Congratulations to the Class of 2020 Dear graduates of Taos High School, Taos Academy, Vista Grande High School, Peñasco High School, Questa High School, Moreno Valley High School, University of New Mexico-Taos, You have already gone down in history as the graduates in the Year of COVID-19— certainly an unwanted recognition. However, you just could turn out to become the Amazing Class of 2020 … the graduates who changed—if not saved—the world. It’s difficult to remain positive in ordinary circumstances, so your job in these deviant days is a tough ask. We rely on you to forge ahead and help us all get through this with your positivity, new ideas and knowledge. It is our hope that this magazine in your honor, and continued coverage in this week’s edition of The Taos News, will provide a small boost and a big recognition of your accomplishment during this time when you should 4

have been going to prom and parties and walking in your cap and gown with your friends and co-grads in front of your families to accept your hard-earned diploma.

ON THE COVER

Graduates react as their senior theme song is played over the radio Saturday (May 16) at the start of the Moreno Valley High School Seniors Parade in Angel Fire.

You have already proven your resilience and your creativity. There have been home proms in garages, small family graduation ceremonies, socially distanced mini parties, car processionals and virtual ceremonies to confer diplomas. Pride, laughter and tears were not missing this year. If your future plans have changed remember the old adage that when one door closes, another opens. Change is inevitable throughout life; but, is almost always exciting and good. Modify your plans and go with Plan B, C, D, or whatever plan it takes and rise like the Phoenix through the ashes of the coronavirus. We need you! Congratulations and thanks to you all!

Peñasco valedictorian has her sights on veterinary school By Doug Cantwell, Taos News

A

cademics, athletics, animals: Peñasco High School senior Ariana MacAuley has them all covered – in spades.

As class valedictorian, she will speak on behalf of her classmates at the PHS commencement, which is scheduled for June 27 (or July 11 if need be). MacAuley was tapped by the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society during her sophomore year and has served as its secretary for the last two years. She received recognition as a National Merit Scholarship Finalist and also a Northern New Mexico Super Scholar earlier this year. In the fall, MacAuley will apply her considerable talents at Stanford University, where she will major in biology with the intention of going to veterinary school afterward.

Several Peñasco graduates pose for a photo Saturday (May 23) following a celebration to honor Peñasco High School’s Class of 2020.

She has worked with animals for years, raising and showing pigs at the county fair as a member of the 4-H Club, which she served as president for five years. Recently, she has shadowed one of the vets at Smith’s Veterinary Hospital in Santa Fe to get a feel for what the profession actually requires. Why does she want to be a vet? “I’ve just always really enjoyed working with animals,” MacAuley said. “I think it would be a challenging and rewarding career. Every day is different, so I wouldn’t get bored. I also have an aunt who is a vet and she has been a great role model.” MacAuley has left her mark on Peñasco athletics as well, serving as captain of the stellar PHS basketball team, which nearly won the state championship in 2018 and again in 2020. She also served as captain of the volleyball team, which finished as district champion and competed in the state tournament in 2017 and 2019. MacAuley ran track as well, competing as a sprinter in the 200 and 400 meter races and 1600 meter relays. She ran cross-country for three years, winning the state championship with her teammates in 2016 and 2017.

QUESTA HIGH SCHOOL Stories by Sara Martinez

Questa valedictorian pushes her limits to accomplishment only did Rael work hard at school, she also found time to work after school and in the summer. She has completed countless volunteer hours in the community helping her church and many other community ventures.

Isabelle Rael prioritizes family, community service and excellence

I

SABELLE RAEL is a hard-working, community-focused, multitalented student. Now Rael can add class of 2020 valedictorian to her list of accomplishments. Not only did she excel in her studies at Questa High School, but she will also leave her high school career having earned an associate degree from University of New Mexico-Taos in liberal arts. Rael has always been driven and focused in all areas of her life.

A product of small-town values, Rael said that she enjoys the simple things in life, and spending time with her family. The first child of Michael Jr. and Annette Rael, she describes herself as independent and determined. Like so many successful people, she won’t quit until the job is done and pushes her limits in order to accomplish her goals.

COURTESY PHOTO

During her school years, she was involved in sports – volleyball, basketball and soccer, as well as extracurricular activities – including mariachi and drama, and was a Non-Violence Works youth mentor. Rael was in the National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society since seventh grade and on Principal’s Roll through her whole school career. Not

Throughout high school, Rael used every opportunity to help her school and achieve more than was expected. In the hopes of being more informed about the challenges facing public schools, she participated in the 2018 New Mexico Public Education Department’s Student Leader Network. She currently serves as class president, which she has held for several years and has also been the class representative and treasurer. Rael recognizes that having supportive people around her is what helped her along the way. She acknowledges, “I couldn’t thank my family enough for everything they have helped me with throughout the years. They have been my rock through everything. I am also very thankful for my friends and teachers at

Questa High School. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today.” Her teachers, family, friends and community members would agree that she is the type of person who gives so much of herself to others, that the feelings are mutual. Her parents had this to say about her, “We are beyond proud of Isabelle! She puts all her hard work and effort into helping others. Once she sets her mind to something, she goes above and beyond to achieve her goals. Isabelle, always remember to take pride in how far you have come and have faith in how far you can go. We love you.” In the fall of 2020, Rael will move to Las Vegas, New Mexico, to attend New Mexico Highlands University to pursue a degree in social work. She said, “Helping those in need has always been my passion. I want to help change the lives of young children, giving them an opportunity to follow their dreams. In the future, this may be a way that I could give back to our community.”

Julianna Sandoval Class of 2020 Salutatorian: ready and poised for success

ULIANNA SANDOVAL has earned the spot of salutatorian in the Questa High School Class of 2020.

to have teachers that care, believe in and encourage me as a student to make something of myself.” Sandoval noted that none of this would be possible without a tremendous support system. “It ranges from multiple generations and all their different paths and stories that have contributed to mine.”

This is a class that has excelled in academics. Earning the second spot from the top is no easy task. As Sandoval makes plans for her future, she talked about the people who have helped her build such a strong foundation. Sandoval is the youngest of five children, COURTESY PHOTO and “born into a loving family.” She described her parents, Vikki and David Sandoval, as “wonderful parents that and spending time with friends and family. have always encouraged me to be true to When asked what Sandoval thought myself, be kind and make the most of every contributed to her success, she responded, situation.” She is proud of where she grew “I’ve been surrounded by so many hardup and describes it as “a town that was built working and talented people. Having had on faith, family and New Mexican culture.” such positive role models around me, I Sandoval enjoys practicing music, reading, strove to emulate them. I am also grateful

Her parents expressed a similar sentiment for their daughter and the honor she has earned. “As parents, words cannot describe the pride and love we feel for our daughter. From an early age, she constantly showed both of us how loving, caring and thoughtful she could be toward everyone. She always strived to do her very best at everything she attempted. Learning always came easy for her. Now that she is preparing to leave home to pursue her future endeavors, we as

parents cannot express how very proud of her we are and how thankful and grateful to God for blessing us with an amazing daughter.” As for future plans, Sandoval had this to say, “I love where I grew up, but I am so excited to start the next chapter of my life attending UNM in Albuquerque. I will be majoring in management information systems and I hope that with the education that I receive, I will make a difference in people’s lives. To me, success can be measured by the difference you make in the world and in people. I was fortunate to grow up in a small town like Questa where everyone knows everyone else, and it shows in a great way. Because of that, I want to become a positive role model to other people, just like how I was surrounded with good influences when I was younger.”

e still got the cap and gown, but I took my own photos, and my friends did, and we post our own pictures,” she said. “We did not do yearbook because we didn’t have journalism class.” Other things she will miss? “I am not worried about prom but was excited about graduation – just walking with my class.

“I feel sad, and worried – I want graduation to go nicely and feel like we’ve achieved a big step in our life,” said Aguirre, who was accepted to New Mexico Highlands University for the fall. “I want to study to be a lawyer or an EMT.”

VGHS senior AnnaLiz Duran, the youngest of eight siblings in her family, is definitely “bummed out.”

At first, she cried, she said. “My senior year has been one of my better years. We had a lot of internships planned out, like for landscaping – rehabilitating the land, bringing it back – that got cut short.”

12

“I have mixed feelings,” she explained. “I want the governor to open things up, and celebrate the way my siblings have, but at same time I don’t want to be selfish and don’t want anybody to get sick, and I have a lot of family at risk.” Duran did not want a virtual graduation: “I won’t get the experience I need – that moment that every senior looks forward to of ‘Man, I’ve accomplished it!’ Getting my diploma handed to me through a screen makes me sad.”

“I’ve seen all my other siblings graduate and I really looked forward to mine and thought it would be great – 2020, what a year year to graduate in – so it’s heartbreaking,” she expressed. “I’ve had about four other siblings go to VGH and three to graduate from there – we had a little family tree.”

Duran named some of the shortfalls of a truncated senior year, and having to complete her studies from home. “I had economics, financial literacy – very important classes I am going to need when I graduate – important things I needed to know and I’m not gonna

Like Aguirre, Duran was working on her senior presentation slideshow. “Mine is based all about poetry and poetry therapy – I am a poet, have been definitely since I was in fourth grade. My teachers encouraged me – so what better way to talk about my high school year than to talk about poetry – what I am passionate about and really good at.” What kind of graduation would she be content with?

Her summer plans are on hold, however, such as a family vacation to San Antonio, Texas. She is looking for a job, “but no one is hiring,” she said.

know. I can’t get the same education. I feel like I am teaching myself. There is only so much you can do across from the computer screen.”

Duran said she does not even have pictures of her senior year, no prom and she hasn’t seen her two best friends since the last day of school in mid-March. Duran wrestled for Taos High School and has exciting plans to attend Iowa Centerville Junior College in the fall on a sports scholarship. She will represent the first all-female wrestling team for the school. She remains optimistic. “I’ll just pick up the pieces and roll on,” she said. “There is going to be a rainbow after this.”

TAOS ACADEMY Taos Academy hopes for live ceremony in June The Taos Academy senior class, along with their parents, made the decision to postpone the original graduation date of May 15 until June 26 in hopes of having a live ceremony. The school did mark the original date with a diploma conferment. The Student Advisory Council has decided to invite the class of 2020 to next year’s prom, which will include crowning of king and queen for the class of 2020. A diploma conferment was held virtually to acknowledge a graduation date for execution of completed transcripts. A live link was sent out to seniors and their families so they could join in and watch. The students will receive their actual diplomas on June 26 at the live ceremony. The future graduation will also include speeches from valedictorian Lauren McAllister, co-salutatorian speeches from Nalia Kast and Nadia Macdonald and “The Star-Spangled Banner” will be sung by Jimena Ballesteros. In addition to the valedictorian and salutatorians, the following graduates will be recognized for their honors and awards: Marion Balsamo – Daniel’s Fund Scholarship recipient, champion skier and rodeo, Honor Society Anastacia Gonzalez – varsity athlete for multiple sports, community involvement Jimena Ballesteros – EQ team president, Night of 1,000 Stars host, Governor’s STEM Challenge state champion, STEM research club, Blood Hero Cord recipient Isaiah Sanchez – Big Brothers Big Sisters, EQ team, culinary arts, music, Blood Hero Cord recipient Mikaela Romero – multiple varsity sports such as volleyball, basketball, track and cheer; Blood Hero Cord recipient, Honor Society Aiden Macdonald – varsity soccer and theater, Honor Society Sean Flory – varsity soccer and theater, Honor Society

COURTESY PHOTO

Co-salutatorian shares her speech Taos Academy’s mission is to promote academic excellence through specialized encouragement and support. Any achievements I have made are due to inspiration from my peers and teachers. I am so grateful for all the lessons I have learned from my high school years here and I know I will take them with me. Taos Academy cultivates an environment that enables teachers to build a curriculum that caters to student success and an expansion of our perspective. It all has been vital in shaping who I am. I first want to acknowledge that we did not get to experience the second half of our last semester of senior year the way we had planned it. We didn’t get prom, a senior sunset, a senior prank or a last celebration together. Many people faced increased economic hardships and the fear of losing family members. There have been feelings of despair as a result. In response I want to appreciate all the memories we have been able to create over the years that I have previously taken for granted. While acknowledging all the times we could have had I want to go forward and cherish the memories we have yet to create. Throughout the years, I have seen students take part in innovative school programs, events and community organizations. We have worked hard in STEM, live and online classes. Furthermore, our peers have worked diligently in jobs outside of school and with community organizations. Whatever our individual paths were, they have led us here and not one is more valuable than another. This uniqueness has

created our community – whether we are getting together to break the dress code or setting up for school events. This, alongside our accomplishments, is what creates Taos Academy’s atmosphere. We have been able to see such accomplishments due to the encouragement of our teachers. The curriculum you’ve built has allowed me to step outside of my own bubble and gain a better understanding of the world around us. Without Taos Academy staff we wouldn’t be graduating today so I’d like to take a moment to thank them for their hard work and integrity. I want to recognize all students in the senior class. I hold value to a system that encourages education for every student equally for the sake of learning instead of one that encourages competition for the leading spot. In many ways Taos Academy has upheld the values of learning. That being said I want to recognize the important role every student plays in upholding the ecosystem of school. UNM–TAOS

Message from the Chancellor

Message from the Dean of Instruction

Congratulations to the UNM-Taos 2020 graduates!

Congratulations to the UNM-Taos Graduating Class of 2020!

You did it! You completed your spring semester courses under unconventional circumstances, and you fulfilled the requirements needed to earn your certificate or diploma from the University of New Mexico-Taos.

What an amazing accomplishment you have achieved under such unique and trying circumstances.

The COVID-19 pandemic required us to make the difficult decision to create alternative plans for the spring graduation ceremony. We wish we could celebrate your achievement face-toface. However, that doesn’t diminish how proud we are of all of you! For those of you earning your certificate or associate degrees, I wish you continued success. Despite the current situation, I am confident that the investment you have made in yourself will better prepare you and situate you for the future. If you are planning to transfer to a four-year program, I encourage you to reach out to your university of choice and to continue that pathway. For those earning your High School Equivalency (HSE), we expect to see you enrolled in a UNM-Taos certificate or degree program this summer or fall. The current crisis requires us to do some old things in new ways, but we are still doing them – so that you can continue pursuing your educational goals. Above all, regardless of your next venture, I wish all of you and those you care about continued success and good health. Go Lobos! Patrick L. Valdez, Ph.D., chancellor, UNM-Taos

28

This has been a semester like no other, and one that we could never have predicted. I’m so proud of all your resilience and determination in completing your educational journey. While we would prefer sharing this celebratory moment in your lives with you in person – inclusive of your family, friends and classmates – we know it’s not safe to do so at this time. Thus, we are finding new and innovative ways to acknowledge your accomplishments. We know this semester brought great challenges to students, faculty, staff and the Taos community as a whole. The pivot to remote learning presented even more challenges, but also many success stories. We also know that the foundation set by your time here at UNM-Taos will serve you well in your future endeavors, and we can’t wait to see what you will do next. UNM-Taos is here to help you transition into the workforce or to help you transfer to a four-year university. To all the High School Equivalency (HSE) students, we are proud to welcome you into the Lobo community. Randi Archuleta, Ph.D., dean of instruction, UNM-Taos

UNM Letter from Julia Shang, Student Government Association President Dear Graduating Class of 2020, The path of higher education is not an easy one, especially in a rural community like Taos where resources are limited and options are few. It takes a lot of sacrifice and determination for a student to persevere from the first day of classes to the last, even under normal circumstances. But this year has been far from ordinary. The world as we know it has been turned wayward by the unexpected outbreak of COVID-19. With each new day comes a new update on how we all must adapt to the constant change. We long for the normality of the past, and fear for the uncertainty of the future. However, you have not let this awful surprise distract you from your academic goals. Now you should stand with pride. You have become beacons of hope in this dark storm. Even after overcoming the common struggles of being a student, you have overcome an even greater setback with the onset of a global pandemic. Congratulations on graduating with the diploma, certificate or degree you worked so vigilantly for. Let this not be a farewell in terms of academic success, but a welcoming to the bright future ahead of you. Sincerely, Julia Shang, SGA President, UNM-Taos

UNM–TAOS Jeffrey Oxford, a first-rate student and a student of firsts Student Jeffrey Oxford (general studies) experienced many firsts during his time at University of New Mexico-Taos. He is a first-generation student — the first one in his family to graduate with a college degree. Canadian by birth, Oxford was also the first international student to begin and complete his degree at UNM-Taos. With no frame of reference for what to expect in his first year of college, he started his first semester in the General Sciences program with an emphasis in construction technology. He learned instruction on how to be successful in higher education. He learned about self-reflection and through that process, realized his true passion lay in the arts. “In addition to discovering a new passion in art, the second semester was also a pivotal moment in revealing my desire to help others,” Oxford said. “At this point, I was averaging

a 4.0 GPA and was successfully utilizing many of the time-saving study skills I had learned just one semester prior. I felt inspired to share what I had learned with my fellow students; therefore, I applied for a position with the Center for Academic Success and Achievement (CASA). I was hired as a supplemental instruction leader for algebra and the freshman prep class known as ‘First Year Experience.’ To this date, it has been a truly rewarding experience to support both the instructors and students in this capacity. Oxford added that the community and connection that he quickly established with the faculty and students of the arts department became the fuel for a series of creative and academic successes. “Going into the third semester, I was now leading workshops for CASA and had been awarded the Andy Johnson Creative Arts Scholarship for my mentoring

Nursing program pins 12 students

influence on others while demonstrating dedication and commitment to the field of the arts. In the midst of all this, I realized how the presence of support and encouragement within an artistic community was the key to my educational success.” With this revelation, Oxford started formulating a way to bring art into our current curriculum that was so heavily influenced by STEM. He watched students excel in the classroom, yet perform poorly on exams. “This inspired me to find a means to foster growth and elevate the students to achieve their goals. With this intention in mind, I felt it imperative to address the test-taking disparities first. Working as a supplemental instruction leader provided me the perfect opportunity to develop a ‘Preparing for Exams’ workshop followed by a pre- and postquestionnaire to track progress.

I am now ready to apply everything that I have learned thus far to make this endeavor become reality. I [presented] this workshop in class on Oct. 29, 2019. This process has been an immensely rewarding journey that I am excited to share with my peers.” Oxford was also involved in the UNM-Taos Student Government Association and worked hard to advocate for his fellow students and make campus a more inviting, engaging and supportive environment for all. He and another student, Caleb Adams (pre-science), were named to the Phi Beta Kappa All-State Academic Team for outstanding intellectual achievement, leadership and community and campus engagement.

Academic Team — America’s most prestigious academic honor society — recognizes high achieving college students who demonstrate academic excellence and intellectual rigor combined with leadership and service that extends their education beyond the classroom to benefit society. As members of the All-State Team, Adams and Oxford qualify to be named to the prestigious All-USA Academic Team, an academic honor for students attending two-year colleges. Oxford is transferring to New Mexico Highlands University in the fall.

The Phi Theta Kappa All-State

The history of the nursing pinning ceremony harkens back to the 12th century when the Knights Hospitaliers, who cared for sick and injured crusaders, wore a large Maltese cross to identify them as care providers. In the 1860s, Florence Nightingale was awarded the Red Cross of St. George for her work during the Crimean War. Wanting to acknowledge a job well done to her nurses, Nightingale instituted the tradition of granting pins to nurses who had completed their training. This tradition continues to this day in every nursing program in the United States. Graduating nursing students also carry a lantern in honor of Nightingale, who was known in her time as the “Lady with the Lamp,” because she tirelessly walked among the beds of wounded soldiers during the night. The history of the nurse’s cap originated with the deaconesses, an early religious order of women who provided care to the sick and wore white head coverings. The coverings came to signify the role of the nurse. As society and the nursing profession changed, modernized and diversified, the cap was worn less and less. It is still, however, a recognizable symbol of the nursing profession. The following dozen UNM-Taos nursing graduates for 2020 will be given their pins, caps, and will carry lanterns as they embark on their health care careers: Isabel Alford, Fiona Breslin, Jeremy Burn, Melissa Clark, Stephanie Decker, Anthony Free, Amanda Hedgepeth, Johanna Lee, Liane Pellegrini, Kyline Rael, Tanya Trujillo and Sarah Turk.

Looking forward to many more memories and camping trips with you. We pray you are blessed with an abundance of Love, Health, Happiness, and Prosperity. Love, Your Nino, Nina and Primos

Isaiah, we are so proud of you and all that you have accomplished. You have been though so much and still have a long road ahead of you. You are a “WARRIOR “. It saddens us that Your Senior year was cut short. This was suppose to be your “year”, as a Taos High School Senior Class of 2020. Isaiah is a kind and sincere young man with a heart of gold. He has had many struggles that has caused him to miss out on so much of his school activities and his teenage years. Isaiah has an unknown illness that has caused him to miss quite a bit of school. In early middle school he was in the process of being admitted to Denver Children’s Hospital when he was involved in a horrible car accident. He spent several months, had 30+ surgeries and years of therapy. So this Senior year he decided no more feeding tubes and no more Dr. visits, just wanted a normal Senior year and would continue with his medical path to the Mayo Clinic after graduation. So yes, he was not able to go forth in sports because of his injuries, missed so much school because of his illness and now his last few months of being a Senior is gone too. Our hearts break for him, for all Seniors. May God Bless you and guide you on your next chapter in your book of life Isaiah.

Dream big and work hard. The best is yet to come! Love you ❤

CONGRATULATIONS ISAIAH-DAVID SUAZO. We love you so much. From Mom, Bubbi Javi, Sissy Aria, Grams, and Auntie Honey. YOU DID IT ZAYA!!!

District 5-2A MVP — in both volleyball and basketball. First Team All-State — in both sports, that is. And make that three years in a row for basketball. And as Peñasco girls basketball coach Mandy Montoya puts it, senior Carly Gonzales, the Taos News’ Female Athlete of the Year, is the best basketball player in the state.

Carly Gonzales TAOS COUNTY ALL-STARS 2020

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR By Matthew Narvaiz, Taos News

How about one of the best athletes in the state. “Her game was at a totally different level this year,” Montoya said. “This year she was the focal point of our offense. … My view is that she was the best [basketball] player in the state.”

Gonzales, who is graduating from Peñasco in late June after playing varsity sports for five years, will go down as one of the best athletes to come from a school in Taos County.

While many will call her quiet and reserved, Gonzales is also calculated and determined, and that’s why she was named MVP in both sports in her final year of high school. Not only that, it’s Gonzales’ innate ability to juggle multiple hands at once — she played volleyball and ran cross-country simultaneously, and, you know, the whole going to high school thing — and still come out a master learner in each craft. Gonzales’ volleyball head coach and assistant basketball coach Maxine Abeyta said she’s a “very quiet and humble young lady, which sets her apart from the rest.

“She creates a foundation for happy, healthy relationships, attracts the trust and respect Her 21.7 points per game and 12.3 rebounds in of others and is committed to her values and girls basketball helped lead her Lady Panthers goals. She’s the kind of person you want in squad to the state championship game for the your corner when the going gets tough. Her second time in three years. Even during the honesty and upbringing will take her far. She’s loss, Gonzales led her team with 18 points and a great student, athlete and person.” 14 rebounds Gonzales’ hard work has landed her While Peñasco failed to win its first-ever girls scholarship offers from multiple schools, basketball state title, Gonzales was a big part including some in the state. Right now, though, of helping her team garner over 30 wins in a she is still weighing her options and she says single season, including winning the Northern that her school of choice will most definitely Río Grande Tournament over Pecos — the come down to who offers the best future for 2019 state champions. her academically. Gonzales added to her basketball repertoire “Just being around my teammates for so long skills such as ball handling and passing after and just growing up around sports — because working with Montoya even before she was that’s what us small town kids do to stay busy hired on as Peñasco’s coach. It showed more — I feel very grateful,” Gonzales said. than ever in Gonzales’ senior season. She added: “I have to give credit to my She first picked up a basketball around teammates for helping me to push myself to the third grade when she played in small be better.” tournaments in Peñasco and Northern New Mexico. Her biggest inspiration for the sport, though, was her sister, Charlyna Gonzales. “My older sister is probably the reason why I joined cross-country and volleyball,” Carly Gonzales said. “She set the foundation for my sisters and me. … She’s kind of been my role model, and I try to follow in her footsteps.” In volleyball, too, Gonzales was the leading figure. She scored 316 points total through the course of one season, 215 of which were kills. During one November match against Escalante, Gonzales had the help of her teammates and went on to score all 15 points in the fifth and final set to seal the Lady Panthers’ victory. Carly Gonzales, Peñasco (senior)

But Gonzales’ ability to perform well in volleyball didn’t stem from growing up playing the sport — she started doing volleyball programs around the eighth grade — it came from working hard, always. That is something her sister instilled in her, Gonzales said.

By Matthew Narvaiz, Taos News

NOAH ARMIJO, A SENIOR AT TAOS HIGH School, and the Taos News’ Male Athlete of the Year, has been handling the pandemic like a lot of other sports fans across the globe — by watching “The Last Dance.”

Noah Armijo TAOS COUNTY ALL-STARS 2020 MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

It’s a documentary about Michael Jordan and the 1998 Chicago Bulls, giving a glimpse into one of the greatest basketball players of all time and his drive to be the best. “He was an animal,” Armijo said of Jordan and his work ethic. Armijo, in his own right, performed at a high level in both basketball and football in his final year of high school eligibility, much like the guy who won six championships in eight years with Chicago. Armijo led the Tigers in football to a 6-5 overall record and a state playoffs appearance at home against Silver a year after Taos won its first ever championship in the sport. Not many believed that Taos would win over half of its games and with a brand-new starting quarterback, head coach Art Abreu Jr. said, but Armijo was able to write off those doubters. Armijo didn’t start at Taos for quarterback until his final season, and the season before that he was mostly a rotational player. But he still found success. The lanky 6-4 senior threw for nearly 1,400 yards and nine touchdowns and he ran for seven more his junior year. He had big pass plays to other seniors, like Angel Limas, for 33-yard touchdowns on 4th-and-27. And he had flashy run plays, too, like his gamewinning bruiser against St. Pius X at Anaya Field for Taos’ first win in over 15 years against the Sartans. He was All-District in football his senior year. Armijo is a hard worker and that’s how he helped both the basketball and football team reach the state playoffs. In basketball, he averaged nearly a double-double for head coach Hernando Chavez at 10.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. But Armijo credits his hard work to those close to him like his father, Jim Armijo, and his stepmother, Wanda Lucero. My dad was always on my side,” Armijo said “He was on my side even when I wanted to quit during two-a-days.” Armijo’s dad even set up a camper on campus during two-a-days to let his son get rest in-between practice.

44

Noah Armijo, Taos (senior) MORGAN TIMMS/TAOS NEWS

Of his stepmother, Armijo said: “She has helped me with everything, whether it be driving me to practice at 5 a.m. or buying me equipment I need for sports. She also helped me with visualizing the game before I even played it, which I thought helped me [perform] better.” Armijo played basketball all of high school, but was a starter his final two seasons. During his senior season, though, Armijo nearly missed from February on with a meniscus tear but was able to come back in time for the district championship and state playoffs; he performed well in both games. “Noah is a big impact [player],” Chavez said. From a young age, Armijo was fond of the success of some of his favorite athletes such as Jason Witten, Steph Curry, David Ortiz and Jon Lester. So he stepped up to the plate when he needed to the most, just like those athletes did. He started baseball and basketball when he was 4, but “8 if you want to say competitively.” “Football, I got into it my third-grade year.” Armijo was saddened that he didn’t get to play baseball this season, and said it was his favorite sport to play. “That is the biggest sport for me,” Armijo said. “Just the feeling of the spring and playing baseball with my friends, I miss that.” Armijo, a left-handed pitcher, was to be Taos’ and head coach Miguel Quintana’s ace this season. Lester is a big inspiration for Armijo, and that’s part of why he chose the pitching route. “I wanted to be like Jon Lester,” Armijo said. “He’s the main reason for baseball. My brothers weren’t really into it.” Armijo’s inspiration doesn’t stop at his parents, though. It comes from his brothers and coaches, too. Like texts of support, and lots and lots of encouragement. “Coach Abreu, he didn’t help me with just football but other sports. He helped me get into a mindset of thinking like a champion, instead of being just mediocre.” Armijo, without a doubt, is above mediocrity — he’s a stellar athlete, student and leader.

Alex Waggoner

Armando Valerio

Taos (freshman)

Taos (senior)

You know sometimes when you see an athlete participating in his or her respective sport, and you can tell that they’re above most of their competition on the field most of the time? Well, that’s the feeling you quickly get when you watch Alex Waggoner, a freshman on the Taos varsity team, play soccer. Waggoner started all games in his freshman season, and he led the Tigers in scoring — by a large margin — with 40 goals. In eighth grade, when he was also on varsity, Waggoner led the team with 34 goals.

Armando Valerio led the Taos football team in rushing, even though he typically didn’t start. He finished the 2019 season with 1,289 yards and 15 touchdowns. If the offense was moving, it was most likely due to Valerio’s ability to find open holes, which then led to more passing opportunities for Armijo. He was named First Team All-District on both sides of the ball.

A

F

46

It’ll be likely that, next season, Waggoner will lead his team again in scoring, and the season after and then the season after that. Likely, in that scenario, Waggoner will be a future winner — and maybe soon — of Taos County Athlete of the Year. Players like Waggoner set themselves apart — and it’s for the high level of play he is in control of, the level that most athletes only dream of playing at.

B

More impressive, however, was Valerio’s third-place finish at the state wrestling tournament. He’d wrestled before, but not in a while — and for him to be as dominant as he was on the mat proved he was strong-willed even without a team behind him. C

Angel Limas

Taos (senior) Angel Limas, a senior at Taos High School this past school year, played both football and basketball — and did both extremely

well. In football, Limas led the Tigers in receiving with 782 yards and seven touchdowns this past season. It was Limas’ second season leading the Tigers in receiving, too. He was also a big cornerback, swatting away plenty of passes. For that, he was named First Team All-District. In basketball, Limas wasn’t afraid of getting his hands dirty, spending plenty of time in the post eking out rebounds or scoring in tough spots. He did the job not many wanted to do — but one that needed to be done.

Abdul Khweis D

Taos (junior) Without a doubt, Abdul Khweis was a dominant force on the basketball court for the Taos Tigers in the 2019-20 season. In fact, he was the most dominant force on the court for the Tigers. Leading the Tigers in scoring last season with 19.6 points per game, Khweis was the offense. On many occasions, he led fast breaks and scored in transition,

including during a game at Los Alamos that tied the game up and sent it to overtime — a game Taos went on to win.

those for Peñasco over the course of the season, and it helped with her assist, too, as she led the team averaging 4.9 per game.

He helped his team take home the District 5-2A championship at Española Valley, finding an open Isiah Jeantete on a nice assist for a last-second game winner.

Tafoya was named Second Team All-State and First Team All-District in basketball. And in volleyball, which she also excelled at, Tafoya was named to the All-District team as well. She had 229 assists and 302 points overall during the volleyball season.

While Khweis didn’t get to run during the track and field season because it was canceled, he was sure to do big things there, too.

Adrianna Tafoya E

Peñasco (senior) Adrianna Tafoya isn’t a demander of attention by any means, but she sure is a silent killer on the hardwood. She was the second leading scorer behind Carly Gonzales and she led the team in steals, averaging 4.4 a game. In fact, she was the biggest representation of Peñasco’s offense, which is to get down the court and score in transition. Her steals led to many of

F

Alyx Mastor

Taos (sophomore) Alyx Mastor truly is a master of longdistance running. Only a sophomore, Mastor finished the Class 4A State Cross-Country Championship in third place — her second third place in state in a row — with a time of 19:13.45. In a lot of her races, she finished in the top 10 — and in some, she took first like the Northern New Mexico Challenge. Mastor, who will be a junior next school year, may well end up winning first place in state in the near future.

Kiana Passino A

Questa (senior)

F

Kiana Passino, without a doubt, was a leader for the Questa girls basketball team. The senior helped lead the Lady Cats to the Class 2A state playoffs and an above .500 record, the first time in more than a decade. She was named to the Second Team AllDistrict in basketball. Passino also played volleyball.

Ariana MacAuley B

Peñasco (senior)

G

Ariana MacAuley, a senior, has a dominant serve in volleyball. So dominant that, usually, it ends up hitting the floor on the opposing side for a point. She had 228 kills total last season and ended up with 283 points. But MacAuley also played the perfect inside duo with Gonzales during the basketball season, acting as the other tall, lanky forward. She averaged 6.5 rebounds per game and was the

48

fourth leading scorer for Peñasco last season. She was named to the All-District teams in both volleyball and football.

AnnaLiz Duran C

Taos (senior) A first-place medal was on the mind of senior AnnaLiz Duran her senior season, the same season that girls wrestling was finally recognized officially by the NMAA. Instead, she finished in fifth place in the girls 106-pound division. But that didn’t matter much. Throughout the season, Duran had lost just once to a girl; that same girl went on to win it all. Duran also faced a handful of boys and, almost always, held her own.

Isaiah Padilla D

Peñasco (senior) If you needed a 3-point basket and you were on the Peñasco boys basketball team, Isaiah Padilla was sure to get

you one. Besides handling point guard duties, Padilla, a senior, had a smooth shot and a quick first step — and he was a big reason why the Panthers were able to win at least a few games.

Jordan Cisneros

Montaño was named Second Team All-District in football.

Taos (senior)

In one instance, Padilla had hit two-first half 3-pointers on his way to scoring 23 points in a homecoming victory in January over Cimarrón.

Santiago Salazar

Taos (senior) Dominic Montaño was only able to play in three baseball games his senior season before the pandemic put a halt to spring sports. But Montaño was going to be a big part of the offense for the Taos baseball team. Indeed, Montaño was a big part of the Tigers football offense, where he started as fullback. In that position, Montaño was a big run and pass blocker — and he did it well. He also was able to score three different times throughout the

Taos (senior) Santiago Salazar played center and linebacker for the Taos Tigers during the 2019 season, his final one before he graduates. On offense, Salazar, without a doubt, was a vocal leader for the offensive line, guiding his teammates on who to block. On defense, Salazar made it hard for teams to drive the ball down the middle of the field. He was a solid tackler — perhaps Taos’ best all season long. Salazar was named First Team All-District on both sides of the ball, and he was named Second Team All-State.

Jordan Cisneros, a senior who played on the Taos hockey team and who also played baseball for Taos, is an athlete as humble and respectful as they come. On the ice, though, he is a terror to other teams, gliding up and down the ice with relative ease. When you watch him play hockey, you right away can distinguish him from the rest. When it came to baseball, Cisneros was able to notch three runs in a game against Silver on Feb. 28, including an inside-the-park home run before the pandemic put a halt to the spring sports season.

Top 7 Sports Moments Armando Valerio takes third place at 152 pounds at state wrestling championships
Armando Valerio knows what it is like to have extreme highs and lows. But for his senior year, it was all highs — at least when it came to sports. While Valerio was a main piece in Taos’ football success, it was his third-place finishing in the 152 pound division at the NMAA State Wrestling Championships that was most memorable. He defeated Dallin Mangelson of Kirtland Central by way of pin — and in under a minute — for the third-place medal. MORGAN TIMMS / TAOS NEWS

TAOS COUNTY ALL-STARS 2020 Isaiah Jeantete hits buzzer beater for district championship After Taos had defeated Española Valley in late February for the District 2-4A basketball championship, junior Abdul Khweis said that what had transpired on the court just moments before was a Jordan-Kerr moment — that famous moment in which Jordan found an open Kerr for the game winner. Khweis, with seconds on the clock, had the ball in his hands before passing it to the

Senior Noah Armijo, Taos’ starting quarterback during the 2019 season, managed to score a touchdown in the final moments of a home game between Taos and St. Pius X. In the end, the Tigers went on to defeat the Sartans 21-19 , the first time in more than 15 years that the Taos had defeated them. While the Taos News was unable to find all the old football records, some sports fans in town believe that this is the first time Taos has ever defeated St. Pius X. In that instance, Peñasco met Mescalero Apache in the championship game in an empty Pit arena. It made for a memorable game not because of the action, but because of how it went down. Twenty years down the line, players from both teams will be sure to remember this game with no fans.

It’s crazy to think that Alyx Mastor is just a sophomore, but

to score all 15 points in the fifth and final set for Peñasco. Meanwhile, Escalante was unable to score the entire frame.

She was able to notch a time of 19:13.45, which was better than her third place time of 19:17.50 a season ago.

Carly Gonzales scores last 15 points to win final set against Escalante

The coronavirus pandemic started to have an effect on the general public at the same time that the New Mexico State Basketball Championships were happening. In fact, the final few days of the tournament — including the championship game — were closed off to fans and spectators, and only limited media was allowed.

Carly Gonzales and Peñasco came down to the wire in a match with Escalante on Nov. 6, but the Lady Panthers held strong. While it was a team effort by all means, Gonzales was in fact the volleyball player

Escalante, throughout the 2019-20 season, had the reputation of being a physical team –– and sometimes that physicality could turn into injury, like it did for Peñasco’s Jennifer Aguilar. But in this instance, on Feb. 26, the Questa Lady Cats were the ones to bring the pain to the Lady Bears, as they went on to win 60-52. It was the first time during the season that Questa had defeated Escalante and, to make it even sweeter, the victory propelled Questa into the District 5-2A championship game against Peñasco.
