MEALS ON US RESTAURANT RAFFLE
A worthy fundraiser helping deliver meals to people in need.
Most people think of summer when they think of Hilton Head Island – the time when the beaches are flooded with visitors from all over, the restaurant scene is running at the top of its game and the excitement is everywhere you look. But for me, fall is the season when Hilton Head Island truly comes alive.
Autumn dials the temperature down just enough where you can still enjoy the beach, but you can also enjoy your favorite outdoor activities without the heat wearing you down. This sweet spot in our coastal climate that comes with autumn is most likely why you’ll find the calendar packed with festivals this time of year. The summer may be high season for visitors, but for foodies, this is our time.
You want Italian? Chili? Oysters? You’ll find a festival for all your favorites foods, pairing our island’s culinary brilliance with the perfect weather for taking in its beautiful views. And while the food is the main attraction, my favorite parts of these festivals are the opportunities to catch up with old friends, to make new ones and to enjoy the sounds of our local music scene.
Hilton Head is home to some spectacular musicians and also hosts a great deal of talented entertainers throughout the year. You’ll find a different sound in every venue on this island, at places like The Jazz Corner, Big Bamboo Café, The Boardroom, The Bank and many more, providing the perfect musical accompaniment for your meal.
For the real music enthusiast, this September brings back the second Island Jam Songwriter Festival. Last’s year’s inaugural event was a huge success and should be bigger and better in 2024. Songwriters and performers from Nashville and other areas across the country share their musical knowledge and talent with multiple shows over several days. This year, there is also a golf tournament that adds to the fun. For more information, please visit hiltonheadislandjam.com.

SPREADING THE LOVE
Healthy eating can be a hard sell sometimes. But at Delisheeyo, the flavor and the experience sell themselves.
BY BARRY KAUFMAN • PHOTOS BY ROB KAUFMAN
Despite owning one of the most celebrated hotspots for healthy eating, and one of the few in the entire county to focus solely on vegetarian food, Blake Wearren wasn’t always the biggest fan of the kind of fresh, healthy food he now champions.
“I used to call it rabbit food,” he said. “I didn’t really eat this style of food, but I met the chef here and she dipped a piece of kale in some of our Fred’s dressing for me to try. I thought I was going to have to put on a show, but as soon as it hit I was like, ‘I actually like this.’”
That life-altering discovery of the simple truth behind Delisheeyo – that healthy food can taste incredible – made Blake Wearren what he calls, “the original convert.”
He would not be the last.
“I’ll get a guy in here and you can tell he’s a meatand-potatoes kind of guy, and that’s my specialty because I grew up that way,” he said. “We just send them to the So Cal every time and it’s like a 100% percent success rate. And then that same guy will be bringing in their crew and it just grows from there.”
That’s not some hollow boast. One of the biggest drivers of the restaurant’s success, and indeed one of the main reasons it will now celebrate 15 years in business, is that tendency to convert the unlikeliest of patrons to fanatics. Someone who has never eaten healthy before will come in, usually at the urging of someone who has already been turned on to
the Delisheeyo experience, and will try it with some trepidation. And with one bite, they’ll be another convert. But it doesn’t stop there. The next step is getting downright evangelical about it.
This writer can testify to that, having gone from skeptic to believer thanks to the delicious simplicity of the Happy Rap (PROTIP – have them add goji berries). Not only is it a go-to favorite, it’s a regular fixture on my Instagram.
“A lot of longtime locals have made this their spot, and I think that’s been our anchor, the way they’ll promote it to their friends,” said Wearren.
One such longtime local, who not only makes Delisheeyo a regular stop but also plugs them on social media with regularity is musician Jevon Daly. The multi-talented member of bands like Silicone Sister, Lowcountry Boil, Jo Jo Squirrel and the Home Pickles, and too many others to count, considers himself a “So Cal guy.”
To him, the experience isn’t just about eating healthy. It’s about spreading the love that he gets every time he walks in.
“I know that the food’s going to be great, and I know that they’re going to bust my chops when I go in there,” said Daly. “I wish I could go there more. I like everybody who works there. It’s colorful personalities and colorful food.”
Creating that kind of following, one where patrons become promoters, starts with the always-fresh ethos at Delisheeyo. There are no shortcuts in the kitchen here, just a constant mandate to keep everything as fresh as possible, with some ingredients coming from as close as the garden out front.
“My dad does the garden… it’s a tricky area to grow in,” said Wearren, pointing out how the cold snap a few years ago took out guava, mango, lemon and lime trees. But the kale harvest is always strong, and a few inviting edibles let visitors get their first taste of the freshness found inside. “We put blueberries and blackberries on the edge for people who are passing by, even if they’re not customers. To be able to eat a fresh blueberry is a rare thing for a lot of people.”
It takes a little bit more to grow your own ingredients, then to combine them in a way that turns skeptics into believers. But that’s what it takes to develop a following.
“It’s hard. Not many people are willing to try this style of food,” said Wearren. “You can put heat to meat and put some salt on it and everyone’s going to like it. But getting people excited about kale juice, that’s a challenge.”
Now 15 years in, Delisheeyo has not only answered that challenge, but created an entire culture of devotees, spreading the gospel that “rabbit food” might just be the best thing you’ll ever eat.

Let the Celebration Begin STREET MEET
turns 19 this October, but that just means the 20th anniversary celebration is going to last all year long.
BY BARRY KAUFMAN • PHOTOS BY ROB KAUFMAN
If you’re going to talk about the history of Street Meet, the north-end standby serving “sidewalk sandwiches from America’s favorite street corners,” you could go back 19 years to when they first opened in Port Royal Plaza. In those days before the culinary world had really started to embrace elevated tavern fare, the concept behind Street Meet was a bit tricky for folks to wrap their heads around at first.
“The name was always a bit confusing, but it’s old slang for street vendor food,” said chef Carey Basciano. “What we wanted to do was go back to 1934 and do this regional American bar food from scratch… we were doing it before the
Food Network. Now people plan their whole vacations around that.”
So you can go back 19 years to when they opened, but to truly grasp the concept you have to go back a century or so, back to when the delicious simplicity of street food was the lifeblood of the working class. Before mammoth restaurant chains learned to process food to within an inch of its life, each region of the country had its own culinary language, written in burgers and bratwursts and sandwiches. Immigrants from all over the world brought their own traditions, recreating their home country’s menus with a new world accent.
“Back then, American food was
homemade, regional and ethnic… then it became synonymous with fast food and got a bad reputation,” explained Basciano. With Street Meet, they brought this food back to its roots. “We’re doing all of it in house and telling the story behind it.”
So far, we’ve gone back a century to explain the appeal of Street Meet’s inspired menu. But to truly understand what sets it apart as a restaurant, and has helped it develop such a huge following, we’re going to have to take another trip to the past. This time, to the 1970s, when U.S. Steel said its goodbyes to the city of Cleveland. With the steel belt eroding into the rust belt, the city’s population,
which had boomed during its heyday, fled in droves.
This mass migration of Clevelanders led to colonies across the country. And in those colonies, you’d find Browns fans. “Cleveland had the wherewithal to issue charters as official viewing locations. There are 370 of them around the world now,” said Basciano. “It’s the largest fanbase operation in the world.”
As an official “Brown Backers” certified charter, Street Meet has given Hilton Head Island’s many Cleveland transplants a rallying point to celebrate (and, in some cases, mutually lament) the fortunes of their beloved Browns.
“The president of the London branch came in here once,” said Basciano. “And we were just on WKNR, this radio station up in Cleveland, about a month ago. The DJs were down here and did a nice piece for it.”
Of course, a restaurant can’t develop a following as devoted as Street Meet’s on the strengths of Browns fans alone. Over the last 19 years, this Buckeye state
colony has caught on with locals in a big way, partly due to its menu, partly due to its vibe, but in a big way because it delivers on the simple promise of its concept – creating something with a sense of community.
“The catering side of the business has always been part of the focus, and that has allowed us to cook for big resorts, Island Rec, PEP, the Boys & Girls Club… that, plus having three kids who have grown up in this community have helped us tremendously,” said Basciano. “As my family grew, the community grew.”
And then there are, of course, the epic parties that have peppered the restaurant’s lengthy history. The Halloween Paparazzi Party, in which everyone came dressed as their favorite celebrity. The Prohibition Party, throwing back to the glory days when our long national nightmare of sobriety ended. And the litany of live music acts in between. Each has grown in the retelling to become legendary moments in island lore.
“Over the last 19 years, we’ve done a lot of events at the restaurant, and we’re going to bring all of those back for one year,” said Basciano. The run-up to the 20th anniversary celebration will not only see reboots of Street Meet’s famed parties, but also live music from White Liquor, Groove Town Assault, The Chiggers, and more with a different act each month. “We’re also going to get old photographs from the last 20 years and have them running on a loop so you can see all those parties from years ago.”
As it prepares for a milestone anniversary, the restaurant that has always satisfyingly scratched that itch for Americana and nostalgia, takes one last look to the past before embracing a bright future ahead.

GETTING THE BAND BACK TOGETHER
Nashville invades Hilton Head once again for the second annual Island Jam Songwriter Festival.
BY BARRY KAUFMAN • PHOTOS PROVIDED BY HILTON HEAD
Reid Perry has seen Hilton Head Island’s music scene from nearly every angle. As a long-time islander, he was there in the blurry days of the Old Post Office, cheering along as acts like Dave Matthews played this sleepy island at the edge of the map. Later, he would live the dual roles of band manager and dad, helping his son Chas find an audience with his band, Lost in the Media.
The music business is often a matter of who you know, and Perry knew just the guy to help his son’s band get a toehold in the competitive Nashville music scene. “I’ve known David (Preston) for years,” said Perry. Preston, a veteran of Nashville thanks to a lengthy career with BMI, got Lost in the Media booked a club called the Mercy Lounge. “A few years later,
when we reconnected, we started talking about doing a festival down here.”
Preston, who has been involved with festivals all over, was the right person to know. But Hilton Head Island is a long way from Nashville, in several senses. It may not have been the first place that
would spring to mind for a music festival, but one trip was all it took to convince Preston that the island had promise.
“I was really blown away by the facilities and the creative atmosphere that exists there,” said Preston. “It seemed like the perfect location to put on a festival… we represent millions of songwriters, and living in Nashville it was pretty much like calling my friends and saying, ‘Lets all go to Hilton Head and have a good time.’”
The first Island Jam brought together songwriters from the Nashville scene and elsewhere down to Hilton Head Island, combining two very different worlds in harmony. For fans, it was a great way to experience new sounds and discover the next up and coming artist.
(continued on page 28)
So when you bring back an event like that, how do you crank up the tunes?
“What we’re doing this year is building upon last year,” said Preston. “We’re throwing a different crowd at you guys because I like to do that. I like to make it a little different. Bringing the same crowd year after year is not how I like to do it.”
Part of that new crowd will be Nashville acts like Jeffrey Steele, who will headline the Saturday show, Earl Bud Lee, who wrote Garth Brooks’ “Friends in Low Places,” up and coming new country artist Avery Anna and many more.
This year’s event will also see a new dynamic to the festival, as the band LOCASH challenges islanders to show off their handicap. “LOCASH played golf last year while they were here and were so blown away they wanted to come back and hold a tournament,” said Preston. That tournament, the LOCASH Golf Bash, will be held September 19 at Heron Point by Pete Dye and benefits Tunnels to Towers. “To my knowledge, there’s not another songwriter festival that offers a golf tournament, so it’s a
great addition to Island Jam.”
And it’s not just Nashville’s best songwriters you’ll find up on stage. Island Jam will also give our local musicians a chance to perform alongside industry insiders, giving them the same chance to know “just the guy” that helped Reid Perry make this event a reality.
“The local talent is pretty amazing,”
said Preston. “It’s really important for us to support the local talent – we don’t want to come in and rob them of an opportunity to make some income. We really like to respect that local talent, and Hilton head has a great scene.”
The 2nd Annual Hilton Head Island Jam runs from September 18 – 22. Check out hiltonheadislandjam.com for the full schedule of events.

TOUCH GRASS
BY CHRISTY BARONI • PHOTO BY ROB KAUFMAN
A healthy mind and body is one that is well fed from every perspective. When you think about nutrition, likely thoughts of calories, macronutrients, measuring, and label reading come to mind. But how healthy and strong you are as a human depends on much more than just what food and drink you consume. Consider everything that you take in. The music you listen to, the air you breathe, along with the content you consume from any source of media all add up to influence your state of mind along with the state of your body. When building a nutrition plan the chemicals our bodies make on it’s own play a key role in how we use the nutrient-dense food we intake. We can hack these chemicals to create an environment that reinforces the positive while whittling down the negative. Let’s take a look at several hormones that can create a positive mindset and reinforce healthy habits.
Dopamine: Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, which means it is a chemical that allows various neurons and cells to communicate throughout your body. It plays a key role in our brain’s reward system and is often seen in light of activities that can create a ‘dump’ or overload all at once. Benefits of a dopamine dump include improved mood, more positive mindset, and feelings of increased motivation. The quickest and easiest way to create a dopamine dump is by participating in rigorous exercise. Weight lifting, cardio, or any mix of the two will do the job! However, that’s not the only way to generate this chemical.
Listening to music you enjoy and learning a new task can also create a dopamine dump.
Serotonin: Serotonin is another chemical our bodies make that has incredible benefits when considering our overall wellness. Serotonin helps not only regulate our mood, but also helps to regulate digestion and sleep cycles. Regular exercise contributes to our ability to create serotonin, however another powerful way to create it is by spending time outdoors in natural sunlight. A common phrase I hear lately is to ‘touch grass’ which simply means to be connected to nature instead of being inside glued to a screen.
Endorphins: Endorphins are our feel good chemicals. We often hear them described as occurring as a rush, and are the things referenced by runners as that runner’s high. Endorphins provide pain relief, and perhaps equally important also regulate appetite and satiety levels. It’s widely known that exercise can generate endorphins, however similar benefits come from laughing really hard, and also spending time in deep meditation.
These are all chemicals we need our bodies to produce to have a healthy mindset. Exercise is part of the process for all them but certainly not the only way. Let’s get outside, touch some grass, laugh with a friend, and enjoy the benefits of well fed mind and body.

MORE RHYTHM, MORE BREWS
A celebration of suds and sounds returns, moving across town and ramping up the tunes for Rhythm & Brews 2024.
BY BARRY KAUFMAN • PHOTOS PROVIDED
When you’ve put on an event as wickedly popular as Rhythm & Brews, the day-long celebration that debuted last year bringing together the region’s top breweries and national musical acts, what do you do to follow that? How can you improve on an event that flooded Celebration Park with people last year and attracted incredible musical talents?
The better question is, why would you?
“Just like any festival, you do what you know works,” said organizer Jeff Gerber. “Don’t try to reinvent the wheel, and don’t overthink it.”
He comes to this conclusion with experience. As Executive Director of the Hilton Head Wine & Food Festival, he’s stewarded
an event that has always grown organically. Nobody forced through the changes that have seen the festival expand to a weeklong celebration, they just sort of happened.
“We do wine and food so well, we learned that we should use that format because it works,” said Gerber. “We just invert it.”
That inversion marks one of the subtle improvements that will work its way into the second Rhythm & Brews Festival, being held this year September 28 at Shelter Cove Community Park. While the first iteration focused solely on craft beer, this year Gerber pans to add a handful of tents serving spirits and wine.
“It makes it more appealing, especially if there’s one person in
your party who doesn’t drink craft beer,” he added. The other two subtle improvements were mentioned above. The first is moving the second festival to September.
“One of the challenges we ran into last year was that since there were so many Oktoberfest events happening at the same time, the breweries weren’t always able to have a representative on hand,” said Gerber. “There were some fabulous beers that people missed out on because there wasn’t someone at the tent to talk about them.”
The second change is the venue. Moving Rhythm & Brews from Celebration Park to Shelter Cove Community Park adds a new dynamic to the event, not to mention gorgeous views of Broad Creek. “It’s a beautiful location, looking right on the water. That’s why people come to the island,” said Gerber.
The musical side of the event will also pursue a similar strategy of “staying the course.” Last year’s event proved to be a major draw for big regional acts, and Gerber hopes to augment that with a little bit of Hilton Head Island’s own signature sound.
“There have been some great music events on Hilton head and a lot of talented musicians,” he said. “There’s an untapped market there.”
If there is a long-term vision for growing Rhythm & Brews, it lies in the music. Craft beer will always draw a thirsty crowd, especially in an area such as ours who enjoy an embarrassment of riches from our local breweries. But when you pair those suds with the right sounds, the sky’s the limit.
“That is kind of the long-term goal is to marry this to a music festival,” said Gerber.
But for the most part, this second round of Rhythm & Brews will seem pretty familiar to those who enjoyed the event last year, right down to the worthy causes it supports.
“We’re going to partner with Ales for ALS again. That was a really good partnership, and a really worthy cause,” said Gerber. “We’d love to become an event where there are 25 breweries that are all partnered with Ales for ALS. Every little bit helps.”
The second annual Rhythm & Brews festival will be held September 28 at Shelter Cove Community Park. Visit hiltonheadrhythmandbrews.com for more information.

leadership. To create change, the organization provides those in need with a pathway toward self-sufficiency.

“Last year the organization raised over $200,000 which will support over 1,830 families facing poverty and food insecurity,” notes Bluffton Self Help Director of Development Carli Anselmi. “Right now, we are in the midst of our education campaign, and soon we will be heading ‘back to school’ and distributing school snacks to all 10 public schools to ensure students have access to snacks. As we approach Thanksgiving and the holidays, we will be collecting Thanksgiving meals for our neighbors and then will put together a Holiday Toy Drive collecting gifts for families in need.”

Meals on Us Restaurant Raffle
BY ALLYSON JONES
It’s time to ante up for a second helping of the Meals on Wheels Bluffton-Hilton Head’s Meals on Us Restaurant Raffle.
Online raffle sales begin on September 1, priced at $20/ticket or $100 for 6 tickets. Then three lucky winners selected during the first week of October will receive local restaurant gift card packs totaling $2,000, $1,000 or $500 valid through the end of 2025.
Last year, after basing the fundraiser on a similar event hosted by a Meals on Wheels (MOW) chapter in New Jersey, the inaugural raffle raised $13,000, with overhead costs running less than $1,000.
In 2023, Burnt Church Distillery and Hudson’s Seafood donated $500 and $400 respectively in gift cards, while Agave, Bluffton BBQ, Captain Woody’s, Catch 22, Coastal Restaurant Group, Lucky Rooster, Michael Anthony’s, San Miguel’s, Street Meet and many other favorites also donated to the raffle with gift cards covering meal expenses and experiences, such as wine tastings.
“One gift card can make a big difference,” declares MOW Executive Director Lili Coleman, especially as the organization does not receive state or federal funding for the 61,000 hot, nutritious meals delivered annually by volunteers to homebound seniors and the disabled.
As the population ages – an estimated 12,000 Americans turn
60 every day – MOW Bluffton-Hilton Head had to institute a waitlist for the first time in its 45-year history this past June.
“We didn’t want to have to do that,” notes Coleman. “Most nonprofits in our community are facing fundraising losses after COVID, so we are trying to make it up with this fundraiser. Our cost monthly is $60,000 to provide meals for our local neighbors, so it is very important that we raise this money.”
MOW has also instituted some new programs this year, including an alliance with the SERG group to provide frozen meals delivered on Friday so MOW clients have weekend meals; a partnership with PetSmart Charities and Palmetto Animal League to provide free pet food for clients who need it; a Monthly Social at the Hilton Head office; and working with Bluffton Soup Kitchen at the AME Church in Old Town to open a new food distribution site so volunteers who deliver meals in Bluffton do not have to drive to the Island to pick them up.
“Loneliness is a major, major issue because sometimes the only people our clients see during the whole day is our volunteer dropping off a meal,” adds Coleman. “A blowout Meals on Us could help us serve more people.”
To purchase tickets for the Meals on Us Restaurant Raffle or to learn about volunteer and sponsorship opportunities, visit mowblufftonhiltonhead.org or call (843) 802-0919.
