PUBLISHER’S NOTE Sometimes you just have to look at the glass as half full, even when it’s probably closer to a quarter full. It would be very easy to view the glass as half empty this year. As I write this, we are in the middle of the most active hurricane season of my lifetime, and it’s not even the biggest concern affecting us at the moment. This is how much of a whirlwind 2020 has been – next to everything we’ve been through, major hurricanes seem like minor concerns. So how can you look at the glass as half full in a year like this? Easy. Just look up from the glass and look around you. The natural beauty, comfortable climate, friendly people and amazing restaurants of the Lowcountry have a unique way of coming together to take the edge off of life a little bit. It’s why people come here again and again to visit, and why residents always seem so relaxed. It’s a daily rejuvenation, and a great way to forget about whether that glass is full or empty. That optimism got us through a lot this year, as we enjoyed a somewhat less sheltered pandemic as the rest of the country did. While they were hunkered down, we were able to go to the beach, grab some take-out and enjoy socially distanced company with friends. I truly believe being able to live that much of a “normal” life during all this kept our community healthier and happier. That’s not to say there weren’t tribulations. Our local restaurants, especially, found themselves needing to adapt on the fly to survive. First it took the form of changing their regular service, converting menus to work for a carry-out and curbside customer base and rearranging physical space. It’s a testament to our island’s culinary creativity that even fine-dining establishments were able to make their fare work while trading eye-catching plating for a Styrofoam box. And then came reopening, and the rules and restrictions that followed. Again, our restaurants got creative, opening up entirely new al fresco dining experiences on sidewalks and in parking lots as they restricted indoor seating. We’ve come through the worst of it, and our restaurants have passed the test with flying colors. To those of us who rely on them for some much-needed normalcy, their efforts have made a world of difference. It’s been a hard battle for all of us, but better times lie ahead. Looking forward to 2021, I can only see relief and prosperity. We can all do our part to make that happen by supporting local businesses, showing understanding toward our waitstaff as they hurdle new regulations and being generous with our tips. And, as we head into 2021, we can all make sure we see the glass as half full. David Mudwilder Publisher

The Market Cafe
Michael Anthony’s introduces more than just a sister restaurant. This is an entirely new concept in Italian dining. BY BARRY KAUFMAN
•
PHOTOS BY ROB KAUFMAN
To fully understand the dynamic between Michael Anthony’s and The Market Cafe, you have to look at the dynamic between siblings.
Seen through this lens, Michael Anthony’s is the more established, older sibling. Its reputation for fine Italian dining spans the globe, with a hungry and loyal clientele going back decades. On the strength of its refined menu and its legendary cooking school it has set the bar for the dining experience on Hilton Head Island and established itself as a true icon of our island’s culinary scene. The Market Cafe, opened just this year next door, is the rebellious younger sibling in this metaphor. Possessed of the same passion for authentic Italian ingredients and the same drive to lend each dish the highest quality possible, the DNA it shares with its more storied sister restaurant is clear. Where it differs is in its intriguing maverick concept – part wine bar, part restaurant and part gourmet Italian market, it’s clear that the difference in experience is deliberate. “It’s a little more non-traditional over here,” said GM Ian Mason. “We wanted this common thread of high-end ingredients, high quality food and topnotch service to run through all of our concepts, but we wanted this very different from next door.” Let’s start with the market, the initial facet of the concept rolled out earlier this year. As The Market 12
TASTEOFHILTONHEAD.COM
Cafe first opened during the take-out days of early 2020, the emphasis first was on the dry goods and grab-and-go fare that line two walls. To one side, wireframe shelves burst with authentic Italian pastas, sauces and ingredients you won’t find anywhere else. Along one wall, a set of coolers house takeout containers of gourmet Italian dishes, artisan cheeses and hand-made pasta for you to create your own at home. With that concept firmly perfected, it was time to launch The Market Cafe as a restaurant. And here we see the rebellious streak that defines the restaurant truly take form. “It’s the same quality of food you’d find at our sister restaurant, but we’re using a little more ‘out there’ ingredients,” said Mason. “You would never see an Italian chef put 16 ingredients on a plate, but these guys have really set themselves loose.” These guys would be the two accomplished chefs in the back, Patrick Neary and Robby Colson. And what they’ve been able to accomplish by casting off the more restrictive traditions of Italian cuisine is extraordinary. Across a menu of tapas-style small plate dishes, categorized in pasta and personal pizzas with a few apps that run the gamut, you see inspiration at every dish. The spaghetti neri, dyed with cuttlefish ink to an alluring ebony, the fussilloni, created with dried porcini mushrooms folded right into the
dough, and pizzas created with live yeast for a mouthwatering crust. “It takes incredible effort to find live yeast, but it makes our pizza crust the best around. And we’re using the ingredients in the case as toppings, so you’re getting an incredibly highend pizza,” said Mason. “And every pasta here is completely custom… it’s an incredible combination of custom cuts. You can’t do that in a 135-seat restaurant because each of these needs to be done by hand.” Each of these two chefs have stepped into their new roles as culinary mavericks. Neery had previously been the pasta chef at Michael Anthony’s, but at The Market Cafe he’s pushing the boundaries and exhibiting an ingenious playfulness with pasta dishes. And Colson has put his skills as a licensed forager to use, rooting through the woods of Ridgeland for chanterelles, cauliflower mushrooms and lion’s mane for nightly specials. “There are things here you’re not going to find anywhere else,” said Mason. “So far, we haven’t had a single disappointed customer. I’m so proud of this concept and the way it ties into the whole experience.” And one crucial part of the renegade Market Cafe experience is the wine list. In the same way the dishes take a somewhat more casual approach centered on novel ingredients, the wine list is approachable yet endlessly exotic. You won’t find anything more than $10 a glass, but you will find flavors you might not be expecting and may have never experienced. “It’s an esoteric wine list,” said Mason. “It’s not as
expensive per glass, but it offers outsized quality.” What exactly is a nerello mascalese? You’re only gambling $10 to find out if you love it (and really, the odds are stacked in your favor that you will). Representing different aspects of Italian cuisine, the wine list at The Market Cafe challenges you to discover each region and expand your palette. And if you don’t see something you like, the perks of sisterhood mean you can still order from Michael Anthony’s bar next door and have it brought over. And while you might expect a certain amount of sibling rivalry when the rebellious younger sister restaurant opens up, the focus here is on family. The addition of The Market Cafe only enhances the full Michael Anthony’s experience. “You can come to Michael Anthony’s one day and enjoy a classic Italian dinner, you can come back for the cooking school the next day and then next day bring the whole family to The Market Cafe and order a bunch of stuff for the table,” said Mason. “It’s pretty easy to spend three days here.” Welcome to the family. That goes for this rebellious sister restaurant and to anyone who is ready to make this intriguing new concept their go-to for dinner or lunch.

PEARLS OF WISDOM
THE PEARL
continues to raise Bluffton’s culinary profile. BY BARRY KAUFMAN
•
There was a time when the commonly held wisdom stated that Bluffton was not a town for fine dining. This sleepy river town was for blue collar folks with blue collar tastes, and no appetite for elevated cuisine. Happily, that commonly held wisdom has been proven almost laughably wrong. Up and down Calhoun Street, and from one end of May River Road to the other, an epicurean revolution has been slowly changing the face of Bluffton. Those blue-collar folks have welcomed new neighbors from Palmetto Bluff to the gated communities north of Fording Island Rd., making room at the table for fine dining of every kind. And The Pearl was one of those restaurants that led the way. From a restored old building on Calhoun Street, they opened their doors nearly five years ago to a Bluffton that was still in transition. Owner Alex Nightingale, who’d found 16
TASTEOFHILTONHEAD.COM

extraordinary success on Hilton Head Island with Ela’s, remembers the differences between his two restaurants that immediately stood out. “Comparing it to Ela’s, there you have a week to get in front of new clients. Over 10 years we’ve established great clientele, but sometimes you only see them twice a year,” he said. “Out here it’s extremely local. You have to perfect it more because that word of mouth is crucial.” Bluffton is, after all, a small town even with its recent growth. Support from locals is crucial to the survival of any restaurant, much less one that is introducing elevated cuisine to a town more accustomed to casual dining. “You constantly have to be on your game. It’s a small town and that’s how we thrive,” he said. “It’s a matter of constantly being aware of the fact that everything has to be consistent.”
Fortunately, that ever-vigilant approach to the customer experience paid off. Locals of all stripes embraced The Pearl as a key ingredient in the Bluffton lifestyle, drawn by its multi-faceted experience. A meal at The Pearl is more than just your dish – it comes in the elegant Lowcountry luxe décor of the space itself, the commitment to getting every recipe perfect, every cocktail just right, and it comes from the familiar faces who greet you with every visit. “We’re pretty proud of the fact that we’ve been able to maintain a lot of our staff,” said Nightingale. “We have people in the kitchen and people on the floor who have been with us since day one… that helps, creating that familiarity.” One somewhat new face amid the staff of long-time employees is head chef Michael Hill. New because he just started his tenure as head chef in January, but only somewhat new because he’d already served as sous chef for two years prior. “He’s definitely an up-and-coming big player in the culinary field,” said Nightingale of his new head chef. “His creativity and his work ethic are unbelievable.” That work ethic has definitely been put to the test, with Hill’s tenure coming just before the pandemic put every restaurant in the country into damage control mode. “As an owner, you worry about your chef getting burned out, but he’s shown he can handle it. During those hard eight weeks of COVID, it was just him and I every single night for eight weeks straight,” said Nightingale. “He didn’t flinch. He was there. That meant a lot to me.” Also meaningful to Nightingale was the love The Pearl received from his regulars throughout the pandemic. “During March and April, we felt the support from locals,” he said. “The Reed Group came in and bought a bunch of gift certificates one night. It’s a community. That’s what my wife and I love about being out here.” And now, with the lockdowns a distant memory, the work has begun to do what the team at The Pearl has always done: keep making a high-quality experience even more memorable. “Every year, it keeps going up. That experience – what they customer sees, what they smell what the hear… we’re always trying to keep listening and give the customer what they want,” said Nightingale. And what does the customer want? “To be taken care of,” said Nightingale. “They want that initial cocktail, then they want to move to that bottle of wine and then they want that fresh fish or the big juicy steak. And some people just want to catch up with their server.” They also want more of their favorite restaurant, with The Pearl
moving its schedule to open seven nights a week based on customer feedback. “We were doing lunch for a while, but we got down to our bread and butter, which is dinner,” he said. “That’s definitely helped us over the last year.” Ultimately, The Pearl’s lasting appeal comes down to the experience. It’s what helped it as an early pioneer in bringing fine dining to Bluffton, it’s what has helped it grow a loyal customer base and it is what will help it continue to fine-tune the restaurant Bluffton has come to embrace. “We all have a passion for The Pearl,” said Nightingale. “I don’t think any of us will ever really be satisfied, because we just want to take everything to the next level.” To find out more, visit thepearlbluffton.com.

Are You Experienced?
The Lowcountry’s fastest-growing foodie community is taking Facebook into the kitchen. BY BARRY KAUFMAN
•
If you’ve been on Facebook at all lately, you know that this is a rough time to be on Facebook. Endless political posts, raging debates over masks and rampant negativity have made the site a battleground, one where even the most innocuous post can turn into a flashpoint with a single comment. And then there’s the Bluffton/Hilton Head Food Experience. Started in March of 2019, the group is the rarest of things in the modern world – a community that offers nothing but positivity. “This group is bringing a lot of people together, especially now that there are a lot of people at home,” said the group’s founder, Tony Russo. Inspired by a similar group he was a part of, the Brooklyn Food Experience, Russo opened the Bluffton/Hilton Head Food Experience with the simple goal of giving foodies a place to share their favorite dishes and restaurants. It was slow going at first. Largely extending invites to his circle of friends, the self-professed foodie and New York native ended his first week with around 20 members. He began beating the bushes, passing the word around to area restaurants, but was by and large ignored. Now, with just under 3,300 members as of this writing, the community he’s created includes some of the biggest names in area restaurants. It also helped that his group began gaining traction right as the pandemic hit, when restaurants needed that extra connection to their customers. “Now, with all that going on and restaurants taking a beating, they go on our group and post. When I first started this, advertising was not allowed. Now, I’m allowing it,” said Russo. While not really advertising in the classical sense, being members in the group did allow restaurateurs to show off some of 22

their latest dishes plus communicate directly with their customers. “Now they can see what people are saying about them.” And overwhelmingly, those responses are positive. The group has grown to the point where Russo added several moderators, all there to keep the good vibes front and center. “If somebody says something negative about a restaurant, I’ll immediately take that down,” he said. “I tell members, if you have something to say, say it to the manager. Don’t post it here.” That positivity extends to the amateur chefs who show off their latest culinary creations on the page as well. Members routinely post photos of their meals, with comments almost universally offering encouragement and praise. Something you don’t find a lot of on Facebook these days. Along with photos from amateur and pro foodies, the big draw is Russo’s regular chopped challenges, where he tasks members with using specific (and often outlandish) ingredients in a dish, ranging from Chef Boyardee pasta to Spam. The winner of the Spam challenge, as an example, was Tracy Dietrich, a sous chef for The Sea Pines Resort who created “Mini Polenta Cornbread Muffins with Sage Wild Rice Spam Meatballs and a Welch’s Concord Grape Gastrique.” Ultimately, the goal of the group was to create a community, one where the Lowcountry’s foodies could share their experience in the kitchen with other members and with some of the area’s renowned chefs. “I’m not making any money off of this, I just enjoy seeing people enjoy the site, that’s basically it,” said Russo. THE NEW HOTNESS
Ring Stinger Pepper Co. blends fire and flavor into the island’s newest taste sensation. BY BARRY KAUFMAN
•
The metaphorical seeds of the Ring Stinger Pepper Company were planted one New Year’s Eve a few years ago, when founder Chris Roach found himself at an impasse. A long-time employee of Michael Anthony’s, he was staring down another New Year’s Eve spent running the F&B gauntlet. “That’s the one day of the year that’s insane in the restaurant business. The money’s great, but you’re on your feet for 12 hours straight at a minimum,” he said. Having survived an accident 12 years prior that left him physically unable to work in the kitchen, he’d transitioned to front of house. On that New Year’s Eve, the toll from his injuries and the 28

stress of food and beverage life came to a boil. “I couldn’t get out of my car. I just couldn’t muster the energy… I had one of those really big moments where I asked myself, ‘How long can you continue to do this?’” The metaphorical seeds were planted. The literal seeds, meanwhile, were already bearing fruit at a tiny plot Roach maintained at the co-op farm inside Port Royal Plantation. “I had so many peppers I couldn’t get rid of them,” he said. What he couldn’t give away, he turned into hot sauces bursting with flavors of onions, garlic, tomatoes, and a global array of exotic spices. “My friends had been telling me, ‘You know, you
could sell this. You can’t buy sauce like this in a store.’ It was always one of those back-of-the-head thoughts,” he said. In that moment, with Roach frozen in the seat of his car, Ring Stinger Pepper Co. moved from a vague ambition to the center of a dream. “I set this five-year goal to create a company, start small, and then build it so in five years it’s my primary source of income so I could walk away from F&B.” He started small, even turning down an offer early on to put his sauces in 480 stores in New York in exchange for a share in his company. “I know I can sell my product. I know where everything in the bottle came from and the fertilizer used on that plant. I don’t think it would necessarily sell itself sitting on a shelf in Buffalo with three million other sauces,” he said. They didn’t stay small. For the first month, selling his sauces through his website, he was selling out every batch within five minutes. Even after scaling up, growing beyond the plot in Port Royal to partner farms from Hilton Head to St. Helena, Ring Stinger Pepper Company sauces are in huge demand. Beyond the website, he’s begun supplying sauces for Tio’s Latin American Kitchen. “I can only give them five-gallon batches, and they are willing to accept that, which is crazy for a restaurant,” he said. The secret to his success lies in the blend of culinary acumen and scientific geekery Roach brings to the table. “I’ve been a science fair nerd my whole life, so I’ve looked at this like a fun science project,” he said. His lab rat side handles the breeding and raising of the peppers, working with other growers to create the ultimate peppers. Then, the chef in him comes out, taking those peppers in delicious directions. Whether it’s the Jamaican influence of the Dat Jerk Boi, the strawberry and pineapple notes of the Tropikillya or the garlicky fury of the Carolina Reaper-based Carini’s Revenge, each sauce is designed to do far more than just hurt. “We’re trying to create flavor profile that hits the entire mouth instead of just focusing on burning the tongue,” he said. “We’re trying to highlight and lift flavors. I don’t want to make your meal spicy I want to enhance the flavors.” To get your hands on a bottle, go to the website ringstingerpepper.com.

Well, Mother Nature, you have our attention now. Between pandemics, masks, murder hornets, and homeschooling I find myself wondering “what’s next” regularly throughout the days and weeks. Remember your new year’s resolution? I had something very deep and profound about 2020 being the year of clear vision, focused on goals, blah & blah & blah. In retrospect (through the crystal clear lens of hindsight) 2020 has been anything but deep, profound, or focused. It has felt like hurtling down the side of a mountain. On a bike. Without a helmet. With a mask that has slipped from covering my mouth & nose to covering my eyes. I wanted to emerge from quarantine transformed. Now I just want to emerge intact. There were days when we cooked as a family. And days where we ate cereal without milk for dinner. Days where we rode bikes and took the dogs on long beach walks. And days where we binge-watched movies. I hope that however you have survived 2020 so far that you have hope for brighter days ahead, and that you have had something to cherish during this time. I recently took a yoga class from my favorite yogi here on the island and she said something that resonated deeply with me. “The benefits of yoga are cumulative.” -Kaitlen Groetzinger I have repeated that over and over since her class, and it fits so many different situations. The benefits of eating whole foods are cumulative. The benefits of regular exercise are cumulative. The benefits of drinking water are cumulative. Bottom line: the benefits of your habits are cumulative. They add up to a life that is lived fully. Feeling free in your body. Feeling confident in your abilities. Feeling connected to your choices and goals. And it answered the questions many of us have about how we continue to live connected in a world that is so weird right now. Bottom line: your habits will sustain you. If you have slipped from your habits of wellness the great news is that you can restart right now. Today. At this moment. The accumulation of benefits can start anytime you choose. Let’s start with food. Here are three recipes you can probably make right now to create a well-balanced day of eating.
Breakfast
2 whole eggs, 1 egg white, 2 slices of Dave’s Killer Bread, 2 avo slices, ½ medium banana.
Morning Snack
Black Magic Power Smoothie: Blend 8 ounces black coffee, 1 pkt. chocolate protein powder (ask me for my favorite brand), 1⁄2 tsp. cinnamon, 1⁄2 tbsp. coconut oil, 1 cup of ice cubes until smooth.
Dinner
Stuffed Avocado Ingredients 1⁄2 medium avocado 3 ounces cooked shredded chicken 2 tbsp. plain greek yogurt 1 tbsp. Dijon mustard Ground black pepper to taste Slice avocado in half and remove pit. Set aside. Mix shredded chicken, yogurt, mustard, and pepper together. Stuff mixture into the avocado. So, wherever 2020 has left you know that you can take charge of your habits again starting right now. The benefits will be cumulative. 25TH ANNIVERSARY
Gullah Celebration BY ALLYSON JONES
Throughout the month of February, the Native Island Business & Community Affairs Association, Inc. (NIBCAA) hosts the 25th Annual Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration to honor and preserve the traditions of the local Gullah population and their descendants. Centuries before becoming a famed tourist destination, Hilton Head Island was home to more than 20 working plantations producing Sea Island Cotton, rice, indigo, sugar cane and other crops. Wealthy plantation owners tended to live on the mainland to avoid illnesses like malaria, leaving their overseers and slaves isolated on the barrier islands where they were able to maintain many aspects of their African heritage. The South Carolina Lowcountry is similar in climate to Sierra Leone and West Africans from this country were highly prized for their skills in rice cultivation and basketry. Sweetgrass Baskets, now South Carolina’s State Handicraft, were originally used for rice winnowing and to hold seafood, vegetables and other crops. On November 7, 1861, the Civil War Battle of Port Royal took place just off the 38
TASTEOFHILTONHEAD.COM
coast. After the attack, Confederate forces retreated inland and the Union Army established the Headquarters for the Department of the South on Hilton Head. Hundreds of abandoned and escaped slaves, called “contrabands of war,” made their way to the Island in search of freedom and protection. Before the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, Mitchelville, the nation’s first freedman’s community was established in 1862, near Drayton Plantation. After large-scale military occupation of
the Island ended, Hilton Head residents were once again left in relative isolation living off the land and the sea until a bridge was built in the 1950s. Gullah is the name used to describe the Native Islanders’ unique language, arts, crafts, spiritual practices, music, foodways and culture. Established in 1996, the Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration was designed to create economic development opportunities for minority business owners and develop cultural tourism during a traditionally slow season. Over the years, the celebration has expanded into a monthlong series of events filled with art exhibitions, gospel concerts, a Gullah Market, food tastings featuring authentic Gullah dishes such as okra gumbo, conch stew, fried or stewed oysters and shrimp, chargrilled chicken and ribs, as well as cooking classes, storytelling, traditional church services, a Freedom Day commemoration and more. According to Marketing Director Courtney Young, whose father’s family has lived on Hilton Head Island for six generations, the biggest misperception
about Gullah is that the culture is dying out. “It’s not dying,” she declares. “It’s evolving. I’m a Gullah woman. I don’t live on Hilton Head, but I bring the Gullah culture to wherever I go. It’s the same for many people.” Like the sea island culture it showcases, the 25th Annual Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration will continue to evolve and adapt with many fan favorites – such as the Arts, Crafts and Food Expo – going virtual in 2021. Since social distancing guidelines can be maintained, the Arts Ob We People Exhibition & Sale in the Art League Gallery at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, as well as the Opening Party in the same location, will still be held in-person. “There are people who travel from all over the world just for this,” Young notes. “It may be a little different this year, but a good time, nonetheless.” “Hilton Head is a beautiful place,” she continues. “You have to have a special appreciation for it, there’s not a lot of glitz and glam. You come and fall in love with what is at its core. Gullah culture is Hilton Head. You can’t have Hilton Head without the Gullah culture. It is the soul of the Island.” Tickets for the 25th Annual Hilton Head Gullah Celebration go on sale in November. Visit GullahCelebration.com for details. TASTEOFHILTONHEAD.COM

PARK PLAZA CINEMA BY TAYLOR KENT
At Park Plaza Cinema on Hilton Head Island, there is a special clip that customers view before their film begins. Following the path of a young girl alone and far from where she came from, the introductory snippet shows the girl discovering a newfound haven and a safe space in an unlikely place: a movie theatre. The touching story is a true one, that of Lucie Sigouin Mann, who owns the theatre along with her husband, Larry. A French Canadian, Lucie moved to the United States alone at age 23. Self-described “pioneers” with their approach to the business, Lucie and Larry Mann have gone above and beyond to create an entire experience for moviegoers that makes the cinema feel like home. It was ten years ago in July when the Manns purchased the theatre from their friends. Lucie an architect and Larry a builder, the recession had left them in search of another plan. They had never considered owning and running a movie theatre, but they jumped in head first. Originally, their main objective with the space was simply to make an environment that they could enjoy together. It quickly became obvious, however, that they weren’t the only ones.
•
PHOTOS BY ROB KAUFMAN
As Lucie explained, “turns out, everyone liked it”, which she and Larry saw as a blessing. With the couple learning as they went along, Lucie and Larry began to experiment with innovative ideas and decisions. Besides being a “mom and pop”, family owned theatre, Park Plaza Cinema stands out for a number of reasons. To begin, their food and beverage menu is impressively extensive. A wide range of choices are available on their cafe and lounge menu, from homemade flatbreads to black bean burgers to quesadillas to bratwurst dogs. As far as drinks, guests can indulge in wine, beer, champagne, or even a cocktail. There are vegan options and luxuries such as gourmet coffee and locally made ice cream. With such a vast menu, Lucie was sure to include offerings to appeal to everyone. The cinema also has traditional snacks and candy, of course, and popcorn that was voted best on Hilton Head. Park Plaza Cinema is dog friendly, as well. Guests are often greeted at the door by Antionette and Abileene, Lucie and Larry’s four legged babies. Moviegoers at Park Plaza are welcome to bring their own dogs, as well, as long as
they’re under 20 pounds. As business owners, Lucie and Larry are openminded and receptive to different ideas. Park Plaza is ever evolving and pushing the boundaries to provide for their customers. With the cinema, the Manns believe in trying new things. As Lucie puts it, “what works, you keep, and what doesn’t, you don’t use”. Undoubtedly, it’s this approach that allowed for Park Plaza Cinema to be voted “Coolest Movie Theatre in South Carolina” by Cosmopolitan magazine. At Park Plaza, Lucie and Larry Mann strive to be out of the ordinary. They have set their business apart and made Park Plaza a favorite for both locals and tourists alike. Well-respected amongst the community, Lucie and Larry succeeded in doing exactly what they sought out to do. Park Plaza Cinema is truly a home for everyone. TASTEOFHILTONHEAD.COM

Toys for Cops BY ALLYSON JONES
‘Tis the season for giving and the Frosty Frog Café continues a holiday tradition with its Toys for Cops Charity Golf Tournament on Wednesday, December 2, at Palmetto Hall. Lifelong Lowcountry resident and current Frosty Frog employee Andrew Kelly brought a background in event management from the Wild Wing Café and a passion for giving back to create this golf tournament, now in its 6th year. Originally a Toys for Tots event, four years ago the event partnered with Deputy Bob DiCarlo and the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office to keep it local. Limited to 72 players – primarily F&B employees, area golf course personnel and enthusiastic locals – the entry fee covers greens fees, cart, lunch, a raffle, drinks (such as on-course Bloody Marys courtesy of title sponsor Deep Eddy Vodka) and dinner at the Frosty Frog Café. Participants are also asked to bring three toys, preferably sports related, to earn raffle tickets and Mulligans. The Vacation Company sends toys, as well as volunteers to help with the tournament and take pictures, and other Beaufort County establishments provide raffle prizes. After the tournament, deputies distribute the toys to the Boys & Girls Club of Hilton Head Island for its annual Christmas 50

Party, as well as area churches and needy families. Any money left over is donated to Daufuskie Island Elementary which used the proceeds to purchase a school computer last year. An avid volunteer who has played in many charity golf tournaments, Andrew did not have a lot of time for community service once he started working 60-70 hours a week. At the suggestion of the owner of the Frosty Frog Café, he organized the Toys for Cops event during one of the slowest weeks of the year for the local hospitality industry to increase participation and is thrilled with the event’s success and the opportunity to give back throughout the year. According to Andrew, joining the deputies to hand out toys at the Boys & Girls Club Christmas Party is one of highlights of the event. “One smile somewhere and I feel like I’ve done something good,” he explains. “I’m proud of our little tournament,” he adds. “I didn’t expect exposure. This is very humbling.” To register for the annual Toys for Cops Charity Golf Tournament, call Andrew Kelly at (843) 422-6686 or email drewk405@gmail.com. A box for toy donations will set up outside the Frosty Frog Café in Coligny Plaza in November and toys will be accepted up until the day of the tournament.

BOBBY LEE AND
THE MAGPIES BY TAYLOR KENT
•
Watching John Sturm and Bobby Magyarosi interact in a room together, it quickly becomes clear how much they enjoy each other’s company. Upon first glance, physically speaking, the pair is an unlikely duo, with age, style, and demeanor separating them. Spend five minutes with them, however, and their similarities are apparent. On most afternoons, it’s not uncommon to find both John and Bobby on New Orleans Road at John’s Music, with John behind the counter and Bobby perched on a stool on the other side. They formed their band, Bobby Lee and the Magpies, four years ago along with another John’s Music regular, Yannie Reynecke. A renegade rock blues band, Bobby Lee and the Magpies quickly became an island favorite amongst locals, offering an experience unlike most other Hilton Head entertainment. The band originated with prompting from Ivy Myer, who, at the time, owned local bar Porter and Pig, where Bobby, Yannie, and Sturm frequented for happy hour. Myer was in need of a house band, and the trio of musicians taking up her bar seats was a perfect fit. They brought on Jim Heird as their drummer and Clarence Williams on the bass, and the Magpies were complete. From the very beginning, the main focus of the band was simple: to enjoy themselves. All seasoned musicians, Bobby Lee and the Magpies was a side project for all of the members involved. This, along with their strong friendship, allowed for them to truly concentrate on merely having fun together. It wasn’t about money, or control, or power. It was about playing good music they enjoyed, and having a good time doing it. Playing weekly at Porter and Pig, the band began packing the bar wall to wall every weekend. As Sturm puts it, “people see that you’re having fun”. For musicians, it’s all about the energy you bring- when the band

is happy to be onstage, the audience is going to be happy as well. Bobby Lee and the Magpies took two big hits this fall, first losing their home of Porter and Pig with a change of ownership and direction, and then losing their guitar player, Yannie Reynecke, to Nashville, Tennessee. The band quickly adapted and brought on fiddle player Eric Reid for a new element of sound. Now, there are rotating groups of players depending on who is available and in town, keeping things fresh and interesting for the band. Another addition to the Magpies is bass player Phil Sirmans. With years of experience playing together, Sirmans and Reid have a special onstage connection that only intensifies the band’s bond and chemistry. At a Magpies show, you can expect anything from John Prine to ZZ Top, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins to Steve Earle. You can even expect some of Bobby’s original songs to be thrown into the mix. But what you can’t expect is for the band to take your request. The Magpies aren’t a tourist band, and prefer covering obscure songs they can put their own spin on. No matter what they play, though, the audience is satisfied. Their fans kept the band alive and well during the COVID shutdown by hiring the Magpies to play private parties, renting out bars and country clubs and offering up decks and driveways. Bobby and the Magpies look forward to the return of full normalcy, which for them will mean back to playing bigger shows like Seafood Festival and Thanksgiving Eve at the Boardroom. As far as the future, the band plans to keep going for as long as everyone is having a good time. To listen to the band’s new single from Bobby, Yannie, and John, “Baby’s Done More Time Than Me” is available on all platforms. TASTEOFHILTONHEAD.COM
