GET STRONG WITH KING TUT
Health and Fitness Tips from Christy Baroni.
Every season has its own personality. Spring is a time of renewal. Winter is a time to reflect on the year behind. Fall is for football and oyster roasts.
But summer is really a time of year when you get a chance to put everything on pause. Think about what summer meant when you were younger. Summer meant cleaning out your locker, finally laying down the load of textbooks and knowing you wouldn’t pick them up again until after Labor Day.
Back then, before our time was dictated by our cell phone’s calendar, before social media demanded our constant attention, there was nothing but time. Time to venture out and bike, swim and explore the world without ever knowing or caring what time it was. And when there was something planned – a trip to the movies, a ball game – you either got there on time or you didn’t. No one would call you, no calendar app would flash a notification on your phone.
It seems almost impossible that we got anything done in those days, but looking back that may have been the point. Summer wasn’t a time for getting anything done. It was a time for getting whatever you wanted done, even if that was nothing. Especially if that was nothing.
Maybe this is the summer we should all try and bring that back. Put the phone down a while and forget about the schedule. This summer, live in the moment. Engage with the people and the world around you. If you feel like sharing a snap of your meal and tagging a restaurant, go for it. Then put that phone back where it belongs. Throw it on airplane mode while you’re at it.
I think you will find that the memories you make this summer can be some of the best times of your life. You may not realize it tomorrow or next week, but years later I guarantee you will look back fondly on the memories in your mind and smile.

At this point, the name Benny Hudson can almost be considered mythological on Hilton Head Island. He was a real man, to be sure, and there are still a few long-time islanders who can tell you stories about his kindness, his love for the sea, and his outsized impact on the island’s history.
But what he’s come to represent, as Hilton Head Island’s modern age has lent a decidedly sophisticated air to this formerly quiet spit of land, is the old school. The island where the menu was determined by whatever was biting that day. The island where you knew your neighbor by their boat. This was Benny Hudson’s Hilton Head.
There are hints of that legend in the restaurant that bears his name. But wrapped around the framed photos, the replica of his wife’s boat and the jawdropping expanse of Skull Creek that takes up a whole wall is a thoroughly
The New Traditional Old meets new at Benny’s Coastal Kitchen, taking Hilton Head history into the future.
BY BARRY KAUFMAN • PHOTOS BY ROB KAUFMANmodern restaurant, one that isn’t afraid to drag tradition into the new century.
“You have this rural river setting in all of these windows, but it’s a very downtown urban restaurant inside,” said Chef Shaun Carter. “And that’s kind of what the menu is… We’ve done all these little touches with interesting differences that still embrace the Lowcountry but show it can be so much more than shrimp and grits.”
This juxtaposition of new and old was baked into the very concept of Benny’s Coastal Kitchen since the beginning. The CRAB Restaurant Group, helmed by the Reilley family (local legends in their own right), knew they had a unique opportunity to try for something fresh and exciting by building on such hallowed ground, and followed that as their north star every step of the way.
Said Carter, “Myself and the partnership talked early on and we wanted to be a little bit more edgy, have
a little bit more fun and just ask, ‘Do you have to stay in that box?’”
Carter’s culinary career left him uniquely suited to delivering on a menu that colors outside the lines. Growing up in Maryland, he learned the ropes early on in a home where they grew their own vegetables, raised their own chickens and created everything from scratch. When a local chef came to his middle school for a presentation, the lightbulb went off.
“I followed him out and asked, ‘How do I get a job with you?”’ said Carter. A year later (he was in middle school, after all), he got the opportunity to start out washing dishes. “Eventually they let me start prepping, and I never looked back.”
Just a few years later, he was running his own kitchens. He worked in a bakery to learn how to make pastry. He ran the kitchen at a catering company to learn on-site cooking, studying the culinary arts on the front lines.
So when ownership asked if they needed to stay in a box, Carter answered by unleashing the full force of his creativity and his 24 years of cooking. Drawing from his extensive travels, he’s created a menu that deftly weaves global influences across a menu built on Lowcountry ingredients.
“We’re using fish right off the boat, shrimp and oysters from right up the river, and we’re pairing them with some of these flavor profiles, styles and techniques… and you get this really cool combination of flavors,” he said. “You get what makes the Lowcountry special.”
The lunch menu’s Moqueca Brazilian Fish Stew, one of the most popular items, takes the local catch to South America, simmering it in coconut milk, peppers, onions and Carolina Gold rice for a bold pairing of American cuisines. The Whole Fried Catch becomes a build-your-own taco experience with the addition of baharat tortillas and chimichurri.
“The menu just has a lot of fun and flavor to it,” he said. “It’s fun to do something a little bit off kilter and not get chased out of town.”
The ingenuity on display is made even more impressive when you realize how quickly Carter dreamed it up. It was just this past November when he was invited
by“We stood on the rooftop with nothing out there in early November, and he’s telling me his goal and his vision and he has all these beautiful pictures and renderings of what this building is going to look like,” said Carter, “and I asked, ‘Well what’s the menu going to look like?’ He told me, ‘I haven’t found a chef to write it yet.’”
Reilley found his chef on that rooftop. And while a February opening meant Carter had to work quickly, the overall mantra was slow and steady.
“They didn’t want to just rush to get the doors open and start getting people in here. It was a very measured
approach,” said Carter. “It wasn’t about ‘let’s get out there and go,’ it was about ‘let’s take the time and do this right.’”
That diligence yielded one of the most fascinating restaurant concepts to come down the pike in years. Uniquely cosmopolitan with its open kitchen, daring menu, rooftop bar and sophisticated motif, but grounded in decades of island history by its reverence for the man (and the myth) who started it all.
“It meant a lot to the partnership to do this right,” said Carter.

SAN MIGUEL’S
Grab a seat this summer at the place where visitors become locals (and vice versa).BY BARRY KAUFMAN
PHOTOSBY ROB KAUFMAN
Every Hilton Head Island local has a story about the moment when they decided to make their vacation permanent. For most of us, it’s a moment so sublimely perfect that we want to capture it forever by making our home on a little island at the edge of the world. The details change from local to local regarding what brought us here, but it’s a common phenomenon that we all experienced that one moment we never wanted to leave.
For many of us, that moment happened in a comfy seat overlooking Shelter Cove Harbour, the air fragrant with the scent of Mexican spices and humming to the sounds of live music, the last salty-sweet sip of margarita still lingering on our lips. For locals since 1977, that moment has happened along the wide waterfront expanse of San Miguel’s.
This summer, just as it has for decades, it will happen for hundreds, perhaps thousands, of visitors to this iconic Mexican restaurant. But locals – don’t think that just because the summer crush has brought with it a legion of minivans and SUVs you can’t get out there and recapture your own moment.
“Even if you live here you can play like you’re on vacation,” said owner Maryanne Laskowitz. She notes that Saturdays are an especially local-friendly night, given the weekly changeover that occurs in the vacation rental market. “That’s a really good night to come visit, and a great day to hit the beach.”
As a means of recapturing that spark that led us all to the island, catching the sunset over the harbor from San Miguel’s is not a bad way to spend an evening. In fact, if you’re someone with an appetite for mouth-watering Mexican food and exquisitely crafted margaritas served with a side of spectacular scenery, there really isn’t anything like it.
Because as renowned as San Miguel’s is for its unbeatable waterfront location, it’s the food that has made it a true island institution. Ask Laskowitz for her favorite dish, and you might get more than you bargained for.
“Our fajitas are classic, our guacamole is always made with fresh avocadoes, and our chicken is all marinated in this house marinade that’s amazing,” she said. “Everything is made fresh daily down to the salsa.”
It would have been easy to phone in the menu – lots of places do it. But that’s not how you stay in business for 47 years. It’s not how you build the kind of following San Miguel’s has. And it’s certainly not how you fill a trophy case with the arsenal of “Best Ofs” the restaurant can claim, with accolades for its burritos and margaritas. Instead, the chefs here have focused on the craft of fine Mexican food, made from scratch and prepared to a standard of true old-world authenticity.
Even when San Miguel’s menu deviates
from classic Mexican, it does so with inspired culinary flair. She crab soup is a Lowcountry staple, but when it emerges from San Miguel’s kitchen it does so with gusto, boasting fresh hints of cilantro (with real crab, naturally). The Enchiladas del Mar transplant the rich seafood flavors of the south into the heart of Oaxaca, infusing both with electrifying savoriness.
But it’s the staples that they have consistently nailed for decades – fajitas that sizzle with bold flavors, tacos that pile fresh ingredients within a perfectly crispy shell, and burritos that burst with a kaleidoscope of taste and texture.
Naturally, when listing what sets San Miguel’s apart, Laskowitz has to make sure one of the restaurant’s biggest attractions gets the spotlight.
“We have ten different flavors of margaritas,” she noted. “That will keep you coming back.”
The house margarita is the star of the show, but the supporting players represent a deep bench of possibilities, from the tropical inspired 1800 coconut margarita to the unexpectedly refreshing jalapeno & cucumber. And every margarita deserves a stellar soundtrack, which San Miguel’s provides with live acts like Ben Robbins, Rob Ingman and Tommy Sims & Keith Ransom performing live all week long.
If your “I could live here” moment
happened at San Miguel’s two years ago or 20, it’s a great way to reconnect with what made you fall in love with Hilton Head Island. And you’ll probably find a few familiar faces when you do.
“We have a solid corps of our crew who have been with us for years, and they’ve always been fantastic,” said Laskowitz. “Especially at the bar – we need seven bartenders during the summer.”
For locals, it’s the place you go to remind yourself why you live here. For visitors, it’s a chance to fall in love with Hilton Head Island like millions have before you. And for both, San Miguel’s is the place for Mexican food that enamors your taste buds, surrounded by views that will inspire the soul.

The start of something big
BY LYNNE COPE HUMMELL • PHOTOS COURTESY SEA GLASS STAGE COMPANYThere’s a new community theatre in town, located in the heart of Hilton Head Island, and it has been creating quite a buzz.
Sea Glass Stage Company, formed in late 2023, is dedicated to expanding live performance opportunities for residents and visitors, with a focus on plays and musicals. The nonprofit organization took over the lease at the historic Coligny Theatre on Hilton Head Island January 1 of this year.
The island’s first movie theatre, Coligny opened in 1972, but has sat mostly dormant over the past few years.
In February, Sea Glass Stage hosted its first stage musical, Tick, Tick … Boom! for three amazing weekends. The local cast was outstanding. Reviews were remarkable. The buzz began.
As soon as the curtain fell on the first show, auditions were held for the next one. Again, local actors responded, and Neil Simon’s Lost in Yonkers was cast. The play ran May 3-19, exceeding expectations on all fronts.
Sea Glass Stage producers have plans to present a family-friendly musical for July and August, which will be announced as soon as rights have been secured.
“It has been an amazing few months,” said Mark Erickson, founder and president of the board of Sea Glass Stage. “Just getting the company up and running took an astounding amount of work, but our community has responded with both hands-on and financial assistance.”
A significant element of that assistance came from friends and family, Erickson said. His sister and a good friend joined forces to chair a fundraiser – the Sea Glass Soiree – in mid-February. The event included a performance by the jazz band Folderol, who are well-known around town.
Donations exceeded $20,000, and attendees are looking forward to the possibility of a repeat performance next year.
In addition, a partnership with Main Stage Community Theatre, another local nonprofit, resulted in a $35,000 donation, which funded audio and lighting infrastructure as well as the construction of a stage in the movie theatre, and other renovations to the space.
Longtime fans of previous offerings at Coligny Theatre will be pleased to know that the movie screen has been preserved and occasional movie nights are an option. Also, the popcorn machine has been deep-cleaned and still works!
Sea Glass Stage is the result of a dream that Erickson had since moving to the island in 2005. “The timing was just never right back then,” Erickson said. “But last year, things began to happen that seemed to fall into place and get us started.”
Erickson is no stranger to local stages. He has appeared in a number of plays and musicals, directed plays, built sets, worked as a stage manager, and learned and executed lighting and set design.
Behind the scenes, Erickson recruited board members who he knew had a passion for theatre, who were experienced in various phases of running an organization, and who he believed would be interested in helping him build something big. Since then, board members have been hands on in all aspects of the startup organization – from finances to publicity to recruiting volunteers.
“Someone asked one of our board members ‘Why another community theatre?’ and the response was ‘Why not?’ Erickson said. “We have many friends in our Lowcountry theatre circles and we want to collaborate with them, not compete against them. We each have something a little different to offer.”
SUMMER FUN AND LEARNING
Erickson had shared his dreams and ideas with his partner, Alex Clark, and the stage company became her dream too. Clark was motivated in part by the opportunity to not only engage with other actors and musicians, but also to teach the craft to younger and inexperienced people interested in learning.
“Education will be a big part of programming at Sea Glass Stage,” said Clark, education director for the company. Concurrently with getting the nonprofit up and running, she also earned a degree in English and theatre, and is now
certified to teach those subjects in the Beaufort County School District.
This summer, Clark, who has been involved in theatre since age 9, will lead two “Next Generation” camps for children and teens. Benji Morgan, a local music teacher, will serve as camp music director.
Act One: Musical Theatre Boot Camp, for ages 7 to 12, will be held June 10-21, Monday through Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the theatre in Coligny Plaza.
Campers will focus on singing, dancing, and acting, and will have an opportunity to collaborate with peers and explore their creativity by writing their own scenes to craft an original show. Fun improvisational games and audition training will help campers get comfortable on stage and ready to try out for future shows.
The grand finale will be a showcase performance for campers to share their talent and what they have learned. Camp is limited to 24 participants. Tuition is $400.
Page to Stage: Playwrights’ Workshop, for ages 13 to 17, will be held June 24-28 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the theatre. Participants will focus on acting and scriptwriting to co-create their own play. This camp also offers audition training and coaching of monologues.
The final performance will be a staging of the scripts written. Camp is limited to 16 participants. Tuition is $250.
“I am excited to work with our inaugural group of summer campers,” Clark said. “That was how I got started in theatre, and I still use lessons and techniques I learned back then.”
COME PLAY WITH US!
For grownups and youth alike, opportunities to become involved with Sea Glass Stage are wide-ranging. Auditions for up-coming shows are always local and will appeal to a variety of age groups. Volunteers are valued for the many tasks required to open a show to the public.
Erickson and Clark also recognize the importance of involving those who are gifted in other aspects of live theatre – directing, lighting, stage managing, sound, costuming, and set design and building. In addition, volunteers are the heart of any nonprofit, and Sea Glass is no exception.
“There’s a place for everyone who is interested,” Erickson said. “We are always going to need good people who know what they’re doing as well as those who are willing to learn.” Of course, donations to the nonprofit are always appreciated. In addition, sponsorships for each production are available, as well as the purchase of specific seats for the season, and naming opportunities from the auditorium to the concessions counter. The space is available for rental for meetings, film screenings, and performances.
To buy tickets to performances, to register for summer camps, to sign up as a volunteer, or for more information, visit sgstage.org, email staff@sgstage.org or call (843) 212-4172. Follow the organization on Facebook (Sea Glass Stage at Coligny) and Instagram (@seaglasscoligny) for latest updates on auditions, performances and opportunities.

FARMERS MARKETS
BY ALLYSON JONESWhether in search of fresh produce, meats, prepared foods or handcrafted goods, area farmers markets have what you need. These four markets offer the chance to meet and support local business owners and nonprofit organizations, as well as the opportunity to experience the Lowcountry’s unique venues and community spirit.
Hilton Head Island Farmers Market
In the fall of 2018, Rex Garniewicz, President/CEO of the Coastal Discovery Museum, thought hosting a Farmers Market on the historic Honey Horn property would be a good fit with the museum’s mission of “inspiring people to care for the Lowcountry,” as well as a way to support local farmers. Five years later, the Hilton Head Island Farmers Market has expanded to include not only a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, seafood and honey, but up to 30 local small businesses offering unique goods, fine arts and crafts, baked goods, prepared foods, home goods and more every Tuesday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
“A lot of people come and they talk to the vendors and they talk to each other – everyone is very friendly and easy to talk to. People have developed these social connections,” he says. “I think that’s something that people might not think about. It’s a great way for them to learn about the Island and the culture of this place.”
The Coastal Discovery Museum is located at 70 Honey Horn Drive and is open daily. The Hilton Head Island Farmers Market takes place every Tuesday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Parking and admission are free. For information on the Museum and Market, visit coastaldiscovery.org or call (843) 689-6767.
Farmers & Makers Market at The Shops at Sea Pines Center
While some people make a quick stop at their favorite vendors and head on their way, others make a day out of it and pick up lunch and then spend the afternoon exploring the Museum’s 68 acres of trails, gardens, native butterfly habitat, stables and Discovery House exhibits or signing up for a guided tour or class.
One of the market’s original producers, Whippoorwill Farms, can still be found once a month at the Hilton Head Island Farmers Market selling the pork, poultry, beef, eggs and vegetables raised on their small, regenerative Ridgeland farm and fulfilling pre-orders purchased on their website. Carolina Seafood & Produce is another regular vendor offering freshcaught local fish and shrimp and produce sourced throughout South Carolina.
Other perennial favorites include egg rolls from Gloria’s Filipino Foods, as well as craft beer, hard kombucha, hard cider or wine slushies from Gordon’s Hop Stop. And, this summer, the Museum’s popular Indigo Tie Dye program will be offered on Tuesdays during the market.
To Garniewicz, the best part of the farmers market is the sense of community it inspires.
Lowcountry Produce was founded by Dwight and Martha Garrett who moved from eastern North Carolina to help develop Brays Island. The couple bought a roadside farm stand in Lobeco and started selling produce, along with their sons Dwight and Noel. “Discovered” by Dean & DeLuca after they began canning leftover produce, Lowcountry Produce now ships their products to about 2,200 stores across the country.
In February of 2012, Lowcountry Produce opened a restaurant and market in downtown Beaufort followed by a third location in The Shops at Sea Pines Center in November that same year. Realizing the establishment needed to introduce themselves to Hilton Head Island residents, Noel Garrett and Woody Jones put together a farmers market in the center which celebrated its 11th season this March.
Taking place on Tuesdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. through the fall, there are typically 25 vendors scattered throughout The Shops at Sea Pines Center joining the unique boutiques, specialty shops, galleries and restaurants in the plaza.
According to Lowcountry Produce partner and market organizer Campbell Thorp, offerings include seasonal summer produce such as heirloom and round tomatoes, silver queen corn and peaches, plus handcrafted jewelry, weavers and fabric producers, leather work, painters, baked goods, candles, soaps and fresh flowers. Thorp mans the cannery tent with soups, sauces, chutneys, relishes, chow chows, pickles and preserves with barbecue cooking on an open pit cooker nearby with a seafood tent offering lobster rolls, shrimp and oyster baskets, po’ boys, as
well as soft shell crabs all summer long.
“This year we will have the soft shell crabs in our reach-in freezer,” notes Thorp. “We will clean them and bag each in sea water, so that a customer can take them home, thaw them, and put them on the grill. There is nothing better than opening your home freezer and seeing soft shell crabs. It’s pure happiness.”
The Shops at Sea Pines Center is located at 71 Lighthouse Road in The Sea Pines Resort. The Farmers & Makers Market takes place on Tuesdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. For details on the center and upcoming events, visit theshopsatseapinescenter.com.
Farmers Market of Bluffton
Over the bridge in Old Town, the Farmers Market of Bluffton takes place on Thursdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Martin Family Park and the adjacent Heyward House.
Opening in 2008, this non-profit 501(c)(3) mission is threefold: to support the local agricultural community; bring people downtown to support local
businesses; and bring the community together and promote awareness and utilization of local non-profits.
According to longtime Executive Director Kim Viljac, the Farmers Market of Bluffton “is a straight up farmers market, so we don’t have any arts and crafts. To put it simply, it’s either a plant or a food at the market and we try to keep a good ratio of whole food versus prepared foods.”
On any given Thursday, around 40 vendors offer fresh local produce, fresh flowers, poultry, beef, pork, eggs, herbs, cheese and breads, as well as prepared foods, including baked goods and desserts. When you’re done shopping, take your purchases next door to the Heyward House, grab a seat at the picnic tables and enjoy a meal with live music.
Spring through fall, the Masters Gardeners have a booth set up to answer any gardening questions and there are always a variety of non-profit organizations on hand to answer questions about their services, promote local fundraising events and gain volunteers. In the summer months, Backpack Buddies operates at the market to provide wholesome foods to kids that might go without once school is out.
Tuten Family Farms, Shuler’s Strawberries and Peaches and the Okan Food Truck are a few of the regular vendors at the Farmers Market of Bluffton and some farmers are now growing microgreens and other produce indoors, so they are available year-round. Others, like the gentleman who makes fresh gazpacho, are only there during summer’s tomato season. A list of vendors is available online at farmersmarketbluffton.org or email manager@farmersmarketbluffton.org the day before the
market to find out who is expected to attend.
The Farmers Market of Bluffton takes place at Martin Family Park, 68 Boundary Street in Old Town, on Thursdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Bluffton Breeze offers a free shuttle from the parking lot of Sam’s/Walmart directly to the market.
Hilton Head Island Community Market
In 2022, a small group of local business owners – Kathy Oda of Purely, Inc. & KODA Glass, Susannah Winters of Hilton Head Coffee Roasters, Colleen Laux of Cottonwood Soap Company and Andrea Smith of 7th & Palm –were working at a weekday farmers market and realized there weren’t many other markets available to artisans, or that took place on weekends.
“I give the credit to Susanne Winters, she’s the one who came up with the idea of starting our own market. She’s the visionary,” says Kathy Oda. “I’m a project manager by trade back in my corporate days, and it was like, ‘let’s make this happen!’”
“We really wanted to start a market that people would come to on the weekend and that would be reliable and wasn’t totally an artisan market, but had a nice combination of food and veggies,” she adds. “And we wanted it to be a place of community. We needed to give back somehow, so that’s where the idea came from of donating half of our vendor fees back to a local nonprofit.”
Sponsored by the Island Rec. Center, the Saturday market takes place at Shelter Cove Park from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and features around 20-25 vendors each week (more during special events like Christmas in July on July 27) offering everything from candles and soaps to prepared foods and fresh produce and meats. Each month, a nonprofit is selected to set up at the market and 50% of vendor fees are given to the organization at the end of the month.
“Hilton Head is this very unique microcosm,” notes Oda. “Other farmers markets in the state are primarily pulling in locals, but Hilton Head has the local folks; the tourists who are here for a week; the folks who come down for four or five months. It’s a very unique group of people that you don’t have anywhere else – but those are the people that we want to draw in and meet our local vendors.”
“The whole Lowcountry area is very artistic and there is a lot going on and we just wanted to be a part of it.”
Shelter Cove Park is located at 39 Shelter Cove Lane. To learn more about the Hilton Head Community Market and expected weekly vendors, visit their website at hhicommunitymarket.com or check out their Facebook and Instagram pages.

Kenny’s PLAN B
An
island institution crosses the bridge,
bringing
the Big Easy to Bluffton.
BY BARRY KAUFMAN BY ROB KAUFMANLate last year, Ken Ballard was taking one last look at the Circle Center location that his restaurant Kenny B’s French Quarter Café had called home for nearly 25 years. By that time, the tables were all gone. The pictures and UGA banners had all been pulled off the walls. The restaurant equipment had all been parceled out, and the savory aromas of Cajun cooking they’d produced had dissipated in the night air. It was just Kenny, a lively mural depicting a Bourbon Street bacchanalia, and decades of memories.
“I’m looking at the mural and - please don’t think I’m a nut - but I swear to God, I was hearing music,” he said. While the ethereal Dixieland played for an audience of one, Ballard says he could almost see phantoms of the restaurant’s long history around him. The two bulldogs who have served as mascots for the restaurant, happily panting from the front windows. His father and brother, both of whom have passed on, surveying him from the kitchen. “(They were) kind of putting my mind at ease.”
That reassurance bolstered Ballard as he began the short trek over the bridge from the south end plaza he’d called home since setting out his shingle. His destination, a magnificent space in Bluffton that doubled his square footage while setting the stage for a new chapter.
“When Bi-Lo closed, I began thinking I needed a plan B,” said Ballard. “We had opened on the south end when they were building the Bridge Center, and I’ll be honest I was always in love with it. I thought these were the prettiest buildings.”
The stylish architecture of the Bridge Center was only part of the appeal for Ballard. With the former Thai Smiles spot opening up, offering up a massive new space for the formerly cramped Cajun eatery, Ballard saw the perfect
landing spot. Sure, he’d had a good run on the south end. But with anchor tenants disappearing and leases changing over to a month-to-month basis, he could see the writing on the wall.
And yes, he’s heard all the rumors –perhaps even started a few of them thanks to a “we’ve been voted off the island” T-Shirt he put out. “It was a joke!” he said with a laugh. “But then I had customers come in asking if we’d really been thrown off the island and I thought, ‘I’m not making that shirt again.’”
“It literally was a matter of business survival,” he said. “I’ve put 26 or 27 years into this thing, and I’m not just packing it up and walking away.”
Thankfully, this second chapter has found granted Ballard a new lease on the life he’s built at Kenny B’s. The treasure trove of photographs, memorabilia, football banners, and New Orleans artwork now sprawls across a multitude of open walls. In one space, he’s created a visual history of the old restaurant. In another side dining room, a full doghouse grants the latest canine mascot a place to curl up. And that famous mural has been
replicated across two canvases above the takeout counter.
“There is a lot more room to spread out in there,” said Ballard. “I don’t know how we did it in the old place… The best comment I’ve had a lot of the customers who came from down there was, ‘It’s just so much more comfortable to eat in here.’”
That room comes in handy for the lunch rushes, which have proven to be one key difference between Kenny B’s previous chapter and its new one. Whereas the south end location made it a ripe location for tourists grabbing shrimp baskets on their way to the beach, the mainland
Kenny B’s is doing a brisk trade mid-day with customers relishing the chance to try something new.
“I’ve doubled the volume of muffaletta sandwiches, shrimp etouffee, shrimp creole... Basically the true authentic New Orleans dishes,” he said. “So that makes me think these are local people that may not have ever driven down there because they don’t go to the island.”
And now, thanks to Kenny B’s new chapter, they don’t have to. They can
enjoy a taste of the Big Easy without crossing the bridge, and create their own memories that will mark the next part of this Lowcountry’s institution’s long history.

Since many events are weather dependent, be sure to confirm dates and details by calling ahead or checking out the listed websites and social media pages.
Arts Center of Coastal Carolina
With a mission “to enrich and benefit the community through the arts,” the award-winning, non-profit regional Arts Center of Coastal Carolina presents an array of professional productions, visual arts, cultural festivals and educational outreach throughout the year.
This summer, experience the “pure razzle-dazzle” of the musical “Chicago,” center stage at the Arts Center, June 26-August 18.

On July 15, hilarious comedian Henry Cho returns to the Arts Center with two shows at 4 and 7:30 p.m. In addition to appearances on Comedy Central and Netflix, Cho can also be heard daily on SiriusXM and Pandora. Some of Cho’s film credits include “McHale’s Navy”, “Say It Isn’t So” and “Material Girls”.

GET STRONG WITH KING TUT
BY CHRISTY BARONI • PHOTO BY ROB KAUFMANA question I get asked regularly is how to build muscle. People of all ages, all athletic abilities, and all different goals want to know how to increase their muscle mass. The goal may vary from being stronger for a sport, to healing quickly from an injury, or simply to just look more toned. A strong body can live, heal, and grow optimally.
So, what’s the key to building muscle? A few things add up to a body that can build and retain muscle mass, with nutrition always being the foundation. Having enough protein, and a balance of carbohydrates and fats with that, contributes to a body that can build lean mass.
But what about in the gym? What is the secret to building muscle? People who build and maintain muscle do one thing that others do not; they rely on King TUT.
TUT refers to Time Under Tension, and it is King when growing muscles. TUT simply describes how long a particular muscle is under strain during an exercise. The principal behind TUT is that by increasing the duration of time that your muscles are under load (or under strain) you can maximize muscle growth and gains.
How can you start using TUT to increase your muscle growth? It’s so simple: slow down. A phrase rarely heard in the gym is to slow down your repetitions, but I assure you there is
magic in the speed and pace of your movements.
There are 3 phases of completing a rep: Concentric (shortening the muscle), Eccentric (lengthening the muscle), and Isometric (holding tension). Let’s take the bicep curl for example, concentric is when you are pulling the weight upward, isometric is holding it at the top of the curl, and eccentric is when you are lowering the weight to starting position.
Focus on slowing down your eccentric movement and holding that isometric for a moment as well. Staying with the bicep curl example, you would raise the weight as quickly and powerfully as possible, hold at the top for :03, and lower the weight as slowly as possible. Without increasing the weight of your dumbbell, or the number of reps you complete, you can increase your muscle building capacity simply by slowing down and increasing your TUT.
As mentioned before, nutrition is also key to building and maintaining muscle. After you apply King TUT in the gym follow your workout with a snack that is high in protein and paired with a clean carbohydrate. An easy solution is a shake made with whey protein, banana, and almond milk.
Enjoy your workouts, and enjoy the benefits of building muscle!
