age groups of players to you cater for? We cater all all! We have a Tiny Tots programme for 4-6 year olds. We have now even got an under 2’s team and we have players all the way up to the U19 level. We coached 83,000 kids last year and we definitely have the cheapest fees around. We’re linked with some of the biggest clubs in the world including Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich and even LA Galaxy and through this we have links with some great names like David Beckham.
And you’ve become a Penarthian. Yes, I’ve lived in Penarth for 4 years now. I love it here. It’s a nice little town which feels safe. It’s also got great schools although my son now goes to Ysgol Bro Morgannwg in Barry for Welsh medium education. Penarth is spoilt with loads of nice places to eat and drink and we especially love Bar44, Villa Napoli and Pier64.
We are now sitting in this magnificent building you’ve called the Vale Sports Arena. How did this come about? I felt that we needed a really good indoor facility so that we could guarantee that we could always coach our kids and I wanted to create a home for PG10. Last season, 19 weeks of football was cancelled because of bad weather and waterlogged pitches. Sadly, my father passed away last year and so I decided to invest my inheritance into the Vale Sports Arena project as his legacy to try to help the next generation of Wales international footballers but especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. I also want to mention my business partner Cathryn Sharp who has really helped this project become a reality. Not only do we provide a high standard of affordable football coaching but the Vale Sports Arena has created a community football hub which also allows kids to access sports science and strength and conditioning advice
to give themselves the best possible chance of achieving success in football. It’s not just a football facility though is it? You’ve got a lot more going on here. Yes. Shane Williams and Lee Byrne have been here using the facilities for their rugby camps. We have also got a gym with cardio-vascular machines and resistance equipment and free weights and we have spin classes, bootcamps and personal trainers. Membership of the gym is very reasonable. There is also a cafe which has been named Galactico after Real Madrid players and there is a bar. We have an indoor marquee where we host sports dinners with a host of famous sports stars as guest speakers. This Autumn Sports Dinners at the Vale Sports Arena include special guests Gazza, Ricky Hatton, Tony Bellow and Graeme Souness - for tickets please email info@valesportsarena.co.uk Finally, we have a sports shop and we sell trophies and provide an engraving service.

We simply want to give the kids of The Vale of Glamorgan and Cardiff the best possible opportunity to get involved in not just football but all sports. Best life moments? The births of my children Row, Ossian and Tali and being ‘given away’ by the oldest two at my marriage to Kit. Becoming the first welsh artist to be exhibited at Steak of the Art was pretty special too!
Ceri Lambert Age: 40 Occupations: Designer Maker/Artist and Community Fundraiser. First claim to fame: During my teens I was a backing singer on an album for welsh pop group Y Waw Ffactor, fronted by actress, singer (and Penarthian!) Rae Carpenter. I still haven’t let my husband listen to the album… Favourite past time: Making things. Doesn’t matter what, any art or craft keeps me happy.
What would a typical day in your life involve? Utter chaos with a glass of wine at the end! I’ve usually got half a dozen projects on the go alongside the day-to-day running of the craft business. Chuck in three kids and a tendency towards scattiness and it should be a recipe for disaster! Since January I’ve been hugely lucky to have my work base at The Talent Shack, run by the incomparable Shelley Norton. My studio is a 1969 caravan named Jessie, and I’m at my happiest when I’m tucked up inside getting on with some designing. Unfortunately, I tend to get a bit side-tracked by community events and organising fundraisers so life can involve a fair bit of juggling and late nights. So far my family have shown unreserved amounts of patience with me!
What do you love most about Penarth? It’s right by the sea and the countryside, with a bustling town centre and is 15 minutes from the capital city. If Carlsberg made towns they’d make Penarth! How has Penarth changed over the years? There’s been fantastic sense of vibrancy and a creative business community developing over the last few years. Plus the growth of foodie venues has been brilliant. Favourite gems of Penarth? Oh, too many to choose from! But particularly love The Bottle Shop and how they’re collaborating with other venues to put on events and using their shop to host art exhibitions. Penarth View
