Welcome from the Taos County Association of REALTORS®
¡BIENVENIDOS!
Enchanted Homes Magazine has been the place to see homes and land for sale in the Enchanted Circle for the past 22 years. Our communities include Red River, Questa, Angel Fire, Eagle Nest, Valle Escondido, Taos and Taos Ski Valley — all known for pristine air, mountain views, bright blue skies, stunning sunsets and lots of open spaces. Skiing, snowboarding, fly fishing, golf, hiking, mountain biking and rafting are icing on the cake. Artists and writers have been drawn to the area for centuries for its natural beauty, diversity and rich history. Some say it’s magical. To some, spiritual. To some, an outdoor Mecca. To the members of the Taos County Association of REALTORS®, it’s home. The natural beauty and gentle climate of this place make outdoor living attractive and inviting. With thousands of acres of public lands, low humidity, and spectacular views everywhere, you can be outside in comfort whether you’re enjoying the view from a raft down the river, a volcanic rim hiking trail, or a hot air balloon over the Rio Grande Gorge. Pack a picnic lunch for a hike on a forest trail, fish one of our many trout streams, or strap on your skis and hit the mountains or the trails. Enjoy it any way you choose. The glowing autumn colors fade with shorter days as the turbulent winds send leaves tumbling down the streets, and the first snowflakes of the season begin to fall. We pause to watch the heavy clouds cover the mountains that surround us, wishing for feet and feet of snow to start our ski season. Family gatherings for Thanksgiving are happily anticipated, with all their rich aromas, tangy with piñon smoke, pumpkin pies, and that amazing chili over homemade tamales. Friends gather for holiday cheer at the Bonfires on Bent, the Lighting of Ledoux, and the Kit Carson Art Walk. The Taos Pueblo on Christmas Eve hosts an event so beautiful and special no one should miss it. Gatherings of loved ones traveling from near or far to our mountain hamlet make memories that will endure through the generations. The Enchanted Circle communities light up for the holidays and New Year, and it is so good to see everyone. Whether your family gathering is large or small this season, we wish you the very happiest homecoming this Holiday Season.

REALTOR PROFILE
MEET
Montee Sue Miller ANGEL FIRE’S REALTOR ANGEL WRITTEN BY JOSEPHINE ASHTON
have called the glow of the sun on the mountain “fire of the gods.” The paradise that Miller calls home had just begun to emerge by the time Montee Sue and Marshall — Oklahomans, now with 53 years together —were married. In the mid-1950s, the Texas family of Roy LeBus and his brother G.F., having acquired some 25,000 acres on the mountain (Monte Verde Ranch, and the Cieneguilla Tract), would become operators of one of the largest cattle ranches in New Mexico. Then, between mid-century to mid-1960s, they would work collaboratively with Jim Woods, creator of the Sandia Tram, Ernie Blake from Taos Ski Valley, and Red River’s Don Carmichael, creating their vision of Vail, becoming the developers of the resort to be called Angel Fire. While the resort area has seen many owner/management changes, the village offers award-winning, family-friendly ski slopes, a golf course, fishing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, bird and wild animal watching and world-class chamber music. And of course, lodging, shopping and dining. It also offers homes, both for the vacationer, and the live-here homeowner. While Angel Fire may not resemble the “forever homes” of old-time small towns, many have stayed. For those who have a need to move on, or who see the sparkle of gold in the investment opportunities, Montee Sue Miller’s lifelong experience has been a boon. Her ability to create great re-sales profiting out-going sellers, or assisting a homeowner or former client to buy up or consider other property investment opportunities has resulted in clients who both knew the “Angel Realtor of Angel Fire” could deliver, and who became friends. n 2001, Montee Sue Miller bought a vacation home in Angel Fire, New Mexico. Then, she stayed. Today, with nearly 20 years experience as a Remax Resort and Second Home Specialist and over 40 years buying and selling investment properties, she has not only made Angel Fire her home but helped dozens of others do the same. The sign over her desk reads, “Just Another Day in Paradise.” She graciously excels as she lives this motto and guides others through the many important details of investing in Angel Fire. Although Angel Fire is a relatively new village and resort area, it has a long history. According to an article by Kathy Alexanders on the Legends of America website, the Moache Utes and Apaches gathered on the mountain and in the valleys, and the Ute are said to
“Our selling season has been incredible these past three years,” Montee Sue said. She further explained that she had tried to retire, with more than 15 realtor awards garnered between 2013-2022. In 2021, she placed seventh in individual Real Commissions Earned in New Mexico, and in 2022, was again given one of her several Platinum Club awards. “I kept getting calls. So, I figured it wasn’t time to retire and here I am.” she said. “Investing in a vacation home in Angel Fire,” she’s been quoted, “is way more fun than stocks and bonds and mutual funds.” Definitely known as a can-do person, she is also deeply committed both to her family and to her clients. “It has been much more than a job for me! It is a way to share my experiences of mountain living with those who have always dreamed of this life. I am so grateful for ‘just another day in paradise’. Many people get to vacation in the mountains...but God has allowed me to live here. What a blessing!”

Taos Real Estate Market Report Year-to-date October 31, 2023 (10 months)
© Peter Lora of the Lora Company
Sales in 2023 continue to lag behind 2022’s pace, with the number of sales and the dollar volume down in all categories of property. This trend will continue for the rest of the year. The red-hot market of 2020-2022 was bound to cool off given the sharp spike in interest rates, as well as anxiety about the economy and the geopolitical situation. Call me for a free market analysis of the value of your property, and a consultation about the market and the selling process.
SINGLE-FAMILY HOMES – Sales have been down compared to last year in every month except June. Year-to-date unit sales are below last year for the same period by 28%. Dollar sales are down 32%. Median price is the same as last year, but average price is down 7%. The price rises of 20%-25% per year during the 2020-2022 market surge were unsustainable. We are seeing some substantial price reductions on list prices that were based on prior market conditions. However, there is still more demand than supply, with the inventory of homes listed for sale the lowest it has been in many years; therefore, prices should remain fairly firm—at least for the near term. CONDOS – Condo sales have been down in every month so far this year. Through ten months, unit sales are down 42% compared to last year. This is mainly due to a lack of inventory---there very few condos available for purchase. Dollar sales are down 33%. Median and average prices are actually up 17% and 15%, respectively. This is probably due to the composition of sales this year: proportionally more higher-priced condos than last year. LAND – Year-to-date number of sales is down by 18% compared to last year. Land didn’t have as hot a year last year as homes and condos did, so the cooling off is not as much as in the residential market. Dollar sales are down 27%, with both median and average prices decreasing 11%. The high cost to build a home, and the long time it would take (due to builders’ backlog of contracts) are dampening buyer interest in land. However, with the inventory of homes and condos likely to remain extremely low for the foreseeable future, building will make sense for some people.

Holiday Recipes by Dena Miller
Despite the dwindling daylight and decidedly colder weather, everything just seems warmer and cozier as the holidays approach. The aroma of piñon fragrances the air; farolitos adorn rooftops and walkways; and at home, pots of stews and ovens of roasts or casseroles are mouthwateringly calling hungry family members to the table. It is also the traditions of the holidays that sate us with a treasure trove of memories and nostalgia — anticipated for months, then reverently savored as the season unfolds. After all, traditions are not just the roots of family but also give a community its identity; it is no wonder we hold them so dear to our hearts. Ranchos Plaza Grill is a family-owned-and-operated restaurant that is known not just for its excellent food but for its preservation of local traditions. The Medina family prides itself on serving traditional New Mexican food all year long, and at

this time of year they celebrate the cultural heritage for which the state is renowned by including on its menu several dishes that represent the best of the season. “Chicos are a winter holiday staple,” said chef Adam Medina. “And we offer natillas, thanks to my wife, Raelynn, at this time, as well.” Chicos are not to be confused with posole, which are hulled corn kernels. Instead, chicos are whole ears of corn typically steamed in a horno or other outdoor oven, then sun-dried. The result is an otherworldly roasted sweet, smoky complex taste, one which Ancestral Puebloans mastered as a method for enduring a long winter with sparse provisions. And natillas is a creamy, custardy confection with centuries-old roots in Spanish and Hispanic culture. Its sweet goodness is a generational favorite, from youngsters to great-grandparents. The Medinas have generously shared two of their favorite holiday recipes for all to enjoy and, perhaps, to include in your own holiday traditions going forward. Ranchos Plaza Grill is located at 8 Ranchos Plaza, neighboring San Francisco de Asis Mission Church, in Ranchos de Taos. For further information, please call 575-758-5788. Heat 1 ½ cups milk to a boil. In a separate bowl, combine sugar, cornstarch, salt, egg yolks and 1 tbsp milk; stir until smooth. Add sugar mixture to boiled milk and cook over medium heat for about 10 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Beat egg whites until stiff and fold into mixture. Spoon into ramekins or serving bowl and sprinkle top with cinnamon. Place in refrigerator for at least 2 hours and serve cold. Makes 4 servings.

T
he home of Patricia and Michael Ninneman glows with warmth, light and the beauty of the holiday season. Each room is full of cherished Christmas decorations shining in the flickering of candlelight and fireplace flames. The adobe wall at the entry is decorated with farolitos that welcome friends and family to the home. Richie the Yorkshire terrier greets visitors wearing his festive Christmas sweater and a tie. Patricia explained that the love of her family is the reason she decorates her home so beautifully each holiday season. She said, “I want to give my children and grandchildren warm memories and feelings of love at the holiday. The decorations and the smell of posole, tamales, gingerbread and biscochitos create a feeling of security and coziness. That’s what is important to me, to give my family special memories. The whole season is about giving and loving.” She remembers that when her granddaughter smelled the holiday food cooking, she said, “Now, it’s Christmas.”

Christmas traditions and community
Patricia grew up with her mother decorating and cooking. Her daughter, Gina Apodaca, lives next door and continues the tradition by decorating at her house. The Ninnemans have lived in their La Cordillera home for 29 years. Patricia decorates for every season, but Christmas is a special event. They’ve been married for 35 years and each year they’ve added a few new decorations. Since their daughters were little, they have prepared for Christmas in a big way. Now they make the same effort for their grandchildren. Patricia said, “They know what granny’s house looks like at Christmas and they hold that in their hearts and it makes special memories for them. Two of the grandkids grew up next door and they come to visit at Christmas.” The home was built in 1975 and when the Ninnemans bought the house, they remodeled it to make it comfortable for their daughter with special needs: Vanessa, who passed away five years ago. They still decorate her room with the same special Christmas tree.

Patricia was born and raised in Taos, as were her parents. They owned the four Tastee-Freezs in the region the late-1960s and early-1970s. Michael came to Taos on vacation in 1974 from California. He ended up buying Spivey’s Café, which soon became Michael’s Kitchen. The restaurant has been owned by their daughter Gina and son-in-law Derek for the last 18 years. Michael said, “Taos has been very good to us. We appreciate the love and support from everyone.” Patricia added, “The community has supported the restaurant and us as a family with a special needs daughter. This community knew who Vanessa was and, when she was out with us, people were kind and loving. This is a great community to live in.”

Cherished decorations
When asked about which of the decorations are special to her, Patricia said, “Everything I put up is special. I have memories of how each one came to us.” She pointed out a blue stained-glass angel in the kitchen window. “The angel was made by a friend’s father and now he is turning 100. He made stained glass in his older years; he must have been 80 when he made the angel for us. It hangs here all year. He also made an angel with a heart for Vanessa.” A German wooden carousel — that spins when the candles are lit — decorates the dining room table and there is another one in the kitchen. Early in their marriage, the couple brought a total of three carousels home with them from Washington, D.C., carefully packed in homemade boxes and held on Patricia’s lap on the plane home. A little ceramic tree made by Patricia’s mother and a hand painted nativity scene made by her Aunt Lucy are both about 50 years old and are among her cherished decorations. This is a special place to come home for the holidays. Its spirit of love and joy embraces family and friends and celebrates the little child in all of us.

A Local Holiday Guide to Taos & Northern New Mexico
Photo: Elijah Rael @elijahraelphotography_nm
¡Bienvenidos! Welcome to Northern New Mexico
~ a culturally rich community, surrounded by an incredibly diverse landscape that offers a plethora of activities and traditions to experience, and breathtaking views to witness, all of which make it an ideal place to Live & Visit during the Holidays. As a multi-generation New Mexican, I’m excited to share some of my favorite activities to experience during the Winter and Holiday season aquí in Northern New Mexico! One of the region’s most notable treasures are our four ski and snowboard resorts nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Taos Ski Valley (TSV), Red River Ski and Summer
36
Area, Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort, and Angel Fire Resort all have different experiences to offer, but they share one thing in common: world class skiing for all experience levels. The largest of the four resorts, Taos Ski Valley, has deep roots dating back to 1954 when Ernie and Rhoda Blake founded the resort. While visiting TSV, I highly recommend visiting some of the locally owned businesses for shopping and to satisfy your appetite. The independently owned Alpine Village Suites, located just above Cottam’s Ski Shop and the Boot Doctor, is a great alternative for accommodations. Some of my favorite places for eating and drinking are Der Gartten, Hondo Restaurant at the Snakedance, and The Bavarian Restaurant for an authentic German apres experience. Another great option is to
have your own picnic out by a bonfire – you can find everything you need at Cid’s Market and Bumps, including delicious grab & go options. Between runs, grab a warm beverage at Black Diamond Espresso, then head over to Confluence to discover a variety of local artisan goods, followed by a hot toddy at Rolling Still or Taos Ale House in the Valley. Around the Holidays, Los Matachines, Los Manueles, and many other folk dramas of the region are worth exploring. The lighting of Ledoux Street and Yuletide Christmas Tree Lighting, the Christmas Eve Vespers Mass at the San Geronimo Church located at Taos Pueblo, and the Taos Pueblo Deer Dance on Christmas day are four events that I highly recommend observing during the holiday seasons,
amongst many others. Be sure to check out my Winter and Spring Guide in the Discover Taos Magazine on shelves everywhere for more local info! Don’t hesitate to reach out directly at (575) 770-8650 or email me at ryan@HomeInNM.com. You can also find me online @HomeInNM for more seasonal Northern New Mexico recommendations and local insider info (visit @Taos on Instagram for an authentic glimpse into N.NM). I’m happy to discuss the local Real Estate market. Be sure to support local artists and artisans, the people who keep Northern New Mexico true to our roots. Happy Thanksgiving.
Mis Crismes! Happy Holidays!

Benedictine Monks of Taos Gift Shop Sanctuary of peace by Cindy Brown | photos by Liam DeBonis ntering the Benedictine Monk Shop, there is an atmosphere of calm and peace. Soft chanting fills the air and there is a light scent of handmade soap, along with candles and spices. It is a sanctuary amid the hurry and rush of the outside world. A large wooden nativity set with angels carved in Mexico is on display in the front window, inviting people in. The shop is full of symbols of the season with paintings and statues of the mother and child, Christmas ornaments, in addition to spices, cookbooks, and gifts of frankincense and myrrh to be found among lighted garlands.

Established in 2019, the store has items made by the monks at the Taos Benedictine Monastery of San Juan Diego like the handcrafted soaps, oil and vinegar sets, and New Mexico comfort soup. There are seasonal holiday soaps in the shapes of snowflakes and trees, along with gifts from New Mexico like the set of spices wrapped with a red bow. Look for other seasonal specialties like Italian Christmas cookies. There are religious as well as other items in the store. Among the favorites are the Mexican-made wooden hearts-on-fire painted in vibrant shades of silver, gold and red, and some decorated with milagros. There is an extensive selection of retablos — painted saints who are symbols of protection like San Francisco de Asis who is the guardian of animals, kindness and ecology. The primary purpose of the shop is to support the work of the monks in Taos and monks elsewhere who provide products for the shop. The monastery in Taos opened four years ago in the former home of the covenant and school for girls — run by the Sisters of Loretto from 1863 until the school closed in 1973 on the grounds of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish. Father John-Paul Michael O.S.B., who was assigned to run the shop, said, “We want visiting the shop to be a gentle and positive experience. People tell us they feel the spirit of God and St. Benedictine here. The Benedictine life is one of work, prayer and hospitality.” The Christmas season offers the perfect time to invite everyone into that spirit of peace. The Benedictine Monks of Taos gift shop is located at 105 Kit Carson Road; 575-751-8531. Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., except for Sunday. All of the items in the shop are available online at benedictinemonksoftaos.org.

COMMUNITY PROFILE
TOWN OF TAOS
COMMUNITY PROFILE The 5.4 square miles of incorporated town of Taos spreads out beneath the shadow of Pueblo Peak (12,305) and is bounded roughly by the Río Lucero on the north and Río Grande de Ranchos on the south. At 7,000 feet in elevation, Taos experiences winter lows in the single digits and summer highs in the low 90s. Taos Puebloans inhabited the sage-piñón-juniper mountain front for several centuries before Spanish explorers arrived around 1600. Soon, Spanish settlers returned, armed with land grant decrees from the king. The central Plaza became the hub of activity and the site of conflicts – often bloody – between the Spanish, natives, and late-arriving Americans. Long isolated from the outside world, Taos began to grow in the 1960s with an influx of hippies to nearby communities. Taos continues to grow to this day with young ski bums and rafters and older retirees.
52
Commercial activity centers on the Plaza area and along north and south ends of Paseo del Pueblo, the main thoroughfare. A popular home for Southwest artists, Taos boasts dozens of galleries, boutiques, and craft shops – plus renowned studio tours and arts and crafts festivals. Dozens of restaurants serve up wide varieties of cuisine; the Northern New Mexico red-sauce dishes are celebrated. Just south of town in Ranchos de Taos sits St. Francis de Asís Catholic Church, reputed to be the most photographed church in America. The Catholic influence can be seen in the cemeteries, roadside descansos, and neighborhood churches called capillas and moradas. The locals speak a patois of English and Castilian Spanish. As the county seat, Taos is home to the county government and district courts. The U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management have a strong presence in town. On the outskirts of town, pastures, fields, and gardens irrigated by ancestral acequias extend out from the rivers and streams.

COMMUNITY PROFILE
TAOS SKI VALLEY COMMUNITY PROFILE Taos Ski Valley sits at the head of the Rio Hondo Canyon, surrounded by Carson National Forest in what is known as the La Cal Basin. New Mexico’s highest point, Wheeler Peak (13,167), rises to the east, and the ridge off Kachina Peak (12,481) sets the western boundary. The climate is montane and alpine, with winter lows below zero and summer highs in the 70s. The economy of the area is dominated by Taos Ski Valley, a world-class winter sports mountain that is known for its steep trails and an average of 300 inches of snowfall. The basin first attracted settlement when gold and copper were discovered in the early 1900s. Founders Ernie and Rhoda Blake put up the first ski lift in 1956 and, until 2013, the family owned the resort. In 2013, the family sold the mountain and facilities to former hedge fund manager Louis Bacon, who began upgrades and renovations starting with the 2014 construction of the Kachina Peak chairlift. The base area, at 9,200 feet elevation, includes day and overnight facilities. The mountain has 15 lifts and 110 trails, with a total vertical drop of more than 3,000 feet. Typically, about 250,000 skiers
and snowboarders hit the slopes every year. Other winter activities include snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross-country and back-country skiing, and tubing. In the summer, the main chairlift takes hikers, mountain bikers and sightseers to mid-mountain. The Village of Taos Ski Valley, incorporated in 1996, encompasses 2.3 square miles in the valley and administers municipal services, such as water, sewer, and police.

COMMUNITY PROFILE
RED RIVER COMMUNITY PROFILE The town of Red River bustles along the Red River, a mountain tributary to the Rio Grande. The settlement’s elevation is 8,750 feet, and it’s surrounded by Carson National Forest and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The climate ranges from winter lows below 0 to summer highs in the 70s. Thunderstorms often roll through on summer afternoons. Gold miners first settled the area in the mid-1800s. These days, the local economy relies upon winter tourists who ski and snowboard, plus summer tourists who come to hike, mountain bike, drive ATVs and relax in the cool temperatures. Some 1,200 seasonal homes house many of these visitors. Red River Ski Area rises to the south of town with a vertical drop of 1,600 feet. The mountain includes 58 trails and six lifts on 290 acres and typically attracts more than 120,000 ticket buyers in a winter season. The ski area offers a popular Aerial Ropes Course and the Pioneer Flyer, a small seated-type zip line. In the summer, lifts run for mountain bikers, hikers, and sightseers.
54
For a fee, wintertime enthusiasts can explore the 21 miles of groomed skiing and snowshoeing trails at Enchanted Forest Cross-Country Ski and Snowshoe Area, located 3 miles east of town. In town, private rental services lease out snowmobiles and ATVs, and horse trail-riding is a popular summer activity. The town of Red River administers municipal services for residents, visitors and nearly 200 businesses in the community. The town hosts a number of popular summertime events, beginning with the three-day Memorial Day Motorcycle Rally that typically attracts more than 20,000 motorcyclists for the long weekend.

COMMUNITY PROFILE
ANGEL FIRE COMMUNITY PROFILE Angel Fire is located at an elevation of 8,382 feet above sea level in the high Moreno Valley of Colfax County. The climate mirrors the Rocky Mountain setting that includes some of the highest peaks in New Mexico. In winter, about 210 inches of snow typically fall on Angel Fire, and average temperatures range between 0 and 30 degrees. Summertime highs rarely exceed 80 degrees, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms that cool off midday temperatures. Originally a favored hunting ground for the Utes, the Moreno Valley grew in the 1860s with the discovery of gold. Ranching dominated the local scene until the 1960s when the first ski runs of Angel Fire Resort were cut on Agua Fria Peak. Tourism fuels the local economy although several large, working ranches still operate in the area.
Surrounded by U.S. National Forest and private ranches, the incorporated village of Angel Fire covers 18,450 acres. The village includes the general aviation Colfax County Airport and the Angel Fire Ski & Golf Resort, a private membership community overseen by the Association of Angel Fire Property Owners. The resort has more than 2,000 private homes, a 500-acre ski and snowboard mountain, a destination zip line, a championship golf course, country club, fishing lake and other amenities for member-landowners. Nonmembers can pay to use most resort facilities.

COMMUNITY PROFILE
TAOS COUNTY
COMMUNITY PROFILE The boundaries of Taos County stretch from the Colorado border on the north to the Cañón del Río Grande on the south. Containing 2,203 square miles, the 7,000-foot-high Taos Valley is bounded in the east by the soaring Sangre de Cristos of the southern Rockies and in the west by the lower Tusas Range. The terrain crosses a half-dozen ecological zones, from high-alpine tundra to sage grasslands; thus, weather is often localized. The Río Grande carves a deep gorge down the center of the valley, which is dotted with old volcanic cones and necks. Tribal members of Picuris Pueblo have lived above the Río Pueblo near Peñasco for centuries. Taos Pueblo is the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the United States and the northernmost of the 19 Río Grande pueblos. Pueblo history traces back some 1,000 years - centuries before the first Europeans arrived in the late 1500s. These conquistadors claimed the land for Spain, and soon Spanish and Mexican land grantees settled in the Taos area. Ancestral acequias still divert water from seven watersheds along the Sangre de Cristo front into pastures, fields, and orchards.
Roughly 50 percent of Taos County’s 1,444,480 acres is federal land, primarily U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. About 38 percent of the county is private. Native Americans own 4.3 percent, and state lands make up 6.7 percent. Federal lands accommodate hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, ATV and snowmobiling, hunting and fishing. Golfers tee off at Taos Country Club and Valle Escondido; skiers and snowboarders carve up Taos Ski Valley and Sipapu Ski Area. Government jobs predominate in the local economy and, in the last several decades, tourism has replaced agriculture as a primary economic driver. Real estate and home construction provide revenues and jobs. Visitors come to experience the triculture atmosphere, the hundred-mile views, and adobe stylings - and many return for good. The county is home to a significant number of retirees, many of whom have already purchased second homes. It is also home to several off-thegrid communities west of the Río Grande, including the Earthships of the Greater World Community.
