We have been busy collaborating with some wonderful local characters including new business owner Narelle Dancey who wrote a feature about Street Food Fever which seems vibrant at the moment. We are also thrilled to hear that Picnic Penarth is back in town on 29th/30th April. We have a variety of interesting articles including sports reporter Dyfri Owen’s

Love Local Coffee Penarth has always been known as a sleepy seaside town. Although that culture is all about to change to an awake and caffeinated seaside town. I mean who doesn’t love a coffee on a cold day? Penarths café culture is on the up and quickly! So here’s a little guide to some of our favourite places. 4

Penarth View

Love Local Coffee First up if you’re after an artisan coffee and some quality food to accompany it, check out Waterloo Tea. This coffee shop is situated right in the middle of Penarth in the old Washington Buildings being home to art displays and a very modern yet Asian influenced interior. You can easily people watch from the windows and it’s a great location to just watch the world go by. Known as a tea room they boast a variety of teas from multiple regions around the world which are all served to perfection and come with their own instructions. They have the same attention to detail to coffee as well serving up perfect flat whites and any artisan coffee you’re after. If your a real caffeine enthusiast and want to know more, have a chat with the staff and they will happily educate you further with what’s in the hopper. It’s a perfect

place for a tea lover and a coffee lover, situated right in the heart of Penarth.

comfortable atmosphere and is truly a hidden gem.

Everyone who visits any town and wants to indulge in the cafe culture is on the hunt for the ‘secret gem’. That locally owned place only the local knowledge will get you to. We have one right here in the Vale. Ok, it’s not quite Penarth but it’s a small drive away in Dinas Powys. This locally run and owned café is the real heart of what coffee culture stands for. The Plug owned and run by Pete and Rachel Lewis who even more impressively serve their own roasted coffee! Pete’s the man if you’re after a truly individual coffee, using his own roast he serves up filter, espresso, espresso with milk. He bakes in house all the cakes you will see on display (and smell). It’s a real family run business with a focus on artisan coffee. It’s a small but yet

I know what you’re thinking but where can I take the kids and have a mothers meeting?! Penarth is known for its seaside position and one place I can really recommend is Penarth Pier Pavillion they serve a range of teas, coffee, food and have events happening on a regular basis. The coffee shop is located in the pier pavilion building itself overlooking the ocean. The building has recently been restored to its now modern aesthetics. It boasts an art gallery which is constantly changing and a small cinema upstairs... oh and don’t forget the beach of course which is literally beneath you. It’s a place with plenty of variety if you’re bringing the whole family. By Jack Hayward Penarth View

coast to coast Each issue we will be setting off on our travels to enjoy what seems to be the buzz word of the moment – a staycation. We will be travelling along the UK coastline for a weekend and reporting back about our experience on where to stay, eat & drink. We are back and fresh faced from our Winter escape to the coast on a Hygge Retreats weekend, a lovely experience with a small group of guests and our host Tanya Lynch. The location: Langland Cove Guesthouse, Rotherslade Road, Mumbles The venue: A luxurious coastal B&B with four en-suite individually styled rooms, huge kitchen, stylish lounge with cosy wood burning stove and designer sofas. The property is a real mix of industrial, ethnic and contemporary styling. The rooms: Comfy beds, funky lighting, gorgeous bedding and throws, bathrooms with special touches like complimentary earplugs & eco-friendly toiletries. I was lucky enough to be

Coast Life able to see the sea from my room and enjoyed sitting in bed with the sunlight streaming in each morning. Activities: There was a relaxed agenda for the Hygge Retreats weekend planned by our Tanya, this mostly included eating, chatting, reading books and magazines which were thoughtfully provided for guests. We made the most of our beach location with a few coastal walks and coffees in yummy cafes along the way. Nearby: The guesthouse is a very short walk to Rotherslade and Langland beaches and there are the cute and cosy Surf Side Cafes at both beaches. If you fancy some retail therapy, Newton Road isn’t far and has some lovely independent boutiques, bars and galleries, our favourites were Oyster Gallery, Pebble & Kindle House.

What’s so special: I was really looking forward to relaxing on the retreat and escaping real life - running my business Bespoke Admin and looking after my young family – for a weekend by the sea. I was lucky enough to share the company of fellow Business Women Penarth ladies – Liz, Jo, Tamzin, Lesley, & Leigharne – owner of new hair salon The Hair Business opening in Penarth in March. Overview:This is the perfect location for coastal chilling, beach walking, independent retail delights, beach café hopping and the guesthouse provides a cosy and on-trend environment to relax and unwind. It’s a real find! By Sarah Thompson Hygge Retreats – for more information on dates and locations contact host Tanya Lynch.

STyle life A new season of style is here ~ let’s take a look at what it’s all about this Spring! So the Pantone colour for Spring/Summer 2017 is ‘Greenery’! It’s bright, it’s cheery and it’s predominantly a warm colour. Along with this colour, the shops are adorned with bright oranges, yellows and easy to wear teal. This is wonderful news for those that suit yellow-based tones and can take the warm brighter colours. For those of us that suit more blue based cooler tones, fear not, there are some popular hues out there too, such as cerise and blush pink. Topshop

M&S

Based on these vibrant and zesty colours for Spring, it’s a perfect time to embrace this positivity and push yourself out of your comfort zone. Think opening scenes of the film ‘La La Land’ and go for an overcoat in cerise or bright yellow, instead of the usual ‘safe’ navy, black or taupe. This is the season to push the boundaries and not look out of place! I fell in love with this floral teal jumper from H&M. It has that extra interest with the pattern and is a great way to have an on trend piece for a low price label. Fashion should be fun, so play with it and let your inner creativity come out. Embroidery is huge right now and I love these jeans from Zara that make denim look ultra feminine.

Style Life

You will be seeing fluted sleeves a lot too, perhaps not terribly practical but ‘oh so stylish!” I do love this more pared down blouse from M&S in a very soft blue - a great option if brights aren’t your thing. Another colour that remains popular, is blush pink and I adore this ruffle jumper also from H&M - it makes a statement but in a subtle way. These two shades are really versatile and work easily with denim pieces or more formal colours such as black, navy and grey.

M&S

If you love some of these bright colours but feel a little apprehensive, a great way to introduce them to your look is through accessories. Try treating yourself to a watch, a bag or a pair of shoes and get used to expressing your chosen ‘colour pop’ that way first. These fun and funky pieces really caught my eye. Aquazzura

Warehouse

My ultimate ‘wow’ piece has to be this Warehouse blouse that I spotted recently. I love the vibrant colour, against the delicate print and the slightly dramatic cut. It is a juxtaposition all in one piece, which can be worn in so many ways.

Home Life open shelving

Spring time is upon us and there’s every reason to be excited. So it’s time to tidy up, sort out the clutter and prepare for the long Summer nights gathered around the kitchen table enjoying the best of times with the people you love. When it comes to kitchen storage, there are some fantastic products on the market. Here are a few of the trends for 2017 to help you sort out your space, organise your belongings and declutter your worktops so that you can take back control of the most important room in your home. Open Shelving Rather than filling your walls with yet more cabinets, why not consider a simple solution that adds a splash of minimalism, looks great and sets your kitchen apart from all the rest.

Wall panel storage

Wall panel storage Wall mounted panel storage systems are also incredibly popular and are available in a huge range of colours, finishes and textures. Incorporated into the panel is a stylish aluminium rail, into which slots a multitude of beautifully designed storage devices that offer practicality and style to the way you organise your kitchen. Lemans Lemans are an essential accessory for any corner unit which is awkward to fill without crawling around on your hands and knees. Wirework Internal wirework solutions that can make a hard to reach shelf come to you.

lemans

Springtime is my favourite time in the kitchen retail industry. People come to me with their plans for a Summer transformation and I love to help develop those ideas into something truly special. I genuinely believe that a loved kitchen lives at the heart of every happy home. So create a kitchen you love and see the difference it makes you and those around you.

With three of the four Penarth mens teams in the thick of promotion battles, this promises to be an exciting end of season run. The 1st team stand atop of Conference North, with promotion in their own hands to the Championship for next season. With very few blips, the team have welcomed new players and have jelled into a very formidable side and boast the most deadly attack and meanest defence in the league.

Home Life

Exciting end of season for hockey clubs opportunity for our oldest and youngest players to show what they can (still!!) do. The 3rds have a chance at promotion and the 4ths are happy to complete their first season in over 25 years.

The 2nds are lying in third place, only two points off second place. A tough start has been followed by some momentum building performances and things are looking good providing they can field strong teams for the rest of the campaign.

Penarth Ladies have a tough end of season run ahead of them for all three teams. The 1sts got off to an excellent start under new coach Dafydd Tomos and went into the Christmas break unbeaten, sitting a close second in the league. Unfortunately they suffered a narrow defeat on their first game back but it’s still all to play for in the fight for title. Needing some big wins and three points they will be relying on captain Naomi Edwards to lead the way to the top.

The 3rds and 4ths have both reformed in recent years and are now thriving. Both play in the bottom league but provide an excellent

The 3rds struggled with a lot of changes in the team week to week, translating into poor results and seeing them sitting at the bottom

of division 2. This does not reflect the standard and determination with which they’ve played. The second half of the season started with a new captain, Helen O’Neill, and a 7-0 victory, so the team are hoping to continue this form into the back end of the season to avoid relegation danger. The 2nds had a mixed start to the season but have managed to keep promotion hopes alive, with the team goals tally already topping that of the end of last season. To have a chance of finishing in the top two, they need to win almost all their remaining games. A tall order, but they are ready for the challenge. Overall an exciting climax in store for all Penarth ladies teams this season!

USEFUL TIP Over Christmas a number of people called having problems with their lights tripping. We all know if the lights go out it can be a nightmare, so a quick thing to try is if you have an outside light controlled by a light switch, switch it off and try the light trip switch again. If the lights turn on then you know the problem is with the outside light. The problem is usually caused by water leaking into the light.

environment with good home cooked food.

Taste of Penarth

Local residents and tourists looking for a latte or traditional cup of tea are on constant rotation in this bustling cute space opposite Penarth library. Named after the Willmore brothers who built the Washington Building in 1938. The Willmore brothers built the Washington buildings in the grounds of the Washington hotel. The building incorporated the Washington luxury cinema. They developed the hotel into apartments which sit behind the shop frontage. They lived there later in life themselves. The story of the Willmores brothers is inside the cafe and a really interesting read. Willmore’s offers a really friendly atmosphere. The interior is cool and contemporary mixed with nostalic memories via art or photographs. The wifi code is hidden in one of the messages on the wall. Owner Charlotte is well known in the town and will rarely be seen standing still, good banter can be heard from customers and staff, the latter pouring a strong coffee with kick. “This coffee’s amazing,” says a local regular exiting with a macchiato-sized takeaway. Arguably becoming one of the more popular coffee shops in Penarth. Breakfast and brunch menus are served from 8.30am to catch parents on route to school and the city slickers before catching their train into Cardiff.

There is a delightful lunch menu with plenty of sandwiches for lunch. The lunch menu has signature dishes like Willmore’s pie and ploughmans block and - of course - there’s avo on toast. Daily specials are presented on their uber cool brown paper roll. Don’t miss the ‘door stop’ size slices of toast with homemade jam – perfect start to your day, whatever the mood. Not forgetting they are open Friday & Saturday for evening dining.

Chez Francis How true is true french cuisine? Francis has chosen to embrace his most recent french restaurant business with gusto! Nothing about this exquisite venue is low-key, carefully lit and oozing with moody french colours says this is a restaurant opened with a creative design team and a heart full of dreams. No tablecloths but comfortably smart, the seating plan has been arranged to offer ambience and enough space for private conversation. The menu doesn’t read impulsive but the Petits Plats or as translated Little Plates does whet the appetite with lots of little flavours including... Tarte Tatin a L’oignon (french onion tart with a mixed leaf salad) £5.95. Camembert au Four (Baked Camembert served with fig marmalade and toasted bread) £8.95. Galette De Pomme De Terre (Potato & Onion cake served with Aioli) £3.95. It’s a pleasure to see a kitchen that has the confidence to offer such well prepared french country cuisine. Our two course lunch consisted of a hearty Chicken Livers in a brandy cream sauce

complimented with Parmentier Potatoes just perfect on a cold damp Tuesday. Dessert was a delightful chocolate gateau which was suprisingly light but in my opinion did have room to have more of a chocolate kick – coming from a sugar addict who needs a dense pudding, I would have preferred a smaller size dessert and more of an intense hit of dark chocolate. Like all the main plates, too, it seems designed to spur on a good romp through the wine list. The cellar has an eclectic mix of French wines and the staff have an extensive knowledge and are more than happy to reccomend a bottle. It would be rude not to enjoy the French style tapas served at the bar with a French cocktail. By Tanya Lynch

If you’re looking for true traditional french food then look no further. Chez Francis is a delightful local restaurant and perfect for a last minute working lunch. Don’t forget the restaurant is open 12-3pm on Sundays, it’s the perfect end to a busy week. Penarth View

By Dyfri Owen - Director of PPP physio, Physio to Cardiff RFC and Football Association of Wales Nick, I’ve got no idea what to talk about with you first as there is so much to discuss, so I’ll go chronologically! Where did you grow up? I was born in Hampshire, but when I was eight we moved to Narberth in Pembrokeshire, and I’ve been based in Wales pretty much ever since.

What subjects did you enjoy in school? I enjoyed all the sciences, history, and especially Geology at A-level. I remember going on a field trip in the Brecon Beacons as part of my Geology course that introduced me to the joys of caving. I really enjoyed it and guess it was really my first real experience of adventure sports. By the end of my A-levels, I really did have the bug for exploring and heard about the British Schools Exploration Society that was set up by a member of Captain Scott’s fated South Pole expedition. This aims to give young people the opportunity to experience exploration and adventure. I went through a rigorous selection process and was given a place on a 7-week expedition to Greenland in 1988, so long as I could raise £3000! I succeeded and consequently was part of the largest ever expedition to have stayed north of the Arctic

I took a break between my second and final years and went to work for an Australian mining company doing gold exploration in the Queensland outback. This was tough. I went from living in a University hall of residence to sleeping in the back of a Toyota pickup truck hiding from a Canadian bank robber on the run who could get a bit unpredictable after a few beers around the camp fire! Circle. We did some really useful work: Eastern Greenland has a chequered mining past, and as a result, there is lots of left-over stuff like fuel drums and old machinery, and because of the permafrost, these things would remain a scar on the environment for thousands of years. We spent some time cleaning up the mess and also started mapping areas of uncharted territory in the Stauning Alps. I led a small group to climb a previously un-summited mountain that was only 1800m high, but we had to climb every metre of it from sea level, and it was four gruelling days of climbing and crossing glacial crevasses and mountains of moraine rubble to get to the top. We were then entitled to name it. As Prince Andrew was the patron of our expedition, we named the mountain after his daughter and called it Beatricefjeld who was born three days previously.

Did you always know you wanted to be an Exploration Geologist? No, not really. I didn’t know what to do a degree in. My father gave me some really good advice when he told me just to do something I enjoyed and was passionate about. Having enjoyed Geology at A-level, I decided I wanted to do Geology, and I was successful in my application to Cardiff University (because it was close to the sea and Limestone country). I decided to bias my degree towards Mining and Mineral Exploration as I felt it was more applied and I would be more employable, plus it allowed me to spend lots of time underground in caves!! In fact, I spent most of my first two years at Uni underground digging and exploring new passages beneath the Brecon Beacons and the time above ground in lectures never quite being clean of mud. I also spent a lot of time mapping and drilling at an amazing facility the Uni had at

So, you graduated with a BSc in Geology, what was your first job? Well, my experience in Oz had taught me that I wanted to be my own boss. I, therefore, set up a company called TerraDat Geophysics with a good friend called Rob McDonald who was completing his PhD at the time. Nobody was really applying geophysical mapping expertise. We had to do shallow ground investigation for the environmental industry, which was rapidly evolving in the early 90’s. We started working for companies who manage landfill sites where we could map the internal structure of their sites to locate things like underground fires and liquid contamination from just surface mapping. TerraDat is now in its 25th year, and it employs 20 staff. We’ve maintained our links with Cardiff Uni and both Rob and I are Honorary Lecturers, believing strongly in sharing our expertise. also allows us to recruit the best students who may come and work for us. Most of my business interests are borne from my core skills of making maps and a love of the great outdoors. About 20 years ago, another of our Uni friends Robert Davies started making weather maps for the mountains. We were really into snowboarding and wanted to know when and where we could snowboard in places like the Brecon Beacons and in New Zealand. In 1999, we decided to cover all the popular ski resorts in the world and launched a new website called Snow-Forecast.com. This grew to be the biggest resource for skiers and snowboarders on the web, and we get almost 18 million users per year. This was so successful we developed and in 2005 launched sister sites for other activities such as surf, mountaineering and general weather. People are always amazed

that this incredibly popular web business that services the whole world is based in Penarth Road. Perhaps we should move to Switzerland! I love snowboarding too. How did you get into it? That’s a funny story actually. We were out in Spain to meet a farmer’s co-operative to help them solve problems in irrigating their olive tree plantations. They forgot we were coming, so the meeting never happened, so being a few hours drive from the mountains of Sierra Nevada, after checking the snow-forecast, we decided to go there. On the way, we bought some cheap snowboards from a supermarket (that turned out to be kid’s size), but we still had a great time. We continued to use those boards for quite a few years to come, and I think our own kids are now learning on them!

We try to fit in as many trips to the mountains as we can every year. We check our website and depending on where the best snow will be, buy cheap flights, hire a car and drive there. We never have a problem getting accommodation as we often end up in quiet less well-known places and pretty much always have great snow conditions. What’s the best place you’ve ever boarded? That’s easy. It’s undoubtedly the Banff area of British Colombia, Canada but I’d really love to head out to Japan some day. How about surfing? Based on where I’ve been it would be a toss-up between West Ireland and Brittany. We often hold our business meetings there in the summer and in Switzerland in the winter. How about more locally? Depends a lot on the combination of local factors like wind, tide and swell coming together. Normally it would be the reefs on Gower or sometimes breaks closer to home, Ogmore or Southerndown. Are there any other sports you enjoy? Originally I got into mountain biking. Then I started road biking to boost my fitness and I realised I enjoyed that too to the point that I now own around eight bikes! I also did the full Cardiff Marathon without training at all, testing my philosophy that endurance can be as much

I’ve also got into SUP (stand-up paddle boarding) last summer with the lovely guys at SUP Club in Penarth. I particularly like SUP exploring and like to launch from Penarth and head up the river Ely and see how far I can get without being accosted by swans or local kids armed with air rifles! Have you got any other hobbies? I love photography. I always have. I was in the photography club in school (well I was the club as it was only me). More recently I was lucky enough to be hired to accompany a National Geographic Expedition to Antarctica as a nature photographer coach on a ship. I now like to combine my love for adventure, cycling, SUP and photography. I recently teamed up with a couple of guys, one of whom is a well-known food photographer called Craig Howarth and his mate Paul Tambini. They formed a collective of outdoor adventurers called SA_AdventuresUK, posting pictures of their activities on Instagram. We got on like a house on fire and are now great mates who like nothing more than to go on crazy micro adventures. We’re planning to cycle from South to North Wales via the highest mountains on special bikes

called fat bikes, carrying all our provisions with us and hopefully capturing the breath-taking Welsh countryside in our video and photo blogs en route. Another time we combined fat biking and SUP by cycling to the foot of Pen y Fan and then paddling the glacial lake on inflatable back packable boards. We then took one of the boards up the the summit of Pen Y Fan to claim the highest SUP in South Wales!

Lifestyle

a mental challenge as a physical one. I recently started doing regular yoga sessions with some wonderful people I’ve met locally which I think is important to overcome muscular tightness from riding and desk jobs.

SA_Adventures now have loads of followers on Instagram and other social media channels, and because of this, we’re fortunate to partner as brand ambassadors with some great outdoor brands including Skogstad UK (based in Barry), the eco-friendly outdoor clothing company Howies and even an Italian bike manufacturer. Our aim is not just to test our minds and physical endurance, but through our Instagram photos and videos, inspire people to go and explore the local outdoor world that exists just beyond their doorsteps. South Wales has some amazing coastline, countryside and mountains and I want people to wake up in the morning and think today, I will go and climb that hill I’ve looked at for years, or explore that trail with my kids. Thank you very much for meeting me. Your career seems to have uniquely been able to combine your business and your love of adventure sports and the great outdoors in an incredibly inspiring way. It was an eye opener, but seemed to validate what I’d felt about running a small business in a town like Penarth. People buy from people, and the person who delivers the service or product is an important consideration when making the buying decision. For a while now, Candid’s main marketing drive has been in comfort marketing. Our marketing 42

Candid’s Instagram, for example, isn’t used to directly sell; the feed features current projects and interesting clients, alongside snippets of personal life. We build trust with existing and potential customers by allowing them a partial glimpse into what makes us tick. Candid’s sistercompany Penarth Post recently ran a community project with schools and older people’s homes to promote cross-generation communication through a Pen(arth) Pal scheme. It’s more important than ever to understand that people buy from people. Small and

mobile businesses will shine when they deliver carefully considered products and services where the experience matters most. Some of Penarth’s newest businesses are doing just this. Willmore’s 1938 offers simple, well-made food with classic decor that anchors to hyper-local history. Not Socks Again, a curated gift store, recently opened a successful pop-up event to build awareness and introduce their unique concept to the town. The Roaming Caravan Co and Vantage Point Events are both mobile businesses, who attend weddings, birthdays - any event in fact, and serve up classic drinks and cocktails. With their respective converted caravan and Citroën H van as backdrops, both conjure up romantic memories of a happier time.

Business Life 1min film a fabulous collaboration between local media companies Lynchpin and Jim Rich Film is a prime example of local innovation. This project has been set up to showcase and promote the stories within local towns. Tanya and James believe each community has a story to tell and each story matters. Community spirit at its best!

Penarth is a thriving town, and it just goes to show that small is beautiful. It proves that small and agile businesses rooted in the community, where the experience excels, can go on to achieve great things. Small town cool is where it’s at and Penarth is leading the way. Food Fever It seems everywhere you go you can’t escape a ‘pop-up’. A few years ago this concept would be alien to us all but now it’s spread across all major UK cities and it’s slowly trickling down into local communities. 52

Penarth View

Business Life What’s a ‘pop-up’ I hear you ask? Well, to put it simply, it’s an event or business that has no ‘fixed’ location. Businesses can turn up at one location one day, set up, trade, then move onto the next location the next day. It’s bringing business to places that are no longer used/have alternative uses such car parks/vacant shops/ public parks to create an event in those areas. In Cardiff we have Street Food Circus, a pop-up event in the summer based around food & drink. This has moved locations around the city, firstly in a car park then last year was held in Sophia Gardens. This allows businesses that trade from vehicles or stalls to set-up and trade any time they wish. And it’s not just small businesses and their vehicles taking part in these events, big name chefs and permanent fixture restaurants see the appeal in the ‘pop-up’ culture and want

a part of the action. Award-winning chef Anand George & The Purple Poppadom took part in SFC with their ‘Tukka Tuk’ and local restauranteur James Sommerin also took part in Picnic Penarth last year. As the owner of a mobile bar - The Roaming Caravan Co. I know the benefits of owning a business that attends ‘pop-up’ events. It brings communities together and offers something different for the public. Want a pizza, a coffee, a curry and a glass of prosecco all within 5 footsteps of each other? Well, attend a pop up and you can! Picnic Penarth was a great success last year with over 10,000 visitors over the weekend. It was great to see so many small, local businesses come together and put on an event

which the people of Penarth greatly enjoyed. It showed that there is an appetite for more events like this within the community and I for one can’t wait for The Roaming Caravan to be involved in bringing something new, exciting and different to the beautiful town of Penarth.

Picnic Penarth will be taking place on 29th & 30th April and again on 9th & 10th September 2017. By Narelle Dancey

Bethan Elfyn About Town

Top ten kids hangouts in Penarth and Cardiff Blink and there’s another school holiday looming, plans are made, day trips organised, and prayers for good weather. As one with a lively 5 year old, and babe in arms, I’ve been commissioned by Penarth view to think of the best hangouts for filling the staycations ahead. Of course we are blessed in South Wales with the natural resource of country and coast on our doorstep, and beautiful beaches and fantastic forests just a train ride away, and there’s always the joy of the adventure ahead as you discover new favourites each year - here’s just a few of our regular haunts. 60

Penarth Pier - Clifftop Park Every aspect of the seafront in Penarth is an old fashioned adventure. Walk down from Beach Road through the park, past the aviary to the pavilion, either side of the pier is a different experience for a child - from climbing the sea wall rocks on the right to building stone castles and chasing waves on the left - promenade up the hill to a favourite of ours the Clifftop park and cafe - and if you’ve still got the energy, walk along till you reach the woods, and the winding coastal path all the way to Lavernock. Taff Trail When the sun is streaming through the dappled leaves above the path, and you stop for cuppa and cake at Fforest Farm, then continue through

to Castell Coch, its just a magical day out from spring to indian summer, and I look forward to seeing my daughter complete it on her own bike this year… or one way at least! Barry Beach We love this beach any time of year, especially in winter, when the crowds aren’t so intense, but the new pathways and walkways are just perfect for scooters and prams, and plenty to do in every direction. Funfair, beach, scootering across the beach huts, and walk along to Jackson Bay. A colourful, bustling day out in any weather - cap off your day in the innovation park with the Hang Fire BBQ gals.

Porthkerry Country Park, Barry Drive down the winding forest road from Barry, and the vista opens before you - the formidable Porthkerry Viaduct towers over a small cafe pitch up a picnic or even use one of the ready made BBQ spaces, and wander the caves along the edge of the pebbly beach. Roath Park and lake When the ducklings are hatched in Spring is one of the best times to walk around the Roath lake, although its also a feisty time for the ever ‘familiar’ Swans, so be careful with toddlers. Also boasting a bustling cafe, ice cream sellers, large play park, and even a special victorian green house, its all here for a packed day out. We’ve often set off from Joe’s Ice Cream, on Wellfield Road in order to have an even bigger walk before reaching the boating lake. Caerphilly Mountain Ranch The Fairy Woods and Gruffalo Trail beyond the sandy play park and hobbit homes, rabbits, horses, and acres of running space in every direction - unquestionably one of the absolute

favourites. Its worth trying to beat the crowds by getting here early on weekends, and especially bank holidays. St Fagans I’m naturally drawn to the village and the recreations of the past at St Fagans, and stop off for some freshly baked scones, bread rolls or sweets as we trundle past the crowded green on a sunny bank holiday; but its the acres of space nearer the manor house that my daughter and pals will always enjoy - we can usually find a clump of trees and they will play make believe running around in circles for hours, a must for any Cardiff visitors. Cardiff Bay Barrage Just the best pathway for practicing scooting, biking, rollerblading and even just strolling with the pram. We tend to park on the Custom House side, and then are rewarded with plenty

of choices for coffee shops and food outlets before heading back, via park and ice cream. The business of the barrage on weekends is testament to how these landscaped paths and accompanying views across Cardiff, the bay and Penarth are some of the finest in Cardiff. Cosmeston Lakes Wildlife, parks, bike and stroller paths, and a cafe - I’m starting to see a pattern to my choices! Cosmeston has a circular route that’s just right for little legs, with a wide park area half way, and its a great spot for a picnic on a warm day, or a brisk walk when not so. Feeding the birds is a great activity for the little ones, before they are rewarded with ice creams too. If you’re still looking for inspiration, then Cardiffmummysays.com has written about 67 things to do around Cardiff and South Wales many of which are on my list to try out this year. Penarth View

Pe nar t h Peo p l e Un c ove r e d Favourite past time: Skiing - planning a trip for around February time is always a winner, the perfect way to fight off those post-christmas blues! You can’t beat a holiday away with a big group of friends, blue skies, good snow and of course, good après. What can’t you live without? My iMac (essential for creating my designs and products), my running shoes (essential for fitness) and wine (essential for sanity!)

Cath Jones Age: 29 Occupation: Owner of Sadler Jones Best known for: The girl who designs Greeting Cards and Stationery for a living! First claim to fame: Spotting one of my greeting cards on Ian Beale’s mantelpiece in an episode of Eastenders – pretty sure that was the day I realised I’d made it as a designer! 66

Biggest temptation: Booking flights. I absolutely love to travel and I find it hard to say no to a budget airline special! Best life moment? Joining the royal family to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in Buckingham Palace was pretty surreal. We got to eat a very posh picnic in HRH’s back garden and then attend a concert on the Mall with legends such as Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney and Madness. It was a great day to be part of history and to feel very stereotypically British. At the end of the night we snuck down to the front in hope of some celebrity spots - I’m not sure I’ll

ever get over seeing a golf cart whizz by with Cliff Richard riding shotgun and Kylie Minogue sat on Tom Jones lap in the back drinking champers from the bottle! What would a typical day in your life involve? I wake up around 7 and struggle to get out of bed for a good while! During this time, I catch up on social media – working in my industry it’s essential that I know what’s trending and I follow lots of great design companies in the US/ Australia. I use this time to collect inspiration, brainstorm and plan my day ahead. Despite being quite sleepy I often find having a fresh mind helps ideas come my way! I then get up and do a workout – this kicks me into gear

What do you love most about the Penarth? The Location. How lucky are we to live in a beautiful town next to sea that is full of lovely parks, nice people and fantastic places to eat? But we’re even more lucky to be next to an up and coming capital city and only a stones throw away from the beautiful beaches of the Gower and Pembrokeshire. To top it all off, the Brecon Beacons are just a short drive away. It’s so nice to have the “small community” feeling but with a land of adventure of on our doorstep – it’s unique. How has Penarth changed over the years? I grew up in Penarth but having lived in London for last few years, I’ve only recently relocated back. It’s amazing to see how much the town has changed over the years. I love the fact that

Social Life

and I head off to work about 9.30. I’m lucky enough to share studio space in Cardiff Bay with 9 others – we all run our own businesses but crave the normality of leaving the house in the morning! My working day’s are pretty long right now as I’m in the process of setting up my new stationery company but I’m really lucky to absolutely love what I do. In the evening I can be found running around the bay, having dinner with friends or training with Penarth Women FC (shout out to the ladies!)

independent business in Penarth continues to boom and the latest addition of places such as Chez Francis, Fauvette and Willmores show it’s going from strength to strength. The redevelopment of the pier was such a great turning point for Penarth and it’s so nice to see the rise in visitors to our lovely seafront. Favourite gems of Penarth? You can’t beat a good glass of red and the camembert at Chez Francis, a cup of tea at the Pier Pavillion on a sunny day, a pizza and a Peroni outside the Glendale on a summers evening and who can say no to a goblet of gin at Bar 44 on a Friday night!
