Drawing from the film Mad Max, I decided to base my design on the analogy of Madness, as I felt it to be a central theme within the film.

AGENDA SETTING

Analogy: Madness

“To design a space in which people can experience madness

Explorations

AGENDA

Social & Experiential Aspects Part 1

This area is always full of people. It is a hotspot especially during lunch times. Thus, it cannot be used for my design as it will interferer with the harmony

CONTEXT

Social & Experiential Aspects Part 2

N.B. The pathways of students were noted during the times of 1pm-2pm. Most were finishing lunch and running off to class. Thus, this was the most action packed time of the day

Interim Final Idea

While exploring my analogy of Madness, I created cube boxes out of paper and slowly destroyed them. While I did this as a means of inspiration, it suddenly occurred to me that, too much of a single thing, can lead to insanity. This became the basis of my design. I focused on cubes and ways of evoking a sense of madness in viewers. My final idea at the Interim stage, consisted of multiple cubes each consisting of a specially designed space evoking emotions that would lead to madness. This design proved to be too complex and messy, thus it was cut down to 3 rooms that would show madness through their subtle changes.

GENERATING IDEAS

Post Interim Idea

Drawing inspiration from Alice in Wonderland, I began to experiment different ways of manipulating a single space. After coming up with a basic structure, I felt that I needed to work on the exterior - to make it appear mad, when in actual fact it’s not. Thus I designed a sort of double curtain wall, that looks almost lethal and insane from a distance.

FINAL DESIGN

Room One

As the beginning to the journey of Madness, this room is open and full of light, with a glass ceiling and windows on both walls. There is no door, but rather an opening in the wall, so as to allow for 24 hour access. This room represents the beginning of Mad Max’s journey to madness, the early days, when his life was open and full of light.

Room Two

Acting as the turn towards madness, this room has a slightly upwards tilted floor and a ceiling that slopes down, completely unnoticeable to visitors. Using the light that shines through from the glass ceiling and windows of the previous room, as visitors progress here, they will inevitably feel as though something is wrong, with the darkening of light and subtle difference in height at the end of the room, to the beginning.

FINAL DESIGN

Room Three

This room allows for visitors to feel the downward spiral as one enters insanity. The stairs of varying lengths and heights of the ceiling will also play a part on the visitors’ emotions. Lighting in this room dims again as little light can get through from Room One.

Room Four

This final room presents the end of the journey. Very little light reaches this room, leaving it dark. In this room, the gradual change in floor and ceiling heights ends at a point where visitors will have to crouch in order not to hit their heads. The aim in this room, is to leave people confused as to what the purpose of the journey was. As they turn around, they will see the dim light in the distance, and walk back into the realm of sanity.

These images show the journey each visitor takes, Starting from the entrance, all the way to the end room, then the return journey. The subtle room changes are not as visible when inside as they are from a section point of view (image to the right).
