A taxi-owner was shot and killed in Lwandle yesterday (Thursday). Provincial police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana says the shooting happened at Nomzamo Taxi-Rank at 08:15. “A case of murder is being investigated. No one has been arrested at this stage,” said Rwexana. According to eyewitnesses two armed men stormed onto the taxi-rank and shot the man. They say they heard more than four shots being fired. An angry taxi-driver said drivers are not allowed to carry firearms to the rank. “We are fined if they catch us with it. Now look what happened, we couldn’t respond or follow the men.” The men took off on foot and allegedly fled in a car that was waiting close by. The slain man is believed to have been working in the taxi industry for more than two decades. He is survived by his wife, who is a teacher, and their five children. Police ask that people with information that may lead to an arrest contact the investigating officer Captain Andries Geldenhuys on 021 854 2060 or 082 469 7719.

What are we doing to make Madiba’s unified legacy real? “Strange encounter!”, my son remarked the other day. An unfamiliar person was passing by our house, and apparently was taken by surprise with what he had just witnessed. See, it was a Wednesday afternoon, and I had earlier decided to revive what a friend of mine had called “a dead project”. That of removing the weed in the yard that no one seemed to care about. This was thanks to a stalled project of renovating the house, what with bricks lying around the yard and me, being a working mum, not having the time to keep things clean. But on this day, I had decided it was time for a “clean-up campaign”. The passing stranger started talking politics, even telling us how Madiba would have loved what we are doing. The reason for his “revolutionary zeal” suddenly dawned on me. Aha, it was the potpourri of souls taking part in the cleanup campaign, you see. It was me and my son, his white friend who happened to be visiting us that day, and a coloured friend who lives with us. So to anyone in the community who has never seen such a spectacle, this was the strange encounter. A lot of stared at us as they went past, but it was the stranger who had guts enough to walk in and shower us with compliments, telling us we were what the New SA should really look like. To my son and his friend it was indeed strange that a person would pass that re-

mark. We saw a man who, crying for change in our society, had a deep desire to see the unity of South Africans and who wished he could make friends with people from different backgrounds and cultures. I pondered, is this really possible? Can this man’s wish ever come true? Author Afrika Mhlophe was on the radio the other day. His view on diversity was that it was not a blessing but a great challenge for South Africans. He said we are boxed in different man-made silos, and how difficult it is for people to step outside of these. Mhlophe made thiscomment: “When we had a Xhosa president the cabinet was filled with Xhosas, and now we have a Zulu president the cabinet is filled with Zulus. True. We see those boxes even in the work place. If the leader is a white person, most of the people in the office will be white and the black person will be given only petty jobs, their qualifications notwithstanding. True. Even the church is male-dominated because the pastor is male. But then I always consider myself one of the lucky few able to bring people of different cultures under one roof without experiencing the dilemma of a boxed-in consciousness. How about the people who really want to reach out but are limited by education, poverty, or even ignorance. What is South Africa doing to make sure this cancer, this box dilemma is being eliminated from our national consciousness? How can we break this chain which affects us in different ways? Mzantsi, there is still a lot to be done!

Seven netted for robbery in Lwandle Seven men were arrested for robbing a liquor store in Lwandle last Saturday (24 October). Police say the robbery occurred when the men entered the store on the corner of Fikile and Solomon Streets in Asanda Village about 09:45.According to police the robbers demanded money from a shop assistant while holding him at gunpoint.

“Be please to take notice that ZOLA FREDDIE MBOTSHELWA intends making application to the Commissioner of CIPC, for the re-instatement of ZET BLINDS 2009/125192/23 Be please to take notice further that any objection to the application must be lodged with the Commissioner of CIPC within twenty one (21) days of the date of publication hereof.”

The men looted the shop and fled the scene in two cars with cash, alcohol and cigarettes. Swift investigation from police led to arrests shortly afterwards when the suspects, between 25 and 35 years old, were caught on Baden Powell and Mew Roads. Three firearms were confiscated. The suspects appeared in the Strand Magistrate Court.

How are we brought up? Can anyone tell me? And do you understand my question? Can you think about it? How are we brought up? Of course you will look at yourself. You will also look at your parents. Your mind will go all over your early life. You won’t remember most of the things. And then you will remember going to school. And having friends. And growing up. And having relationships. Soon you won’t be brought up. You will be grown-up. And you will ask (if you have a head) “What kind of a grown-up am I?” “Am I going somewhere in life?” “Do I know what I want to be?” Most of the time these questions don’t bother us. We just grow up as if growing up is natural. We listen to what friends say. Sometimes friends tell us stories. They tell us stories of their adventures. How many girls they had. You know it is not right to have girls, especially when you are young. But when friends tell you they have girls, and you don’t, you are put to shame. You feel like having one. And you do. Soon you have plenty. And you impregnate some. And you boast about it. Even though you do not look after them. You are a man. How are we brought up? Do you understand my question?

We are reared in failure. We are reared to do bad things. And be proud of it. And get lots of praises. Some of which go like this: “Ah, so-and-so is great!” So the younger ones listen. They hear this is a signal to do likewise. I know lots of people that do not like good people. They pull their noses up at them. As if to say, “Who do they think you are?” “We will show you.” And they show you. If I may say so, we like bad things. And think they are good. And good things we shun. There is somewhere in the Bible that talks about this. It is an old age thing. And it is a weakness that humanity has allowed itself to be a victim of. It is not a racial thing. It is universal. And is all over the world. You will find bad people everywhere. So will you find good ones. But the odds seem to be against good people. There are more bad people than good people, if I may say so. I don’t know why. Maybe it is easy to be bad than good. As I tried to show in isijolo. You try to do bad things to belong. You do not want to be an odd one out. To tell the truth, I don’t mind being an odd one out. As long as I have a purpose in life. If I fail, let it be. But let me have a purpose, and pursue it, I will belong. Stay positive.

Strand housing protest Strand residents marched to the local police station to hand a memorandum over to Executive Mayor Patricia de Lille. The memorandum contained residents’ grievances, including their concerns about the poor condition of the Lwandle Hostel where more than nine people are forced to share a toilet. Other grievances are that houses should be built in all informal settlements and that title deeds be issued for Greenfields residents who have not received it since occupation of their homes 10 years ago. Another major concern is the high incidence of accidents in Overwacht Road, and the request for speed calming measures like speed bumps. According to Road Accident Fund statistics eight children have been hit by cars on the road. “This was a much expected march because if you look at our area nothing is happening in terms of development,” said march convener Xolani Diniso. “The City of Cape Town cannot show a single programme it has come up with in the five years the DA has been in government.” Diniso says service delivery is poor and many residents have no proper toilets and sanitation. Councillor Jongidumo Maxheke did not join the march. “He took an individual political decision not to attend the march, although we did inform him. I don’t know whom he’s serving if he does not support us,” Diniso said. The memorandum was accepted by Phumlani Godlo, an official in De Lille’s office who promised to deliver it to the relevant people.

Godlo lashed out at a group of marchers for saying they address the needs of the “wrong” people. “You elected the councillor,” he said. “The councillor can be removed, so sort out your issues. It is misleading to say we are engaging with the wrong people when they were elected by you”. The mayor’s office was given 20 working days to respond. Zara Nicholson, spokesperson for Patricia de Lille, said the human settlements directorate will be responding to the memorandum in detail. “However, the City is currently busy with a ceiling retrofitting project in Lwandle where 400 ceilings will be done,” she said. “This project is in line with our redress programme aimed at correcting the wrongs of the past.” Nicholson said allocations for housing opportunities are done according to the City’s Housing Allocation Policy to ensure that all applicants on the Housing Need Database are treated fairly. She urged residents to register on the database to ensure they qualify and are in line for housing opportunities. In response to concerns on the Lwandle Hostel, she said: “The City recognises the need for upgrades and increased maintenance in many of the historic hostels. Following a visit to the Lwandle Hostel by City officials in September, we are looking at how we can assist the legitimate hostel dwellers with some general maintenance and basic service delivery.”

Sober up! And have an opinion I am sure we all witnessed the events of the past week or so: #Fees must fall. Some of us of the older generation had mixed feelings. I did not know what to make of this. I did not know whether to be for or against it. As the events unfolded we saw violence flare up although some kids were against it. They pleaded with their colleagues, “No violence! No violence!” Did they listen? No. They pelted the police with stones, burnt mobile toilets and set up roadblocks. They knew what they were there for. They were there to fight. Such is the nature of the revolution. I wonder what you made of all this. I am apolitical. I’m not good at politics. I’m too naive. Politics do not want a naive person. A naïve person thinks everyone is good. But not everyone is good. There are some in sheepskins. Beneath they are wolves. They will do anything to advance their interests. We have seen that great revolutionaries, who call themselves comrades, but live in the lap of capitalist luxury. They drive expensive cars. Live in suburbs. Their kids go to expensive schools.

‘Don’t be angry with those who caused fire,’ pastor says VELANI LUDIDI The Ngotsi Christ Ambassadors Church was burnt to the ground on 18 October in the fire that broke out in New Village, Nomzamo just after 21:00. The fire also razed 190 shacks and left 400 people homeless. There is conflicting information about the cause of the fire. Fire and Rescue Services’ spokesperson Liezl Moodie said the fire started when a cooking device fell over. Councillor Mbuyiselo Matha said a man reportedly set fire to another’s shack and ran away. The Ngotsi Christ Ambassadors Church was taken into new ownership three months ago. “I received a phone call about the fire, but when I arrived we couldn’t get anything out,” said Pastor Shepherd Menze. The church has to be built from scratch. Pastor Menze remains optimistic and thanked the local municipality for providing them with starter packs to start building the structure. They were forced to use material from some of the old burnt out sinks

as the church was big. Residents in the area started building their houses and moved on with lives. Some remain angry with the person accused of causing the fire. “Judging is not ours to do, the law is responsible for such things,” the pastor said, slamming any inclinations to lash back.

They are different from you and me. Look at Jonathan Moyo, the Minister of Higher Education in Zimbabwe. His daughter – may her soul rest in peace – was studying at UCT. Couldn’t she study in Zimbabwe? I bet she could not. Because universities in Zim are not good enough for Moyo. And his daughter could not study there. Let’s call a spade a spade. And let’s be angry if we can. Maybe this fees must fall movement will usher in new openness. We will talk about the things we have been afraid to talk about. But some guys are unhappy with this glasnost. They want to suppress it. These kids could usher in something new. We should not spoil it. And we should not allow spoilers to spoil it. It is something that has taken the country by storm. You can’t ignore it. Even if you want to, you can’t. People will ask your opinion on it. You may pretend to have no opinion. There are people like that. They hide behind a bottle. But they should be drawn out. You can pretend to be not there, while you are there. Sober up! And have an opinion. This country counts on you. And our children need you. Stay positive.

World Aids Day: Attitudes have changed, fortunately 1 December is recognised globally as World Aids Day. There was a time when the disease was dreaded, its mere mention causing shivers down the spines of many. Attitudes included denial from sufferers and family members alike. Fear, disdain and isolation towards victims was the norm at the start of this century. As the day approaches, Kasi Vision’s VELANI LUDIDI took to the streets of Lwandle to find out how perceptions and attitudes have changed...

YANGA MBONJENI: “Yes, I think today’s generation is more open about their status because they believe that if a person is more open about AIDS, it can also help boost their self-esteem and to deal with it more positively. It’s no longer a taboo subject, it has become easy to talk about and people hang out with people affected by the disease.

THEMBALETHU JACK: “The stigma is no longer there. I am a member of the street committee and I meet people affected by the disease and I encourage them to take care of themselves; “Go to the clinic”, I tell them. It’s so easy to talk about it, people don’t judge each other anymore and it’s not the end of the road once affected by the disease. Also, the nurses who do random visits make it easy for people to be able to accept and deal with the disease. We were all scared back in the days.

MAXABA MAQENGU: People are more open now than they were before. Years ago, you were rejected by your family; the ones who were supposed to be your source of strength. If a person told you they are positive back then, your attitude towards them would change and you’d distance yourself, but now we offer support and encourage those infected. The community doesn’t label them and friends no longer reject them. We have accepted it because acceptance seemed hard back in the days.

THEMBENI VITYANA: Things have changed from what they were before, we live and walk around freely with people affected by the disease. As a matter of fact, you can’t even tell the difference if someone has it or not. People take their treatments in front of us and are not ashamed because this is a people’s disease and we have accepted that it’s part of our lives. Being ignorant or not accepting the disease will only kill you. Back then a person used to have his or her own plate and spoon but now we eat together and even kiss any person with the disease.

MDISHI MTHIYA: Recently one of my family members died of the disease and we didn’t know until it was too late. We discovered that she had not been taking her tablets. People seldom talk about the disease, especially the youth; You just see your child becoming sick and you draw your own conclusions. It is on their deathbeds that they first admit. I don’t mind talking about it and helping anyone affected by HIV/Aids. I think they fear being rejected by their families, friends and the community. People choose faraway clinics to hide from people who may notice them in local clinics. We have been taught about the disease, but people still don’t seem to get it.

KANYI CEBO: The perceptions around the disease have changed X the attitude, knowledge, everything regarding the disease has changed compared to the way it was . People are now more open because they want to live longer. (They know that) keeping it inside only kills you, they can even ask others to go and collect their medicines from the clinic and not be ashamed. We do almost everything with people affected by the disease. People realised it was killing the nation, so they dealt with the stigma. Now people can live long, healthy lives because everyone talks about it. PHOTOS: VELANI LUDIDI

Police need help in locating stolen devices Sunday morning Lwandle police searched houses in Greenfields Khayalethu Street. The police were searching for stolen devices believed to be hidden in one of the houses in this street. A man who doesn’t wish to be named in the media claimed on Saturday night he was robbed of his laptop and IPad at his house in Somerset West. “They smashed the window of my car and took the things,” he lamented. He called the police who came and took fingerprints at the scene. The electronics were fitted with tracking devices and the tracker led the police to the area. The tracker works when the devices are on. “The IPad was switched on at 08:30 this morning so I got the location,” insisted the man. Police confirmed

this and rushed to the place, the devices were not found in any of the houses and were believed to have been switched off. “We didn’t know we live with thugs here who steal things and bring them here,” said an angry resident, who was hoping the devices would be found and the culprit shamed and arrested. “We as the community will investigate and deal with this. We can’t live with thugs.” The man is appealing to whomever has information to come forward, and is willing to offer a reward. He says some of his family pictures are on those devices and doesn’t want to lose such memories. Police said they will investigate and are also asking those with information to come forward.

Summer days are around the corner

This can only mean one thing: the ladies are updating their wardrobes and style. Kasi Vision asked a few kasi ladies about their clothing choices for the hot weather.

Shorts, jeans and vests are staple items in Mihlali Sogiba’s wardrobe during any season. “When I go looking for clothes I normally browse through what Price, Mr Choice Clothing and Legit have on offer,” she says.

Kefuoe Motebele says during summer she loves wearing dresses. “I just love dresses in summer, and I buy them at Mr Price and Identity depending where I find what I like,” she says.

“I like wearing shirts, sexy and funky clothes,” says Zoleka Alam, who shops for her clothes at Mr Price and Truworths. She adds that she loves pairing high heels with almost everything she wears.

Prison changed him VELANI LUDIDI Heavily tattooed with deep scars on parts of his body. Always carrying a pistol wherever he went. Shooting was just a hobby for him. Feared by most of the community members. He would chase you while people were watching and didn’t care hurting you. He made his own rules. This is the life Athini Manxiwana from Asanda Village used to live. The 27-year-old says he became involved with the wrong crowd while growing up and got influenced to do bad things. “I used to be a gangster, I was shooting a gun”. In 2005, when he was 17 years old, Athini was arrested for murdering two people and for the possession of an illegal firearm. Lwandle soccer teams rewarded by LSA Soccer players from five Lwandle primary schools were rewarded at a prize-giving ceremony held by the Lwandle Schools Association (LSA) in the Silukhanyo Primary School hall on Friday 30 October. The players, who are pupils at ACJ Pakade, Silukhanyo, Umnqophiso, Solomon Qatyana and Christmas Tinto Primary Schools, received medals and trophies for their prestigious achievements during the recent knock-out competition and soccer league hosted by the association. Teams from these five schools play against each other in the different age groups and then the winning teams in each of these divisions play in provincial and national tournaments, such as the Milo Cup and the Danone Cup. The knock-out competition, which took place in May, saw soccer teams made up of members of all ages and even girls participating. The competition was sponsored by the headmaster of one of the primary schools, who preferred to remain anonymous. The winners of the knock-out competition in their respective age categories are: the under-10 team of Solomon Qatyana; under-12 and under-13 and over teams of Umnqophiso; and the Silukhanyo girl’s team. The LSA was started in March last year by teachers Sibongile Bubesi from Silukhanyo Primary School and Sandile Macala from Umnqophiso Primary School, for soccer development at township schools. The LSA is, however, experiencing some challenges, such as too few local fields to play matches on and the unavailability of fields, and transporting players from one township to the other. Businesses able to assist may contact Sibongile Bubesi on 078 318 6893.

Ketso Mfesane received the trophy for the best player of the year. Chairman of the Lwandle Schools Association Sibongile Bubesi and guest speaker Mr Zondani of the Khayelitsha Schools Football Association congratulated Mfesane.

The under-13 and over team of Umnqophiso Primary School was the winner in its division of the knockout competition. The team was awarded with medals and a trophy.

The Silukhanyo girls soccer team was placed first in its division of the knockout competition.
