Health Insurance Exchange FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS By Maria Meadowcroft
T
he Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as ACA or “Obamacare,” was signed
into law on March 23, 2010. It initiated the most significant changes in the U.S. health care system since Medicare was established in 1965. Since then, our health care system has been slowly changing. One of the key measures of the new health reform law is that it extends coverage to millions of Americans without health insurance and broadens insurance benefits. Most Americans are required to have health insurance starting in 2014 or pay a tax penalty. Over the past six months, Taos Health Systems has had health care guides available to help local residents navigate New Mexico’s health insurance market place. They have successfully met with, created accounts for, and enrolled 100 consumers in the Health Insurance Exchange. They have coached another 50 people over the phone, and completed 414 Medicaid applications since October 2013. As our health care guides have talked to hundreds of people they’ve been asked many questions and have heard many concerns. We’d like to share some of the
most common ones:
What happens if I don’t get insurance? The open enrollment deadline is March 31, 2014. If you are not enrolled in a health insurance plan either through the insurance exchange, Medicaid or your employer, you can file an exemption. There are many ways to qualify for one. Our health care guides can help determine if you qualify and even help you file so you don’t receive a tax penalty. If you have coverage now, but move or become un-employed and don’t have insurance, you can have up to three months within a year before you begin accruing a tax penalty. The penalty will begin at the fourth month, and continue for each month after that you are not covered.
I’ve never needed insurance in the past – why do I need it now? We don’t know what is going to happen to the programs that non-insured and indigent populations HEALTH INSURANCE EXCHANGE CONTINUES ON PAGE 16

What if I can’t afford the monthly payments? Monthly payments are referred to as premiums. Depending on your annual earnings, you may qualify for a premium tax credit that could lower your monthly payments. The cardinal rules of healing By Dr. Win Smith

not the promotion of a positive. Unfortunately for the past 30 years or so, the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. has been and still remains the consequences of pharmaceutical drugs taken and used, as directed, so this edict has been abandoned and replaced by the worship of 'modern' medicine and its synthetic drugs. When unburdened from substances and foods that create illness, the body can heal itself. The schedule for this healing cannot be directed by our own limited understanding of nature's course, but must be surrendered to. We must have faith that the correct diet of fresh, non-toxic foods, combined with the removal of toxic substances, will allow the body's inherent capacity for healing to manifest itself according to its own schedule and its own methods via its inherent wisdom. Some

These manifestations may not, however, be immediately seen or sensed; rather, their effect may be cumulative and may take years to become overtly manifest. The manifestation of this violation is unnecessary suffering, disease, and premature death. The human body is a holy temple. Violation of the laws of nature defiles this temple.

Finally, after 10 years - relief! - Maria Perez “My name is Maria Perez. Ten years ago I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. I have had joint destruction typical of this disease in numerous joints for these past 10 years, and was given prednisone, methotrexate, and other drugs to try to control it. My rheumatologist finally said he could do nothing more for me. I even went to a popular nutritionist who used a computer to determine the best diet for me. Despite the drugs and diet, I kept getting worse, and eventually could hardly walk. One year ago I began treatment with Dr. Win Smith. I was skeptical since he said the primary treatment would be diet. But after following his unique protocol for the past year, I now take no medication, and can say that I am at least 70% improved. I walk regularly, and most joints don’t even have pain any longer.” Many diseases, even so called incurable ones, often respond favorably to the correct treatment. I have developed effective protocols for many illnesses, and patients often improve dramatically and may even be able to safely stop taking prescription medication as well. Call me, Dr. Win Smith, D.O.M., at (575) 758-2038 for an appointment to see what I can do for you.
I can’t promise a cure, but if you suffer from chronic pain or chronic illness, please call me, Dr. Win Smith, D.O.M. at 575-758-2038 for an appointment. You owe it to yourself to get the best, most effective natural treatment available.

High animal protein diets such as the Atkins diet, Paleo diet, Omni diet, South Beach diet, etc., violate the laws of nature, and often embody the false god of weight loss as their primary motivation and justification. These diets defile the holy temple that is our body, the result of which is disease and death.
5. Virtually all modern medical approaches, whether with drugs or so called natural medicines such as herbs, amino acids, or nutritional supplements, are designed to address certain symptoms, not the actual cause of illness, and are often symptom suppressive, not curative. while useful, do not represent the pinnacle of preventive medical philosophies. Unfortunately, today's miracle drug all too often becomes tomorrow's class action lawsuit. Even the most cursory research demonstrates this fact again and again. And until we get back to basics, ie., the cardinal rules of healing, this pattern will remain. Biological systems evolved with foods and their biological systems modifying constituents, and, as old fashioned as it may seem, food will always be the most powerful and effective medicine. As Hippocrates wrote: “let your food be your medicine.” That is the true Hippocratic oath. Dr. Win Smith obtained his bachelor of science from Furman University, and has been licensed in New Mexico as a Doctor of Oriental Medicine since 1982. He apprenticed in Oriental Medicine with Dr. Hsi Yu Tao, and has been incorporating natural healing methods in his clinical practice since 1976.

PERSONALIZED NATURAL MEDICINE
FOR A VIBRANT YOU
Dr. Caroline Colonna, a Doctor of Oriental Medicine certified by the NM Board of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (BAOM) and the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) since 1998, helps patients truly achieve a healthier lifestyle. She is also a professional triathlete, mother, and step-grandmother. FAQ: I’ve been on prescription meds for high blood pressure (HBP) for years, but I don’t think it’s good for me to keep taking them. Can you help me safely get off them? : Yes. Using the Oriental Medicine Diagnostic Model and modern tests, I can identify the underlying causes for your HBP and then treat them. FAQ: What might be causing my HBP? : Chronic stress is a frequent cause, along with too much sitting and a nutrient deficient diet. The Adrenal Stress Index (ASI) test can provide insight into how stress is impacting your cortisol (stress hormone) and adrenal functions. I use patients’ ASI test results to help me diagnose their stress level as well as monitor the effectiveness of our treatments. FAQ: So you don’t use a “one size fits all” approach to treating your patients with HBP? : No. I develop a personalized treatment plan for my patients with chronic lifestyle issues; it takes commitment to reestablish health. I use acupuncture to rebalance the flow of energy and recommend lifestyle modifications to help them achieve their health goals, such as sitting less, eating nutrient rich foods, and engaging in at least one mindful activity, like yoga, qi gong or
meditation, each day. Frequently, we also have to work on restoring quality sleep to achieve optimal results. FAQ: Does acupuncture hurt? : No. The needles I use are extremely thin and masterfully inserted to ensure a painless experience. FAQ: I have a friend who wants to lose weight. Can you help her, too? : Yes. In fact, I go beyond helping patients lose weight. I help them reduce their biological age by selecting individualized nutrients, based on their unique biological needs; recommending specific lifestyle changes; and making a commitment to follow through with our plan—together. FAQ: Is it expensive? : Not necessarily. A number of insurance plans cover at least some of the costs for tests and treatment. And I strive to find the most economical way to test and treat my patients. FAQ: Can I drop by or call you at to discuss my health issues? : Please do. My role, as your doctor, is to guide and support your healing process. Your role, as my patient, is to take your health into your hands and make the changes you need to make to achieve your goals.
