TaoS Municipal SchoolS 2014-2015 School Year

Welcome back Students, Parents and Staff to school year 2014-2015. As the newly appointed Director of Instruction and Federal Programs to Taos Municipal Schools I look forward in developing a strong partnership with all stakeholders in enhancing school programs that yield high achievement for our students. The Taos Municipal School District has dedicated, highly qualified staff willing to work with your child and provide them with the best education possible. Your child’s academic progress and well-being is important to us. We will continue to deepen our content knowledge, enhance and improve educational programs and implementation practices in order to best serve our community’s future. It is evident that our community has bright, enthusiastic children as they compete and place in regional, state and national extra-curricular activities. Supporting them are parents, teachers and sponsors who dedicate many hours ensuring they are prepared in and out of the classroom. As part of the leadership team I want to continue to provide support to make our students globally competitive. Thank you parents and staff for all you do! Melissa Sandoval Director of Instruction/ Federal Programs

I, in turn, invite parents to visit and volunteer at your child’s school regardless of grade level. Become familiar with teacher(s) expectations and support your child in homework as studying daily is the best way to learn and retain new material. We ask parents to ensure your child comes to school regularly, completes work when assigned, and is well mannered and behaved throughout the school day. Your child’s gain of knowledge and demonstration of mastery in classroom and standardized assessments reflects our efforts as a school and district. These are only snapshots of a child’s progress however, can be utilized to help us to make informed decisions in modifying our programs, implementing remedial programs, and adjusting our instructional practices if necessary. Please continue to support your child in their academic efforts and help us help them demonstrate success. I look forward to meeting and working with you all this year. Have a great, safe, and productive year. If I can be of assistance, please feel free to contact me.

Respectfully, Melissa Sandoval Director of Instruction/Federal Programs

TaoS Municipal SchoolS 2014-2015 School Year

Melissa sandoval Director of Instruction/ Federal Programs

Respetuosamente,

Melissa Sandoval Directora de programas de instrucción/Federal

uanito Olonia’s weak immune system and low muscle tone prevent him from attending school every day, but he still got to be an active member of his first-grade class at Enos García Elementary School this past school year.

Since preschool, Olonia, who just finished first grade, has participated in class lessons via Skype, a video chat program. He keeps all of his materials, such as workbooks and beginning reader books, at home and reads and works along with the other students in the class. On May 22, Olonia and the three other students in Maureen Eirich’s first-grade special education class read a picture book called “Baby Pictures.” A laptop sits on the table where the other students are working so Olonia can see everyone and they can see him. Olonia reads faster than the other students, and when he announces he’s finished reading the book, Eirich asks him to be patient and wait for the others to catch up. Olonia’s mother, Jeanette Olonia, is home with her son and stays close by to make sure she can hand him materials as he needs them and troubleshoot any technical problems that might come up. But she is careful not to get

involved in the lessons so as to replicate the classroom experience as authentically as possible. In an interview with The Taos News, Jeanette Olonia said not helping her son with his lessons can be a challenge. She said Eirich, who was also his teacher in preschool, was instrumental in getting Juanito Olonia set up on Skype so he could participate in class remotely. “I wish more teachers were like her,” Jeanette Olonia said. Jeanette Olonia said that during the winter, her son is so susceptible to colds that even bringing him to the grocery store is risky. Even though he can do his work from home, she said when he gets sick, he gets sick for months at a time and he doesn’t have much energy, so at times he works at a slower pace.

Eirich presented Juanito Olonia with an iPad, a printer with a fax machine and an iPad cover. The Taos Community Foundation’s Kids in Need Fund financed the materials, so Juanito Olonia could have his own iPad to work on during the summer. Before, he used one the school provided. When he was presented the gifts, Juanito Olonia’s face lit up with a smile and he shouted an enthusiastic “Thank you.” Jeanette Olonia said she’s looking forward to being able to fax homework and school materials back and forth with Juanito’s teachers. She said she makes frequent trips to school or Eirch comes to her house to pick up homework and drop off work books.

Obstacles notwithstanding, Jeanette Olonia said her son loves technology and has a knack for reading and writing. When the weather is warm, Juanito Olonia is able to go outside to play ball with his dad, go fishing and go to the park.

Mary Hobratschk, the parent liaison with the district’s special education department, said iPads are a great educational tool for students with special needs. She said it helps students who otherwise wouldn’t be able to participate in classroom lessons take responsibility for their learning and, with the various educational apps they can use, allows them to work at their own pace.

On May 22, the last day of school for Eirich’s class,

“This technology is extraordinarily powerful,” she said

These funds are targeted to high poverty schools and are used to provide supplementary educational services to students who are educationally disadvantaged or at risk of failing to meet the state standards. Schools have the option to follow a school wide or targeted model.

TITLE I – Part D: Neglected and Delinquent

This program provides funds to support partnerships between schools and correctional facilities for the purpose of educating students residing in or returning from correctional facilities. The Taos Municipal Schools works closely with Taos County and the Taos Juvenile Detention Center. A teacher is employed to work with district students who are incarcerated. TMS also provides funds for the Dream Team Project in order to support students.

TITLE II – Part A: Preparing, Training and Recruiting High Quality Teachers and Principals

The main goal is to provide funds to increase student and academic achievement by improving teacher quality and getting more highly qualified teachers and principals into schools. In alignment with Section 1119(a)(3), the Taos Municipal School District strives to ensure that all teachers teaching in the core content areas within the school district are highly qualified.

TITLE III - Part A: English Language Acquisition, Language Enhancement, and Academic Achievement

Under Civil Right Law and the No Child Left Behind Act, school districts that receive Federal financial assistance have an obligation to identify and serve all ELL/LEP students. The purpose of Title III is to develop educational programs that will help ensure that Limited English Proficient (LEP)/English Language Learners (ELLs), statute uses (LEP), attain English proficiency, succeed at core academic subjects, and meet the same state academic content and student achievement standards expected of all children.

TITLE III - Language Instruction for Immigrant Students

The purpose of this program is to develop educational programs that will help ensure that immigrant students attain English proficiency, succeed at core academic subjects, and meet the same state academic content and student achievement standards expected of all children.

STATE BILINGUAL PROGRAM

The Taos Municipal Schools receives state funding under the Bilingual Multicultural Education Act of 2004 (NMSA 22-23-1 through 22-23-6) to provide for the education of our linguistically and culturally different students and for schools utilizing two languages as the medium of instruction for any part or all of the curriculum for the grade specified in the application for funding submitted to the NM PED.

TITLE VI - Rural and Low-Income School Program

This program targets rural school districts that serve high number of poor students. Funding from the Rural Low-Income Schools Grant may be used for a wide variety of activities authorized under various Title Programs of the No Child Left Behind Act. RLIS funding may only be used to supplement and not supplant other federal, state, and local funds. The funding at each school site aligns with activities appropriate for moving the school toward the district’s goals for increasing student achievement.

TITLE VII - Indian, Native Hawaiian and Alaska Native Education

The purpose of this program is to support the efforts of school districts in serving Native American students, so that they can meet the same challenging state student academic achievement standards that all other students are expected to meet.

TITLE VIII – Impact Aid

The purpose of Impact Aid is to provide formula grants to school districts burdened by the presence of nontaxable federal land and installations to make up for lost revenues and additional costs associated with federal presence. School districts are also responsible for educating children of federal personnel who live and/or work on these properties.

KINDERGARTEN THROUGH THIRD GRADE PLUS PROGRAM

The summer K-3+ Program is a six year pilot project that extends the school year for kindergarten through third grade by up to two months in the summer for participating students and measures the effect of additional time on literacy, numeracy and social skills development. The purpose of K-3+ Program is to demonstrate that increased time in kindergarten and the early grades narrows the achievement gap between disadvantaged students and other students, and increases cognitive skills and leads to higher test scores for all participants. The K-3+ provides funding extended school days to students from Ranchos Elementary and Enos Garcia Elementary for twenty-five instructional days.

NEw MExIcO READS TO LEAD

New Mexico’s early reading initiative, New Mexico Reads to Lead!, will provide the following expectations and supports as we prepare our children to become leaders in literacy: 1. Increase quality of reading instruction 2. Provide a screening assessment for use in planning data-driven instruction 3. Provide quality professional development for administrators, reading coaches, and teachers 4.Ensure that districts/charter schools have a comprehensive plan for addressing literacy instruction 5. Reach out to parents and families with free resources in English and Spanish to support children’s reading at home

NEw MExIcO REAL RESULTS

The Results Plan, with all its resources, was implemented to improve outcomes for students with disabilities. NM Real Results will be looking at academic performance and student growth rates for students with disabilities as indicators of success.

ome new kids arrived at Chrysalis Alternative School last week.

About 15 goats are now housed in a barn built on the field behind the school. Not Forgotten Outreach, a program that uses agriculture to help veterans suffering from PTSD, and volunteers from Southern Methodist UniversityTaos helped the students at Chrysalis construct fencing for their goat barn. Construction began at the beginning of the school year and was completed in January. Orion Cervio, a teacher at Chrysalis, has been involved in this project since the beginning. He said he hopes the students will soon operate a creamery at their school, producing milk and cheese from their goats. He also said he’d like to eventually teach the students to slaughter and butcher the animals. “A lot of great people have shown up to help with this,”

he said. Cervio said the project was inspired by Miguel Santistevan’s agricultural programs throughout the district. Santistevan has worked with students to plant and harvest crops on multiple fields around Taos, and now has an aquaponics system at Chrysalis, where the students are learning to harvest fish for food.

students as the dominant female, had hoses attached to her horns to soften the blow to the other goats when she inevitably charges at them.

“Miguel’s arrival (to the school) was the beginning of a new direction for us,” Cervio said.

When teacher Paula Martinez laid down grain for the goats, the dominant female shoved the others aside to hog her own pile. Meanwhile, a small, spotted Nubian goat remained close to the students, preferring to let the students pet and fawn over him than interact with the other goats.

On Monday (Jan. 13) Cervio led his class out onto the field to get acquainted with the goats.

“We’ll learn a lot about human behavior from the goats,” Cervio told his students.

Cervio said they brought in all different breeds of goats to encourage genetic diversity among the herd.

Student Miranda Romero said she learned to use various tools for the first time while constructing the fences. She contended the girls among the group were more focused during construction than the boys.

One of the bucks, Spartacus, was in heat and was therefore extremely hyperactive and producing a strong odor. One of the females, who Cervio described to the

“The boys gave up, so I built it,” she said.

QUESTA

Trujillo new Questa school chief

Q

uesta High School Principal Valerie Trujillo will assume the role of superintendent for the Questa school district at the end of the month.

Current superintendent Lillian Torrez took over as superintendent of the Taos school district July 1. Trujillo received the New Mexico High School Principal of the Year Award this past school year from the National Association of Secondary School Principals. In September, Trujillo will travel to Washington for the 2014 NASSP conference, and has a shot at winning National high school principal of the year.

By Elizabeth Cleary

In an interview with The Taos News, Trujillo said that during her term she wants to focus on increasing student achievement in Questa. She said the district can do this by zeroing in on math and reading skills and encouraging parent involvement. She said recent news Chevron is closing its Questa Mine could cause the district to lose students as children have to relocate with parents who must now seek work elsewhere. Chevron, she said, has contributed a lot to the district in terms of funding and gifts. Trujillo said she and other school officials are discussing how to offset the potential losses to the district in light of the mine closing.

Trujillo says she plans to continue with the district’s Destino 20/20 Plan — a seven-year strategic plan to ensure every student in Questa is college or career-ready. Faculty are focusing on improving test scores, attendance and graduation rates as part of this plan, Trujillo said. Finally, Trujillo said she plans to work with faculty to ensure a safe and positive environment throughout the Questa school district. As part of her efforts to create that environment, she said she may hire a school resource officer, a police officer responsible for maintaining safety and security at the schools, for the Questa district.

“Faculty are focusing on improving test scores, attendance and graduation rates as part of this plan.” —Valerie Trujillo

Middle school students in Peter Walker’s Introduction to Film class incorporate special effects as they go through their video footage. The new TV production studio, which includes a green screen, is located in the STEM building and gives students an opportunity to learn from professionals such as Walker.

New building adds to

unique education at Taos Academy BY Elliott Martin

Q

uestions come up when explaining a charter school formed around taking online classes. Karin Moulton, the 21st Century learning coordinator and an instrumental figure in the creation of Taos Academy, is quick to dispel the misconceptions.

With a tour around the institution’s campus and a look inside the school’s new science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) building, the scene is not of kids glued to computer screens as their social skills slip away, but rather a dynamic environment ushering in an educational revolution. “Each kid has their own individualized learning plan,” Moulton explained. Individualized education is something the school is able to achieve by having students do their core curriculum online. Moulton, one of the school’s founders, said the computer is a tool to do core classes but is not an end-all. Enrichment classes are an important part of the system. During these classes, students get face-to-face time with teachers as well as their peers. By efficiently taking care of standard educational requirements, students open up time to pursue other, less typical, opportunities. For example, Trempealeau Morninglight, 12, an athlete in the Taos Winter Sports Team’s Free Ride program, said he switched to Taos Academy so he could ski more. Regardless their interests, the school wants students to explore different options and that is where the new building

28 Back to School 2014/15 | taosnews.com/bts

and STEM Institute classes come into the picture. “It’s all about inspiring kids,” said Moulton. “We want every kid who leaves here to have some sort of a plan.” To accomplish this goal, a wide variety of STEM Institute classes are offered throughout the school year. These classes, designed to incorporate STEM concepts through a project-based curriculum, blur the lines between science, engineering and math, with the arts. Taos Academy brings in professionals from the community to teach the different courses. As well as developing marketable skills through the program, high school students can earn university credits through institutions such as the University of New Mexico. In the new “Smart Lab,” students have access to computer-aided design programs, like SketchUp, flight simulators or other technological tools to work on projects such as learning about renewable energy. Apart from more typical STEM type electives, students have access to classes such as film production taught by Peter Walker, culinary arts and a recycled fashion workshop, where students must use second-hand materials. Local musician Jimmy Stadler has been teaching students how to play instruments of their choice or how to play in a band, regardless of ability, for the past three years as part of the program. “I find it very challenging but rewarding. We have a lot of fun,” he said. “It keeps me up on new songs as well.” In total, he said he spends about seven hours a week contributing to the program, which includes both class time and the time needed to prepare for it. “When it all comes

together, it’s magical,” he said. “I get goose bumps. That’s the most rewarding part.” To best utilize this unique opportunity, Taos Academy opens up the afternoon STEM classes to all Taos county students. “It’s important for us to be a community school,” explained Moulton. “We’re all in it together. Why don’t we work together and pool our resources?” The school, which is under a state charter, was rechartered this year for another five years. As part of the new charter, the school is allowed to have up to 250 students, but Moulton said the plan is to keep it around 210. Taos Academy, which had 180 students at the end of the 2013-2014 academic year, would not have been able to accommodate more students without the new space. The school consists of a middle school and high school, educating students in grades 5 to 12. For the incoming grades, specifically the fifth and sixth grades, the students learn in an environment where they can adjust to the new style of curriculum. Consequently, the academy offers middle school STEM Institute classes. Eventually, the distinction between grades begins to vanish, as students learn at their own pace. While Taos Academy’s different style of eduction is not the perfect fit for everyone, the school has demonstrated a high level of success by receiving an A on its report card from the New Mexico Public Eduction Department. “I’m blown away with the results,” said Moulton, reflecting on all the school’s achievements over its first five years of operation.

BUDGET

Taos district

looks to shore up lunch program

BY ELIZABETH CLEARY

P

lans are under way to revamp the high school cafeteria and make it more appealing to students. Stabilizing the student nutrition program, which ended last year nearly $400,000 in the hole, is at the top of Taos Municipal School District superintendent Lillian Tórrez’ list to save money for the upcoming school year.

The state Public Education Department told the district last month it had to place $1 million of its $20 million budget in reserve funds. The budget the district submitted to PED had just $163,000 in reserves. Due to PED’s directive, Tórrez and the finance department are forced to make some heavy-handed cuts to the operating budget. Because making changes to the lunch program wouldn’t affect instruction to students, Tórrez developed a multi-point plan designed to ensure

30 Back to School 2014/15 | taosnews.com/bts

the lunch program’s solvency for next year. The board on July 10 approved spending $130,000, taken from funds allocated from the state, on new furniture for the high school cafeteria. School lunches have become unpopular at the high school in recent years, student nutrition director MaryAnn McCann has said. As it stands now, seniors can go off campus for lunch if they have permission from their parents, and Tórrez says they will still be allowed to do so, but they will no longer be allowed to bring food back to share with others. Other plans include sprucing up the outdoor eating areas, opening up more lines so students don’t have to wait as long and playing music in the cafeteria that the students enjoy. Tórrez said at the July 10 meeting the cafeteria needs a facelift. “I wouldn’t want to go in there as a student,” she said.

Tórrez said the district is also working with the PED to lower the cost of lunch, which is currently $2.50. She said McCann is also applying for the Community Eligibility Provision, a federal program that would provide funding for free lunch to all students in the district. The program is meant for communities that serve largely low-income areas and is an alternative to collecting paper applications from each student to determine a district’s eligibility for federal funding for free lunches. The district must demonstrate that a certain portion of its students are low-income to receive funding for free lunch, and must collect applications from students in order to do that. In the past, the district has had trouble getting students to return their applications and last school year the district did not qualify for across-the-board free lunch at the high school as a result. Tórrez said she plans to meet with McCann on a monthly basis and closely monitor the lunch program’s financials to prevent such a steep loss next school year.

SCIENCE

Taos scientists remove

antibiotics from water with crab shells BY Elliott Martin

I

t all started with an “Ah-ha” moment. Then after more than a year of hard work, a team of Taos ninth-graders became one of the winners of the Army’s National eCymbermission competition in June.

The challenge, sponsored by the U.S. Army and the Army Educational Outreach Program, encourages students in grades six to nine to explore science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) while competing on the state, regional and national level. The Taos team also won a $5,000 STEM-in-action grant. In the competition, students must present a solution to a real-world problem in their community, which is exactly what Andrea Chin-Lopez, Julia Johnson, Anthony Archuleta and James Valerio, did. Science teacher Laura Tenorio, the team’s mentor, traveled with them to Washington, D.C. The students, who just completed the ninth grade, have been working on filtering antibiotics from drinking water using chitosan, a substance made from crab shells. Their project, called Crabyotics, is a possible low-cost solution addressing the issue. The team highlighted two main reasons why antibiotics in drinking water supplies is troublesome. One issue is bacteria become resistant to antibiotics when they are overused, making them less effective. When they are introduced into water ways, they also affect wildlife, such as fish populations, cultivating strains

38 Back to School 2014/15 | taosnews.com/bts

of antibiotic resistant bacteria in natural habitats. In the case of team member Valerio, there is another motivation to the project. Valerio is severely allergic to penicillin and other common antibiotics derived from it, such as amoxicillin and ampicillin. For him, having domestic water supplies contaminated with these substances, could be a matter of life and death. The motivation of the project was clear, especially after mentor and previous science teacher Ernie López said removing antibiotics from water was the holy grail of science fair projects. It was Archuleta who ran with the idea, connecting the dots between the problem and using chitosan as a solution. A lot of research has been done on chitosan, and there are several commercial applications, but no one was talking about using it to filter out antibiotics. Archuleta realized it could filter out substances of a certain size. He also realized antibiotics were that size. Ah-ha. Chitosan is made from chitin through a chemical process called deacetylation. A common source of chitin, is snow crab shells, making the project even more exciting because the team is using a waste product that is readily available for their filter. Fortunately, the deacetylation process also removes crustacean allergens making it safe for everyone. Chin-Lopez explained how the team tested the

idea. After making their own chitosan, as they were not satisfied with what was commercially available after initial testing, they filtered water containing antibiotics through the chitosan. They then placed the filtered water onto petri plates. Once they incubated the plates, they counted the number of bacterial colonies growing on the plates. After comparing their control plate, one with unfiltered water, to the ones on which they put the filtered water, the team determined they were able to remove 60 to 68 percent of the antibiotics. The project started out as Archuleta’s science fair project, but as the idea blossomed, it became a group endeavor. While the team is preparing for the competition in D.C., they already have the next steps of the project lined out for when they return. They want to quantify the amount of antibiotic contamination in local water sources. This includes investigating the waste water treatment plant here in Taos. They want to see how much antibiotic contamination is in the water before and after it goes through the plant’s sand filter. Apart from fundraising and talking with groups such as Taos Soil and Water Conservation, they want improve on their idea. This includes being able to filter more water at a faster rate as well as do further testing to endure the deacetylation process does indeed remove all crustacean allergens.

t has been an exciting year for Taos Academy. The school received an “A” grade from New Mexico Public Education Department and our charter has been renewed for another five years. We added a new STEM building to house our exciting elective programs. A new field and basketball court is being installed this summer as well as a solar array, walking track and additional playground equipment. Taos Academy is a free, public school for grades 5-12. All students have an individualized learning program aligned to their personal goals to ensure success. Our mission focuses on 21st Century skills — communication, collaboration, creativity, accountability, technology, problem solving, global awareness and civic responsibility. Students receive academic curriculum digitally, giving them the flexibility to work at their own pace anywhere there is internet service. Online curriculum is balanced by face-to-face classes taught by a highly qualified staff who are passionate about education. Our live programs include: Fifth/Sixth Grade Enrichment offers academic support, small class sizes, field trips and projectbased work four days a week. Certified teachers provide tutoring and guest presenters give workshops on topics such as bridge building, nutrition, and anti-bullying. 21stCentury classes are required at Taos Academy. Leadership class students develop and implement service learning projects in the community. In Global Studies class students learn

about diverse cultures and global issues to gain understanding and respect for other nations and their values. SMART LAB is a state-of-the-art technology lab where students explore robotics, animation, engineering, flight simulation, music production and alternative energy. Housed in the new STEM building and funded by a grant from Century Link, our digital media arts lab will be used for both the SMART Lab class and STEM Institute classes. Students will produce news programs, documentaries and films throughout the year. STEM Institute (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) provides elective classes taught by professionals in the community four days a week. Most high school classes are dual credit classes. Courses include: Music application with Jimmy Stadler, Video Production with Peter Walker, dance with Olga Baigas, drama and singing with Cindy Valerio, mixed media art with Katie Woodall, outdoor education with Field Institute of Taos and culinary arts with Sit Khamramsan. Last year some new courses were offered and will continue this year — green technologies, media literacy, video game design, photography, journalism, fashion design, health and nutrition. College Link is for students in grades 10-12 who enroll in both Taos Academy and university classes. Dual credit is earned, making it possible for a student to graduate from high school with an associate degree. Highly qualified advisors and counselors guide students in their coursework, application processes, scholarship applications, and graduation

requirements. Career Pathways is another program for students in grades 10-12. Students take career-specific courses and enroll in an internship program to receive on-the-job training toward certification in their chosen field of study. Highly qualified advisors and counselors guide students in their coursework, application processes, scholarship applications and graduation requirements. GROW (Growing Renewable Options For the World) is Taos Academy’s agriculture program funded in part by grants from Taos Community Foundation, Farm to Table, and Subaru Healthy Sprouts. Classes teach adaptive approaches to sustainable food production and nutrition utilizing our solar-powered growing dome, local farms and partners. Students also work collaboratively with Taos Heritage Farm, located adjacent to our school’s campus. One third of the produce is given to local food banks, one third is shared with other programs and one third is used in our culinary arts program. Outdoor Education offers wilderness experiences for all Taos Academy students. Overnight camping, day expeditions, winter activities and team building experiences are required throughout the school year. Our dedicated staff welcomes students and parents to a new school year. Come by for a visit at 110 Paseo del Cañon West and see for yourself what we’re doing. — Karin Moulton, Taos Academy

The school that Taos built

T

he Taos Waldorf School is a uniquely Taoseño institution. Reflecting the fierce independence and frontier spirit of Taos, our school has overcome many challenges — to survive and to flourish. Over the past several years, we have experienced a genuine rebirth, finding new life through outstanding teachers, a strong and active parent body, and students — ages 3 to 12 — blossoming through our heart-centered curriculum. Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire While there are Waldorf schools all around the world, there is nothing quite like our school. Our cultural surroundings, our people, and the intensity of this place have all shaped who we are and what our school can offer. We have a tremendous teacherstudent ratio, with ideally small class sizes. This allows us to work with children as individuals, helping each child reach their highest potential. We have land bordering Taos Pueblo, giving children a direct connection to this powerful landscape, with buffalo and wild horses roaming at the edges of our campus, and Pueblo Peak soaring over us all. Through the exceptionally courageous people we attract, we offer something that no other school in Taos can: the opportunity to be part of something unique, to be part of a pioneering collective, to stand together as our children bloom. We know it takes a village to raise a child and this school — the Taos Waldorf School — is the school that our village has built. The Waldorf philosophy focuses on creative thought, on nurturing children free from standardized tests and cookie-cutter approaches. We tell stories, we observe the daily rhythms of nature, we connect with the land, we honor the needs and changes

in our children and we believe that art underpins everything we learn. Access to All Tuition Exchange Program As in Waldorf schools around the world, our ATA tuition exchange program ensures that cost does not keep committed families from joining our community. This is our way of giving back to Taos and ensuring that all may access the alternative, high-quality education they desire. Our ATA program sees our parents gathering as a vibrant body to help in our garden, attend to our classrooms, stage events and festivals, and strengthen the school’s operations so that the school receives the support it requires in order to function to the fullest of its abilities. Through our ATA program, everyone — parents, children, and the school itself — receives what they need. Our Agricultural Program We have eleven acres of outstanding agricultural land at the foot of Pueblo Peak. Over the winter months, our board of trustees designed a program of student-supported agriculture designed to cultivate in our students a holistic knowledge of the interconnectedness of all things. This program features: an edible market garden that TWS students, parents, and faculty have planted and tended and will soon harvest, eat and sell.

grade-specific curricula that emphasizes and explores key principles of gardening and ecology.

the tending of culturally significant foods (corn, beans, squash, etc) to celebrate local culture and history.

Our Teachers This year, we have a new wave of superb teachers. In Waldorf education, teachers remain with their classes from first to eighth grade — a

process our own Silke Famous Markowski has just now Waldorf Alumni embarked upon with the William Alexander first graders. We welcome (novelist) Claudia Pfiffner as the new Jennifer Aniston early childhood director (actress) and Llora Kressman as our pre-school teacher — Kenneth Chenault both with masters degrees (CEO of American in Waldorf Education, Express) and both with extensive John McCrea experience in early(musician from the childhood education from band Cake) around the continent. We Anna Paquin are so very lucky to have (actress) them. We also welcome Ferdinand Alexander the incredible energy Porsche (designed and dynamism of our the Porsche 911) administrator, Jenn Foley, as the new third-grade Thomas Sudhof teacher. Taking her place (Neuroscientist and as administrator is Colleen Nobel Prize Winner) Shendp, with Rachael Robin van Persie Penn our new strings and (Dutch soccer player orchestra teacher, and for Manchester Tammy Thomas our new United) office manager. Along with Uma Thurman returning teachers Beth (actress) Krieger-Fritsch and Gaia Pinsonnault, our TWS team holds incredible strength, wisdom and grace. Through this little school we are shaping children who will one day actively work to better our world. As all of us have such essential gifts to share, our unique approach to education gives us powerful tools to discover and nourish this beauty within. — Sandy Campbell, development coordinator at Taos Waldorf School

Bridges

Helping to make

higher education a reality

B

ridges works with people from all walks of life as they navigate the college admissions and financial aid application process.

One of our goals is to assist people who are from the first generation in their families to access higher education, and we often collaborate with high school counselors to identify those students.

Pacific Northwest. She was also interested in New Mexico and Colorado state schools, and had an open mind about both community colleges and four-year schools. Throughout her senior year we talked about ACT testing, how to send high school transcripts to colleges, and scholarships. We submitted her FAFSA so that she could receive the financial aid she qualified for.

Working through the challenges A student who came to Bridges was in the top 25 percent of her graduating class, lived with a close relative, was very concerned about being able to pay for college and knew she didn’t want to go too far from Taos. Her counselor saw tremendous potential in her. We met monthly and often twice a month, during the second semester of her senior year and through the summer after she graduated, to assure that her status as an independent student, not being supported by a parent, was established.

She returned to Bridges to file for financial aid and we talked about six different schools in New Mexico and Colorado that could be the right fit for her. At this point she approached the idea of college with some wonderful experience and a great deal of enthusiasm.

She completed the first semester of her freshman year at an in-state school, but found it challenging in a lot of ways and transferred to UNM-Taos for the second semester. She stayed at UNM-Taos for a second year while being employed, and then she gave birth to beautiful baby girl. She returned to Bridges when her daughter was 10 months old to apply for financial aid for the upcoming school year and to discuss a course of studies that would align with her career goals.

Completing the checklist We recently had the opportunity to get together with a single mother who is going to school full-time while holding down a demanding full-time job. She came to Bridges for help in navigating the process of transferring from UNMTaos to main campus. This student is incredibly resourceful and pretty much had her road mapped out, but we worked together to confirm that steps were not missing and that this was the clearest path to attain her goals.

Knowing all the options Because we had worked closely with her older sister, another one of our clients first approached Bridges in her junior year of high school, she had a sense of what she might want to study in college and knew that she liked the

Working through the maze A student whom we had met with since the spring of his junior year was motivated to apply to highly selective schools throughout the country. We met regularly and supported him as he learned about colleges and finalized

his list of prospective schools, wrote essays, filled out the Common Application, applied for competitive, involved scholarships, submitted his financial aid paperwork, reviewed financial aid award letters and weighed the pros and cons of each school. Even though this student’s parents both went to college, they were overwhelmed with trying to help him through this ever-changing maze. He has enrolled at a liberal arts school that is a great fit for him academically and socially, and he is doing so with numerous prestigious scholarships. Mix and match any of the circumstances of the above students, and this is the infinite matrix of reasons people come to Bridges. Our job is to walk with students and families through this layered process, to help students determine what path might best suit their needs, current lifestyle and future goals, and help them get there in the most direct way. While we offer a slate of workshops and presentations throughout the year, the heart of what we do is individualized college counseling. Students call our office to set up appointments, which generally last one half to a full hour. During an initial visit we talk about people’s background and hopes, answer questions and provide general information. Depending on need, we can then create game plans and continue working together until all goals have been reached. Our services are free and open to people of all ages. Bridges is located at 112A Alexander Street. You can reach us at 758-5074 or info@bridgesproject.org. — Joleen Montoya and Sue Goldberg, co-directors of Bridges Project for Education.

Getting back to school, a great time for accomplishment By Bill Knief

T

hese days there is a discussion going on as to just how valuable a diploma, degree or certificate is in the real world. Once you graduate, will there be a job waiting for you? Can you afford the cost of higher education? Do you really have time to devote to furthering your education after the demands of work, family and other life responsibilities have been addressed? Are you really cut out for higher education, or is that for others — not you? A few years ago UNM-Taos Executive Director Dr. Kate O’Neill proposed an answer to all those questions in one simple sentence: “Education is the great equalizer.” I think what she meant is that education can create a level playing field regardless of one’s income, lack of opportunities, geographic location, ethnicity, gender or station in life. Educated individuals are in charge of their own destiny. They have choices, whether those choices involve carefully thought-out career decisions,

the pursuit of a particular lifestyle, tackling the tough challenges of the STEHM fields — science, technology, engineering, healthcare and math — or simply the desire someday to be able to support aging parents, raise a family or pursue an interest or hobby for personal enrichment. Starting with that high school or GED diploma, education can put you into a higher income bracket. But equally important, it says to all the world that you completed what you set out to do, whether that’s obtaining your PhD degree in science or your CDL license to operate heavy equipment. And that pride and sense of accomplishment can never be taken away from you. Diplomas, college degrees, certificates and licensures are the tools society uses to open the doors to a larger world. They take sacrifice, patience and determination to achieve, but they are within the reach of anyone and they can last a lifetime. In contrast, giving up on education at any time in your life is, in a sense, giving up on yourself. As the only institution of higher education within a

50-mile radius, UNM-Taos is dedicated to providing quality, affordable education to all who seek it, and now over 3,000 students a year respond to that invitation. The result is that last February your community college was named the 17th fastest growing community college of its size in the nation, out of a cohort of over 350 institutions. This remarkable accomplishment could not have been achieved without the excellent faculty, staff and growing facilities of UNM-Taos. But it is the citizens of Northern New Mexico — the students, families, neighbors and supporters of higher education — that deserve the real credit. They are the ones setting high standards for themselves and for higher education in the rural, remote, disadvantaged area we call home. Perhaps this is the year that you, too, will be heading back to school in the fall. The UNMTaos semester starts Aug. 18 and we hope to see you then. But regardless of where you go or what institution you attend, know that the path of education you are traveling on is the adventure of a lifetime. Work at it. Enjoy it. And have a great year.

“Education is the great equalizer.” —Dr. Kate O’Neill 46 Back to School 2014/15 | taosnews.com/bts

Mother’s Day

All students eating school lunches are encouraged to Build Your Tray The Healthy Way by taking at least 3 of the food items offered on the lunch menu. Remember that one of these items must be a fruit or vegetable. Taos School lunches provide the 5 meal components of a lunch (bread, milk, protein, fruit and vegetable) daily. Students must take 3 components to count for a meal. Encourage your student to take all 5 components since the cost is the same whether they eat all 5 items or only 3! USDA regulations require that a fruit or vegetable be on every tray. This requirement is based on the USDA Choose My Plate nutrition education promotion that includes 1/2 a plate contain fruits & vegetables, 1/4 whole grain and 1/4 protein, & low fat dairy to be considered healthy. TMS Student Nutrition encourages students to start with a fruit or vegetable... better yet take both! Next, choose a whole grain item, pick a lean protein and top your meal off with a carton of milk to equal one great tray for the best school day!

THS head coach Robert Valencia, right, lifts Diego Valerio in the air after the eighth-grader won the 106-pound state championship last February.

Who’ll step up

this year?

L

ast school year Taos High School won six state championships. In the fall, Taos High’s boys and girls cross-country teams finished first. In the winter, the Ice Tigers and THS’ co-ed spirit team rose to the top. Then in the spring, Taos’ girls track team defended its state title while its boys track team also ran away from the competition. Success wasn’t limited to those sports either. Taos High also won district titles in football, girls soccer, boys basketball, wrestling and baseball.

In Questa, the Wildcats made it to the state championship baseball game while its volleyball and spirit teams stayed strong. Peñasco also crowned some all-state runners and returned to the state boys basketball tournament. Some teams will return a lot athletes that helped them excel last year while other teams lost a majority of their lineups. The question this year, however, is who will step up next? Will athletes who excelled last year rise to the top again? Will other athletes make a smooth transition from

junior varsity to varsity and lead their teams? Will teams that were on the brink of a championship last year reach the pinnacle this year? Can other teams band together again and defend their titles? Last year’s success means the talent to excel is here, but it certainly doesn’t guarantee success this year. Athletes will have to prove themselves game after game and race after race, especially in the state tournament when the stakes are the highest, and the winners go down in history as champions.

Sipapu rewards students with free lift tickets

L

ocated 20 miles southeast of Taos, Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort will offer an attractive incentive to Taos-area students this school year: make good grades, ski for free.

Available for New Mexico students in kindergarten through 12th grade, the program rewards students who receive at least a 3.5 grade point average during the 2014 fall semester to receive a free season pass beginning January 2015. “We’re passionate about this mountain, and we’re also passionate about education — be it on the slopes or in the classroom,” said Sue Leslie, Sipapu’s snow sports school director. “It’s a privilege for us to reward those kids who work hard with a free season pass.” All students in fourth or fifth grade, regardless of their report card, will ski free everyday this winter, Leslie added.

New Mexico’s oldest ski area will also offer significantly discounted half day and full day ski school programs for area elementary, junior high and high school classes. These field trips — available mornings, afternoons or for a full day — give teachers another tool to motivate their students. “These kids look forward to our field trips and consider them a privilege,” Leslie said. “Most schools require the students to meet behavior guidelines and maintain at least a C average to participate, which means students work hard to make sure they can be there.” Sipapu snowboard instructor and Mora resident, Carlos Maestas, was first introduced to snowboarding nearly 25 years ago as a young student in Sipapu’s school program. He fell in love with the sport and did everything he could to make sure he made these “ultimate” field trips.

Home school students are eligible and welcome to participate in both the GPA program and the field trips. Sipapu also partners with area colleges and universities to offer discounted ski or snowboard courses for college credit. To participate in Sipapu’s school or college programs or to sign up for a class field trip, please contact ski school director Sue Leslie at skisue@ SipapuNM.com. Sipapu enters the 2014-2015 ski season as New Mexico’s fastest growing resort, yet visitors won’t wait in line for a lift. For more information about Sipapu, visit SipapuNM.com or call 5872240.

Community Elibigility – A New Provision To Serve Children The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 provides an alternative to household applications in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. The intent of the Community Eligibility Program (CEP) is to improve access to free school meals in eligible high poverty school districts and schools and to eliminate the administrative burden of collecting household applications. Enos Garcia Elementary School, Ranchos Elementary, Arroyos del Norte Elementary Taos Middle School, Chrysalis Alternative High School and Cyber Magnet School are participating in a Universal Breakfast and Lunch Program for the current 2014-2015 school year. If your children attend any of the schools listed, breakfast/lunch will be available to them at no charge. All students enrolled at this school may participate in the breakfast/lunch program at no charge to them. Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) will require school districts and schools to serve National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP) breakfasts and lunches to all participating children at no charge. Studies have shown that children who are not hungry perform better in school. By providing breakfast/lunch to all children at no charge, we are hoping to create a better learning environment for our students. The school breakfast and lunch served follows U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines for healthy school meals. The Universal Meals Program cannot succeed without your support; please encourage your children to participate in school meal programs. All meals will be served to all students at no charge regardless of the eligibility status.

Student Nutrition Advisory Councils Are you interested in educating students about the importance of good nutrition and promoting your school foodservice program? If so, starting a Student Nutrition Advisory Council (SNAC) in your school is the way to go. Organizing a Student Nutrition Advisory Council (SNAC) in your school benefits both the students and your school nutrition program. A SNAC serves as a link between students, student nutrition personnel, parents, administrators and the community. Not only is a SNAC a vehicle to spread the word about the important role good nutrition plays in students' lives, but it provides important feedback from students on what they like - or don't like about their school foodservice program. By involving students with NAC you will reinforce the idea that school nutrition programs are for them. You need only 3 ingredients! • Approximately 10-15 enthusiastic students • A dedicated school foodservice professional • Fresh ideas and an active imagination Students interested in being part of your school SNAC may contact your school principal or Mary Ann McCann, Student Nutrition Director at 758-5214

Breakfast: The Meal Of Champions You probably heard it from your own parents: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But now you're the one saying it — to your sleepy, frazzled, grumpy kids, who insist "I'm not hungry" as you try to get everyone fed and moving in the morning. Parents need not worry as breakfast is available to all students in Taos Schools. As part of the educational day, Breakfast After the Bell is available to all elementary schools. Grab ‘n Go Breakfast is available at Taos High School and Taos Middle School. Why Bother With Breakfast? Breakfast is a great way to give the body the refueling it needs. Kids who eat breakfast tend to eat healthier overall and are more likely to participate in physical activities — two great ways to help maintain a healthy weight. Skipping breakfast can make kids feel tired, restless, or irritable. In the morning, their bodies need to refuel for the day ahead after going without food for 8 to 12 hours during sleep. Their mood and energy can drop by midmorning if they don't eat at least a small morning meal. Breakfast also can help keep kids' weight in check. Breakfast kick-starts the body's metabolism, the process by which the body converts the fuel in food to energy. And when the metabolism gets moving, the body starts burning calories. Also, people who don't eat breakfast often consume more calories throughout the day and are more likely to be overweight. That's because someone who skips breakfast is likely to get famished before lunchtime and snack on high-calorie foods or overeat at lunch. Breakfast Brain Power It's important for kids to have breakfast every day, but what they eat in the morning is crucial too. Choosing breakfast foods that are rich in whole grains, fiber, and protein while low in added sugar may boost kids' attention span, concentration, and memory — which they need to learn in school. Kids who eat breakfast are more likely to get fiber, calcium, and other important nutrients. They also tend to keep their weight under control, have lower blood cholesterol levels and fewer absences from school, and make fewer trips to the school nurse with stomach complaints related to hunger. Parents or community members with questions regarding the Breakfast Program in Taos Municipal Schools may contact Mary Ann McCann, Student Nutrition Director at 758-5214.

Nutrition Programs available to the Taos community National School Lunch Program (NSLP) The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is the oldest and largest of the Child Nutrition Programs, celebrating 50 years in 1996. It is a federally assisted meal program that provides balanced, low-cost or free lunches to thousands of children in Colorado each day. Since 1946, the National School Lunch Program has made it possible for schools to serve appealing lunches designed to meet the needs of children. In recent years, concerns have emerged regarding the overall nutritional content of school meals. These concerns address findings that the diet of Americans has changed from being low in nutrients and adequate in calories to containing an overabundance of calories, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium. At the same time, Americans eat too few grains, fruits and vegetables. A good diet can help to reduce the occurrence of chronic diseases and promote good health and well being. The USDA School Meals Initiative for Healthy Children underscores our national responsibility to provide healthy school meals that are consistent with the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans

School Breakfast Program (SBP) The School Breakfast Program (SBP) provides a nutritious morning meal. This program is recognized as one of the most beneficial of the federal nutrition programs. It meets a vital need of feeding thousands of children in Colorado, who otherwise may not eat a nutritious breakfast. Participation in the program has been shown to improve learning and test performance. Specific "meal patterns" are required in the SBP, and Schools that participate in the SBP receive funding assistance similar to the National School Lunch Program. USDA SBP

Afterschool Care Snack Program (ACSP) The intent of the Afterschool Care Snack Program (ACSP) is to assist schools that operate organized programs of care, which include education and enrichment activities known to help reduce or prevent children’s involvement in juvenile crime or other high risk behavior, by providing snacks. Eligible programs serving snacks to children that meet USDA requirements may be claimed for reimbursement.

Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) provides children in participating schools with a variety of free fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the school day. The program is an effective and creative way of introducing fresh fruits and vegetables as healthy snack options. The FFVP also encourages schools to develop partnerships at the State and local level for support in implementing and operating the program. This program is seen as an important catalyst for change in efforts to combat childhood obesity by helping children learn more healthful eating habits. The FFVP introduces school children to a variety of produce that they otherwise might not have had the opportunity to sample.

Emergency Feeding School Food Authorities (SFAs) participating in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs (NSLP and SBP) and sponsors participating in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) can respond to situations resulting from damage or disruptions due to natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, and floods.

10 tips

build a healthy meal 10 tips for healthy meals

Nutrition

Education Series

A healthy meal starts with more vegetables and fruits and smaller portions of protein and grains. Think about how you can adjust the portions on your plate to get more of what you need without too many calories. And don’t forget dairy—make it the beverage with your meal or add fat-free or low-fat dairy products to your plate.

1

make half your plate veggies and fruits

Vegetables and fruits are full of nutrients and may help to promote good health. Choose red, orange, and darkgreen vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and broccoli.

2

add lean protein

Choose protein foods, such as lean beef and pork, or chicken, turkey, beans, or tofu. Twice a week, make seafood the protein on your plate.

3

include whole grains

Aim to make at least half your grains whole grains. Look for the words “100% whole grain” or “100% whole wheat” on the food label. Whole grains provide more nutrients, like fiber, than refined grains.

4

don’t forget the dairy

Pair your meal with a cup of fat-free or low-fat milk. They provide the same amount of calcium and other essential nutrients as whole milk, but less fat and calories. Don’t drink milk? Try soymilk (soy beverage) as your beverage or include fat-free or low-fat yogurt in your meal.

5

avoid extra fat Using heavy gravies or sauces will add fat and

take your time

Savor your food. Eat slowly, enjoy the taste and textures, and pay attention to how you feel. Be mindful. Eating very quickly may cause you to eat too much.

use a smaller plate

Use a smaller plate at meals to help with portion control. That way you can finish your entire plate and feel satisfied without overeating.

take control of your food

Eat at home more often so you know exactly what you are eating. If you eat out, check and compare the nutrition information. Choose healthier options such as baked instead of fried.

9

try new foods

Keep it interesting by picking out new foods you’ve never tried before, like mango, lentils, or kale. You may find a new favorite! Trade fun and tasty recipes with friends or find them online.

10

satisfy your sweet tooth in a healthy way

Indulge in a naturally sweet dessert dish—fruit! Serve a fresh fruit cocktail or a fruit parfait made with yogurt. For a hot dessert, bake apples and top with cinnamon.

School-Based Mentoring Program in Taos County Although it takes place at schools, our School-Based Mentoring program isn’t limited to the classroom. Some children read or do homework with their volunteer mentor (called a “Big”), but they also can do activities such as eating lunch together, playing on the playground or playing basketball in the gym. At the end of the day, it’s really all about starting a friendship, providing guidance and inspiring children to reach their potential.

Dear Parents and Students, On behalf of the Questa School Board of Education, we want to take this opportunity to welcome all of our students and staff to the 2014-2015 school year. We are very fortunate to have the leadership, vision and energy of our new superintendent, Mrs. Valerie Trujillo, who will ensure that our students will receive a quality education. There are tremendous and positive improvements taking place such as safe schools, teacher quality, bullying policies, facilities and maintenance, USDA nutritional food for breakfast and lunch, and technology learning. We, as the school board, commit ourselves to build teamwork with the administration, faculty/staff, students, parents and community. We stand by our Mission Statement “Challenge all students to accelerate their learning through rigorous instruction” and we view are Vision Statement as a goal, “All Students will graduate college or career ready”. QISD Board President Jose C. Lovato

Questa Independent Schools Federal Title and State Bilingual Programs TITLE I – Part A: Improving the Academic Achievement of the Disadvantaged

Title I is the largest federal education program for elementary and secondary schools. These funds are targeted to high poverty schools and are used to provide supplementary educational services to students who are educationally disadvantaged or at risk of failing to meet the state standards. Schools have the option to follow a school wide or targeted model.

TITLE II – Part A: Preparing, Training and Recruiting High Quality Teachers and Principals

The main goal is to provide funds to increase student and academic achievement by improving teacher quality and recruiting more highly qualified teachers and principals into schools. In alignment with Section 1119(a)(3) the Questa Independent School District strives to ensure that all teachers teaching in the core content areas within the school district are highly qualified.

TITLE III - Part A: English Language Acquisition, Language Enhancement, and Academic Achievement

Under Civil Right Law and the No Child Left Behind Act, school districts that receive Federal financial assistance have an obligation to identify and serve all ELL/LEP students. The purpose of Title III is to develop educational programs that will help ensure that Limited English Proficient (LEP)/English Language Learners (ELLs), statute uses (LEP), attain English proficiency, succeed at core academic subjects, and meet the same state academic content and student achievement standards, expected of all children.

State Bilingual Program

Developing proficiency in Spanish and becoming biliterate and bilingual is the focus of the Questa Bilingual Program. In addition, the goal of the program is to ensure that students meet state academic content standards and benchmarks in all areas. In Questa, all schools follow the “Heritage Language” model. This model is designed to provide instruction in Spanish, the home language. For students who are also English Language Learners, the language program model includes English as a Second Language instruction.
