Hello... Our town is packed with an ecclectic mix of cute boutiques, coffee shop culture and creative businesses – its a wonder we never need to leave Penarth?! Our Spring issue is all about adventure and innovation especially as the sparkling new TecMarina opens it doors. I was honoured to meet up with the brainchild behind it Chris Griffiths, read his interview on pages 4 & 5. We are also excited to announce our new style columnist Claire Jacklin, local mum and personal stylist has all the news and top tips about this seasons new trends on pages 10 & 11. Our roving sports reporter and local physio Dyfri had the main feature interview when he met with sporting celebrity Dot Davies on pages 58-60. The team at Penarth View have been lucky enough to experience the cool new trend of Supper Club where we learnt to cook and appreciate the benefits of using fresh ingredients. The Supper Club experience was filmed by local film duo Scott & Jules and can be viewed on our website www.penarthview.co.uk

tec marina An innovation centre Tec Marina opens it’s doors this Spring, we met up with Director Chirs Griffiths. What is your vision and purpose for Tec Marina? Tec Marina has been designed to home a community of innovative and forwardthinking organisations, freelancers and startups. We wanted a space filled with creative oxygen that reflected our own core values and to open it up to like-minded companies. The Tec Marina community will be well connected and highly collaborative. With hi-tech, flexible event and meeting space available, we hope that Tec Marina becomes a regular venue for key innovative events that take place in Wales.

Tell us about the venue and the facilities that are on offer? Tec Marina is a lot bigger than it looks from the outside. The building is made up of a large open Atrium, 18 offices, 2 co-working coves, 6 event/meeting rooms, 2 dining areas, 1 five-star gym suite with shower facilities and many informal break-out areas including a games room. We have tried to create a space that allows residents to balance their working day with their everyday life. We included the gym and changing rooms so residents are able to incorporate exercise into their working week without the additional cost of gym membership and without any extra travel before or after work. We have created plenty of space to facilitate collaboration and lightbulb moments throughout the building. We have
fitted our meeting/event spaces with interactive touchscreen technology and our own mind mapping and project management software to help capture new ideas and encourage innovation. How is the working day evolving? Tell us more about the benefits of co-working? The typical days of 9-5 seem to be disappearing. It’s important for organisations to give employees an element of flexibility and Tec Marina has been designed with this in mind. Many freelancers and start-ups are used to working flexible hours at home and many produce some of their best work at night. With 24 hour and weekend access, Tec Marina residents are given the freedom to work how and when they
Style Life like. Co-working has grown rapidly over the last decade. Members of co-working spaces have seen increases in productivity, creativity and network size, resulting in accelerated growth of their business. We want the collaborative spirit of co-working to be very much alive in Tec Marina, whether you are in one of our offices or at a co-working desk. We will do our best to ensure our residents are well connected to one another and I look forward to seeing what our residents will achieve. What do you like most about Penarth? Favourite place to visit in Penarth and why? Definitely Penarth Marina. There is something special about working by water. Over a decade ago I used to think how great it would be to
have a company based in the Marina and now here we are! I especially love both walking and jogging around the bay. It is such a great place to daydream and come up with new ideas. What are your passions in life? How do you manage a work/life balance? Obviously family first of course. I also love learning about ‘creativity and innovation’ and wrote a book on the subject called ‘GRASP the Solution’ in 2012. Technology has been a passion of mine since I setup my first company when I was in school and sold it when I was 25. This was after getting a ‘U’ (‘unclassified’, the lowest of the low) in my ‘A’ level Computer Science course! I enjoy keeping fit, especially the martial arts which I have studied for over twenty-five years. ‘Work /
life balance’ is not a concept that matters when you love what you do! What’s your proudest achievement? Coaching the senior leadership team of the European Commission on innovation processes and strategies. It was also so exciting to see one of our software products ‘iMindMap’ reach the number one spot overall on Amazon Japan, ranking above Playstation games likes of ‘Call of Duty.’ What do you enjoy most about your work? I love helping others to create things. What we do at OpenGenius, Tec Marina, and Droptask makes a difference to the way people think, plan, create, learn and manage their lives. Penarth View

Ysgol Y Deri learning community and its programs, like The Surf Experience, have been working extremely hard for the last 4 years to show what differently abled individuals are truly capable of... We believe they can achieve anything they put their minds to. All they need is the self-belief and a little help from their family and friends and the sky is quite literally the limit. On 28th May 2016 the SUP Challenge Wales team plan to stand up paddle 440 miles of Welsh coastline to support the dreams and aspirations of the pupils at Ysgol YDeri. Soft, cool colours
New season ahead, top picks for
So what is the Spring/Summer season all about? Well my first delight was seeing that the official Pantone colours of the year were: Rose Quartz and Serentity. These beautiful soft, cool colours are so gentle and ooze a feeling of summer. In this total look I have added the soft mint green top to mix the outfit up and added in grey accessories.
Spring/Summer by local stylist Claire Jacklin I love March, as to me it is the month of hope. Having survived the doom and gloom of January/February and with Christmas long gone, March offers the start of a whole new Season, one filled with colour and possibly some better weather….?! The new collections are firmly on the shop floors and I am starting to venture out with clients for personal shopping trips. As always, with the new trends it is a case of cherry picking the realistic ones and ditching anything unthinkable. For example, I shall not be taking on the ‘Pyjama Party’ idea and walking around in any form of sleep wear. Nor will I be accessorizing with a tiara of any kind – yep the catwalks had this idea going on!! So picking out the realistic trends, I have selected some wearable pieces to give you some new outfit inspiration. 10

Top - Sugarhill Boutique at John Lewis £32 Scarf - Oasis £12 Skirt - Whistles £95 Boots - Jigsaw £149 Bag - Oasis £35
Botanical The Botanical trend has carried on through from last season and I have pulled out a few pieces that I have seen and liked. These are shown as individual garments rather than a total look, as less is more when doing a particular print. It is best not to go too heavy all over, so stick to the print in one garment and keep accessories minimal. The jacket selected also hits on the ‘Sporty’ theme we are also seeing this season, great if you love comfort wear! Here are a few pieces that caught my eye…
Dress - Oasis £46 Bomber Jacket - Zara £48 Skirt - Ted Baker £180
Yellow
Style Life
Trousers - Karen Millen £160 Top - Oasis £31 Bag - Karen Millen £150 Shoes - Karen Millen £125
And to finish off and to brighten up our day, I have chosen all things yellow. Yellow is featuring heavily especially in accessories and so I have put together a few items which have caught my eye. Yellow looks fantastic with denim and can really liven up an existing outfit to give it that Spring fresh look! Pom Pom - Topshop £12 Scarf - Jigsaw £49 Top - White Stuff £43 Shoes - LK Bennett £195 Bag - Oasis £25
Stripes Next up are Stripes. When I do a home wardrobe styling session with a client I often see an abundance of striped tops. In fact my recent client on the final count had purchased ten, all in varying colours! When wearing stripes you have to be careful as the horizontal ones can be enlarging. If you wish to avoid enlarging a certain area a good trick is to opt for a diagonal or vertical stripe, as this can have a slimming effect. There also seems to be a lot of button detail going on too, Karen Millen have some really beautiful pieces in navy, which I love to team with red. Here are some of my favourite finds….
If you would like some Personal Styling advice please take a look at my new website, I’d love to hear from you.

Property chat with Richard from David Baker & Company We sat down with Richard to get his thoughts on the property market. So, Rich, what’s the market like at the moment?! That’s normally the first thing people ask me when they see me! The answer? Unpredictable. There’s still a lot of uncertainty in the economy, and plenty of flux in certain areas, most notably the buy-to-let investment market. Demand is still good, supply is mixed. As always, good property will sell quickly at the right price. You mentioned the buy-to-let market. What’s happening there? Well, reading between the lines, it looks like the Government (both Westminster and Cardiff ) are trying to make it easier for first time buyers to get onto the property ladder by making it less attractive for people to have property investments. Stamp duty is changing in April, increasing the level that investors will have to pay by 3% over the

Behind the scenes of Vale Skin Clinic
How did you get into skin care? I qualified as a GP in 2012 and I have always retained an interest in dermatology. I studied for a post graduate diploma in dermatology at Cardiff University and qualified in 2014. It was a natural progression to apply my specialist knowledge in skin care treatments and develop a clinic. What does your clinic specialise in? The clinic offers a range of cosmetic dermatology with dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle treatments and Dermalux LED Phototherapy. My dermatology background allows broad approach consultations for patients with skin complaints or queries. We offer the unique service in Wales of the Dermalux LED light treatment programme. This advanced system helps treat a wide range of skin complaints from acne 24

to eczema. It can also be used for improving blemishes, pigmentation and fine lines. It has featured successfully at the Aesthetic Awards in London for the past three years, winning Best new Treatment initially and then Treatment of the Year for the past 2 years. It is an excellent treatment for both cosmetic and medical dermatology, which is why I chose to introduce it to the clinic. What is the advice for people who have never chosen to have skin treatments? I always assess patients individually and discuss an individual treatment plan. This personal approach is designed not only to answer a patient’s queries or concerns but also to ensure that any treatment course is thoroughly understood and that the client is happy to
proceed. I would recommend to anyone who is considering skin treatments to ensure their practitioner is appropriately qualified and that a comprehensive consultation takes place. In this consultation the whole process should be explained with appropriate opportunity for questions to be answered. What treatments are available this year? This year at the clinic you can come to have anti-wrinkle injections commonly known as Botox Ž – this can improve the appearance of wrinkles and can last for about 3-4 months. Many people are now having this treatment at a younger age to prevent lines developing and we have had some excellent and very happy clients at the clinic. Another treatment is the use of Dermal Fillers; this is an injection
What is the process from the moment you decide to have a treatment? The Clinic can be contacted via email or telephone to book a consultation or to ask any questions. At the consultation I will go through the client’s expectations and then discuss in detail the treatments that would likely benefit them to get the result they want. They will then be booked
in to have the treatment done as soon as they are able. They will be provided with a number to call if any concerns following the treatment and will always have the appropriate follow up arranged. What sort of prices are we to expect and what do you get for it? The prices vary depending on the specific treatment. For anti-wrinkle treatments the prices start from £135. Dermal fillers start at £220. The Dermalux LED light treatments start at £45 for a single session (20 minutes) upwards depending on the length of the course and skin condition being treated. All Anti-wrinkle and Dermal Filler appointments will have a complimentary Dermalux session following their treatment – this helps reduce any bruising or inflammation following injections. Special packages for events as weddings can also be arranged allowing the whole family (including the men) to look at their very best. What do you have planned for the clinic in 2016? We hope to introduce more treatments into the clinic in the next 6-12 months and work with some of the skin charities in Wales to offer the Dermalux to those people who have tried medication or creams with no success. We are starting to include bridal packages for weddings and also for special events and will be attending Wedding Fayre’s across South Wales demonstrating the Dermalux machine – follow us on twitter @valeskinclinic and like us on facebook to see where we will be!

that can help fill those wrinkles that can’t be corrected with Botox ® and can be used to add volume to areas such as the lips. It uses a substance called Hyaluronic Acid, which is naturally found in your skin to help even out lines and wrinkles. It can last up to 9 months and it can give some fabulous instant results. Also we use the Dermalux LED light system at the clinic. This is a light treatment popular with celebrities and cosmetic surgeons. It harnesses the power of light using 3 specific light waves – Blue, Red and Near Infrared. The treatment will be consultation led and can be used to treat eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, hyperpigmentation as well as lots of other conditions. I chose this for the clinic as it bridges the medical with the aesthetic and can be used a part of a beauty regimen to maintain beautiful skin or to help with chronic conditions. The results are incredible and anyone interested in this treatment can look at their website www. dermaluxled.com for more information. We are lucky to have the only machine in Wales at present.
What is your advice of maintaining healthy skin? The most important thing I believe is hydration. It is amazing how much the skin can change just from ensuring adequate hydration. Routine is additionally important and this is something I emphasise during the consultation. If you have troubled skin or just a few blemishes the Dermalux LED as a maintenance beauty regimen is just amazing!

Deborah Drew the creative force behind her own interior design agency Debrorah Drew Design shares her love of interior design, what inspires her and what we can expect from the interior trends in 2016 Why did you to get into the interior design industry? I have always been a creative. I am fascinated by architectural styles and the history of interior design and what drives these trends. I am drawn to colour and pattern, and how they work together, everything from co-ordinated, balanced schemes to mixing unique pieces for an eclectic style.

What has been the best and most challenging moments to date and why? DIY SOS was without doubt my biggest challenge. The television industry was unfamiliar territory, so aside of the pressures of the actual jobs we were doing, everything else was completely alien to me. I was slightly terrified of the camera at first, but there was no time to think about it, which was probably a good thing; I was in at the deep end and I just had to get on with it. Other larger jobs I have worked on, such as L’Oreal and more recently Holm House Hotel have also been a challenge, but I think some people seem to thrive under extreme pressure. You just go up a couple of gears for as long as it takes and it’s always extremely rewarding when you complete a project.
What is your secret to a good work/life balance? My diary! I have always used an A4 Desk Diary, as I like to see everything written down for the day, and I use my own code system to prioritise. I find it very easy to switch off at the end of the day, if I know everything is planned and is in place. Friends think I should go digital, but I couldn’t cope with not being able to see everything at once, I know it’s
Home Life
What has been the key to your success? Interior Design is a really exciting field to work in, but it requires excellent organisation skills. Juggling ten jobs, each at a different stage, but each with the same level of priority, is far from straightforward. I have always been organised, but I think almost twenty years experience is key here, as my ability to handle lots of jobs is second nature to me now through techniques I have developed. I would also have to say a warm personable character is essential, along with ability to listen and understand your clients’ objectives, often better than they do. However, I believe the most important ingredient to my success is my service quality, I have exceptionally high standards, and I just enjoy looking for new ways to constantly improve. I work very hard for my clients, and I aim to exceed their expectations at all times and to basically make the experience a pleasurable one and enjoy the time with them, any changes to the home are exciting, especially when the stress has been removed.
cliché, but my diary is my Bible – I would be lost without it. I’ve been so incredibly busy I have decided to upgrade to a two A4 page a day for 2016, so I’m very excited – my diary is always my favourite Christmas present! What can we expect from interior design trends in 2016? I think we are still firmly in the grips of grey and its endless shades, particularly beautiful when used with ink and white. Aside of this on-going trend, I think we should brace ourselves for a new change focusing on nature. I think fresh spring greens will become popular in 2016, used along side clean white and introducing natural woods, both in furniture and sculptural pieces. Patterned carpets are also going to make a comeback, but with more subtle designs than those we remember from the seventies!

After watching Channel 4’s ‘Amazing Spaces’ Shed of the Year series recently, It got us thinking that we need to let people know about the quiet revolution that is going on in the world of the Garden Shed. The humble Garden Shed was once the domain of the rusty tool, lawnmower or man stealing a few moments of solitude, away from the stresses of life. But no more. With an expanding range of garden building options available, plus the advances in WIFI, Broadband and Internet technology, combined with easily installed low cost insulation solutions, means the garden shed world is now transformed. Now endless opportunities have been opened up for how the garden shed can be used for work, rest or play.
Shed Love
The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well In Wales. As people seek different and more flexible ways to earn an income, the Garden Shed has become a genuinely cost effective alternative to renting expensive shop or office space, and all the overheads that come with that. I cannot think of a better commute to work than a stroll down the
Home Life garden path with a mug of tea and slice of toast, and within 30 seconds be in your own oasis of calm. Whether it’s a garden office, sewing room, workshop or recording studio, the garden shed is the new low cost work space solution. Once the exclusive bolt hole of man, the humble shed has thrown open its doors and is now the leisure hub for the entire family. The Garden Pub, Gym, Craft workshop, teenage hangout or reading room, are just some of the recreational uses for the garden shed. The sky is the limit, and only your imagination stands in your way when thinking of different uses for your garden room.

What is Supper Club all about? 6 people and “the chef”, a fab kitchen, mystery ingredients chosen by each Supper Clubber, a whole lot of cooking and eating! A kind of a mix of Ready Steady Cook and Saturday Kitchen... It’s about having fun
cooking and removing the shame and dread around food, it’s about making cooking easy. It’s about getting people to eat real food and feel great doing it. It’s all about people learning to cook without a recipe, opening cupboards and the fridge and saying “yeah, I’ve been to Alex’s Supper Club and now I feel totally confident about making a meal out of what’s here!”
Alex’s Supper Club
Why did you set up the business? To get a little serious (but only for a minute!) There are a lot of symptoms like acid indigestion, tiredness, colds, sluggishness, bloating, constipation, bad smelling bowl movements that are becoming “normal” and “common” and they are not! The rise of cancer and diabetes especially is just crazy and I believe all to do with what we are eating, they are completely first world diseases and avoidable! Alex’s Supper Club is my answer to these issues! Cooking real food usually solves all of these issues and gets people feeling great and also empowered. It’s also cheaper! When people come back to me sharing stories of their cooking journey and things they have changed and how great it feels it totally makes my day.
Taste of Penarth What is your vision with regards to helping us all try and adopt a healthy eating lifestyle? It’s all about getting it out there, showing people how simple it can be, educating people on how convinience isn’t in the long run convenient. When food is cooked and shared it builds relationships, helps de-stress and makes life more real. You need to be present when cooking, it’s great to get away from the stresses of the day and it’s more healthy than vegging out in front of the telly. I could talk all day long about why this is so important! How can we get involved with Supper Club? I have lots of Supper Clubs regularly at Supper Club HQ in Pontypridd, you can book on my website, you can come alone, as a couple or
in groups, it’s a fab way to meet people! I can even come to peoples homes to do one! I also work closely with Riverford Organic Farms and we hold a monthly “Riverford Cook off ” Where I demonstrate how to cook everything in that weeks box and feed it to everyone! This is usually 10 people. I also do fermenting, preserving and pickling classes and also butchery and stock making sessions! Demonstrations, talks and corporate team building, if I can get people cooking I’ll be there! I’m currently working on a healthy eating program with Llanhilleth Miners Institute to get kids cooking. I also work one to one with clients who want to change their eating because they have had enough of being sick and tired and want to “reset” their kitchen!
What is the future for Supper Club in Penarth? Events with other venues in Penarth so people can come along and get a taste! Super excited to be part of Penarth Bake off Judging Team and really looking forward to this year event that will be even bigger than last year! Demonstrations at the events Penarth has on throughout the year! And any ideas people have, give me a shout and let’s make it happen!

There is a lot to think about obviously and our aim is to help you at all times and share your burden. As we are an independent, family-run

Cardiff Safe Deposit is a privately owned safe deposit service. In response to the banks’ closure of safe deposit boxes it recently opened in central Cardiff to accommodate and secure personal or business valuables.
With so many small business owners in Penarth, I increasingly worry about how vulnerable they are to hacking or loss of data they control. It’s not just big businesses that are under threat. In fact, SMEs are seen as a much easier target than big multinational companies who have checks in place to ensure that their data is safe. While you might not think your data is valuable, it almost certainly is to someone. For companies whose data is stolen, the costs are potentially huge in terms of rectifying the breach and repairing reputational damage. The average British business affected by hacking loses abo £4,000 and two thirds of all cyber attacks are on businesses with 11-100 employees.
With competitive prices, convenient opening hours (including Saturday) and no need to book, our service is here to get you back on the road in no time. Based on Station Road, we’re conveniently located near Penarth town shops and Penarth train station. We offer a wide range of budget, mid-range and premium tyres, and we also stock wiper blades, bulbs and batteries. To save you the time and hassle of checking your tyres yourself, we also offer a FREE tyre check. Simply pop in and we’ll be at your service! Favourite past time: My new-found passion for tennis which I find a fraction easier than golf. Nah - they are both difficult in their own, frustratingly addictive way! What can’t you live without? The challenge of creating something - whether its a plan for an exciting new extension, designing a modern oak and glass staircase or a landscaping scheme for a friend. The annual skiing trip with the boys, drinking over priced Choco-lat avec du Rhum for elevenses and Apres Ski with your ski boots undone. Wednesday night tennis. Tea, one sugar. Biggest temptation: To work too hard. Must learn to delegate! Or retire! To dig out my crusty rugby boots and have just one more game.

Best life moment? Putting a deposit down on our first house on a new estate at the tender age of 20. Winning a BAFTA for Best Television Graphics back in the day. Getting planning permission to build a house in my garden. Being at the final British Lions Test in Sydney when Gatland’s boys gave the Wallabies a thrashing! What do you love most about Penarth? The fact that incomers rave about it - makes me open my eyes and appreciate it even more. That locals who leave the town to seek pastures new often return. That its becoming the ‘go to’ place for new restaurants.

top 5 things to do in Penarth this spring
As the nights are getting lighter and the weather gets warmer, we know that days out are on the cards this spring. Also as an added bonus, there are plenty of things to do locally in Penarth, which are perfect for couples, friends, family and individual days out. by Charlotte Morgan
1. penarth pier Since its refurbishment in 2013, The Victorian facade of Penarth Pier stands as one of Penarth’s most popular attractions. From fishing off the end of the pier, to sitting on the pier, or grabbing a bite to eat in the outdoor café’s or indoor pier café, where a variety of food is available, guaranteed to suit all ages. If the weather isn’t so good, don’t panic! The pier also offers many indoor facilities such as the art house style cinema, which shows a range of films. For more information on this visit www. 48

2. The Esplanade Whether you visit the pier or just prefer to take in the beach and what the esplanade has to offer there are a variety of places to visit and eat on your stroll down the Victorian style esplanade. The beach is perfect for Sunday
walks, or family days out with a picnic when the sun is shining. There is also a variety of places to eat on the esplanade, including: James Sommerin, The Fig Tree and Romeo’s By The Sea. The esplanade is also home to the seaside theme shop Shore. Under the same ownership as Hampton’s in Penarth Town, the shop does not disappoint! The costal themed gifts and furniture makes it almost impossible to come away empty handed. (Open Tuesday – Sunday)

3. Cosmeston Lakes Country Park & Medieval Village Cosmeston offers an array of activities for all ages. The wildlife around Cosmeston has become one of the pinnacles of its success, particularly with the variety of birds. For children, there is a play area and acres of land to sit and have family time with a picnic or hire a BBQ. The historical element of Cosmeston is another reason for its success and popularity. The Medieval Village offers a step back through time, indulging in local heritage and culture. With Cosmeston also being the set of
television programmes such as Merlin, it gives huge credibility to its surroundings. For tours around the Medieval Village - prices are below, however opening times change with seasons.

Interview with
Dot Davies TV and Radio presenter By: Dyfri Owen - Director of PPP physio, Physio to Cardiff RFC and Football Association of Wales Dot you have got every sports fanatics dream job as the presenter of Sport Wales! Were you a really sporty Kid in school? I wish I could say I was! I was the kind of kid that gave everything a go. Sadly, my career as a great hockey player ended with a couple of county appearances, and although I was a half decent tennis player I realised pretty early on that I was better talking about sport than actually playing it to any standard! Did you always want to be a journalist and work in the media? I always knew I wanted a career in the media. I wasn’t quite sure as what, but I was interested in TV and radio. To be honest I thought being in front of camera was a bit too ambitious so I set my sights on researching and producing to begin with.
What degree did you do and where? I did a degree in Welsh at Cardiff University and managed to combine it with an element of journalism and language and communication. Talk us through your career so far from your first job after graduating through to what you are up to these days. I suppose after university I was prepared to work for next to nothing for anyone who’d give me work experience. I did a lot of work as a runner on various TV programmes, then became a researcher. I particularly enjoyed being a researcher on a show with Max Boyce during the 1999 Rugby World Cup. I was responsible for booking guests and audience members. A dream job for a recently graduated rugby mad West Walian!
Lifestyle
Did you always want to be a sports presenter? My best friend from a very young age says she remembers me telling her when I was maybe 7 or 8 that I wanted to present at Wimbledon when ‘i grew up.’ I don’t think I ever actually believed that would ever happen! Yet I’ve now been part of BBC Radio 5live, Radio 4 and Radio 2’s presenting team at Wimbledon for 11 years. Being pitchside for Wales Grand Slams has been pretty special too. A job as a sports presenter can be challenging and stressful especially when it’s live sport, but I’m fully aware of what a privilege it is. I’ve been very very lucky over the years.
I then got a job as a researcher at BBC Wales Sport in 2001 and from then was really nurtured and given wonderful opportunities. Don’t get me wrong, you don’t get to present in front of camera overnight, but you’re allowed to develop gradually, and encouraged to make the most of every opportunity.
“A job as a sports presenter can be challenging and stressful especially when it’s live sport, but I’m fully aware of what a privilege it is.”
I started reading sports bulletins on air, before heading to the big bad smoke and working for 5Live. There I had amazing experiences working on air with fantastic people like Eamonn Holmes and Gabby Logan. I’ll always be grateful for the encouragement I was given by these lovely, and established broadcasters. I now present Sport Wales on BBC Two Wales, and I’ve just started my own show on Radio Wales on Friday mornings 9-11am (Jason Mohammed does Mon-Thurs). The radio show Penarth View

on Radio Wales gives me something totally different away from sport. It’s music and chat with guests. Slightly terrifying but I love it. I’m still working at Wimbledon for 5live this year and will also be covering the Cheltenham Festival for them for the first time alongside John Inverdale. Which sports star has given you the best interview so far and why? That’s a very tricky one! There are many memorable post match rugby interviews I’ve done, some of which Id probably rather forget! Nothing worse than a grumpy coach who’s just lost...again! But I remember Jamie Roberts being very emotional after winning in France in 2013, and Mike Phillips at his hilarious best after beating England that same year.
I admit I had to really compose myself before interviewing David Beckham. Can you blame me?! I was pretty star struck by Thierry Henry too! Which of all the sports personalities you have interviewed has made you the most star struck? I admit I had to really compose myself before interviewing David Beckham. Can you blame me?! I was pretty star struck by Thierry Henry too! 60

My favorite sports personality though is one I’m lucky enough to work with every year and that’s John McEnroe. Funny, clever and utterly terrifying all in equal measure, I work with him on his show for 5live at Wimbledon as his sort of side kick. You never know what’s coming next. That’s why I love working with him. That, and he is a genuine legend. So you have been a resident of Penarth for a few years now. What was it about the town that made you want to live here and what do you like best about it now? We actually decided to move to Penarth when choosing a school for our children. We liked Ysgol Pen-y-Garth as soon as we visited, and the fact that it was in Penarth was a very big bonus! Since moving here we’ve grown more and more attached to the town. I love the fact that I bump into people I know everytime I go into town. I enjoy chatting to the boys who work in the butchers, or the girls in the fruit and veg shop in the arcade. We as a family enjoy having a wonder down to the pier, or a kick about on the cliff tops. We’re lucky to have many friends here now and feel a part of a really supportive community. My other half coaches football with Inter Penarth and cricket for under 9’s, which makes us feel even more a part of the community. It’s just a perfect place to bring up our children.
We first met a long long time ago. Is it true that you wanted to do a TV programme about your friends lives as newly qualified physios?? Surely that would have been un-missable telly and could have won a BAFTA! I’d forgotten about that Dyfri! I must still have that gem of a TV proposal somewhere. If I remember correctly you were to be the main ‘star’ of the documentary (obviously!). It’s never too late, perhaps I should dig it out and try again!

Is March 16th the new tax year end? It may have not made the Chancellors speech last July but further detail in the budget on pension changes has added to the biggest retirement shake up in history. Over the last two years the government has implemented the single tier state pension, due to commence this April. They have opened up the full withdrawal of a pension fund, they have made pensions the single most important inheritance tax tool and they have introduced the mandatory workplace pension for employees. All of this has served to increase the tax take in the UK. It is estimated that the ability to withdraw your pension fund has introduced 1.2 Billion in new tax alone since the changes, and the Chancellor is not finished yet! If the soothsayers are to be believed the Chancellor is about to tinker with the amount of tax relief you can claim on your pension contributions. The word on the street seems to point to abolition of higher rate tax relief in favour of one single rate of tax that can
Local & trusted financial planning be claimed. There also seems to be a slim possibility that he will raise the basic rate relief thus giving the majority of Britons a pension boost. The question is when is he going to implement this? At the last budget he closed all pension input periods without any notice and he is quite able to do the same on March 16th. So if you’re reading this before budget day, act now and get your pension money in before the changes are made.
