ou’ve got to know the rules before you can break the rules, and likewise, you need to have a plan before you can go off-script. No plan is perfect, but any plan is better than no plan at all, every time. Regardless of the scope or cost of your wedding, it behooves most parties to plan at least six months in advance. And remember, the more time you give yourself to plan, the less stress you should experience. Weddings are supposed to be fun, right? Checklists are a great way for brides and grooms to stay on track. A well-planned wedding will be more fun for everyone. A checklist doesn’t have to be a strict guideline and not everything will get done or even wind up needing to be done, but it will
help things go smoothly. Obviously, not everything on this list will apply to your wedding, feel free to adjust to your needs.

Judicial District Court directed her to do so. Taos residents Dale Schuette and Reg Stark sought the order after they tried to obtain a marriage license in Taos and were turned away. Schuette and Stark rejected the idea of traveling to counties such as Santa Fe or Bernalillo, which had already begun issuing licenses to same-sex couples. Schuette contended that the couple “should be able to get married right here in Taos.” Martínez was unsure whether she could alter the existing Taos County marriage license forms to say “applicant 1” and “applicant 2” instead of the existing gender-specific titles, fearing the penned alterations would invalidate the forms. But County Attorney Robert Malone assured her she could alter the forms without invalidating the documents, and Martínez told Stark and Schuette to

return the following day, Aug. 28. At 8 a.m., Martínez arrived at the county building to find not only Stark and Schuette waiting there to obtain marriage licenses, but five other couples as well. “This is gay pride,” Schuette told The Taos News on that day. “The marriages, the ceremonies ...” A few weeks later, the Taos County Clerk’s Office had issued more than two dozen marriage licenses. At the time, Martínez told The Taos News she had received calls from same-sex couples from out of state, inquiring about the process in Taos to receive a marriage licenses. Martínez was enthusiastic that Taos County issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples had the potential to attract visitors from out-of-state, thus generating gross receipts tax revenue for the county. One of the couples who came to Taos to wed was Cheryl Hamilton and Kareen McCullough, who traveled to Taos from Denver to obtain a marriage license. The couple praised Taos County officials for their eagerness to help. Judge Jeff McElroy married the couple on the Río Grande Gorge bridge despite his fear of heights. 2014
The couple praised Taos County officials for their eagerness to help. Judge Jeff McElroy married the couple on the Río Grande Gorge bridge despite his fear of heights. Hamilton and McCullough stayed at Ojo Caliente and had their post-ceremonial dinner at The Love Apple restaurant. They were considering purchasing jewelry from local vendors here for their wedding party to wear at the ceremony they were planning back in Denver. “We’ve been trying to figure out where to go to get married,” McCollough said. “We looked at Iowa, we looked at Minneapolis, we looked at California, but they’re so far away, and this is very close for us. You can get a license to get married and not have to wait.” On Oct. 23, the State Supreme Court began holding hearings about whether samesex marriage would be legal across the state. A second chance at romance By Teresa Dovalpage

here there was fire, ashes remain, an old Spanish saying goes. But Sandra “Zandi” Richardson and Runno Sarv proved that rekindling the flame isn’t that difficult, after all. Richardson and Sarv met at a Christmas party in 1980 in Sydney, Australia. “When I looked across the room and saw this handsome guy, I asked a friend to introduce him to me,” Richardson said. “But my friend didn’t think we would fit together. He was ‘the capitalist who owned the hotel we were in’ and I was a spirited freelance filmmaker. I had a red afro and wore hippie clothes while he looked like a businessman, so we did look like an unlikely couple.” 18

However, they got married a year later at the same place where they had met. “I then inherited two girls, his daughters, who were 14 and 16,” Richardson said. “Though it was challenging at first, with time and love they became my family too.” After nearly 10 years, the marriage didn’t work out. Despite some common interests and the fun they had traveling together to places like Bhutan, Thailand, Africa and India, the couple split up in 1991.
Long distance reconnection
Twenty-two years later, they reconnected through a mutual friend. Sarv was still living in Sydney, while Richardson was happily settled in Taos. The first time we got on the phone, after so many years, they talked for three hours.

They carried on an over-the-phone relationship for several months and eventually skyped, too. But personal contact was the next step. He invited her to visit him again in Australia. She accepted. A couple of months later, the pair went traveling together again, to Jordan and Ethiopia. “We both realized that traveling was one thing we had always enjoyed together,” he said. In 2012 Sarv came for Christmas and fell in love with Taos. He also found out that he was very much in love with Richardson — again.
The right place to propose A few months later Sarv invited Richardson to go to India with the intention of proposing to her. “What’s more romantic than asking the 2014
woman of your dreams to marry you at the Taj Mahal?” he asked. However, the day before, in Jaipur, they went into a jewelry shop and he realized that this was an appropriate place to pop the question. “When I looked at him, he was on his knee asking, ‘Will you marry me — again?” Richardson recalls with an impish smile. “After I said ‘yes,’ all our fellow travelers began to applaud. It was quite a scene.” He bought her a traditional Indian engagement right there. When they returned to Australia, he had another ring custom-made for her. “So now I have two engagement rings from him … perfect for the second time around,” she said.
Marriage and maturity
Richardson and Sarv agree it’s

The best part of round two “When people are dating, they don’t get to know the real person,” said Sarv. “It doesn’t necessarily mean that they are pretending to be nicer or smarter, but they are showing only their best face. Living together is the only way to really get to know someone. Well, Sandi and I had already done that so there were no nasty surprises.” Another plus: living with someone you already know is comfortable, Richardson added. “It’s like wearing a good pair of slippers … they are so cozy and nice,” she said. “The second time around, there is never that kind of awkwardness that you often experience with the ‘new person’ in your life.”

Zandi Richardson nd Runno Sarv’s Taos wedding. Second time continued from page 19 fun and energizing to be with someone “who is on the same wavelength and who really knows you.” In the end, they decided they belonged together. That was why they remarried in Taos Sept. 22, 2013. “A marriage needs to be based on acceptance,” Sarv said. “Sand I are very different persons. She is very spiritual. I am not. We used to debate that a lot. Now she has a personal altar and her prayer flags … and I am happy for her. I don’t try to change her and she doesn’t try to change me.” “That’s maturity,” Richardson says. “And maturity comes with age. We have learned to accept and appreciate, even love, differences.” Of course, they need to have some things in common too. “For example, it was important for me that he liked Taos,” said Richardson. “And essential he got along with my five cats.” “I am a dog person,” he said. “But I enjoy cats too. I am adaptable.” 20

n
Love in two continents Richardson and Sarv look forward to traveling together more. But they don’t plan to spend every minute together. Not yet, at least. “I wouldn’t like to live full-time in the United States just yet,” he said. “I have my family and my business in Australia. I just can’t drop everything and move here.” “And I wouldn’t like to live full-time in Sydney,” Richardson said. “I am happy to go back for a while and spend time with his daughters and his 99-year-old mother, who are still very much my family. But I also love my life and friends and home here in Taos.” That means spending lots of money on plane tickets. “Our love is worth it,” Sarv said. Do they have any advice to couples who have found out, like them, that the grass isn’t greener on the other side? “Practice unconditional love, instead of trying to change the other person,” Richardson said. “Don’t hold onto old grievances. Let them go and accept the other person for whom he or she is. Enjoy the differences and enjoy life.”

By that time, Martínez said Taos County had issued 77 licenses to same-sex couples, and the county was already in compliance with the supreme court ruling. “We’ve already changed our forms, our certificates, our licenses,” she told The Taos News. “We won’t need to do anything. We’re ahead of other counties.” Barbara Sheppard, who in August received a license to wed her partner, Jean-Vi Lenthe, told The Taos News that the court’s decision was a tremendous victory for the gay community, but that “there is much more work to be done.” “Our good fortune has been recognized,” she said. A Taos Ski Valley wedding
By Cindy Brown
“A
n event of the spirit” is how the Rev. Jewel Howard describes marriage. She says the magnetic energy of Taos and the beautiful mountain setting come together to make Taos Ski Valley a memorable place for a wedding. She has married couples next to the waterfall by the Phoenix Grill, as well as on the deck at the Bavarian and in other locations throughout the Ski Valley. Not only is the scenery beautiful, there are also a variety of venues with different menu choices for the reception and atmospheres,

including small cozy inns, larger conference centers and hotels. As Jamie Schulze of the Bavarian says, “People like to get married in the Ski Valley because it is outdoorsy, yet civilized.” At the Amizette Inn Bed and Breakfast, couples hold their ceremonies on the deck overlooking the Río Hondo and then follow with a reception outdoors or in the restaurant. Birds and other wildlife are often seen along the banks of the river. The 10-room inn hosts small, intimate weddings. Menus include more elaborate meals of steak and seafood or simpler, more affordable dinners with pasta. For larger events, the ski resort itself is a popular choice. Outdoor weddings next to the river or waterfall can be spectacularly beautiful, but keep in mind that the weather can change from sunny skies to thunderstorms very quickly. Martha Burke of Taos Ski Valley Resort recommends that couples always have a backup plan for outdoor ceremonies. She says that both the Phoenix Grill, up higher on the mountain near chairlift #4, and the Martini Bar at the base are available for weddings and receptions. Many people choose Taos Ski Valley in the summer due the cool temperatures and the opportunity for the wedding party and guests to experience all that the area has to offer, including hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and horseback riding. TSV continued recreational opportunities and special events will just from page 26 keep growing as the new owners of Taos Ski Valley take over operations. Weddings at the Ski Valley take place throughout the year. There are couples who want to combine a ski trip with a wedding and even those who want to get married on skis. Howard reminds people coming from lower elevations the Ski Valley base is at 9,200 feet and a plan involving skiing all day and getting married at night may not be realistic. For flowers, Margaret Palmer at Red Cat Melissiana recommends hardy, seasonal blossoms in compact bunches. She says she likes to work with couples to find out what is special to them, so she can help create a unique look that reflects their interests and personalities. Palmer says that Taos Ski Valley is a great place for rustic beauty and thinking out of the box for themes and decorations. She recommends emphasizing the natural outdoor beauty and unique architecture of the buildings. Ribbons, seasonal flowers, and strings of lights on trees and balconies can create a “woodsy romantic look. Let The Taos News share your good news
ou’ve made the proposal (or accepted said proposal), and now you’re planning a wedding. Congratulations on this major event in your life! After you’ve let your closest friends and family know about the big event, share the news with the world, via The Taos News. The newspaper is happy to print notices about engagements and weddings, and will do so as a free service to the community as space permits. Be sure to include all the information you want the public to be aware of and nothing more. You can also use the forms provided in this special section. Engagement announcements normally contain information about the prospective bride and groom, parents, hometowns and the wedding date. Wedding announcements often include information about the husband and wife, their families, where and when the wedding took place and the members of the wedding party, etc. Drop your announcement off in person at The Taos News, 226 Albright St. (be sure 2014
meganblinks.com
to include a phone number where we can reach you if we have questions). You may also submit a photo, which we can scan into our system. Our preference is that you send all the information, including photos, by email. If you are able to do that, send the announcement to editor@taosnews.com. If you email the photo, please send it the largest size possible (we print at 200 dpi). — Joan Livingston, editor
