Bella
for solo vibraphone Notes Bella is a jazz waltz that I was inspired to write after playing with my young daughter outside on an early summer afternoon. The harmonic progression is similar to that of the Cool Jazz era and is somewhat circular in nature. The form is played three times (head, solo, head) with an added tag at the end. Chord changes occur every measure (with a few passing chords), and pedaling should reflect that. Eighth notes can be swung pretty heavily. The player may even want to approach this with more of a 6/8 feel to help emphasize the weight of the swung 8ths. Tempo changes are indicated at the beginning of the piece, the solo section, and the head out. They are there to help the player deal with some of the trickier block chords in the head and to generate momentum into the solo. Tempo markings are not strict and can be exaggerated in either direction.
