PERFORMANCE NOTES This piece is meant to be performed simultaneously to a scene from a famous Charlie Chaplin film entitled The Kid. To ensure accuracy in timing, players will use the included video to play along with. To “hide the magic,” a headphone amplifier may be used so players can hear the audio through a monitor jack while house speakers are muted (if necessary). The original performance used an inexpensive 4-way headphone amp, two splitters, and six pairs of headphones with six extension cables to allow performers to move around with ease. The suggested setup is intended for maximum efficiency in a minimal space. The debut of the piece was performed in a tiny pit orchestra section of a high school auditorium. Many of the performers share instruments throughout. With this setup, the timpani part shares the mark tree with marimba and temple blocks with the glockenspiel. The glockenspiel shares the bass drum with both the xylophone and the accessory player. (The bass drum is laid flat to achieve this.) The accessory player shares the hi-hat with the drumset, and the xylophone and marimba share the low tom. The glass-breaking effect can be achieved a number of different ways, including by quickly lowering or dropping a mark tree onto the glockenspiel, loudly playing glass wind chimes, using other glass-like “found” items, or even using an electronic sample. While some of the technical aspects may seem cumbersome at first glance, this piece comes together rather quickly. It is a guaranteed favorite with both the audience and performers. —Scott Fairdosi
