Saving water has been a way of life before the drought A shortage of water and low dam levels across the country have led to the implementation of water restrictions by the City of Cape Town from Thursday 1 Jan-
uary. Residents have been forced to devise plans to save water. Kasi Vision took to the streets to poll readers on the measures they have put in place.
Khotso Mokoena: “I try not to bath twice a day and make sure there are no leaks at home. We have a bucket where we get water from, instead of using the tap. We wash hands at a basin. I have always saved water and used it sparingly, even before the drought. My sister works at the Department of Water and Sanitation, so she always asks us to use water wisely.”
Zanele Mkrakraza: “We pour water from the tap into two 20 F buckets and use the water from the buckets; that way we won’t waste water as we pay attention to the amount of water we use when brushing teeth or washing hands. We have changed the water pressure on our toilet tap to save water when flushing and we only flush when necessary. We have been doing this before the water restrictions.”
Lulama Ntulini: “I make sure I close the tap after using it and have placed a bowl for hand washing at home. We usually use hand sanitiser to wash our hands. I always encourage my children to save water. This drought is really affecting people in South Africa. To be honest, we didn’t save water before, but we have been doing so since this crisis. I encourage others to do so too.”
Jackson Doncabe: “We don’t use the tap; we use water from the bucket at home. I try to not use too much water when cooking, brushing teeth and washing. I report leaking taps and pipes around the house. I drink juice instead of water and eat veggies and fruit which contain water. I saved water before the water restrictions.”
Sakhile Sophazi: “My brother and I use the same bath water to save water. I don’t drink tea and I don’t use running water when I brush my teeth or wash my hands. We also have a tank at the house which captures rain water. We saved water before the drought, as my mom – a teacher – has always encouraged us to do so.”
Phumlani Mkhiva: “When I brush my teeth, I use a mug filled with water, as that doesn’t waste too much water. I make sure there are no leaking pipes or taps, and I flush only when necessary. I live alone and don’t waste too much water. At school, we were taught ways of saving water and I have always saved water.”

Two women robbed and raped in Lwandle Mzoxolo Gqomo (22) fell through a roof at his home in Asanda Village and hurt his left leg and waist on January 16. PHOTOS: MZWANELE MKALIPI
Man (22) falls through roof, hurts waist MZWANELE MKALIPI A 22-year-old young man is recovering at home after falling from the top of a roof and injured his waist. Mzoxolo Gqomo from Asanda Village, Strand fell inside the house when he tried to fix a shaking roof after heavy blowing winds two Saturdays ago. Now, using crutches to move around the house, Gqomo’s family complained that the houses built by Asla Construction in 2002/2003 have been giving them trouble. The houses’ roofs are made of asbestos and the family says whenever it is windy they are worried about the roof that seems can be blown away anytime. The family has now improvised and covered the roofing with a mat as they can’t sleep while it is wide open! Gqomo’s father, Moses Gqomo, told Kasi Vision he was at work when the terrible incident occurred. “I’m told it was very windy on that night and the roof was shaking as it always does during windy days. My son climbed on top of the roof to try and put bricks on it so it can’t be blown away by the wind. In no time my son fell right through the asbestos,” he said. “After he hurt himself he could not move or do anything. He then had to be rushed to Hottentots-Holland hospital for assistance. This asbestos roof needs to be changed because it is very dangerous. It is not only us complaining about the asbestos, but almost everyone in this area,”
said Gqomo. Mzoxolo told Kasi Vision it was around 19:00 on the day when he climbed to try and fix the roof to only see himself on the floor in no time. “I found myself in great pain on the floor. I could not move as my waist and left leg were injured. When I was finally taken by an ambulance to hospital I later found out that I had fractured bones in my waist and my leg,” he said, seated on his bed at home. Mzoxolo said he hoped the “entire roof could be changed to zinc” as the “asbestos is dilapidated”. Xolani Soziwa, South African Civics Organisation (Sanco) organiser in the area said they were planning a march to raise awareness about the houses in the area. “To this day we still don’t know what was the planning to put asbestos roofs in these houses. When you build a house you want to do that once and not keep on fixing it every now and then. Some of these houses have cracks, shaking roofs and we are in deep trouble,” said Soziwa. Tony Beyleveldt, director of Asla Construction, told Kasi Vision he will visit the house on Wednesday for investigation. Beyleveldt confirmed that the house was built by Asla Construction. “(The) Erf 25315 was handed over to the beneficiary on 13 May 2004. The roofs are not made of asbestos. It is made of nutec. Nutec was used on insistence of community leaders at the time,” he said, adding “we have fulfilled our contractual obligations almost 11 years ago”.
Children to be wary of strangers Police have issued a warning against human trafficking. A statement by Lwandle Police says children are used for prostitution and as drug runners, and that parents should at all times know where their children are. If you don’t know where your child is, report it to the police immediately. There is no waiting period for reporting a missing or lost child.
A group of suspected rapists are terrorising women in Lwandle. The men also rob their victims. Police spokesperson Sergeant Mthokozisi Gama said two incidents in Asanda Village were recently reported, the first on 16 January and the other on 21 January. According to Gama, a 29-year-old woman was accosted by two men when her work transport dropped her off at her home in Nombula Street at 03:30. “She screamed and ran into her house,” Gama related. He said the woman woke up later when she heard noise at the window. “Her door was suddenly kicked open and two suspects went into the house, demanding money, which she gave to them,” Gama said. He said both suspects raped the woman and then fled from the scene. In the second incident in Howard Street, three men entered the house of a woman, aged 19, at 01:30 when she was asleep.

Inform your children not to speak to strangers and not to allow strangers to enter their homes. They must immediately report any such attempts by strangers. Children also need to know they should not accept any gifts or sweets from anyone they do not know, as this creates an opportunity for criminal activity that could lead to your child being abducted for human trafficking.

Two of the men had firearms and the third was armed with a knife. Gama says the men held the woman at gunpoint and demanded money, which she handed over. “When one suspect demanded sex from the woman she refused, and then he assaulted and raped her.” Gama said the woman realised her phone was missing after the men had left. Two cases of house robbery and rape were opened. Police warn residents to be more vigilant at all times and to install security gates to prevent break-ins and also request that drivers who drop women off at home ensure they are safe inside their homes before driving off. A reward is offered for anyone with information that may aid the investigation. They can contact the Lwandle Police detective head, Captain Andries Geldenhuys, on 021 845 2060 or 082 469 7719.

Masikhule enhances quality of Early Childhood Development “Adult education, empowering women and Early Childhood Development (ECD) are crucial to the upliftment and transformation of marginalised and at-risk communities.” So says Sandy Immelman, communications officer for Masikhule, an organisation dedicated to these strategic areas since 2005. Immelman said Masikhule offers free courses in Basic ECD, Advanced ECD and Business Management for ECD Principals as well as First 1000 Days Workshops to women from informal settlements around the Helderberg. She says what really sets Masikhule’s intervention apart from other agencies’ is its system of mentoring those it has trained “to ensure successful implementation of their programmes” in their environment. Immelman said in 2015 the organisation developed an initiative to assess four to six-yearolds at Masikhule-mentored ECD centres on an
annual basis. “The main objective was to assess the children’s general development (physical, fine and gross motor functions, perceptual skills, school readiness, early literacy and numeracy, and so on). Teachers and principals are then informed of the findings, which highlight the effectiveness of their programmes, and parents are informed accordingly. Immelman says Masikhule is implementing a project that offers Teaching Enrichment Workshops throughout the year for pre-school teachers and principals. “The purpose is to ensure disadvantaged children enter formal schooling more school-ready in all vital areas of development,” she said. For more information on Masikhule and how to access the services it has on offer, visit www.masikhule.org.

A group of Lwandle residents, hoping to get their community to lead a healthy lifestyle, established the Siyazama Food Gardening Project. Mcebisi Malangeni, a Siyanyanzela resident, initiated the project last June. He plants vegetables and makes a living by selling it at affordable prices in his community, including Asanda Village, Nomzamo, Lwandle and Greenfields. As time passed, his peers saw gardening as an option to keep themselves busy and to get to know each other. A gardening project would help them put food on their tables and on those of other members of their community. “Malangeni, my neighbour told me he plants vegetables to help the community and make living a for himself, as he was unemployed,” said Ellen Ntlali who eventually also joined the project. Siyazama Food Gardening Project mem-
bers told Kasi Vision about how they became part of the project, and five of them indicated they were quite keen to start one themselves, but didn’t quite know where to begin. “I was impressed when Malangeni showed me the garden and immediately joined the project”, said Simthembile Makhwenkwana. Zola Bawana said he was always interested in being involved in community gardening. Ntlali got Melikhaya Bhekameva (23) involved as marketing manager for the project. He also joined the rest of the men when they planted the crop. The project also gives back to the community by sponsoring food for the sick. The Siyazama Food Gardening Project currently has the garden in the Siyanyanzela informal settlement only, but Malangeni hopes to expand the project when the project acquires land at a local school. This, he said, would also enable it to assist childrens’ homes in the community.

TEAM HAS MANY GOALS TO ACHIEVE
Two for joy back in training VELANI LUDIDI The new season is about to kick off and Helderberg LFA league champions, Two For Joy FC, are back at training. The team almost won everything on offer last season, winning the league, the Madikizela Cup, Easter Tournament and the top 8. They finished the league unbeaten and clinched the title with five games to go and hold the record of most points in a season (84 points). It was the first time the team won the league since its inception. The team is owned by the business mogul, and Mtata Lounge owner, Lwandile Solontsi. “Its good to be back and the team members are in high spirits,” said senior player Thembile Jimlongo. “We want to win everything this year. I personally want to remain consistent with my game and lead the youngsters by example.” After winning the league, Two For Joy went on to play-offs and tried to win them so they could qualify for the AB Motsepe League. They played against top teams around the Western Cape and played very well in the first round without any loss. Their loss came in the final. “It was sad to lose in the play-offs as we had a chance to become the first team in Lwandle to qualify or win the play-offs. But we learnt a lot from that experience and fans can expect a more improved performance from us,” said the team’s captain, Mlulameli ‘Simba’ Gamndana. Two For Joy has made one signing so far, a Ghananian striker, Bismark Ampofo, and are said to be looking for more signings to improve the team.

Two For Joy coach, Masonwabe Tshanyela, said they want to defend all the trophies they won last season and use the experience from the play-offs to improve their game.
“To play well and not score goals is not important. That’s one lesson we learnt from the playoffs. We played well but got frustrated when things were not coming our way. “Now we will play a few friendly games and see where we are as a team and take it from
