I was honoured to spend time with local nutritional guru Angharad Evans. My feature focuses on what I learnt about what I should eat and what to avoid and the benefits of going back to basics on meal planning – perfect timing for our New Year Get Fit resolutions. I hope you enjoy our Winter issue and wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. As always a huge thanks to our local businesses and of course you our readers for supporting Penarth View. Lapland From Penarth to
I must admit to being a sun seeker when it comes to holidays but taking a trip to Lapland has changed my perception completely. Think a trip to Lapland is just for kids? Think again! Taking a festive trip of your child’s dreams is as much fun for grownups. Meeting Santa is optional - but silly Christmas jumpers are essential! There is simply no better way to get into the festive spirit. You can travel to Lapland direct from Cardiff or Bristol for either a day trip, or for a longer 2, 3 or 4 night break. Day trips are not for the faint hearted - the flight time is around 4 hours each way so it’s a very long and tiring day, but you can pack a lot into the few hours you get in resort and if you’re tight on time or budget this is a great way to get a taste of the Lapland experience. There are two sides to Lapland - the more commercialised resorts with numerous hotels and facilities which are busting and busy - or a more traditional rural Finnish experience further north for a remote Arctic wilderness escape. There are a wide variety of accommodation options from large family friendly hotels with swimming pools to traditional rustic wooden cabins nestled in the woods. Besides a family meeting with Father Christmas himself, Lapland trips offer a chance to try a
From Penarth to
variety of fun outdoor activities. My favourite was the exhilarating husky sleigh ride. The teams of dogs effortlessly pull you at high speed through a glittering icy landscape with not a soul in sight - it felt like racing to the end of the world and I didn’t want the adventure to end. The snowmobile expedition is also a real highlight - the controls are incredibly easy to use and the kids all travel in a wooden sleigh pulled by an experienced guide so they can enjoy the exciting ride as well. Having never ridden a skidoo before I was a little cautious at first but after five minutes or so I was zooming along like a pro, admiring the frozen rivers and marveling at the beauty of the frozen landscape around me and peeking at the sky to see if the Northern Lights had made an appearance. Many more activities are available to enjoy; reindeer sleigh rides, tobogganing, ice fishing, snow hockey and a team of mischievous elves to keep the kids entertained. You can stay overnight in an igloo, enjoy sitting round an open fire in a kota which is a traditional Lappish tent, and enjoy reindeer sausages roasted on an open fire washed down with loganberry juice - both local delicious specialties. Using a travel agent’s advice to plan and book a Lapland trip is essential. There are a huge variety of companies that offer the experience -
and some are better than others. A family who booked with me said: “We booked our family holiday to Lapland with Jo and she was there for us every step of the way with advice and guidance. We are so excited about our holiday, which she made even better with a room upgrade to include a private sauna.” Spots book up very quickly and most companies offer early booking incentives such as half price child places or free half board. It pays to plan well in advance - so if you’re
thinking of Winter 2018 then you need to book sooner rather than later. You won’t regret whisking the family off to Lapland - they are memories you’ll all treasure forever - and you’re only young once! I have lots of top tips to share with you when visiting Lapland such as what to pack, what to wear and how to best prepare for your trip of a lifetime - call me to find out more!

Nutritional Guru for Life a review by Tanya Lynch A demanding professional career coupled with a busy family life makes many of us longing to be healthier. Poor nutrition can leave us over extended, overwhelmed and overweight. Rushing though meals, eating junk food or snacking late at night are unfortunately too typical habits of our modern day existence.
typically focuses on the physical symptoms only, thereby ignoring the causes of an illness which can include life style and environmental factors. She treats a variety of physical and mental conditions including IBS, migraines, chronic fatigue, anxiety, diabetes, thyroid issues and many more.
An unhealthy diet has serious repercussions and can result in depleted energy, stress, and illness. Being busy doesn’t necessarily mean having to forgo healthy eating habits; it just requires some knowledge and organisation. Which in theory sounds simple enough but I battle with the dedication to buy and be healthy until I met Angharad a Natural Health Therapist who I have aptly named the ‘Nutritional Guru’.
Her treatment began with a non-invasive physical assessment, a discussion about my symptoms and an evaluation of my diet. Through a process of elimination, whereby I removed coffee, sugar, orange juice and potatoes for a 2 week period, Angharad identified what foods reacted well to my body and ones I should be avoiding.
It was by chance I met Angharad and I told her that I struggle with sugar cravings, feeling lethargic by 3pm each day and more often than not feeing bloated after a main meal. All symptoms I seem to cope with but ideally want to be rid of. Angharad explained in laymen’s terms that I needed to get to the root of all these problems and so my nutritional journey started. ANGHARAD 8
Penarth View
Angharad believes that traditional medicine
She replaced these foods with herbal alternatives, which, to my surprise worked like magic! Throughout the treatment I was supported and encouraged by Angharad, who explained that her therapy involves lifestyle changes, which will aid our body back to health. I managed to stay off the coffee more so than the sugar, I learnt so much about why I crave certain foods and amazingly over the 8 week period, I no longer suffered from bloatedness or tiredness. It was super refreshing for me. I have learnt so much about how my body
No food is banished through this therapy, although coffee, sugar and potatoes were eliminated at first and then introduced into my diet. There are definite reasons why my body did not want potatoes for example, therefore ridding the cause I was able to re-introduce potatoes to my diet. Angharad also had a list of foods which she believes nobody should ever eat or drink, so it’s no more orange juice for me!!
I HAVE CHANGED A FEW HABITS WHICH FOLLOW ANGHARAD’S ADVICE… 1. I do my best to consume nutrient dense foods. Processed foods are low in nutrient value and full of shelf life affirming badness such as chemicals and additives. Even though the packaging might appear to be a convenience, keep in mind that processed foods are a big no-no when it comes to establishing a healthy diet. Although if on the odd occasion you do give in to processed foods I would check the ingredient list - the shorter the better!
Nutrition
reacts to certain foods and I am now much more dedicated to a more simple yet creative menu and the results are incredible. Although a posh coffee with a slice of cake has crept back into my life, I am aware immediately what foods to avoid. If anything Angharad has been a blessing and my relationship with food is now an enjoyable one.
2. Make your own pre-packaged goodies. Invest in some reusable lunch containers, and pre-prepare your meals and snacks. Stack in the refrigerator for easy access and voila, instant healthy nibbles, nothing artificial in sight. 3. Menu Planning. This one is a big one. Not only does it organize meal preparation down to a fine art, but it also reduces ingredient waste (i.e. no more veggies wilting in the crisper!). By looking up recipes and planning out meals and snacks in advance you can ensure that every leaf is used. Why not focus on a couple of seasonal ingredients per week, and prepare dishes that highlight these star players in different ways. 4. Don’t forget about leftovers. Store uneaten food in an airtight container and enjoy a fuss free meal later. Leftover mains often translate
well into delicious sides; warm pesto pasta makes for a great pasta salad served cold the next day! 5. Smoothie lovers can prep in advance too. Hate washing the blender every time you liquefy your lunch? Although one good scrub is unavoidable, you can cut down on dishes by making an extra batch, and organizing tomorrow’s breakfast at the same time. For more information contact Angharad. Local Students get Global Opportunities Mr Underhill After 43 years at Westbourne and the last 15 as principal, I am delighted to be taking on a broader role for Westbourne, launching sixth form colleges in Sydney in 2019-20, Singapore in 2020-21, and then one or two further schools a year thereafter. New York, Frankfurt and Hong Kong are the next candidates. This enormously exciting development will provide the opportunity for all of our local sixth form students to spend a term or two studying the same curriculum at an international sister school, in the same highly-supportive environment and with the same standards of academic excellence. In an increasingly global economy, this opportunity for our local students to expand their horizons is unparalleled. To enable this to happen, I am delighted to announce the promotion of Dr Gerard Griffiths to Principal of Westbourne.
Dr Griffiths is a passionate Welshman who holds PhD in chemistry, was educated at Imperial College, and is fluent in both Welsh and French. Most recently Academic Deputy of Westbourne Senior School and previously Head of Westbourne Prep School, Dr Griffiths has over 30 years’ teaching experience in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, the previous fifteen years in senior leadership positions. Westbourne achieves outstanding results at every stage of the curriculum and provides the best all-round education in the Vale, from 3 to 18 years of age. 10

From 2019 - 20, Westbourne students will be able to study part of their sixth form in Sydney. In subsequent years, they will also be able to study in Singapore, New York, Frankfurt and Hong Kong.
Dr Griffiths This is my proudest moment professionally. Fantastic pupils, outstanding staff and incredible support from parents, I’m delighted to be taking Westbourne forwards. Literacy and numeracy attainment throughout the school is extremely high and still rising, GCSE results are second to none and our sixth form has been top of the UK-wide league tables for three years in a row! I understand fully that a key to Westbourne’s success – past and future – is engagement with our local community. While Mr Underhill progresses our international development, I will remain firmly focused on you – our local community. Over the coming issues of Penarth View, in each and every issue, we will have a regular article discussing key educational issues that affect us all: ourselves as professionals, you as parents and, above all else, our children and their future. If you would like to discuss any of these topics – or indeed any other educational matter – please don’t hesitate to contact me directly.

Styling award winning TV presenter & Ultra endurance athlete, Lowri Morgan... Earlier this year I had the great pleasure of meeting Lowri who not only is a BAFTA and multi-award winning TV presenter, but also an adventurer and an elite Ultra endurance runner. Lowri approached me as she felt she had lots of clothes but needed some help with organisation and to gain some new ideas of how to style herself instead of reaching for the same easy pieces. I asked Lowri how she found the experience and why she chose to use my Styling Services. What made you approach a Personal Stylist? I have accumulated many clothes over the years, as my body shape hasn’t changed much since my late teens. I’ve mostly kept all of my clothes especially ones that bring back memories, or that have come back into fashion, clothes that have not dated and have withstood the test of time. Now with my family growing and life as busy as ever, I felt I needed a ‘sort out’ of my wardrobe, ideally with someone (who wasn’t emotionally attached to my clothes) to tell me honestly what to keep and what not to! My style has also changed over the years from the time when I was a children’s TV presenter to today, a working mother.
Style
What different styles of clothes do you wear for your different job roles? I wear a lot of outdoor gear due to my job as an adventure presenter and sports journalist, I have many dresses and suits for when I work with businesses and for corporate speaking. I also like to wear long flattering dresses for black tie events when I’m the host. But you’d normally find me wearing lounging clothes and jeans in the day when I’m working from home, or doing the school run. How has it helped you using a personal Stylist? I know what I have now as my Autumn/ Winter wear is all hanging in one wardrobe. I don’t have time to waste choosing what to wear. Now everything is colour coordinated, easy to find and put together. I have order in my wardrobe at last! How would you approach shopping for clothes now? I’m not shopping clothes for a while now! But I do know what my best colours are so will keep that in mind when I do shop. I realised that I needed very little, just some key pieces to complete outfits that I already owned. Who is your style inspiration? I do like the simple lines of Victoria Beckham’s clothes. Gisele always looks fabulous in day & evening clothes and I always keep an eye on fashion stylists’ pages on Instagram, looking for ideas.
What was the best thing about using a Stylist? Helping me sort my wardrobe out and pairing clothes that I’d never have thought about putting together. I have so many more outfits from pieces that I already owned. I just didn’t always know how to put them together and there was too much clutter. It has helped me not to buy unnecessarily, saving me time and money on shopping, which is always good!

Bronze Age Kitchens 2017 saw a shift towards metallics and industrial elements in the home kitchen. Open shelving was a popular option and bronze or copper flashes were a great way to add interest to the room. It began with light fittings, ornaments and accessories. Then pots pans and picture frames. Sink and tap manufacturers were quick to spot this trend and grabbed the opportunity. Several companies started to offer contemporary mixer tap designs in copper and bronze. In 2018 a number of major kitchen cabinet manufacturers will be incorporating metallics. Last year’s stone effect doors and panels are now going to be joined by bronze and steel effect finishes. They look amazing and I’m looking forward to working with them. Two tone kitchens are very much on trend. The bronze door works well in combination with a
There’s Living and there’s...
secondary colour. The German manufacturer Schuller now offers a bronze effect laminate. It looks stunning when combined with their top
Home Life selling Lava Black. Colour coded grip rails are also a recent addition to the Schuller range. This means you can choose a handleless cabinet system with flat slab doors and clean lines for an ultra contemporary look. Lighting is key element that every kitchen designer needs to consider. This is especially true when you are dealing with a darker pallet. These doors and panels reflect the light. This in turn reveals textures and patterns that draw you into the space for a closer look. I always recommend adding zone lighting to darker kitchens. This could include under mounted cabinet lights, illuminated grip rails or discreet lighting to shelves and cubby holes.
2018 is already hotting up and I’m busier than ever. The trend for metallics sees no signs of abating. If this is a style you are interested in exploring, why not pop into my Llantwit Major design studio for a coffee and a chat. I’ll have all the samples and plenty of design ideas to get the creative juices flowing.

Always a breeze at Seabreeze Homes Who are you and what do you do? I’m the Branch Manager here at Seabreeze Homes - I oversee both the Lettings and Sales and dealing with our investors. I had previously worked in the industry in Cardiff and was lucky enough to get the opportunity to work where I live and jumped at the chance! What do you love most about Penarth? Your favourite gems in the town...I genuinely do love Penarth. I moved here as a first time buyer about 10 years ago and in that time have got married and now have two children who enjoy Penarth as much as me. My daughter has just started primary school and the community feel here has personally only got better while I have lived here - especially now that I’m working here. There are so many good things to do here, my favourite is a walk down to the beach first thing with the dog and getting a coffee but, the restaurants and bars are great in the evening here to! Villa Napoli is probably my favourite!

What does Penarth offer Brad Young the new home buyer? Well as you can tell - I’m very biased. But as an “outsider” moving to the area and also selling all over Cardiff, I do think Penarth is special. Whether its the Primary and Secondary Schools, multiple train stations with regular trains into Cardiff, the Pier and the Cardiff Bay Barrage or the bustling town centre with new independent retailers opening all of the time, there is something for everyone here. Why is Seabreeze Homes different to other agents? We are an independent company so our soul focus is about making our clients happy and providing them with a service that’s specifically tailored to them. Some people will automatically choose a name without doing any research. Selling or Renting a property you own is a massive financial commitment and should be with a company that you can trust. All the staff who work here live in the town and know
the area very well - we have 5 star reviews and that’s something we are very proud of. As we are an independent estate agent - we can also adjust our costs and fees accordingly to the client and property which normally means we can give a lower price than our competitors but with what we believe to be a much better service.
From everybody here at Seabreeze Homes, we’d like to wish all our clients (old and new) a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. If you do ever have any queries or are thinking about selling or renting your property in the future, please do pop into the office for a chat or email me on bradyoung@seabreezehomes.co.uk and I’ll be very happy to help.

We have made kitchens for tiny, terraced houses in the City, traditional, modern detached homes in the suburbs and rambling Victorian properties in the seaside town of Penarth, all with the same care and attention to detail, no matter the size. But in 2017 we finished our flagship project, an enormous new build property in one of the most prestigious areas of Cardiff.

Our clients were able to design and spec the whole house from scratch and we were lucky enough to be chosen to make furniture for every room in the property, from the downstairs cloakroom to the en-suite bathroom. We worked closely with them throughout the build, hard hats a must in the early days on site, and the result is a lovely home filled
Lifestyle with beautiful furniture. The kitchen is the showstopper though, with it’s curved seating booth for four, a professional bespoke range cooker (as used by the legendary Raymond Blanc himself), plenty of workspace, a boiling water tap, a feature chimney mantle, which frames the cooking area, and a separate walk-in pantry, hidden behind larder doors, the stuff that dreams are made of. Once the kitchen was completed we went on to create a utility room, boot room for storing coats and shoes, a bespoke dressing room in the master bedroom, wardrobes in all three of the guest bedrooms, bespoke cabinetry in the master bathroom, display shelving in the lounge and one-off mirrors throughout the house. For Chalkhouse this was the dream project of 2017, lovely clients to work with and an opportunity to create something really special.

is a little bit of a stretch these days isn’t it – the run up calendar is chock a block. I’ve booked tickets for the santa train, ballet, school play, school fete, church nativity, work night out and possibly the panto (if we can fit it in)! The twinkling lights have started to spread from home to home, and the adverts have sold us another ‘must have’. A certain message of a humble birth has certainly disappeared somewhere! In trying to keep things simple in terms of gifts I heard a good saying – something you want, something you need, something to wear, and something to read. Something I want is less stuff please Santa! Despite best efforts, it’s a good motto that suddenly pings out of your head in the excitement and bustle of the big shop!

Woody’s Lodge Launches Corporate Partnership with Masons Moving Group Penarth View recently attended the launch of Woody’s Lodge, a local veteran’s charity, created after Penarth born Royal Marine Paul “Woody” Woodland sadly lost his life in a training exercise in Afghanistan, whose mission today is to create a safe and peaceful space for veterans. At the event, I met with members of the Mason family who are supporting Woody’s Lodge, a cause close to their hearts as their own father, Eric Mason, was himself an RAF veteran. I knew of Masons Moving Group, as they have been moving and storing homes and businesses across the Vale of Glamorgan, and further afield, for more years than I can remember, and at the event I learnt more about the Group of companies that they have become today.
Gordon Mason (far left) with the team at Woodys 56
Penarth View
Still a family run group of businesses, with over 100 years behind them, Masons, today, are currently in their fourth generation of family members and operate three diverse companies out of their site on Priority Enterprise Park, just 10 minutes from Penarth: The Business Centre (Cardiff ) Ltd, Masons Self Storage Ltd and Masons Moving Group Ltd.
Gordon Mason, chatted with me saying “We are proud of our heritage and believe it’s our dedication to responding to our customers changing needs that means we have stayed at the forefront of our different industries” Last year, at Masons Self Storage, they undertook a huge project to create a state-of-the-art, 24/7 storage facility responding to a need in the Vale for professional, secure and exible storage solutions. They are only a year down the line since opening, and Masons Self Storage are creating another 220 storage units, ready by Spring 2018, in response to huge demand from their customers. Next to Masons Self Storage Centre is The Business Centre Ltd, which gives business owners the opportunity to combine working out of a professional serviced office facility with a base to store their stock or archives, “It’s a perfect combination for businesses today” James Mason told us. The Business Centre, who recently celebrated their 10th birthday, have actively supported and helped grow more than 300 businesses in the Vale at their Serviced Offices and Co-working facilities. Within their community of businesses, they have some of Wales’ top 35 under 35’s and are constantly looking for ways to help their businesses thrive!
It is this dedication to innovation that has kept this Vale family group of businesses constantly improving and expanding, whilst satisfying their many different customers needs. Working at the heart of the community here in the Vale, they also actively get involved with local initiatives; in addition to supporting Woody’s Lodge, The Masons Group have supported Penarth’s very own Belle Vue Music in the Park, are sponsors of Barry Athletics Bowls Club and raise money every year for Macmillan Cancer. From humble beginnings of a horse-and-cart company, Masons today has grown to become an international removals company, a dynamic, professional Self Storage provider and a centre of excellence for local businesses to grow and thrive!
