PROGRAM NOTES

The idea for Stutter came through improvisation during practice sessions. The A section uses irregular rhythmic groupings in common time and excessive double strokes on each hand to convey the concept of the piece. This section is generally reserved and then builds dynamically to the B section, which contrasts with the A section by using common rhythms—primarily quarter, eighth, and sixteenth notes—but now in constantly changing time signatures to illustrate stuttering in a different way. The first half of this section uses a pattern of 7/8, 5/8, and 3/8 time signatures, with the second half using primarily 7/8. This section ends with a brief callback to the opening statement. The C section is a 12/8 groove section that I wanted to include as a change of pace. It makes use of a controlled multiple bounce technique that I am very fond of (beginning at m. 88). The final section (letter D) includes references to each of the piece’s preceding sections. It builds rhythmically and dynamically before closing with an echo of the opening statement and fading to nothing.

While Stutter is a concert snare drum solo, I wanted this piece to encourage the development of performers’ rudimental skills. The included stickings are important to the concept of the piece as well as this emphasis on rudimental growth.
