Our identity is in our roots

A tree without roots is really just a piece of wood. And while a tree can stand tall on its own, it is strengthened and protected by the other trees around it. Everyone comes from somewhere. Some people believe we chose our parents before our souls entered our bodies. Others say such a thing is just fate. Although the cultures we were raised in may share similarities, no two are identical. But the raíces (roots) planted for us by our ancestors, immediate

family and the role models who came before us, laid a foundation — a system of learning and rules of nurturing. From our raíces rise dance, music, art, food, clothing and language. In Northern New Mexico, family is upfront. Taos’ mixture of roots reside in the hearts and souls of its striking, resourceful people. Our roots planted before us and the ones we leave behind are our identity. While some communities in other parts of the country, and world, seem to be in

serious need of digging up their roots and replanting them in more fertile soil, Taos’ Raíces — whether native to Taos or not — are as strong and assimilated as ever. As Jamaican political leader, publisher, journalist, entrepreneur and orator Marcus Garvey once stated, “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” Taoseños understand their history and are proud of their culture because they know that a tree without roots cannot stand. — Scott Gerdes special sections editor
