When I first moved to the island in 1989, I couldn’t understand why all the locals seemed so desperate for spring to come. I remember thinking, ‘are the winters here that bad?’ There’s no sleet, there’s hardly ever snow and the worst-case scenario means you have to put on a heavy jacket. Now, 34 years later, I completely understand why spring was so important. Maybe I’m spoiled, but it just seems like with each passing year colder temperatures became harder and harder to bear.
Maybe spring represents a break from the cold, but it sure feels like the joy of spring on Hilton Head Island comes from the launch of festival season. Once the mercury drops, it seems like people take any excuse to get out there and enjoy the weather with friends and neighbors.
For me, the first sign of that spring social season comes when the Hilton Head Island St. Patrick’s Day Parade steps off. From its humble beginnings - as a way for restaurateur Tom Reilley and a few dozen of his closest friends to celebrate Ireland – to its current status as one of the biggest events in the southeast, it’s always been the island’s favorite party. And now it’s the preamble to a whole slew of events, from the Hilton Head Wine and Food Festival to the RBC Heritage presented by Boeing. And in between, can’t-miss events like Wingfest and Mayfest ensure there isn’t an empty spot on the social calendar.
Even outside of the events, the warmer weather brings back the visitors who put those valuable “heads in beds” and keep our restaurants in the black every year, it lets us appreciate all of the fantastic outdoor dining options that exist on Hilton Head, and it reminds those of us who have been here a few decades how lucky we are.
Spring has always been considered a time of rebirth. On Hilton Head, it’s a time of rediscovery. In spring, we’re reminded of what makes this island special. Make sure you get out there and enjoy it.

Lucky Rooster’s David Leffew spun good fortune into a fantastic new family restaurant at Lucky Beach.

A little bit of luck can get you a long way. But good luck is only worth what you do with it.
David Leffew, President of Leffew Restaurant Group owners of Lucky Rooster, is a perfect example of this concept. That flagship restaurant flipped the script for the island’s culinary scene, taking the tenets of fine dining and imbuing them with a Southern sensibility and a laid-back flair that set it apart on a very crowded island.
It wasn’t a concept that Leffew originated, but it’s one that benefited
from his unique instincts as a restaurateur. He was fortunate to take over at Lucky Rooster, but it was what he did with that lucky break that has led to the restaurant’s
continued success.
And when a certain national restaurant chain shuttered the doors on a beautiful building it had constructed right at the edge of 278, Leffew saw another lucky break coming his way. And another opportunity to turn that luck into success.
“The first time I walked through here, this was all enclosed and it was pretty dark,” he said, perched amid a panorama of windows at the new Lucky Beach Bar + Kitchen. “I said the only way this was going to work is if we opened this up.”

With the help of David Thompson Architects, Leffew began to execute on a vision for the gargantuan restaurant space, which had dominated the island’s main drag where it meets the road to Folly Field Beach. Gone were the stodgy Continental trappings of a chain Italian restaurant, replaced by walls of glass that could open wide, merging indoors and outdoors and filling the restaurant with the soothing breezes of the nearby ocean. A Caribbean-inspired palate of beach colors washed out the earthy browns, adding light and festivity to a restaurant built around a vibe of pure family fun.
“There are some fantastic restaurants on the island, and we’ve enjoyed a good spot in that fine dining market (with Lucky Rooster). But we wanted to make sure that if we did another concept that it would be more casual, and I think we really hit the mark with that,” said Leffew. “A couple of our regulars have come up to me, asking why I didn’t make it more like Lucky Rooster? For one thing, being two miles down the road, We did not want to compete against ourselves.”
Instead, Leffew took the lessons learned at his fine-dining restaurant and applied them to the concept of a casual restaurant. The menu abounds with family-friendly fare like hand-breaded chicken tenders and smashburgers, but a closer look reveals the elevation and intentionality that sets Lucky Beach apart from your typical family restaurant.
“We wanted to be an American menu, but bring in little aspects of Southern and Lowcountry cooking, like using local shrimp in the shrimp and grits or using the smoker for our wings and our prime rib,” said Leffew. “If you look at our Beach Burger, it’s a delicious smahsburger that we’re using a Gullah pink sauce on to give our tip of the cap and create a sense of place.”
That smoked prime rib, incidentally, has anchored one of Lucky Beach’s most popular special events – with discounted prime rib on Mondays and Tuesdays. “It’s a big hit. People are loving it,” said Leffew. “I mean, it’s delicious. We we take good care of that back in the smoker and it gives it a great depth of flavor.”
But what’s on offer is just part of the appeal – it’s also how you can get it. Lucky Beach is, at heart, a neighborhood restaurant that knows it has a hungry
crowd of beachgoers. During the shoulder season, it’s a place for mid-island locals to go enjoy a meal with the family, a happy hour cocktail or a drink on the patio without having to drive all the way to the south end. During the summer months, it adds a full-throttle to-go and pick-up service, offering quick beach eats (not to mention exquisite ice cream) through the convenience of a walk up window.
“Especially during this past summer, people were just popping in non-stop,” said Leffew. “It was just a great way to grab a bite to eat on a beach day.”
The expansive kitchen afforded Lucky Beach by the building’s previous life as a chain has given Leffew another lucky break, one he is capitalizing on by creating a robust catering program. “It was a huge kitchen, just massive. So we took the big frontline for the restaurant and tailored the backline to handle large-scale catering and banquets,” said Leffew. “We’ve already done catering events for schools, communities and associations and that’s something we’re growing as we speak.”
It was a spot of good luck that landed Leffew in a prime piece of real estate, ideally suited for a family restaurant. But that luck isn’t what has made Lucky Beach such a welcome addition to the island’s restaurant scene. It’s what he and his team have done with it.
Transforming the space into a breezy beachfront paradise. Creating a menu that does for casual dining what Lucky Rooster did for fine dining. And establishing a place that locals can call their own, while showing the visitors what makes Hilton Head Island so special.
“Really, Lucky Beach is about
combining a fun experience, great music, and amazing dining in a space that brought in a neighborhood bar and grill feel,” said Leffew. “It’s a place where you can watch a football game or grab a bite and a drink after a day on the beach. That’s the vibe we wanted to bring out, really embracing our location in the Folly Field neighborhood.”

A GOOD MOVE FOR Bad Biscuit
With Coligny’s new tenant, a culinary career comes full circle.

Things have an interesting way of coming around full circle. Take Dave Peck for example. Before he became one of the island’s most fascinating serial restaurateurs, with Bad Biscuit and A Lowcountry Backyard on his resume, he was just a Hilton Head Island kid learning the rewards of hard work.
“I used to dump the trash cans at Coligny. I’d mow the grass, I’d do the weeding… it was my job,” he said. With the pay he earned working odd jobs around the plaza for Coligny founder Norris Richardson, he always made sure to pay a visit to Urato’s Plaza Pizza. Each deliciously cheesy slice was a mouth-watering payoff for a day spent toiling away in the summer sun.
“They used to open the top half of the door and serve pizza by the slice out of the window,” said Peck. “I remember having to look up to order, with my hands just reaching the top.”

A few things have changed since then. For one, Dave Peck doesn’t have to stretch to reach the half door that still remains in the Coligny store front. But perhaps the biggest change is that it’s his own food now being served behind that door.
“I’ve always had my eye on that spot. It’s right in the middle of everything, across from the beach, it has great outdoor seating and a huge kitchen,” he said. “It was definitely a win win.”
Even as he built his restaurant empire, first at the celebrated A Lowcountry Backyard on Palmetto Bay Road, then at Bad Biscuit’s original location on Dunnagan’s Alley, that halfdoor in Coligny remained in the back of his mind. He would occasionally remind the powers that be in Coligny to put him on the short list the next time it opened up, and kept his restaurant broker on standby.
In the meantime, he poured his soul into creating restaurants that were as much an experience for the senses as they were for the palate. Bad Biscuit could have earned its reputation on the food alone – perfectly crafted Southern biscuits that flaked delicately with buttery flavors perfectly complemented by inspired toppings, plus bowls and sandwiches informed by Peck’s singular culinary flair. But it was the atmosphere that set Bad Biscuit apart – a funky flea market vibe of off-the-wall art, signed memorabilia and vintage arcade games that oozed authentic oddness.
The restaurant built on “Rebellious Southern Fare” was a smash, even as tucked away as it was on the backside of a complex on a side street most of us travel solely to avoid the Sea Pines traffic circle. And then came the phone call Dave Peck had been waiting for.
“My broker called and said (the spot in Coligny) was available and hadn’t been listed yet,” he said. “Within ten minutes, we had a deal on it.”
With the papers signed, Dave Peck’s journey came full circle. The same Coligny restaurant space where he’d spent his childhood was now a place he could call his own. And the Bad Biscuit concept he’d launched on a quiet corner of the island could serve the masses who flock to Hilton Head’s downtown. Step inside and you’ll find that same funky authenticity, and that same delectable menu – with a few new additions. As a nod to Peck’s first love at Coligny, he’s introduced the “pizza

And now the team at Bad Biscuit gets a chance to discover why the boss had always wanted to call that little spot by the beach home. “I would not have done this move if I didn’t have this crew. I have such great managers, and everyone treats this place like their own. I got constant compliments from people coming into the restaurant. And the staff was thrilled about going to Coligny,” he said, adding with a laugh, “but then we had to move furniture.”
The funky vibes and deliriously good food – and all the furniture – are now fully in place at Bad Biscuit’s new home. And if a delicious meal behind that half-door was enough to fuel Dave Peck’s ambitious rise in the island’s culinary world, imagine what it could do for you.

The first in our ongoing series explores the history of the island’s restaurant scene, helping you build on your Lowcountry cred.

Some bars and restaurants on Hilton Head are more than just a place to grab a drink and a meal – they’re signposts along our journeys as Hilton Head Island residents. For example, if you remember Moneypenny’s, you’ve been here a while. If you remember Wingo’s, you’ve been here even longer. If you remember The Old Post Office, you’ve practically a native.
And there are places like that all over the island, either buildings that have served as the backdrop for countless treasured (or in some cases fuzzy) memories or institutions that have endured regardless of their location.
Our first installment focuses on one of the latter, a place that has persisted and evolved across three very different locations. In its earliest iteration, The DryDock was the infamous hangout for locals looking to let their hair down into the wee hours of the night. Two moves later, it has emerged as a premiere family restaurant where the most uncontrollable patrons are usually the ones ordering off the kid’s menu.

1994-2009:
The Party Years on Executive Park Road
It was 30 years ago that Rob and Vickie Arbogast launched The DryDock, taking over the spot on Executive Park Road that Captain Woody’s now calls home. Rob, who had opened Player’s Club in 1981 (and again in 1992) as well as the Boathouse in 1987, had built up a reputation on the island’s food and beverage scene and was excited to hang out his own shingle.
That reputation built a steady following, particularly after the Arbogasts bought out music store next door, The Gramophone, and expanded The DryDock to include a billiards hall. The expansive space lured in a crowd that knew The DryDock as the place to make questionable decisions.
“We were only open for food until four or five, and then after that it was party on,” said Rob.
“People bring up pictures sometimes of people that I didn’t know were going there back then,” added Vickie. “I just think, oh my gosh, everybody is so young.”

If you remember the lingering scent of pre-ban indoor smoking, the hiss of shuffleboard pucks sliding down the pines and the chatter of locals catching up over drinks, you remember the party years.
2009-2015:
DryDock Grows Up on Office Park Road
With the expansion of another restaurant next door necessitating extra town-mandated parking, the Arbogasts moved on from their original location to an unconventional spot for a notorious bar – inside the Office Park Road complex that has since been torn down to make way for USCB. A mix of professional offices and commercial rental space, their second location proved to be the ideal spot for The DryDock to evolve.
For starters, it was hard to find. Which doesn’t seem like a blessing until you realize that worked just fine for the locals who enjoyed having a spot all to themselves.
“We had a really nice outside bar there, and the local crowd followed up,” said Rob. “And the visitors, when they could find us.”
It also came with an expansive kitchen, allowing Rob and Vickie to pivot away from the late-night bar scene and into limited dining options.
“It had a really nice kitchen, we had tables and chairs and everything… it was really small, but it was good,” said Rob. “I knew how to cook, and like with anything you have to do whatever the situation warrants. So we did.”
If you remember digging into a tasty pub burger with an ice-cold beer in the sun-dappled privacy of the outdoor bar, you were there when The DryDock grew up.
2015-PRESENT:
Family Fun and Fond Memories on Marina Side Drive
The arrival of USCB meant The DryDock was once again in search of a home. And while their second location had been a hidden jewel of the island, there was no hiding it when they arrived on Marina Side Drive, with the steady hum of 278 traffic passing right by their sign.
Sure, you can still pop in for a drink or two, a game of shuffleboard and a few games of football. But these days, much like TGI Fridays grew from a rowdy late-night spot in New York City to a nationwide chain of family restaurants, The DryDock has matured into a full-fledged destination for the entire family. The only difference is, you’re going to eat better at The DryDock.
“It’s a tavern-style menu with Philly cheese steaks and specialty burgers,” said Rob, “but I added a whole side of seafood –sandwiches, baskets, shellfish pots…”
And much like they did when The DryDock sailed away from Executive Park Road, the regulars have happily navigated to the new location.
“We’re lucky we’ve had such a great following,” said Vickie.

An annual rite of spring nearly four decades in the making, the 2024 Hilton Head Island Wine & Food Festival returns March 24-30. Savor fine wines, craft beers, strong spirits and epicurean delights accompanied by live music, creative artwork, signature shopping and spectacular views at some of the Island’s most tasteful and picturesque locations.
The festival’s unofficial kick off begins with UNCORKED at the Shipyard Beach House on Thursday, March 21.
Pull out a bottle or two of wine you’ve been saving for a special occasion and the story that goes along with it or stop by Rollers Wine & Spirits to pick up something different and bring it to this beachside party to share with other local “wine insiders” and fellow wine lovers.
Longtime Festival Executive Director Jeff Gerber modeled the event after the “Open That Bottle Night” started by Wall Street Journal wine columnists in 2000.
“It’s just a fun event and very casual,” he says. “It’s also the hardest to explain. It’s just something that needs to be experienced.”
“It does tend to be kind of wine nerdish, if you will, but not in an uptight or pretentious way,” he adds. “If you show up and you’re just getting into the wine scene, they’re not going to look down on that since they all have stories about the wines they started out drinking in college.”
Admission to UNCORKED is $35 per person, plus a bottle or two of wine to share. The ticket price includes hors d’oeuvres, glassware and sunset views. A limited number of tickets are available.
The focus then shifts to Craft Beers at the Beach at The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa’s exclusive Grand Ocean Terrace on March 24. Featuring more than 50 offerings from two-dozen regional craft breweries, spend a relaxing Sunday afternoon sipping through the selections while overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and enjoying live entertainment, as well as delicious foods from The Westin’s culinary team.
Wednesday, March 27, head over to The Shops at Sea Pines Center for the perennially popular Sip & Stroll checking out the pop-up art market complementing the center’s unique stores, galleries and restaurants with a glass of wine in hand while being serenaded by the best local musicians.
Double Gold wines as determined by February’s International Judging Competition are paired with local live music and delicious Lowcountry cuisine on Thursday during the Stay Gold: A Lowcountry Wine, Food, and Music Experience at Lucky Beach Bar + Kitchen.
The celebration then moves to the Country Club of Hilton Head for the elegant Grand Tasting on Friday, March 29, showcasing award-winning wines from the winter competition and top wines from the festival’s wine partners.

of the Public Tasting taking place at Lowcountry Celebration Park from 12-3 p.m.
Sip and sample more than 250 world-class wines, spirits and brews while watching the chefs in action at the Sysco Outdoor Gourmet Challenge and bidding on award-winning wines at the Silent Auction to benefit the John F. & Valerie Currie Scholarship Fund. For an additional fee, a VIP Lounge package is available offering early entry and additional tastings with chef-selected hors d’oeuvres served under a private, shaded pavilion.
What began as a 3-hour wine tasting in a hotel parking lot to boost Island tourism in the early spring has gracefully aged into a series of carefully curated events pumping more than $4 million into the local economy annually and attracting visitors from across the country.
Last year, the festival’s scholarship fund donated $10,000 to both the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) and Technical College of the Lowcountry (TCL) for students pursuing degrees in hospitality and tourism, part of $145,000 in total scholarship money provided over the past nine years.
The non-profit Hilton Head Wine & Food, Inc. which produces the Wine & Food Festival is always looking to add new events and new partnerships to benefit the local community, as well as other charitable organizations.
“What can we do to create an experience?” asks Gerber.
Last October, the festival hosted the first Hilton Head Island Rhythm & Brews showcasing live music and unlimited tastings from more than 40 craft breweries. Partnering with Ales for ALS which offers participating breweries access to an experimental hop blend from the Pacific Northwest, free of charge, in exchange for a portion of the sales from the beer brewed from these hops, Gerber hopes to work with the organization again during Craft Beers at the Beach.
In addition to developing some smaller spirit- and foodfocused events, “The whole economy basically runs on tourism – hotels, restaurants, golf,” he notes. “I’d also love to do something to appreciate all those industry people.”

From humble beginnings, Hilton Head Island’s signature Irishfest has become so much more than just a parade.
As Hilton Head Island has grown over the years, it’s hard not to notice a few traditions that seem to have died out a little. You don’t really see kids playing ball in the middle of the William Hilton Parkway anymore. There isn’t the traditional post-hurricane get together at the one restaurant that stayed open (mostly because we have more restaurants, which to be clear is a good thing).
Call it the march of progress. But there’s one march that no amount of progress can take away from us. If anything, it’s only transformed an island tradition into a full-blown festival unlike anything you’ll find anywhere else. It’s our annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, now dubbed Irishfest in deference to the fact that, like to much of the island, it’s transformed into something much greater than it once was.

Island Shamrock Run 5k and annual Irish Concert on Saturday with the Sunday parade started out as just a few friends chasing a wild hair down 278. When Tom Reilley, patron saint of the island’s Irish celebration and event founder, decided to march himself and a few friends down the street on a drizzly St. Patrick’s Day in 1983, even he didn’t realize what he’d started.
“We did it in the rain, thinking there would be around 20 people who showed up. Instead, we had 300 people turn out to watch,” said Reilley. “That parade really kicked off our reputation.”
And that reputation only grew. What started out as a few hundred locals ballooned to thousands of locals and visitors. That giant crowd attracted more participants to the parade, from national recording artists to the Boston Police Gaelic Column of Pipes and Drums, from hometown heroes to Mr.
Peanut himself, riding in the Planter’s Peanut Nutmobile. (Not to be outdone, the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile has also graced the parade route down Pope).
Along the way, this tiny gathering became the biggest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the entire state, not to mention one of the top 20 tourism events in the southeast. And yet for all the explosive growth it has enjoyed over the last 40 years, its dedication to the community is what has kept it in islanders’ hearts as one of our most valued traditions. Whether that’s featuring local high school marching bands or naming venerated locals as its Grand Marshall, it’s always been as much a celebration of our island as that other, more emerald island.
Irishfest kicks off this year March 16 with an afternoon Irish concert at Celebration Park. The parade steps off Pope Ave the following day at 3 p.m. Get there early. Trust us.

Savory or spicy, tangy or sweet, fried or grilled, marinated or dry rubbed, after 27 years Joe Cain and the Island Rec. Center aren’t “wingin’ it anymore,” when Hilton Head Wingfest returns to Lowcountry Celebration Park on Saturday, March 23 from 11 a.m.5 p.m.
Join two-dozen of the area’s best restaurants and businesses as they serve up 8,000 pounds of wings in an effort to earn both the popular and judge’s votes. This annual, fun-filled party in the park has become the Rec. Center’s longest running festival and features live music from Ohio’s own Naked Karate Girls, “the Best Party in the Galaxy (TM),” and Savannah’s TGLive/Tru Gentleman, kidfriendly activities, semi-friendly competitions and an After Party at the Courtyard Marriot Hotel across the street.
Eat your way through mountains of wings and other festival foods washed down with your favorite drinks and then vote for the best while the little ones bounce around in the Kids Zone, work their way up the rock-climbing wall or catch air on the bungee jump.
In March of this year, the famed Anchor Bar – home of the original Buffalo Chicken Wing created in desperation during a snowstorm – celebrates the 60th anniversary of its trademark, deep-fried creation. Joe Cain, Special Events Director at the Island Rec. Center, also celebrates a special birthday this year that just so happens to take place on the Friday before Wingfest.
When Cain moved to Hilton Head Island in 1986, wings were not a thing. So, the Rochester, New York native dragged an extension cord out to his patio, hooked up his Fry Daddy and cooked up wings for monthly get togethers. Word got out and soon “Wings by Joe” were available at an upstairs restaurant near Coligny Plaza where the Courtyard Marriott now stands.
The original Wild Wing Café opened in Coligny in 1990 and owners Cecil and Dianne Crowley made it a point to ask Cain for his opinion and menu advice.
“Like I was some sort of celebrity chef,” he laughs. “When I’m just a nitwit who knows how to cook wings.”
Cain and the Crowleys were also responsible for planning the first Wingfest. Fast-forward 30 years and the event is now the Rec. Center’s longest running festival with Wild Wing Café participating annually. Last year, the Bluffton location carried on the tradition after the Hilton Head location closed in early 2023.
“Celebrating chicken wings is in my bones,” declares Cain, who will once again be sporting his trademark chicken wing hat –ordered directly from the Anchor Bar – while celebrating his own birthday at the 2024 event.
Cain refers to the Wednesday before Wingfest as “the most exciting day of the year” since that’s when nearly 250 boxes of uncooked chicken wings arrive at the Rec. Center and are immediately loaded up and distributed to participating restaurants.
“It evens up the [competition] playing field,” he explains. “Everyone gets the same size wing. It’s just a matter of taste.”
Last year, reigning champion Chef Orchid Paulmeier/One Hot Mama’s was once again crowned the first-place winner by the judges – the ninth time they have earned the gold medal. Previous award-winning wing flavors, featured on the restaurant’s menu, include Hawaii Five-O, Hot Asian and Maui Wowii.
The Hilton Head Firefighters’ Association (HHFA), whose volunteers annually create wings for the event with a fire-service related theme, and Wild Wing Café rounded out the top three judge’s picks in 2023. Meanwhile, Coconutz took home the top spot in the People’s Choice Awards – recognition they have earned every year since 2017 – with Wild Wing and the HHFA placing second and third, respectively.
The battle isn’t limited to participating restaurants – sign up for or cheer on family and friends of all ages during the Kid’s Wing Bobbing Competition with plastic, chew toy-like wings hidden in whipped cream and the Adult Wing Eating Contest taking place throughout the afternoon.
Everyone is a winner at Wingfest, with proceeds benefiting the non-profit Hilton Head Island Recreation Association. Each year, this community-based organization raises over $200,000 from various events to benefit the Carmines Family Recreation Scholarship Fund, ensuring no child is denied recreational opportunities.
Wingfest admission is $10 per person; free for children under 11. Tickets for food, beverages and activities are sold separately at a booth inside the gate for $1 each. Mayfest returns for its 44th installment, bringing with it the Bluffton State of Mind.

It can sometimes be easy to forget – with the flood of new developments, new restaurants and new… well, everything –that Bluffon is, at its heart, a small town. Sure there may be a few new faces tucked among the familiar when you’re out for a night on the town, but the spirit of Bluffton ensures that those new faces will become old friends before too long.
Which is part of what makes each year’s Mayfest such a crucial part of the Bluffton State of Mind. This annual event is more than just a collection of artists, artisans, restaurants and contests. It’s a rite of passage for anyone who is just discovering what sets this small town apart.
When the collection of slightly imperfect pooches takes the stage for the Ugliest Dog Contest, and you see the genuine love everyone in the crowd feels for each curious canine, when you look around at a crowd made up of people from all over the world are bopping their heads to the same live band, you’ll understand how tight this community is bound.
And then you’ll begin to understand exactly what Mayfest celebrates. Ostensibly, the Bluffton Village Festival exists to pay homage to the May River that first put the town on the map. The collection of artists speaks to the town’s history as an enclave for the eccentric and a haven for the creative. The food speaks to our area’s bounty of outstanding chefs and restaurants, and our growing profile as a culinary capital. The throngs along Calhoun Street, basking in the gentle breezes

off the river, speak to the geographical magic of the river’s high bluff.
Each is an ingredient in what sets Bluffton apart, and they can only truly be savored together one day in May.
This year’s Mayfest returns on May 11, running up and down Calhoun Street. Details have not been set yet, but you can be assured that the usual staples will all be in place. The Ugly Dog Contest, celebrating Bluffton’s oddest-looking canines. The pieeating contest, where delectable creations from the Culinary Institute of the South will be quickly destroyed by jaws hungry for victory. Live music and performances that put the spotlight on the Lowcountry’s wealth of talent. The world-famous shrimp salad sandwiches prepared by the congregation at Church of

Prioritize PROTEIN

The buzzword around gyms and health spas everywhere is Protein. Why is this macronutrient so crucial? Simply put, protein is the building block of life. It’s the foundation for your muscles, bones, skin, hair, and it plays a vital role in almost every process in your body, from healing wounds to producing hormones. So, getting enough protein isn’t just about a tight and toned body – it’s about optimizing your overall health and well-being.
So, how much protein do you actually need? The magic number isn’t one-size-fits-all. It depends on various factors like your age, activity level, and health goals. But as a general guideline, the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) suggests 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. For a 150-pound person, that translates to about 54 grams of protein daily. In my experience, one can double that amount to maximize the health benefits.
But here’s the catch: Many people, especially those following plant-based diets or leading sedentary lifestyles, fall short of this mark. And that’s where the problems can start.
Consequences of skimping on protein:
• Muscle loss: This is a major concern, especially for older adults and physically active individuals. When your body lacks enough protein, it starts breaking down muscle tissue for fuel, leading to decreased strength and function. This can lead to falls, and an inability to care for one’s self.
• Weaker immunity: Protein plays a crucial role in building and maintaining a strong immune system. So, a deficiency can leave you more susceptible to infections and illnesses, and can also lead to a longer recovery time once well.
• Satiety struggles: Protein is incredibly filling. When you don’t get enough, you may experience increased hunger cravings and struggle with portion control. This can lead to overeating and weight gain.
• Fatigue and lethargy: Protein helps regulate blood sugar levels, keeping you energized throughout the day. A deficiency can leave you feeling drained and lacking motivation.
So, how do you ensure you’re getting enough protein?
• Change it up: Don’t limit yourself to just chicken and eggs. Plant-based sources like beans, lentils, tofu, tempeh, nuts, and seeds are excellent protein providers.
• Spread it out: Aim for 20-30 grams of protein at each meal
and snack throughout the day. This helps keep your body in a constant state of repair and muscle building. You can also add a protein shake or drink as a healthy late-afternoon snack.
• Get creative: Add protein-rich ingredients to your favorite dishes. Think smoothies with nut butter, salads with quinoa, or scrambled eggs with avocado.
• Listen to your body: Pay attention to hunger cues and adjust your protein intake accordingly. If you’re feeling constantly hungry, tired, or weak, consider increasing your protein intake.
Remember, protein is not the enemy! It’s an essential nutrient that fuels your body and mind. By prioritizing enough protein in your diet, you’ll invest in your health and well-being for the long haul. So, go forth and protein-up! Your body will thank you for it.
