Program Notes La Boda de Luís Alónso (The Wedding of Luís Alónso), also known as La Noche del Encierro (The Night of Confinement), is a well-known Spanish zarzuela by composer G. Giménez y Bellido (1854–1923). Giménez was a 1st violin player for the Teatro Principál in Spain by the age of twelve. By the age of seventeen, he was conducting operas and zarzuelas in Seville, Spain. He is best known for his work in the art form of the zarzuela, a Spanish court-based musical play with choruses and alternating spoken lines that evolved into comic opera. La Boda was one of Giménez’s most famous works and has been arranged for many different ensembles including the Mexican mariachi ensemble. This energetic work is full of sweeping melodic lines and light, fast-moving bass lines. The triplet figures are best interpreted in a more “rounded” feel like that of the Spanish-Andalusian style.
Performance Notes • • • •
The timpani part can be demanding as it contains many pitch changes and pedalings. If the player/director feels inclined, some of the moving lines may be omitted in the timpani part to make it easier for the player to execute fixed pitches on the drums. The moving lines are supported by the bass marimba. Marimba 1 and 3 (bass marimba) parts may be played on a shared instrument. Since the crash cymbal part in Percussion 2 requires fast playing, it is advised that the player use a lighter cymbal like a French-style pair of hand cymbals. (The author suggests a pair of 17” Sabian HH French-style cymbals for this part and a pair of 18” Sabian HH Viennese-style cymbals for the Percussion 1 part.) The castanet rolls in the Percussion 1 and 2 parts can be tricky to execute. If using castanets with a knob, the player should turn the castanet over with the knobs facing down, then with the finger held on top of the castanet, play a downstroke followed by a quick upstroke. This will produce a “double,” or two quick notes. Done rapidly with both hands, the player will produce a roll sound. Practice this—it takes a little time to develop!
Players and Instrumentation La Boda de Luís Alónso requires 10 players with the following instrumentation: 1 Xylophone 1 Bells 2 Vibraphones 2 Marimbas* • Shared 5-octave (low C) • 4.6-octave (low E) 5 Timpani Auxiliary Percussion (Concert snare drum, bass drum, 1 pair dark crash cymbals, 1 pair light crash cymbals, tambourine, castanets, triangle) *3 marimbas may also be used.
