She hadn’t planned to return to Taos but did so to help run the family business, Friday Motors. This led her to meet the man she would marry. Together, they built a family. Friday Jagers expanded her marketing and financial skills in the auto business. Beyond assisting her customers with finding the right car, she helped them finance and maintain it. A client-focused perspective means she’s “committed to getting the results that they want.” After the family sold the dealership in 2019, Friday Jagers assumed control of their commercial properties. She attained her realtor’s license to better serve their tenants, then saw it as an opportunity to reinvent herself. She joined the team at Century 21 as an associate broker. With their guidance and mentorship, she is learning her role and responsibilities. Philosophy The foundation of Friday Jagers’ relationship with her clients is – and has always been – to ask, “What is it that people want, what is it they need and how can I help them with that?” She notes that communication and the relationships she negotiates are equally crucial for this goal. Set on three acres, the house feels private and far away, but in reality, it is close to town. Celebratory fireworks are visible from the house, along with sunsets that sweep across the sky and give way to stardotted dark nights. Located close to the Carson National Forest, wild animals including bear, fox, coyote, and bobcat are often seen and a herd of 32 elk visited this winter. The house is tastefully designed so the elegant furnishings fade away to allow the views to shine. The living room is a peaceful place to meditate in solitude, as well as a comfortable place to spend time with friends. Gilster loves to cook and enjoys the innovative kitchen features like the Bosch induction stove top that heats up and cools down instantly.

A SMALL HOUSE COMFORTABLE FOR THE HUMAN SPIRIT Gilster bought the land 20 years ago and moved forward with construction in 2016. With its small footprint, the house exemplifies the market trend towards smaller spaces. Gilster says that the National Association of Realtors research shows that the market will welcome houses between 1,500 and 2,000 square feet; her house is 1,900 square feet. “That makes sense to me,” says Gilster. “As I look at our children’s generation and younger, they don’t want big grand expensive houses.” She adds “Many years ago, I read the book ‘The Not So Big House’ and that was a huge influence on me. The book explores the idea that the human spirit is more at home in a smaller space. When it gets to be cavernous it loses its appeal.”
DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY Gilster’s background in the design and space planning fields is on display with each thoughtful touch, including the Hunter Douglas blinds that feature the highest R-value for insulation on the market, in addition to resisting soil and dust. All the blinds can be controlled through Gilster’s smart phone. She explains that the whole house is run on an Apple Home system that allows her to not only open the blinds, but also control her front gate, house lighting, garden irrigation, heat and humidity remotely from anywhere in the world where she has a phone signal. “I couldn’t have built this house five or 10 years ago, the technology didn’t yet exist,” says Gilster. Her husband, Norman Gilster is an electrical engineer and security expert. He designed many of the systems in the house, including the air exchange system that brings in fresh air and filters out sand, dust, smoke and pollen. The state of the art heat and air conditioning also includes a humidifier. The sophisticated video surveillance system allows her to see what is happening around the house, including capturing photos of a recent visit from a bear that came to investigate her bird feeders. The whole house, including floors, walls and ceiling are constructed using SIP technology (structural insulated panels), one of the strongest and most insulated forms of construction. The floors are cork. “I don’t understand why everyone doesn’t have cork floors,” says Gilster. ”Like other wood types, it can be finished any way you want. It lasts a long time, is insect repellant, water and noise repellant and insulating for sound and heat. Cork is a renewable resource and is soft to walk on.”

Even though it is not large, the house feels spacious with its vaulted ceilings. The low voltage/LED cable lights provide a soft light to the room and leave intact the feeling of wide open spaces.

OUTDOOR SPACE The exterior of the house is simple and clean with its grey roof and light colored bricks. An architect from Iceland designed the home and a certain Nordic aesthetic is evident. A garden with water features, young fruit trees and roses greet visitors to the house. Re-blooming dwarf lilies define a graceful curve that will create a private garden room as they grow. “The intent is that when the lilacs mature, that will create a private space around the cutting flower garden, water features, seating spaces and hammock area,” explains Gilster. “I always wanted an English garden room for meditation.”
TAOS STYLE WITH A MODERN FLAIR When architect Oli Johannsson and wife came to visit the house as it neared completion, the architect’s wife asked what Gilster would have done differently in the design and construction of the house. Gilster said “Not a thing. This is exactly what I wanted.” Her vision created a house with Taos Style that embraces the natural beauty all around us in an efficient and elegant way.

Angel Fire is located at an elevation of 8,382 feet above sea level in the high Moreno Valley of Colfax County. The climate mirrors the Rocky Mountain setting that includes some of the highest peaks in New Mexico. About 210 inches of snow typically fall on Angel Fire in the winter, and average temperatures range between 0 and 30 degrees. Summertime highs rarely exceed 80 degrees, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms that cool off midday temperatures.

very basic creative way. No cookie cutter here. And the same can be said for the rambling farm house of Michael and Bonnie Kaufman, again, in Hondo. And it may not be a coincidence that they are both in the same area as that was New Buffalo, the '60s hippie compound that is now a bed-and-breakfast. Historically, in Taos, when folks built homes they had to deal with the climate and used simple techniques to deal with the heat of the summer sun. Windows were small to keep the sun out, especially on the south side of the house. On the north side, there were likely no windows, to ward against the winter cold. Today, folks want light and bright. And while the sun is still as hot as it used to be – some might say hotter due to global warming, but we won’t go there – thanks to new construction materials, and advances in design due to technology, small windows just don’t cut it anymore. The people who are coming here today want views and that calls for large windows. I guess today’s newcomers also have a few more dollars in their pockets and can build what they really want. Although not all, for sure.
TAOS STYLE. BY HARVEY BLAUSTEIN
One of the traits of Taoseños I treasure so is the lack of consumerism in our culture. There are lots and lots of reasons for that, not the least of which is the lack of money in our economy. Truth be told, fashion is not an issue here. Trends that affect decisions on the coasts, for example, just don’t even reach our eyeballs or enter our minds. With that said, I have lived here long enough now, some 26 years, that I do see changes in Taos Style. What folks who are moving here want and expect is different today. And what once passed for “funky” is now “dated” and that is not an adjective one wants applied to one’s home. Having said that there are some awesome character homes here and there that are throwbacks to the '60s and '70s when hippies were dominant in the Anglo culture. One example of a truly unique and full of authentic character home is that of Suzanna Starr in Arroyo Hondo. She may well have updated it from when I was in it last, but it was stellar in a
When we came here some 25 plus years ago, flooring was Saltillo tile and counter tops were Mexican Talavera, with colorful patterns. They weren’t expensive but over time I think many realized that the grout lines needed to be cleaned or maintained and that can be a pain in the butt. How much that contributed to the changes we now see in what buyers want can be argued. But today's buyers ask for granite, marble or Ceasarstone. Some like the price point of poured concrete or butcher block. But they are easy peasy to care for compared to what was once fashionable and folks today don’t want to work hard in their homes to live in their homes. Taos style in floors has also changed a lot. Back in the late '80s and '90s most floors were Saltillo tile. They weren’t expensive, a lot of guys knew how to install them, and the maintenance was reasonable. People loved the character of the tiles with dog paw prints in them, many of which were man-made rather than by a random wandering animal. Today, there are many more options that people have and one's taste and pocket depth can be a guide. We have wood floors in our home in town, but they are 80 years old. One does not see too many new homes with real hardwood floors. But we do see, and folks like, poured concrete floors. Which can be awesome. One does have to be comfortable with the inevitable cracking that seems to follow, although I have seen some where the finish remained whole. Here one can work with color, some of it really special. And many put rugs over prominent cracks to make them go away. Want stone? It’s out there. Still like Saltillo and the old Taos feel? You can do that. As always, Taos Style is as varied as the folks that inhabit this incredible valley. One of the truly special appeals for me is the variety of folks and how we all dance to the beat of our own drums. That is never more clear than in Taos Style, which I have been quoted as saying is no style. It’s live how you want to live with little judgment from those around you.
