From the Manor to the Heights solo for snare and bass drum Notes from the composer This piece was composed for snare drum and bass drum, to be performed by one player. The title is a reference to the neighborhood in which I grew up—the Oakdale Heights—and its neighboring subdivision, the Montville Manor. The bass drum should not be played with a pedal, but rather with drumsticks. Use a small concert bass drum, drum set bass drum, or medium marching bass drum laid flat on a stand (or chairs) next to the snare drum, as shown in this diagram. The performer should experiment with varying amounts of dampening in order to achieve a staccato articulation on the bass drum. Tenuto markings indicate emphasis on a note that is noticeable but less than that of a regular accent. The stickings notated in the score correspond to this instrument setup and are also intended to communicate the rudimental nature of the music. The performer should feel at liberty to alter stickings should a different setup be used or more personalized means of execution be desired.
