Before you wed, make it legal

n the midst of meetings with stylists, photographers and venue staff, one small but major detail might slip your mind whilst planning a wedding: making the whole thing legal. No matter whether you are an out-oftown couple with a destination wedding or a local (and in spite of the size and cost of the wedding), everyone has to obtain and file a marriage license. The good news is that Taos County and New Mexico laws are fairly standard. Couples can get married on the spot provided they have an ordained or licensed clergyman or woman, or a judge. These are the only legal officiates the state

recognizes. And to top it off, two witnesses, not including the officiate, must sign on the dotted lines. Before you visit the Taos County Clerk’s Office, make sure you have photo identification with your birth date. Also, the bride and groom must be present to sign the application. There is a $25 filing fee. The marriage license book at the clerk’s office is open and available to the public. Also, the license is public record and can be published in The Taos News or any other publication. Media-shy couples can request a “do not publish” notice. — Staff Report

or any bride-to-be, looking anything less than amazing on the big day is simply unexceptable. Luckily for those getting married in Taos, the area has more than a few reputable salons, one of which is Salon Marjorie. Located on historic Ledoux Street, Salon Marjorie’s offers brides a relaxed setting for their beauty needs. “I opened my salon after spending years in Mexico and returning to Taos where I needed a job,” salon owner Marjorie Olsen said. Olsen graduated from beauty school and high school simultaneously, and then studied a European style of cutting. She continues the process she learned in her viga-ceilinged shop. With three stylists, an esthetician and a nail artist, Salon Marjorie offers brides and their wedding parties all the beauty services needed for the big day.

14

A TAOS WEDDING

“Brides are usually very organized and we see brides who are almost planning backward from their wedding day,” Olsen said. Acknowledging that not everyone has time to plan six months ahead and that it is not in everyone’s personality, Olsen and salon esthetician Missy Jennings encourage prospective brides and their bridesmaids to come in ahead for organization and planning help. “Taos is such a great place and such a spiritual place. Our process is really about preparing the bride for the next stage in her life. We help to relax and pamper our brides as well as make them even more beautiful,” Olsen says. “A wedding is a huge thing. We will open early if needed, or travel to a location with the bridal party. We like to schedule at least two appointments to do a practice updo. That way there are no surprises. There is higher energy level and level of focus when we work with brides.”

Like Jennings who relocated to Taos last year from New York, people come to Taos from all over. With a focus on the local women of Taos, Jennings looks to help regular clients and bridal clients establish a beauty routine that builds great eyebrows, great hair and great skin. “I work with all my clients to create a beauty maintenance routine so that when a special day does occur, the client is already looking her

best. We work with a lot of clients via word of mouth and we cater to mostly repeat clients,” she says. Jennings finds it interesting that many brides do not think about having their eyebrows shaped before their wedding. “Women show up for makeup on the big day and their brows aren’t done,” she said. “I often have to shape a brow so the bridal services continues on Page 16

makeup looks right. Brow maintenance can be done prior to the wedding day and like hair updos, makeup can be tried ahead of time.” Although Jennings offers facials, makeup application and waxing, she specializes in brow design and spends an average of 45 minutes on brows with each client. “It’s better to come in ahead and get the shape you need and try the makeup ahead of time,” she says. Jennings’ brow care includes painstaking tweezer work to promote hair growth in desired areas and very little waxing work, which can overly thin brows. She builds and maintains distinct growth patterns, which stimulates hair growth where brow hair should be according to eye shape, spacing and depth. Over time, clients can expect fewer visits as brows preserve proper shape and growth rates. In tune with Taos women, Jennings likes a natural approach to beauty for herself. “A lot of women in Taos typically don’t wear makeup so that’s another consideration for brides here in this highdesert climate. I focus on building a skin care regime that brings out the natural beauty in my clients. If you are coming in and getting proper maintenance and skin care, then on the day of your wedding, 16

your skin is going to look amazing.” “A huge part of what I do with brows is help people look a lot younger, especially with men,” Jennings says. “Many men have bulky and unruly brows. The technique I use cleans up brows and it’s a great idea for entire wedding parties. Brow work on men can really open up the eye and make them appear younger.” With several salons and day spas for brides to choose from in Taos, Spirits of Beauty Salon and Day Spa, located at 223 Paseo Del Pueblo, works with many destination brides onsite and on location. “We offer nails, makeup and updos,” says salon receptionist Mary Coopersmith. “In advance, brides and their bridal parties can enjoy massages and facials.” Green Beauty salon owner Raynera Mrotek follows a natural philosophy when it comes to beauty. “We use all non-toxic and healthy products,” says Mrotek. “Basically the most valuable aspect is having a bride come in a few months ahead of her wedding day. I look for the proper shape and color as a hair designer and I provide a hairdo that will photograph well depending on her face and gown. It’s a very in-depth analyzation during the free pre-bridal consultation so I can make sure everything is artistically correct.” Green Beauty is located at 105 Paseo de Canon West.

The jacalita is a traditional wedding dance where everyone goes under a human arch to show support for the newlyweds.

Love is always in the Taos air By Teresa Dovalpage

T

aos’ reputation as a romantic destination is growing. In 2011 the city was named by Shape Magazine as one of the Top 12 “Best Honeymoon Destinations for Active Couples” in the world. “Taos also has what people call ‘good vibes,’” says Stella Mares McGinnis, who adds, “This is a profoundly spiritual place with a wealth of traditions that should be kept alive.”

Shall we dance?

Mares McGinnis is quite knowledgeable about traditions, particularly those related to nuptial ceremonies. She and her dancing partner, Tim Romero, have led La Gran Marcha Tradicional in countless weddings and anniversary ceremonies in Taos, Denver, Santa Fe and other cities. “La Gran Marcha is played at the beginning of the reception and is a dance full of symbolism,” she explains. “Tim and I lead the bride and groom, then all the guests join in. The initial 18

A TAOS WEDDING

v

movement means that the groom is presenting the bride to the community. Later we all do the jacalita, a kind of human arch, and everyone goes under it. We all come out holding hands and start dancing in circles as a way of showing support for the newlyweds.” Other popular wedding dances are La Varsoviana and the Dollar Dance. In the Dollar Dance, the women pin dollar bills onto the groom’s lapel and the men pin bills onto the bride’s dress or veil. “The money is frequently saved for the honeymoon,” Mares McGinnis says. Taos musicians Johnny Archuleta and Audrey Davis are often asked to play La Varsoviana in local weddings. This dance was originally a mazurka, popular in Polish and French ballrooms. It travelled with Emperor Maximilian to Mexico and from there to Northern New Mexico, where it became a favorite. It is also known as “Put Your Little Foot.”

Ceremonies of Love

Rev. Susan Varon’s Ceremony of Love wedding ministry has found its niche in the “destination weddings” market, catering to couples who come to Taos to get married. Varon is an ordained interfaith minister, artist and writer. “People may come for the highdesert beauty, the amazing light, or the indefinable ambiance surrounding ancient cultures,” said Varon. “They plan their weddings to take place by the banks of the Río Grande, outdoors or indoors at one of the myriad charming bed and breakfast inns — even, once, at the very center of the Gorge Bridge.” She has two sample ceremonies (one mentions God and the other does not) which are the starting point for most of the weddings she performs. Recently, a couple wanted her to include in their ceremony a reading from a beloved children’s book, “The Velveteen Rabbit,” recounting the transforming power of love, and how “it lasts for always.” “It was perfect,” says Varon. “People were wiping away tears!” She likes to bring a sense of blessing and of a new door opening to every one of her wedding ceremonies. “A wedding is a collaboration among the bride, the groom, the officiant, and the power of love in the universe,” she says. “Together, we all can create a ceremony of great heart and tenderness.”

20

A TAOS WEDDING

v

As for the exotic kind, this is an easy task for her. “My specialty is cooking food with an international flair,” says Todd. “I take ingredients from different cuisines and incorporate them into my menus.” A beautiful cake is the sweetest foundation for a wedding banquet. “They range from the very basic to the really elaborate ones,” says Todd, who attended the Cooking and Hospitality Institute in Chicago to become a pastry chef. “But personally, when I think of weddings and love, I think of chocolate. One favorite food d’amour we prepare here is a red chile-infused chocolate truffle.” Indeed, good food is a key element at any wedding reception. The owners of Hacienda del Sol, Luellen and Gerd Hertel, are aware of that and strive to offer a culinary experience to those who choose to exchange nuptial vows at their charming adobe inn. Gerd Hertel, who was the executive chef for Hyatt Regency Hotels and Ritz Carlton Hotels, and the corporate executive chef for Norwegian and Celebrity Cruise lines, is in charge of the menus. His dishes range from Southwest-inspired creations like crisp fried tortilla flautas with shrimp mousse and crab meat to fried camembert with apricot-currant sauce and Waldorf salad. “My cooking philosophy is to provide my friends and guests with food based on popular, classic recipes re-created to include regional, healthy foods, fresh and organic ingredients and ever-changing culinary trends,” said Hertel.

ig church weddings aren’t for everyone. Many pre-nuptial couples looking for the ultimate quality control may want to think about getting a judge to perform their ceremony. In Taos, a magistrate judge’s schedule is often as flexible as the couple’s and there are few rules. Former judge Erminio Martínez is known for performing ceremonies on horseback. “You wouldn’t believe all the situations I’ve done weddings,” Martínez said. “From a bus stop to horseback.” While she’s no longer on the bench full time, judge pro tem Betty Martínez still performs weddings with a ceremony she designed herself to reflect New Mexico traditions. “I’ve always gotten a lot of weddings. I redid the ceremony to where it’s not so cut and dry. My ceremony has a lot of romantic stuff in it,” she said. “To me, marriage is a very sacred and

very special thing.” In her 30-year career, Judge Martínez says she has performed weddings in tipis, at the top of Taos Ski Valley and even in hot air balloons. “Wherever they want me to go, I go,” Judge Betty said. “I always joke that I can sentence you to marriage for life, but I can’t get you out of it.” Sitting magistrate Judge Jeffrey Shannon described weddings as one of the best parts of his job. “They’ve all been fun. I’ve never had a bad wedding,” Shannon said. “It’s my favorite thing. How often does a magistrate judge get to give good news?” Shannon’s approach is joy in diversity. If a couple comes to his court wanting to wed, Shannon has a list of vows to choose from if the pair doesn’t have their own vows ready. The list includes traditional wedding vows, traditional Jewish vows, and more relaxed vows to reflect the couple’s values. “My thing is, it’s their marriage,” Shannon said. “I want to give them as many choices as possible and the degree of formality is up to the parties. I’ve only had one wedding so far with a bouquet and a white dress.” For more information on how to be married by a judge, call Taos Magistrate Court at (575) 758-4030.
