stores, restaurants, hotels and galleries. Although the installations are numbered for clarity, there is no order to the stroll through the PASEO.
“New for the PASEO 2016 are a series of ‘mobile’ pieces that will roam at will around the festival. … You just never know what you may run into,” Thomas says.
You can linger as long as you like at any artwork, visit them out of order and/or visit all of them methodically. The experience is up to you.
When the PASEO kicked off in 2014, it was only a one-day event, as Thomas and the whole PASEO team had no idea how well it would be received. Approximately 20 artists participated – with performance art, video projections, light pieces and mind-blowing installations that came to life.
“A goal with the PASEO is to get lost in your own community. We want the art to disorient you, disrupt your daily stroll and wake you up to a street corner you never really saw before or a courtyard that was practically hidden before you. the PASEO and the art it hosts [invite] the community to explore where we live – either for the first time or with a set of fresh eyes.”

Visitor attendance and local feedback were extremely positive and overwhelming, so Thomas and the PASEO team knew they had to extend the event to be a two-day festival. They did so in 2015. the PASEO will also last two days this year.
For the PASEO 2016, Thomas and co-director Agnes Chavez hosted an international call for entries during press time. The PASEO team is guided by an advisory board, and it is excited to bring amazing works to Taos by local artists and artists from all over the world.
Thomas reflects on his experiences of the past two PASEO festivals. He says, “Big magic can happen when you bring a community together around the theme of art. I never expected the PASEO to be accepted so widely and excitedly, so quickly. This type of festival is rare to come across.”
Thomas explains that the PASEO focuses on work that is participatory, or artwork that really demands the inclusion of its audience to make it complete. Art lovers can expect to find performance art that responds to the audience, small- and large-scale works that disorient and reframe a person’s perspective of Taos and, of course, projection art that casts a whole new lens on the historical surfaces of our historic mountain town.
He explains that the PASEO has the “small-town community” touch combined with world-class, cutting-edge artwork from around the globe.
g al l e r y g u i d e o f ta o s . c o m
“All art aside, the audience itself is half the fun and is really becoming the number one reason to visit. Taos has hosted art and artists for centuries, and the PASEO takes that into the 21st century,” says Thomas.
