aos is one of the most beautiful and spiritual places on Earth, making it also one of the most romantic. Local writer Virginia Clark once penned: “It is here that the elements of earth, fire, water and air conspire with the human heart to create the most benevolent atmosphere imaginable for auspicious beginnings, which is why so many couples are instinctively drawn to wed in Taos.” And she’s right. Couples come from all over the world to be blessed by Taos’ verve. And whether you live in Northern New Mexico or come from afar, now it’s your turn. Published yearly by The Taos News, this handy guide aims to serve as your Taos wedding resource no matter the season, no matter whether you envision a big bash or an intimate ceremony, no matter if you prefer a traditional or a unique ceremony, and no matter your budget. Taos has an unlimited natural and spiritual canvas on which to create your perfect day. Congratulations! May you fall in love with Taos and with each other many times over.

LEGALITIES

A license to wed MAKING YOUR UNION LEGAL

POETIC IMAGES BY DEANNA

W

hen planning a wedding, it’s important not to let things slip your mind — particularly the legal aspects of a union. Thankfully, getting a marriage license is simple in New Mexico. It’s also inclusive — in December 2013, the New Mexico Supreme Court made marriage equality the law of the land. When visiting the Taos County Clerk’s office (taoscounty.org), be sure that you both have photo identification with your birthdate and your Social Security cards. Both partners must be present at the office to sign the application. There is a filing fee of $25. Blood tests are not required in the Land of Enchantment. The marriage license book is available at the clerk’s office and is open to the public. Whether you are local residents or not, you must attain and file a marriage license if you are married

in Taos County. New Mexico licenses are only good for in-state weddings, but the couple doesn’t have to be New Mexico residents to obtain a license. Marriage licenses are issued and valid immediately and do not expire. Taos and New Mexico laws regarding weddings are fairly customary; couples may get married as long as they have a licensed or ordained clergyperson, or a judge. No one else is recognized as a legal officiate by the state. And be sure to remember that two witnesses, other than the officiate, must sign the marriage license. After the officiant signs the license, it doesn’t become official until it is filed at the county clerk’s office within 90 days of the ceremony. — Staff Report

GETTING THE LICENSE COST: $25 FILING FEE PAID WITH CASH, DEBIT OR CREDIT CARD — NO CHECKS (PHOTO IDS AND SOCIAL SECURITY CARDS REQUIRED) WHERE: TAOS COUNTY CLERK’S OFFICE, 105 ALBRIGHT STREET, TAOS (ON THE CORNER OF ALBRIGHT AND PASEO DEL PUEBLO SUR) PHONE: (575) 737-6380 HOURS: MONDAY-FRIDAY, 8 A.M.-5 P.M.

WHO PAYS FOR WHAT?

ow that you have an idea of the typical cost of a wedding, what’s the best way to work it out? Sit down with an online assistant such as The Knot Budget Calculator on theknot.com, or put a pencil to paper, and figure out what you want and can afford. Below is the traditional breakdown (as in the bride’s versus groom’s families’ typical responsibilities) of costs for everyone involved. None of this is set in stone and times change; many couples these days are paying for the wedding themselves.

Ceremony Bride and family pay for church or synagogue, sexton, organist and so on. Groom and family pay for marriage license and officiant fee.

Pre-wedding parties

Bride and family pay for bride’s dress, veil, accessories and trousseau (lingerie and honeymoon clothes). Groom and family pay for groom’s outfit. All attendants pay for their own clothing, including shoes.

Bride’s or groom’s family plans and hosts the engagement party; if there’s more than one, the bride’s family hosts the first one. Groom’s family plans and hosts the rehearsal dinner. Maid of honor and bridesmaids host the bridal shower and bachelorette party. Best man and groomsmen host the bachelor party. Friends may throw additional engagement parties or showers.

Flowers and decorations

Reception

Wedding attire

Bride and family pay for floral arrangements for the ceremony (including a chuppah if it’s a Jewish wedding ceremony) and reception, plus bouquets and corsages for bridesmaids and flower girls. Groom and family pay for the bride’s bouquet, boutonnieres for men and corsages for mothers and grandmothers.

Honeymoon Groom and family pay for the complete honeymoon.

Photography Bride and family pay for all wedding photos and video.

Bride and family pay for all professional services, including food and decorations. Groom’s family pays for the DJ or band and liquor.

Rings Bride and/or her family pay for the groom’s ring. Groom and/or his family pay for both of the bride’s rings.

Stationery Bride and family pay for invitations, announcements and wedding programs.

Transportation Bride and family pay for wedding transportation of the wedding party to and from the ceremony and reception. — Compiled by Scott Gerdes

“ONE OF A KIND” VENUES

Planning a wedding is such a joyous time. KWK Events takes that joy to a whole other level. Our daughter, Hannah, was married in Red River, September 30, 2017. From our first meeting, to the BIG day, Karen was there every step of the way. Not a detail too small or a request too big. She made our vision of a perfect day come together. Having a destination wedding can be a bit daunting unless you have Karen in your corner. Her enthusiasm is not only contagious, but also very comforting. We can’t say enough good things about Karen. Not only was the wedding beyond our expectations, we made a lifelong friend. - BARRIE BOXWELL TAPP

WHAT MARRIED PEOPLE WANT NEWLYWEDS TO KNOW

Y

RICK ROMANCITO

By Scott Gerdes

ou’re best friends. You’re in love. Now you’re making the commitment to be there for each other for the rest of your lives. But after many years of being together through life’s trials and tribulations, how do you keep that promise? Regardless of entertainment magazine and tabloid headlines and reality TV couples’ drama, marriage continues to be one of the most maturational steps people take. Maybe marriage is still desirable because human nature has an instinctive, spiritual or cultural need to partner. Besides, a healthy partnership allows for old wounds to heal and individual growth to happen, especially if each person honors

the other exactly as they are and allows them to follow their own path while continuing to strengthen their bond. My paternal grandparents were married for 68 years before my grandmother passed away in 1995, a month before their 69th anniversary. At their 50th wedding anniversary party, I asked them what they believed was the secret to their partnership’s harmonious longevity. My grandfather simply answered, “Compromise.” My grandmother nodded with a smile. We asked married couples to share their best piece of advice for newlyweds, and maybe now have a greater grasp of how to make a marriage work for the long haul.

Here are some pearls of wisdom worth taking to heart: “Be fun.”

just watching TV.”

“Laugh — a lot.”

“Work as hard with each other as you do your career.”

“Be each other’s No. 1 cheerleader. Hang in tough together to work through the difficult times.”

“After 30 years of marriage, I can confidently say that the No. 1 thing to remember is that you cannot change your spouse. Accept them for who they are. Look deep into yourself first before getting angry at your spouse or partner for the things that you’re not happy with in your life. Remember, when you point your finger at your spouse, there are four more digits pointing back at you.”

“No name-calling or belittling, ever.” “Extend grace — and a lot of it.” “Be present, kind and respectful.”

14

On a lighter note:

“It’s not 50/50 — it’s both doing 100/100.”

“The answer is always, ‘yes,’ “ according to one husband.

“Make sure you truly care and are interested in the well-being of your partner. Enjoy each other’s company even if it’s

CAKES

The icing on the cake TINA LARKIN

TINA LARKIN

By Scott Gerdes

T

he wedding cake — the often tiered bakery marvel lavished with frosting and sugary details that look more like art than food. The wedding cake is a staple of any ceremony, and its cutting is often a highlight moment. Whether you shove a bite into your spouse’s mouth or not is entirely up to you, but the cake itself should be a reflection of you both. From elegant to geometric, cake designs and flavors are as numerous and varied as every couple is unique. With 30-plus years of experience and a genuine love of designing cakes, Jocelyn Lucero of Jocelyn’s Cakes in Taos has helped create the perfect cake for many couples. Finding out the wedding theme and feel of the day, how many tiers, flavors, fillings and exterior design are all covered during a consultation, which lasts about an hour, Lucero explained.

“The first question I ask is, ‘During the last wedding you attended, do you remember the cake?’” she said. Over the years, she has noticed many trends. Rustic cake designs and more vintage styles are popular these days. “There are two worlds out there,” Lucero said. “People are wanting cake designs that reflect natural things — not so fancy or busy. And wooden presentation bases have become more popular.” Also often requested, she continued, are cakes featuring a lace design to reflect the bride’s dress. Lucero recommends that couples should order their cake about six months in advance, to a year out for out-of-towners. She also highly recommends saving the top tier or a slice or two for later. Lucero has heard many a story about the couple being so busy socializing that they miss out on enjoying a whole piece of cake, and that’s just wrong.

New Mexico nuptials WEDDINGS FOR ALL WALKS OF LIFE, SO UNIQUELY TAOS

MEGAN BOWERS AVINA

C

ouples willing to say “I do” need not look any further — from secluded inns to high altitude havens, Northern New Mexico offers them a variety of venues to tie the knot and enjoy their marital bliss in idyllic settings.

A resort wedding in the heart of Taos

Among the many features that make Taos the perfect place for a wedding is the intense light of the desert, which has been attracting painters and photographers for over a century. “Taos’ light is great for romantic portraits,” said Dan Wardlow, who married Joe, his partner of 10 years, in May 2015 at El Monte Sagrado. “Our photographer, Megan Bowers Avina, did a great job capturing it as well as the joy of the day.” Their wedding was somewhat traditional and somewhat unconventional. “Which is appropriate for the kind of people we are,” said Wardlow. Traditions were represented by the exchange of weddings vows and rings and the presence of two bridesmaids, a best man and a maid of honor. “We danced after dinner and had a beautiful cake that we cut together,” said Wardlow. “Among the nontraditional aspects was the fact that we were married by a minister who is also a well-known drag queen, the Rev. Latrice Royale.

18

A TAOS WEDDING • taosnews.com/taoswedding • 2018

Our dogs also participated in the ceremony: Arlo, the Labradoodle, was the ring bearer and Alice, the Goldendoodle, was the flower girl.” Wardlow praises El Monte Sagrado for providing a wonderful setting for the ceremony and taking care of the cocktail hour and the dinner after the wedding. Many of their guests stayed there, too. “We highly recommend Taos as a destination wedding place,” he said. “Forty-five of our friends came from out of town, and they were so enchanted with it that they promised to come back.”

Personalized weddings

Sajit Greene is a wedding officiant and interfaith minister whose wedding ceremonies are not based in any particular religious tradition. She works with the couple to find out what they want and customizes the ceremony according to their preferences and values. She was once called to officiate in an impromptu wedding ceremony that would take place in a few hours at the Gorge Bridge. “This couple called me from Albuquerque at 10 o’clock in the morning and wanted to get married here in the afternoon,” she said. “But then it became very windy, so I took them to the Farmhouse Café instead. Micah Roseberry, the owner, allowed us to do the ceremony there and gave the couple gift certificates. Two customers at the restaurant

WEDDING OPTIONS happily signed the marriage license as witnesses.” Greene can prepare an “elopement ceremony” for only the couple or a bigger and more elaborate one for family and friends. “What I love about weddings is that I get to be with people — the couple, their relatives and friends — on a day when everyone’s hearts are open and there is so much joy,” she said. “Even though I usually don’t know the couple well, there is an amazing bond that is formed in that moment when I am celebrating their love and commitment with them. It is a very special time, truly a life passage and I always feel honored to be part of it. Sometimes I am so moved that I cry.” Greene has also officiated a wedding at Palacio de Marquesa, an ideal venue for a small intimate gathering or a honeymoon destination. The luxury retreat pays homage to famous women artists who have lived in Taos. They also have complimentary gourmet breakfasts, in-room spa services and many packages.

A sheltered paradise

The secluded grounds at Touchstone Inn provide a great option for those who want a unique Taos wedding. “People can choose among many special sites in our gardens that border Taos Pueblo lands,” said Touchstone Inn owner, artist and writer Bren Price. “We have grassy lawns, secret patios and playing fountains.” As part of the service, Price provides an interfaith minister, two witnesses, flowers, and a cake and champagne reception for two. One of her ministers is the Rev. Shaman Sandra Chestnutt, who can also create a personalized ceremony for the couple.

Marriage as sacrament

Fran Martinez has been the secretary of the Holy Trinity Parish in Arroyo Seco for more than 20 years. She is the first person couples talk to when they want a Catholic wedding, then she refers them to the priest. “The most important issue about a marriage celebrated in the Catholic Church is the fact that this is a sacrament,” Martinez said. “It isn’t just about a beautiful ceremony, a lasso, flowers or candles. Marriage is for life, and the couple is required to take a preparation class before in order to understand their duties and responsibilities.”

POETIC IMAGES BY DEANNA

They have to receive three more sacraments before the wedding — baptism, first communion and confirmation and choose wedding sponsors. “The padrino and the madrina are spiritual guides for the newlyweds,” said Martinez. “They are often a married couple that the groom and the bride respect. A madrina is much more than a bridesmaid.” Worship and wedding groove In the Taos-based Christian Church Lluvias de Gracia (Rains of Grace), a wedding is a lively ceremony where music plays a big role. The choir has four keyboards, guitars, drums and several vocalists. “We conduct our ceremonies with respect, but also with joy,” says Pastor Roberto Rugelio. “And it’s totally free. If someone wants to make a donation, we gratefully accept it, but we don’t charge a cent.”

Angel Fire Resort: love at high altitude

Angel Fire Resort caters to weddings “from 10 people to 500,” says Krysty Ronchetti, public relations epresentative, SJ Communications. “We make sure that the bride and groom tie a beautiful time and space to their wedding memories,” she said. “The Sangre de Cristo Mountains provide the best background to that special moment.” Their venues range from rather casual at The Lodge to the more formal Country Club rooms. “We have something for everyone,” Ronchetti said. “Indoors and outdoors, day or night, the possibilities are endless.”

Call of the wild and free

A spirit of love calls to the couples who venture to picturesque, romantic Taos seeking a simple, inexpensive union, whether planned in advance or inspired from spontaneity. That spirit also nibbled at the heart of Taos Magistrate Judge Jeff Shannon who has been offering free Valentine’s Day nuptials at the Río Grande Gorge Bridge since 2013. When Shannon first became a judge in 2012, a couple ask him to marry them on the famed span, which he did in 2013. The ceremony gave him an idea: Why not park out there on the Day of Love, Feb. 14, whether blowing snow or beaming sunshine, and unite couples free of charge? COURTESY PHOTO

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 19

With a sign that read, “Weddings Aquí” (Weddings Here), Shannon married three couples that first year. That number has since grown. And on Valentine’s Day this year, Judge Shannon will again perform first come, first served marriages free of charge at the Río Grande Gorge Bridge from 1:30-3:30 p.m. The couples’ genders and religious affiliations are of no matter. He cannot accept tips and doesn’t want them. He only asks that couples bring two witnesses who are at least 18 years old, and a marriage license from any New Mexico county clerk’s office. Along the rim of the famous gorge is also a unique place to exchange vows anytime of the year.

Themed weddings

From Harry Potter to Downton Abbey settings, from Victorian to vintage, themed weddings are on the rise. The best thing about them is that there are no rules except for those the couple makes. Those who reject the cookie-cutter approach to tying the knot can give free rein to their creativity. Other advantages: guests tend to get more involved in the function than during traditional weddings, and the usually colorful ceremonies make great pictures either for a wedding album or Instagram. Susan Carpenter Sims, a Taos-based ordained celebrant, has performed a number of themed weddings and unique ceremonies specifically created for the couple.

“Ceremonies are profound in direct proportion to how personalized they are,” she said. “This is why I love doing weddings that are uniquely designed in collaboration with my couples to reflect their values and taste, and who they truly are as individuals and as a couple.” As an officiant, Sims always tries to find a guiding thread for all the ceremonies. The “theme” she devises can be pretty subtle or multi-faceted. Sims has also done weddings with quite obvious and even quirky themes when it suits the couple. “I did one in Red River where the entire wedding party and most of the guests were dressed in Victorian costumes with little top hats that the groom and his father had made for everyone,” she said. “The ceremony itself had a Dr. Seuss theme. I even structured the vows to have a Seuss-like rhyme scheme.” One of Sims’s favorite themes for a wedding is a labyrinth. She has performed several ceremonies at Adobe & Pines Inn, a 178-year-old Spanish hacienda with a 75-foot diameter labyrinth on the property. “Labyrinths provide a wonderful framework and metaphor for a wedding ceremony, in that walking them is calming and meditative and symbolically reflects the twisting, turning journey that a marriage really is,” she said. — Special Sections Editor Scott Gerdes contributed to this story

HUMANIST WEDDING

A humanist approach to weddings

KATHARINE EGLI

A

By Jill Martinez

humanist wedding is a joining ceremony to legally bind two individuals in marriage without any religious or spiritual constraints, but has all the spiritual, emotional and legal weight of a more traditionally religious wedding. Humanism, according to the American Humanist Association, is “A progressive philosophy of life that, without theism and other supernatural beliefs, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater good of humanity. It aspires to give individuals a sense of community, to fulfill without constraining actions or threatening punishment in the way so many religions do. Humanism encourages freedom of thought, reasoned decisions, respect for intuition and an acceptance of infallibility. The core value of the system is to meet others with understanding and acceptance, knowing that we’re all humans and we all matter.” A common assumption about humanist weddings is that they are against anything religious or spiritual. It’s not that humanism is against religion; it just doesn’t include it. The ceremony is a celebration of love, time spent together and the promise to continue walking your paths together. Your choices come first and foremost in the planning and execution of your ceremony. Some couples are also concerned that having

22

A TAOS WEDDING • taosnews.com/taoswedding • 2018

a humanist wedding could mean that they can’t respect their personal and familial traditions. Let me assure you that a humanist wedding is inclusive of everything a couple values in their relationship and experiences together. The ceremony has no constraints or rules beyond the consent of all involved. They revolve entirely around what you and your partner value most. The choices about what you want to be in your vows, how the ceremony is conducted, where the ceremony is conducted, its size and extravagance, are entirely reliant on you, and you alone. This option for your wedding is extremely customizable. You can write the entire ceremony, personalizing it and achieving a level of personal depth that may be difficult with scripted ceremonies. You can hold the wedding celebration wherever you feel most connected, with no constraints, so long as you obtain permission from the landowners where the ceremony will be held. There are endless options for your wedding’s welcome, readings, vows and exchange of rings. You can add or remove sections of the wedding, and customize them however you’d like. You could use a traditional format with an exchange of vows and rings. You could choose to adapt religious components to a secular form. Hand-fasting is another option. This is an Irish tradition

performed by the tying of hands to symbolize the binding of the couples’ lives together. Some couples choose to write amusing and personally significant sections that reflect the way they met or want to spend their lives together. This can include references to literature or films that are important to your life. Your wedding can be full to the brim of personal touches and inside jokes, with every turn revealing a memory or making you and your guests laugh. You can have an extremely private ceremony with you and your partner being the sole focus. A humanist wedding can take place in almost any setting. You could even hike to an isolated valley or forest with your partner, an officiant and two witnesses for an intimate ceremony in nature. A humanist wedding ceremony is great way to start a marriage. It is an honest representation of who you are as a couple, where you have been and how you want to live together. FLOWERS

Flower-speak

T

he colors, shapes and scents of flowers are added impact to any wedding. Flowers are a staple decoration and accessory. They are the first impression people have when they walk into the room. Choosing the right flowers for bouquets, corsages, boutonnieres and arrangements comes down to personal taste, season and even location of your ceremony.

POETIC IMAGES BY DEANNA

In the Taos environs, wildflowers, sage and sunflowers are naturally abundant. Local florists also have portfolios of other flowers and a choice of arrangements. Flowers aren’t just beautiful accents; they have a language all their own. Beginning in the Victorian era, some flowers replaced words in a most romantic way.

Here is a sampling of 10 of the most popular “tried-and-true” wedding flowers (according to theknot.com) and their wedding-appropriate meanings. ROSE

For the love of food

H

iring a caterer can be one of the most challenging missions when planning a wedding. After all, as the seasons come and go, it may slip guests’ minds that the DJ

played “Celebration” by Kool & the Gang multiple times, but they’ll remember the food — for better or worse. Remember to ask if they only cater on-site.

Somewhere old, somewhere new, somewhere with a fabulous view LOVE YOUR LOCATION

TINA LARKIN

By Scott Gerdes

T

aos has no shortage of natural beauty, historic churches and unique venues in which to exchange vows and celebrate with family and friends. The hardest part may not be the planning of your ceremony but the choosing of which place it will be held. For church listings, look in the local Names and Numbers phone book yellow pages under “churches,” or see the Spiritual Directory found weekly in the C Section of The Taos News. If your heart’s desire is a backyard ceremony, in some other outdoor space or any place in which you will need tables, chairs, tent, dance floor and more (even a bounce house, if that’s your thing), contact Liz Walsh Gilroy at Celebrations Event Rentals by calling (575) 758-8463 or go online to taos-

celebrates.com. Some venues have on-site event planners. If your perfect place doesn’t, no worries — there are experts out there who can take over on your big day. As Walsh Gilroy recommends, “You can plan your wedding, but it’s not a good idea for you to execute it. You need to be enjoying the moment with family and friends instead of worrying about where the lights go.” A resource of independent, local event planners can be found at the end of the venue list. Another helpful resource is the Taos County Chamber of Commerce (575-751-8800), who can assist with choosing locations, caterers, officiants, gifts, florists and everything in between.

PHOTOGRAPHERS

Pictures of you

S

ure, cell phones today take very good pictures but, let’s be real — selfies at weddings border on tacky, and friends and relatives trying to jockey for position to take that “only going to happen once” shot can be distracting at best.

Getting your special day properly and completely memorialized in pictures is best done by a professional, who can stay on task and offer suggestions that result in unique and beautiful shots.
