BEST PLACE TO SATISFY YOUR SWEET TOOTH? TAOS COW.

your town, your vote

Best of Taos is not political-style voting. It's really not the least bit scientific or predictive. In this poll of Taoseños, frequent visitors and ex-pats, we seek to find out what service providers, food, watering holes, galleries, retailers (and many other categories) you like best. The votes aren't bought. There are no chards to inspect. No court or other state gets involved. No lines. No I.D. required. No protestors. No super PACs. The Taos News employees do not vote or factor into the results in any way whatsoever. Over the last 19 years, the Best of Taos has remained just a straight-up count; the most votes win. And can we just say,“Wow?”This year’s survey was the highest participation rate we’ve ever had to date tallying 2,787 responses. Many thanks to everyone who participated. Thanks also goes out to those of you who responded to our essay questions, which are always good for a laugh, debate or sometimes just trigger a contemplating chin scratch. Opinions are just that and don't always reflect everyone's choices, but we feel this is the fairest system. Back in 1998, when the Best of Taos issue was born, surveys were filled out on paper ballots, stuffed into garbage bags and tossed into the editor's office. Since 2012, we've put the survey online so readers can directly respond making the process much smoother, plus the editor isn't found drowning in paper mumbling something about blurry vision and paper cuts. From all of us at The Taos News, a hearty congratulations to the winners. Look for Best of Taos banners peppered throughout town.

Unlike the stuffy, upper-crust restaurants on the East Coast, Lambert's has been an exercise in detailed simplicity and elegance for about 28 years. Located on Bent Street near Taos Plaza, Lambert's sees a steady flow of visitor's and locals alike. Those who know, try Lambert's cheese steak with green chile at lunch or grilled duck breast on the dinner menu with a distinct variety of other options spearheaded by Executive Chef James Crowther III. Everything is made from scratch, even the ketchup. Lambert's is a New York Citycaliber restaurant minus the NYC.

The better-than-your-typical-bar menu includes wood-fired pizza, killer wings and an eclectic cellar list. At Lambert's of Taos, waitstaff aren't just trained to be attentive, they are trained to hear a need before a customer even expresses it, such as a dropped fork. It's no surprise that Lambert's of Taos has earned first place for Best Waitstaff for the sixth time. Attention to detail is the lauded restaurant's motto from the kitchen to the dining area. It is evident in not only the waitstaff's heightened attention and response, but in the specific placement of place settings to the meticulously folded cloth napkins.

AN OFFERING AT GUTIZ,TAOS’ FAVORITE PLACE FOR WEEKEND BRUNCH

best breakfast TAOS DINER

908 PASEO DEL PUEBLO NORTE (575) 758-2374 TAOSDINER.COM

Taos Diner consistently places high in this annual survey of the best place to get breakfast. The Charles Breakfast Burrito, The Cooper John and the homemade corned beef hash are just a few of the mouth-watering reasons the firstplace vote is true. The “Diner” is no secret to locals — or what many like to call “the Diner in-crowd” — when it comes to morning fare. Organic coffee and gluten-free red and green sauces are also offered in this unpretentious and comfortable place to start the day.

Brunch at Gutiz has garnered best brunch accolades for three years running — serving handmade chocolate truffles by Jennifer Loves Chocolate and locally blended organic artisan teas by Tea-O-Graphy may have something to do with that streak. The menu at Gutiz fuses Latin-French cuisine such as the Parisian Crepe, but doesn't leave out Northern New Mexico staples by adding green chile to their Brie Omelette. Tapas, salads, a children's menu and specialties of the house — like the gluten-free Paella Valencia and Taoseño Rice baked in a terra-cotta bowl — round out the unique offerings. The atmosphere in this wellregarded café is often described as “serene” and “pleasant.”

In 1945, Abe inherited the tavern license from his uncle upon returning from World War II. Nowadays, Abe's daughters run the tavern and store. WORLD CUP CAFÉ OFFERS BEST BREWS AND ALT VIEWS THE BEST CUPPA JOE IN TAOS,ACCORDING TO SURVEY VOTES, IS WORLD CUP ON TAOS PLAZA. 10

BEST OF TAOS taosnews.com/best-of-taos

A

ll the world is a stage and Taoseños have front row seats at World Cup Café, located in the heart of downtown on the northwest corner of the Taos Plaza intersection, 102 Paseo del Pueblo Norte.

World Cup’s clientele are first and foremost coffee and tea aficionados. That these great brews come with outstanding people-watching and “attitude” just adds more to the killer cuppas and snacks served up here from dawn til dusk, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week. Partners Patrick Larkin and Andrea Meyer (Love Apple’s chef/menu wizard) own World Cup. Founder Larkin says the “world” part of World Cup is a statement about the huge diversity of the world’s peoples, and incidentally about the world-class caliber of their fare. He’s pretty clear on the reasons people voted World Cup No. 1 in the 2017 Best of Taos survey. “It’s my fantastic employees who work to supply superior coffee and service to the customers. And of course all the people who have supported us over the past 25 years,” he said, adding, “We’re totally organic and all our baked goods are made locally with 100 percent organic ingredients.” Their cheeses come from local cheesemakers Chris and Elena Pieper of Mud ’n’ Flood; their organic pastries, cookies and galettes come from Lauryn Romero’s Sweet Sol; milk and crema are by Organic Valley. They’ve switched plant milks and now offer hemp milk only. What with all the allergies these days, this makes simple what can get very complex in the soy/gluten/vegan, and more, dietary dilemmas. “Mainly, our thing is to do a great job at what we do and serve all comers.” They could charge and profit more, he said, but they firmly believe their pricing is the only socially responsible way to do things in this world. With online reviewers, Americano espresso is the mostmentioned, with and without crema; the Mocha Mexicana and Mocha Borgia are close seconds; and the chocolate and creamy lattés an even third. “It was the most delicious cup of espresso that I have ever had,” said one TripAdvisor reviewer. “They serve Gavino’s in a nice porcelain demitasse cup that they gently warmed beforehand. The crema on top was perfect.” The staff are equally perfect, according to more than 90 percent of the reviews. Barista Marianne Fahrney has been with them for 10 years, including time off to birth and raise two babies. Fahrney’s husband/baker/chef and woodworker Chris White supplies The Good Loaf — nutrient dense, Taosyeast bread that World Cup offers as toast, with or without slatherings of jam. Get there early if you want toast with your cup. Oh, and cash or check only. “The very best in the West!” opined a Denverite online. “Love this place. You call it, they make it. Deeply aromatic, delectable, every drop is like gold. Their espressos are like the ones we ordered in Italy every morning. It’s mostly a locals thing, never seen a tourist in here although it’s just at the corner of Paseo and the entrance to the Plaza. There’s usually a place to park out front for the dash and grab, or a place to enjoy your brew inside or out if you’re on a bike or walking. Check out the very cool bumper stickers — au courant, usually funny, and sometimes, a little too on point (ouch!). Worth every penny!” Ah yup, attitude with every cup! For more, call (575) 737-5299.

WE ASKED BY staci matlock

LOVIN’ IT UPTAOS STYLE

‘Where’s the best place in Taos to romance your gal/guy?’ In Taos, the favorite place to woo a partner is the aptly named The Love Apple, a Taos restaurant devoted to local, homegrown cooking. It’s housed in a former Catholic chapel. Maybe it’s something about the building’s historic aura that gives people faith they’ll find romance after a meal there.

12

Ojo Caliente Hot Springs and the magical mountains around Taos tied for second as favorite places to love it up. Several readers pegged the hot tubs in their backyards as fine places to warm things up with a partner. Others liked KTAOS Solar Center as a hot spot for lovers.

BEST OF TAOS taosnews.com/best-of-taos

One apparently frequent romancer wrote it was “hard to pick just one.” Another said their favorite spot was “between the river bed of the Río Grande and the top of Wheeler Peak.” Dancing was the choice of several voters. Either “anywhere Jimmy Stadler is playing,” or “Michael Hearne’s Big Barn dance”

or anywhere a couple can sashay on the dance floor as a precursor to a little tango elsewhere. A few people with apparently limited romantic experience chose the Walmart parking lot as their favorite spot. One nostalgic voter wrote,“I WISH I were still

that young.” Hey, take it from our favorite Dr. Ruth, who’s written whole books about romance and passion after age 50. You are never too old for romance, or a little love.

But the biggest topic of conversation in the last several months is — no shocker here — the election of a brash, Twitter-loving, billionaire businessman with no government experience to lead the United States as president. Donald Trump shocked the world, a lot of pollsters and maybe even himself when he won the

Tied for second place was debate over a four-story hotel and expansion of the Taos airport. A move by the town of Taos to create a hotel overlay zone in the south end of town, and then consider a height variance to allow a hotel up to 48-feet tall, split residents. Some support the hotel as a much needed enterprise

to provide more places for visitors to stay. Others say such a building will set a precedent and ruin the town’s uniqueness. A project to extend the airport runway has caused similar divisions. It’s all part of “the ongoing debate on allowing new commercial development or keeping Taos ‘the same,’” wrote one voter. Several people voted for the performance by Alabama Shakes, one

of the biggest musical appearances to date in Taos. Readers also mentioned immigration, drugs and a broken well that left Questa residents without water for three weeks. Suicides of youth at the Gorge bridge and the disappearance of longtime Taos Center for the Arts director Holly White also were among the hard topics people discussed a lot, according to readers.

Yes, there was the requisite mention of the Taos hum and chem trails, though one reader thought they might be “com or con trails in the sky.” One person thought “$6 foot-longs at Subway” was worth a mention.

PETREE’S HAS BIGGEST SELECTION, IS LOCALLY GROWN

I

t’s springtime in the Rockies and the people have spoken – Petree’s Nursery & Greenhouses are the Best Garden and Nursery Center in 2017’s Best of Taos survey.

And really, that choice is a no-brainer. Where else can you get all your perennials and annuals grown right here in Taos, and at the lowest prices going? Not to mention lowpriced soil amendments and other nutrients. Sure, people have been known to buy out of town, say online or as a promotion for a garden club, but as the Best of Taos survey itself shows, people who care about keeping Taos “green” picked Petree’s for best prices and selection, thus keeping money in the community, supporting local jobs and reducing the carbon footprint of hauling goods across state lines. Things get even greener when you use the Petree’s Green Card, which gives an additional 10 percent off your purchase; or the same amount can be donated to one of five local nonprofits – Community Against Violence, DreamTree Youth program, Habitat for Humanity, Taos Mens Shelter or New Mexico Wildlife Center in Española. Back To Earth cotton burr compost is generally $7.99 a bag around town, Petree’s is only $6.97 with the Green Card discount. Annuals and perennials in town are about $4.50-$4.80 per six pack, but Petree’s are $3.55 with the 10 percent discount and $3.35 each when you buy six or more. So what sparked this price shift? Volume and growing their own, says co-owner Sylvia Petree. “The volume is way, way up this year, that’s why,” that and Mike Petree’s decision to simply lower the prices to be the most affordable around. “And, we are now growing for another community in Los Alamos.” Last year, they grew 1,200 flower baskets, this year they did 1,700; this year they doubled their annual and perennial production over last season. They also supply all of the town of Taos landscaping – all the trees, shrubs and soils, except for the 100 flower baskets seen hanging on town light posts the past few years.

flowers, trees and shrubs, VOTERS CHOSE PETREE'S AS THE BEST GARDEN AND NURSERY CENTER.

“We just didn’t have room for another 100 baskets,” she said, which is why they came from out of town, and at significantly higher prices – some $10 to $15 higher in price than Petree’s baskets, not to mention the fuel used getting them here. Happy Frog Soil Conditioner is the next best thing to heaven on Earth, according to Sylvia and Petree’s staff, and as of press time, it’s $24.50 per 3-cubic-foot bag with the Petree Green Card. Happy Frog says, “Don’t Treat Your Soil Like Dirt!®” and Petree customers apparently agree. Every bag has finely screened, pH-balanced, aged forest nutrients, earthworm castings and bat guano, plus a bazillion beneficial microbes stimulating root development to help plants access nutrients in the soil, reducing the need for heavy, expensive inputs of nitrogen fertilizers. Such soil conditioners stimulate symbiotic and free-living nitrogen-fixing bacteria (also fixing atmospheric nitrogen!) supplying, in many cases, up to 75 percent of a crop’s needs. What a great time to be a gardener. Keep an eye out for Petree’s full-page ad in Tempo for week-toweek specials, I missed their April special on Back To Earth for $6.30 per bag. For more info, visit them at 25 Petree St., 1.5 miles north of Lower Ranchitos on Blueberry Hill. Call (575) 758-3021 or go to their website petreenursery.com.

IN TAOS,

‘going to Pieces’

IS A GOOD THING

BY m. elwell romancito

T

he minute you walk in the door you are met with the promise of treasures everywhere. The large rooms are chock-full of items, spectacular or humble, of use for your home, your whimsey or simply because you’ve been looking for “one of those” for years, and there it is. Pieces is a consignment shop that offers a stunning array of clothing for women, men and children. There is also sporting goods, furniture and household items, artwork, jewelry, tools, pottery, rugs, artwork, collectibles and oneof-a-kind items. Pieces has been in business since 2006. They have more than 6,000 “consigners.” There is the main store on Paseo del Pueblo Sur, and also a shop on Paseo del Cañon. That makes for 20,000 square feet of retail space. All of it is neatly sorted and arranged so you can find what you’re looking for with ease. We spoke with owner Becky Holsinger and asked what is her favorite thing about running a consignment shop. “I love what I do. I love the people and the stuff. There is also the idea that we’re helping all the way around. Anybody that needs money can bring stuff in, get money or get store credit to get more stuff. Some people use the money they make with their consignment items to make donations. Others use it to pay their light bills, buy food or get gas. We’re also keeping things out of the landfill. People who shop are getting cool stuff,” Holsinger said. “We have things from just a couple of dollars to items that are worth thousands of dollars,” she added. Another thing that sets Pieces apart is how Holsinger listens to the needs of the community. “We do listen to what is needed and we focus on taking on those items, and less on items that may not move as well or be as needed,” she said. “I do about one-third clothing, another third is furniture and the rest is all the miscellaneous stuff,” she said. “Taos is kind of a difficult place for shoppers. There aren’t a lot of options for buying things at reasonable prices.” Holsinger also has advice for people looking to sell items on consignment at Pieces “I always suggest people should come in and familiarize themselves with the store — see what kinds of things we have, and how we have them priced. We can look up prices on things, but if you are concerned about what something might be worth, you should do a little research online to find out items like yours are selling for,” Holsinger said. Pieces main shop at 1024 Paseo del Pueblo Sur is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and is also open Sundays 11 a.m.-5 p.m. (575) 737-0500 More Pieces, located at 216 Paseo del Cañon, is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m -6 p.m. Inventory at that store includes sporting goods, children’s clothing, office furniture, and garden and salvaged construction materials. WE ASKED BY staci matlock

ALL IN JEST

‘Who should be voted off the ‘island’ we call Taos?’ This year, we decided to hold our own version of “Survivor” and see who Taoseños thought should be sent packing. Topping out in first place was Jeff Northrup, a passionately opinionated gentleman who is known for putting up neoncolored signs along Paseo del Pueblo Sur replete with his strong political views. His signs have engendered admiration and anger. In a dead heat for second place were Taos town manager Rick Bellis, town councilwoman Judy Cantu 28

and President Donald “#Twitterking”Trump. Other readers had some fun suggestions for who else should be voted off the “Taos island.” One wrote in,“Tourists who drive worse than we do.” A couple suggested “billionaires.”“Those who expect Taos to be like the place they left,” wrote in one person. And at least two readers wanted to vote off “whomever thought of this lame question.” (We’ll never give him up.) A few suggested voting out the CAVE people, or

Citizens Against Virtually Everything — an affectionate name for those residents who seem to vote against every suggested commercial development. Another reader wanted to vote “all mean Liberals” off the Taos island. In a few past issues, this question has been posed in some way, shape or form and is all in jest. It should not be taken seriously or literally. That being said, a few readers were offended by our question, finding it very un-Taos like.

“Everyone should be welcomed,” wrote one. “This is too mean to answer,” wrote another. Several others said no one should be voted off. “One of the best things about Taos is the respect we have for diversity and individual beliefs,” wrote in one voter. “No one, we’re the metaphysical Island of Mis-fit Toys,” wrote another.

THE FOOD STANDS ALONE Food trucks, food carts, food stands — however you refer to the unassuming, yet delectable food outlets — were popular in Taos before they became trendy in larger cities across the country. And way before the term “taco trucks on every corner” became an anti-immigration meme. The majority of “Taco trucks” around here tend to be more traditional. The recipes are often passed down through generations. But not all food stands here are of the Mexican/New Mexican variety. They also tend to be stationary, being more like mini restaurants on wheels but don’t move from spot to spot. Good prices, good food and ample portions are the main reasons why locals can be seen getting a breakfast burrito at a stand before work and Thai noodles at another stand for lunch. It’s the local thing to do.

We love us some live music in Taos and on the way to the Gorge, out in mesa land, is our favorite place to see local and national performers who grace the indoor and two outdoor stages — including an amphitheater — with plenty of room to shake, rattle and roll most nights of the week. A converted airplane hangar houses the indoor stage fitted with “acoustic purity.” Add to the experience great food and excellent handcrafted, in-house brewed beers — cheers to a fun night out.

Morning drive host Patrick McCarty, better known around these parts as “Paddy Mac,” has regularly won this category since he came to Taos in 2000. In last year's Best of Taos publication, Mac described his DJ style and mission: “The individualism of radio stations is pretty rare these days. I took a [cross-country drive] a few years ago. I was like, 'This station sounds just like that station.' ... When I'm driving, I seek out these tiny little individual stations, and I want to hear the voice of that town. ... I'm going to be as local and personal and as informational in this town as I can be.” And you are, Paddy.

BARBARA’S TOUCH

CASA BENAVIDES IS ‘A FAMILY BUSINESS IN THE TRUEST SENSE’ BY andy dennison

KATHARINE EGLI

BARBARA MCCARTHY WAS A DANCER IN HER YOUTH. THIS PHOTO OF HER HANGS IN THE CASA BENAVIDES DINING ROOM.

I

t’s steeped in the history of Taos and two of its prominent families. The reception area bears the look and feel of a Spanish Colonial cathedral. Downtown Taos is right outside the front door, and the “killer breakfast” is one reason why many keep returning year after year. Put these all together and you’ve got the top bed and breakfast in Taos, Casa Benavides, voted in for yet another Best of Taos accolade in 2017. “It’s a family business in the truest sense,” said owner Tom McCarthy when contacted about winning The Taos News annual survey. You can’t get much more family than Casa Benavides. McCarthy grew up right down Kit Carson Road, and his wife, the late Barbara Benavides McCarthy, was raised next door to the future B&B. What was to become Casa Benavides was, at various times, a welfare office, rehab center and private residence. “Barbara would tell stories to our visitors about Mabel Dodge Luhan, Georgia O’Keeffe and those awful McCarthy boys,” he said with a laugh. “She would throw snowballs and apples at me, and she got a lot of mileage out of those stories.” As they got older, Tom and Barbara became high school sweethearts before marrying and having three kids. Each went into education — Barbara taught physical education and Tom coached the state champ basketball team — but they always had an eye on getting into business. “We both had a passion for doing things,” McCarthy said. Restless, the couple bought into the McCarthy family retail business on Taos Plaza, El Mercado, and then a couple more. In 1989, Barbara got an itch to own the former Lewis Art Gallery on Kit Carson Road along with adjacent properties. To finance the purchase, the McCarthys started Casa Benavides with seven rooms. Location, location, location has always made Casa Benavides

44

BEST OF TAOS taosnews.com/best-of-taos

popular: “You just put your keys in the room and leave your car in the parking space,” said McCarthy. At a “bed and breakfast,” the second half of the name is as important as the first. To that end, Casa Benavides prides itself in cooking up a “killer” first meal of the day. Every breakfast is freshly prepared and features the secret recipe “Barbara’s Drop Dead Granola,” egg frittata with the awardwinning red chile sauce, a variety of homemade muffins, fruit, yogurt and juices. Loyal customers come back again and again, he said, from Colorado, Texas, Mexico and Albuquerque. Easily half are returnees, he said, coming for the cooler weather in the summer, the skiing in the winter or just a break from the hustle and bustle. And now, as the Taos music scene flourishes, McCarthy sees more music aficionados staying at the B&B and walking to Kit Carson Park for a concert. Barbara’s touch is all over Casa Benavides. Early on, she traveled in Mexico as a buyer and had a passion for the Southwestern style. So it makes sense that the reception area has high ceilings, stout vigas and walls full of Southwestern artwork. In the 38 rooms that spread across 2 acres and seven buildings, the Southwestern/Taos motif extends. Rooms bear names such as Anasazi, Azteca, Jemez and Guadalajara as a nod to Mexico and New Mexico; Blue Lady, Trapper and Frontier to honor El Norte; and John’s to honor Tom’s father. “Barbara designed everything, she had a true touch for design, and I hung onto her coattails for her whole life,” McCarthy said with his usual humility. There’s a remodel going on, and the McCarthy kids are becoming more and more involved in the business. But little will change to make Casa Benavides anything different than it has for nearly three decades. “It feels like a home here, and that will always be the say it is,” McCarthy said.

Centinel Bank was started by the Romero family more than 40 years ago. Unlike its larger national counterparts, this community lending institution operates on a kind of closed system, lending only to borrowers in their respective counties. That, and the fact that Centinel Bank is completely local, are a couple of reasons why it is awarded “Best Bank” by the people of Taos County.

There's a saying around here that you can tell a true Taoseño by the amount of dried mud on their vehicle and/or shoes. Scrapping gunk off your hiking boots is your job, but if your car or truck is looking a little grungy or has just a little too much dog hair and stink inside, the consensus of survey voters is to take it to 4 Seasons. SALON MARJORIE

An oasis of calm

BY m. elwell romancito

A

hair salon is more than just a place where people go to get their hair cut or styled. It is an oasis of pampering and a rare opportunity to tune out a hectic schedule. Salon Marjorie at the foot of Ledoux Street is just such an oasis.

Marjorie Olsen opened her salon in 1996 and built its reputation by teaching her staff the French haircutting techniques from Jacques Dessange of Paris, where she studied when she worked with Carsten Wilms of Carsten Institute in Phoenix, Arizona, for 8 years. “Taking care of the clients is what makes a salon good or not,” Olsen said. “As artists, we celebrate the beauty of the individual. We share our creativity, talents, skill and enthusiasm in helping the client look as good as they can. We also like to learn about the client and what they need. We find out what their wants and desires are.”

helping her clients and staff to continually grow. Olsen’s photography — images used on the website (salonmarjorie. com) and for advertising — is part of the artistic endeavors that she enjoys. The salon employs a University of New Mexico and Avedatrained licensed integrative massage therapist for a wide variety of techniques used for a massage session tailored to the individual needs of the client. Deep tissue, Swedish, myofascial, sports, medical, trigger-point, stretching, and aromatherapy are some of the styles that can be integrated into sessions.

Personally, Olsen is an artist, photographe, and amateur chef. This like of “life as art” mission in life has made the salon what it is. Salon Marjorie is the place to inspire you to look and feel as good as you can. The environment is healing, soothing and relaxing, and the energetic staff helps you stop, find an oasis of calm and take care of yourself. The salon is located on Ledoux Street. They’re open from Tuesday to Saturday, 9 a.m -5 p.m. Call (575) 751-7246 or email salonmarjorie@hotmail.com for an appointment.

Olsen also pointed out how, at the end of all that, it’s difficult not to establish a personal relationship with the client. That relationship includes discovering changes they might or might not be comfortable with such as cuts or color. “It’s not for everyone to want to do something bold, but it is fun to change,” she said, adding that’s just fine if you don’t want to change things up. There’s no pressure. Salon Marjorie is also an Aveda Salon, a designation meant to keep salon quality high. Aveda is a company that produces high quality, botanically based beauty products, such as hair products, skincare, and makeup. The company partners with hundreds of salons that sell and use Aveda products exclusively. Services at the salon include hair, massage and bodywork, along with skincare, waxing, and tinting. “I do have an aesthetician here. She’s wonderful. Skincare is a big part of the whole transformation process,” Olsen said. Salon Marjorie has received the “Best of Taos” award for hairstyling before and has been voted into the top slot many times. She said education is an important part of developing new techniques, which keeps Olsen inspired and committed to

WE ASKED BY staci matlock

EVERYWHERE WE LOOK

‘Where do you find Taos magic?’ Taoseños might agree with Vincent Van Gogh when he said, “Everywhere we look, complex magic of nature blazes before our eyes.” Readers picked the mountains first and the Rio Grande Gorge a close second for where they find magic here. Taos County is blessed with a rich diversity of landscape; wild and a bit unruly like many of its residents. Those 50

landscapes are where people go to seek beauty and respite for the soul. “What could be more magical than the natural beauty that surrounds all of Taos,” wrote one reader. Other readers found magic “in every rainbow,” “on any hiking trail” and “in every sunset.” Many among the 938 who cast votes, chose Taos Pueblo as a magical

BEST OF TAOS taosnews.com/best-of-taos

place. Still others said magic was in their backyard or at the Plaza. Some found magic “dancing at Old Martina’s Hall” or “The Burger Stand at Taos Ale House” and “The Alley Cantina.” (We suspect a few beers were downed before that last vote.) And one voter found magic “in green chile, and in the faces and love of people who live here.”

Indeed, we are all lucky to live in such a magical place. It is the land, people and cultures that have made it so.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH for choosing us

Best of Taos, 2017. We are honored.

usiness, community and life all intertwine for Wanda Lucero and the State Farm insurance agency she has run for the past 15 years. Because of this, the Wanda Lucero Insurance Agency at 211 Kit Carson Road has been named Best of Taos 2017 — marking the eighth year in a row that she has been voted the top insurance agency in Taos County. “My occupation is my avocation,” said Lucero, who began in the insurance business 34 years ago. “I love what I do because I get to help others.” Lucero likes people and she loves to listen to their stories: “In the insurance business, where you are providing peace of mind, it’s important to learn who people are, what motivates them, what the important issues in their lives are.” Getting her business up and running meant Lucero believed that she just didn’t have “time for downtime.” But a speaker at a financial advisor conference several years convinced her otherwise, saying that “feeding your mind, body and soul” will make you a better businesswoman.

Because of this example, Lucero now understands that in order to lead a successful business, you have to take care of yourself and your community. By setting aside time for those “outside” elements

Raton Bypass/ Gusdorf Road License # 61030

758-3027 rmdraper@laplaza.org of her life, she sees that she has become a better insurance agent. A Taos native, Lucero said she was born with a core belief to fight for the underdog and to fill her life with the things that were important to her. That belief comes from her parents, who were a deep influence in her life. Her father built his own contracting business, and would have worked seven days a week were it not for his devotion to his religion. “We were brought up Seventh Day Adventists, meaning from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday, you didn’t work, watch television or entertain,” she said. “It was forced time off for my father. Watching my father’s commitment to both work and religion had a strong effect on me.” So, following her father’s example, Lucero reached out beyond her insurance office and into her community to help others. Here are some of the fruits of that commitment: Lucero purchases 600 copies of The Taos News each week and distributes them to senior citizens at the Ancianos centers in Taos County and the Eagle Nest Senior Center. She also supports free newspapers at the weekly Taos Plaza Live performance. She buys ad space in The Taos News for the Athlete of the Week, and supports all of the athletic teams at

Taos High School. Both the Rotary Chile Challenge and the Lions Club Golf Tournament benefit from Lucero’s financial support. Her work at T.E.N. (Taos Enterprise Network) supports entrepreneurism in her hometown, and as a board member of the Taos Community Foundation, she advocates for funding to improve education, health and affordable housing in Taos. Her work on the board of the Integrative Medicine de Taos conference aims to raise awareness and access to both traditional and nontraditional health care.
