When the meal is complete, you’ll sit down and share a family-style lunch, including expertly-paired wine.
We’ve designed Michael Anthony’s Market Cafe to cater to virtually all of your cooking and dining desires. A cafe, Italian food market, and laid-back trattoria in the evenings, it offers a bountiful menu of small plates, a full bar, and an array of specialty Italian food and fresh meat items.
For lunch, come and enjoy informal dining featuring made-to-order sandwiches, salads, pasta and pizza. Or gather with family or friends for dinner, when the Market Cafe becomes a cozy, Italian trattoria boasting artisan pizzas, salads, and smaller portions of our chefs’ acclaimed pasta, meat, and seafood dishes. SPRING FESTIVALS
Ring in Spring with a variety of family friendly festivals and events.
Even after 33 years on this island, I always look forward to spring. It’s hard to explain why – especially around here, where mild winters mean you can pretty much do anything in January that you can in March or April. But for some reason I can’t explain, this spring just feels a little bit more exciting. Maybe it’s because this past winter was a little less mild than most that I’m so excited for spring. The warmer temperatures mean that the tennis courts, golf courses and beaches of the island are finally back in play. And speaking of play, I know I’m not the only person excited to see March Madness and the RBC Heritage coming up on the calendar. Those events serve as tentpoles to a season that include every food festival you can imagine, which definitely adds to the spring excitement.
But spring also means you don’t necessarily need a festival to have a good time. Getting out into the Lowcountry’s wilderness, getting together with friends for a cookout and a few drinks, or basking in the sunshine of outdoor dining, these are the things that spring is made of.
I’d imagine my friends in the local restaurant industry share my love of spring. This is when visitors start making their way back, filling our eateries and lifting their bottom line with their patronage. But it’s more than just what these guests do for a restaurant’s finances. No one goes into the restaurant business to get rich. They do it because they love welcoming people into their establishment and giving them the best experience they can.
For our local restaurant, spring means welcoming back a few thousand of their closest friends. So get out there, find your new favorite spot, make a new friend and let’s celebrate spring together.

It’s been a few years of pretty wild changes in the restaurant industry. As sick as we are all of talking about the pandemic, the fact is we’re still seeing long-term effects from a time period that basically shut down every restaurant in the Lowcountry for a few months. It’s been noticeably harder to find help. Patron behaviors have changed, with more people looking for outdoor seating. And oh yeah, that whole supply chain shutdown is still happening, driving costs through the roof.
“We spent the last two years going through so many different changes, now it’s like we’re getting back to focusing not just on survival, but on being creative again,” said Margaret Pearman. She and her brother Palmer Golson have taken the reins at Charlie’s since their dad found himself sidelined by health issues, but their creative spark has moved the restaurant forward for years.
Part of that spark has manifested in cooking classes, planned before COVID and ultimately postponed, but now roaring back into the kitchen. Loose and informal, held about once a month, these classes give small groups of 10 a chance to learn first-hand from Pearman and Chef Josh Castillo how
to make some of the restaurant’s most iconic dishes.
“We show them how to make classics like the flounder meuniere, the pate, the caramel cake… those have been really fun,” said Pearman.
The return of the cooking classes is, obviously, not the biggest change to hit this island institution, which has fed locals and visitors for decades. And no, we’re not talking about the expanded outdoor dining across the restaurant’s sprawling patio spaces. And we’re not talk about the technology upgrades that made takeout orders easier to handle.
We’re talking about what’s written on the sign out front.
As the restaurant emerges from the years of pandemic slowdown, it rises with a new moniker. Out is the old “Charlie’s L’Etoile Verte,” streamlined to the more straightforward “Charlie’s Coastal Bistro.”
“Quite honestly, all of the locals refer to us as Charlie’s anyway,” said Pearman about the name change. “With the number of new people in the area, we had some confusion about having a French name but not really being a classically French restaurant. But that’s never been what we are,” said
No matter what you call it, Charlie’s became an island institution for a reason.
Pearman. “We have a French slant to our cooking, but really it’s about offering 14 types of fresh fish in different sauces with different preparations.”
The old mouthful of a name came from Pearman’s father, Charlie Golson, and his travels through the Etoile district of Paris. Seeing so many of the neighborhood’s restaurant named “Restaurant d’Etoile” or “L’Etoile Rouge” inspired him to bring a little bit of the culinary enclave back with him. The name stuck, even as the restaurant’s French-inspired dishes evolved to reflect a more Lowcountry influence.
The name change, Pearman hopes, will clarify that somewhat. Even if the sign says Charlie’s Coastal Bistro, while the green star remains a part of the branding. “The green star serves as a welcoming symbol, so we haven’t taken it out of any of our logos,” said Pearman. “Still, this is one of the bigger moves we’ve made since my dad left. You have to open yourself up to a new generation. It’s not about dumbing us down, it’s about being clear who we are.”
And who they are, no matter what name they go by, is a restaurant that has earned its spot in the pantheon of iconic island restaurants. For decades, the approach that Charlie Golson took to local, fresh fish has set a standard for unrepentantly laid-back fine dining on the island. The dishes he pioneered still hold regular spots on the ever-revolving menu.
“Nothing has changed at all, we’re just rebranding,” said Pearman. “We’re still everybody’s special occasion restaurant that also serves as your neighborhood place. We mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people.”
And what they mean to most locals is a little bit of certainty in a world that has seen its share of changes in the last few years. “I certainly don’t want to lose any of our loyal customers, because they are so intertwined in what we do here. They love to come in and see the same faces and enjoy that comfort level,” said Pearman. “That took a long time for me to grasp… there’s a fine balance between keeping things intriguing and keeping them the same.”
It’s a balance that the new generation at the helm at Charlie’s has proven they can handle with skill and ease. The same elevated neighborhood experience greets you when you walk in today as it did 40 years ago. And it will continue to greet you, no matter what the sign says.

Call it the luck of the Irish that Tom Reilley just happened to find himself in Dublin. The patriarch of the island’s famed restaurateur family was, like many of us, fleeing the path of Matthew back in 2016 when he found himself in the charming Georgia town. More germane to our story, he found himself in need of a good meal.
His appetite brought him to Deano’s, an Italian restaurant owned by husband-and-wife team Robert and Jennifer Shaffer. Taken by the awardwinning cuisine, brick-hearth hospitality and sophisticated atmosphere, Reilley first assumed that this might be a chain.
“He asked me who the owner was and I just laughed and said, ‘Well that’s my picture on the wall,’” said Jennifer. The pair bonded over their mutual love for the restaurant business, and when the conversation ended with Reilley inviting the couple to check out Hilton Head at some point, the Shaffers jumped at the chance.
After all, while Deano’s might not be a chain, it’s certainly a concept that could make itself at home just about anywhere. The Shaffers purchased the original Dublin location in 2010, immediately refining both menu and experience based on their extensive experience as Culinary Institute of America grads and serial entrepreneurs.
What had been a pretty straightforward Italian bill of fare exploded with menu items ranging from chicken cordon bleu to Ribeye Steak. Customers and the world at large responded, with outlets from USA Today to Paula Deen raining accolades on the restaurant. The concept now well proven, looking beyond Dublin, Georgia was a natural next step.
Of course, as any restaurateur can tell you, that next step can often be a doozy.
“We came out this way and spent about six months trying to get something going, but couldn’t,” said Jennifer. “We were hitting wall after wall, but we just kept our heads down and kept moving forward.”
Then, in a stroke of kismet, a vacancy presented
infuses the island’s hottest address with the hospitality and award-winning cuisine that made it a staple in its hometown.
itself at the famous (or infamous, depending who you ask) Barmuda Triangle, right across the way from Reilley’s. Like many of us, Jennifer has memories of the spot previously occupied by Midici’s and Hilton Head Brewing Co. before that. “I’m having some flashbacks just standing here,” she said. “I can still see the DJ equipment when I close my eyes. We had way too much fun out here.”
Along with business partner Jim O’Sullivan, they were able to finally make Deano’s a reality on the island.
With their new restaurant, they’re looking to present a different kind of fun night out – one not defined by headache-inducing music, but by mouthwatering cuisine. As far as atmosphere, the classic stone and brick architecture of the 100-year-old Dublin location is being given an island-friendly remix at the Hilton Head location, with bright colors and a lively interior that takes full advantage of the restaurant’s generous size.
“I know the triangle is known for being a bar scene, so we’re getting a little bit more creative in the interior,” she said. “It’s a completely different aesthetic, but the menu will still be the same.”
Well, mostly the same. On Hilton Head Island, as in Dublin, the heart of the restaurant will be in its wood-fired oven. This old-school method is how Deano’s first earned its reputation for delectable award-winning pizza, but in true CIA grad fashion the Shaffers have pushed the limits of what it can do well beyond just pizza, to chicken and pork.
“We have so much fun with that oven,” she said. “It stays hot overnight, so we’ve tried so many different things in there. Because of the high heat, all of the proteins are always super juicy. As soon as you put it in there, it’s cooked. The flavor is trapped inside.”
The boundless creativity that the Shaffers brought to Deano’s when they first took it over 12 years ago will inform a menu that spins classic dishes from around the world in vibrant new directions. Fueled by the possibilities of wood-fired classic preparation, they’ll be dishing up special dishes that change day by day. “We’re going to focus on wood-oven specials,” she said. “Every time you come in, we want you to see something you didn’t see last time.”
But where the Hilton Head Island
expansion will truly set itself apart from the original is in the wealth of quality ingredients our coastal paradise presents. “We just have access to so much more here,” said Jennifer. “Fresher seafood, more farm-to-table dishes… we’re excited to get our hands in there.”
There’s no shortage of excitement on the island, either. For a restaurant that
adds a vital new dynamic to an iconic island location, or for the possibilities that are born when talented chefs tap into their creativity.

When you dine out or enjoy a cocktail at one of Hilton Head Island’s bars or restaurants, there’s a tacit agreement you enter into. The server or bartender agrees to bring you some of the finest food and drink you’ve ever experienced, treat you like the VIP you are, and maybe give you a few laughs.
In return, you agree to a few things. The first is a given – a tip. Money talks, as they say. A few bucks at the end of the evening is often the best reward you can give. But there is something else you agree to, something that may in fact be more important.
You agree to be nice.
• PHOTO BY ROB KAUFMAN“That’s it. Just be nice. Be patient. And don’t be rude,” said Jeff Mix, a veteran server and bartender at Charlie’s Coastal Bistro.
As the customer, you are of course always right. It is your prerogative to be rude, and certainly no one expects you to respond to horrendous service with a bank-breaking tip. But as a human being, you do kind of have a moral responsibility to mind your manners. Beyond simple courtesy, this can have a tremendous impact on the level of service you receive.
“I’ve had a lot of customers compliment me on my good service, which always encourages me to continue providing excellent service to them,” said Ann Finnerty, another veteran of local F&B with stints at Salty Dog, New York City Pizza, Fat Baby’s and more. “I’ve had customers give me large tips that were totally unexpected and made my whole day! Also, when they write online reviews that mentioned me by name.”
That respect you’re showing is a two-way street. Mix makes it a point to greet everyone who approaches the bar at Charlie’s, even if the rush only leaves him with enough time for a brief, “I’ll be with you in just a moment.” He’s also been known to keep a few Hershey Kisses behind the bar, to give to the fairer half of any couples in for date night.
“Always take care of the wife. Because if it’s your first time at a new place, and your wife likes it, you’re coming back,” he said. “It doesn’t matter if you liked it. She’s calling the shots.”
For Mix, it’s not just about bringing people back. It’s about the experience he’s able to give people, which builds the sort of fiercely loyal following he enjoys at Charlie’s. “I have the best customer base, bar none, because I’m nice to them,” he said.
That said, he warns of one annoying habit that will land you
on the “do not serve” list: yelling “Hey! Hey! Hey!” at a busy bartender. Instead, he urges you to simply be patient. You may get the odd bartender who isn’t as attentive as he is, but even then a simple, “excuse me” should suffice. And if that doesn’t work?
“One time someone just sat down and put a $20 in the air. That got my attention,” he said with a laugh.
Ultimately, it comes down to one simple secret: be nice. Your server is there for you. Your bartender is there for you.
Be there for them, and you’ll enjoy a night out you’ll never forget.
They’re here to serve you and give you the best experience of your life. Here’s how you can return the favor.

Proceeds from the festival’s silent auctions benefit the John & Valerie Curry Scholarship Fund which, to date, has given out over $120,000 in scholarships to students attending the Technical College of the Lowcountry’s (TCL) Culinary Institute of the South and University of South Carolina Beaufort’s (USCB) Hotel, Restaurant & Management Training Program. This year, the $12,000 in annual scholarship money is expected to increase to $20,000, according to longtime Hilton Head Island Wine & Food Festival Executive Director Jeff Gerber.
Thanks to the pandemic, the 2021 event was moved to September and quickly followed by the 2022 festival in March.
“It was really unique doing two festivals back-to-back,” notes Gerber. “We did two events in one fiscal year, so that led to a lot of profit and we were able to increase our scholarships. We’re really excited to be able to help support what we view as important parts of our community. This is an economy that’s built on tourism and we’re really excited to offer more help than we’ve been historically able to do.”
What began as an afternoon wine tasting in a parking lot nearly four decades ago has aged into one of the Island’s finest and most popular festivals attracting well-heeled guests who generally stay on Hilton Head for several days to a week or longer and add an estimated $4 million dollars to the local economy.
To keep it fresh, festival events have been carefully curated over the years and often leads to new ones.
“They are all unique,” Gerber explains. “Some are kind of similar, but they’ve all got a different vibe to them. We can’t just be the Wine & Food Festival anymore; we need to be like a great restaurant and welcoming to as many people as possible.”
“We did a Craft Beer Garden [at the Public Tasting] in 2021 and that was really, really well received,” he continues. “We added a Craft Beer Garden to Saturday and then that became the Craft Beer event on Sunday.”
“This is the great part,” he adds. “Because the beer event was so successful, we’re going to do an additional event this year, NOT the week of the festival. A Craft Beer & Music event on Saturday, June 3rd, at Coastal Discovery Museum.”
At press time, the plan for this new summer event is to have about 40 different breweries on-site with a variety of local and regional bands. Tickets will run $25-$35 with drinks and food purchased separately.
“The goal is to grow it into a two- or three-day event,” Gerber says. “If you look at the craft beer industry, there are over 8,700 breweries in America and only 95 in South Carolina, the last time I checked. We said, ‘Somebody’s going to do it at the beach – we might as well bring it to Hilton Head instead of somewhere else!’ And I think there are a lot of great musicians on the Island, but not great musical events…yet.”
All tickets for the Hilton Head Island Wine & Food Festival must be purchased online at hiltonheadwineandfood.com and are expected to sell out quickly. No tickets will be sold at the door. For festival details and information on the June Craft Beer & Music event, call (843) 301-9256.

To the thousands who live here and the millions who visit every year, summer tastes a lot like the deliriously sweet tang of an Italian ice, the creamy delectability of a frozen custard or even the best of both worlds found in a gelati. Our memories, precious moments of falling in love with Hilton Head, come flooding back when the salt-scented breeze meets the sweetness of something cold from Rita’s Italian Ice.
“It’s become a staple of Hilton Head,” said David Tremarelli, who opened the shop three decades ago shortly after moving from outside of Philadelphia. “And now we’re serving the kids of the kids who used to come here.”
This rite of passage has become part of countless family traditions, sampling your way through the litany of flavors until you’ve found your favorite. (At the risk of editorializing, the correct answer is cherry limeade, but your mileage may vary). You might be more of a mango strawberry. Maybe your summer memories taste like green apple.
“We have in the neighborhood of 30 flavors, so if you need a suggestion, we can offer it,” said Tremarelli. Generally
you’ll see between 8 and 12 of those flavors on any given day, all made fresh that morning. “People think we come in, flip on the light switch and open the doors, but we make the product we sell.”
“The crazy thing is how much custard we sell. Our soft-serve custard is so rich and creamy you may never again scream for ice cream,” added David’s wife Karen.
When the couple first decided to open the franchise on Hilton Head, their “perfect location” in a Coligny kiosk already housed a kite shop. “We had to buy the kite shop to open Rita’s, “ joked David. Karen ran Coligny Kite and Flag for 28 years, which they moved to a larger inline location in Coligny which housed the kiosk’s ice-making operation.
With Karen selling her shop, they were able to move to their new second location at the base of the bridge across Coligny’s stunning koi pond. And that wasn’t the only big change to hit the island’s mainstay Italian ice stand in recent years.
“We recently had a request for a job from our first legacy employee, which means our first hire whose parent worked here,” said David. “That makes you feel
old, so I thought it’s definitely time to retire.”
Fortunately, he had a successor already hand-picked. Son Chip has been a part of the kiosk since he was 13 years old, helping to make the ice, scooping, preparing ingredients and working his way up. With David eyeing retirement, Chip is all set to take the reins.
“My dad taught me everything about running the business. I just shadowed him and learned,” he said. It never felt like a job. It got easier and easier every year.”
Right now, Chip is running the day-today operations of both locations, joking that “I’m allowing my dad to retire.” And with a 30-year legacy to uphold, he knows that Rita’s is a place where you can always find ways to improve, but there are some things that are already too perfect to change.
“It never feels like the store is complete; there’s always something we can do,” he said. “I will definitely try some new things, but there’s a lot we’ll keep.”
Across two stores and now two generations, Rita’s Italian Ice will continue to make summer a little bit sweeter for all of us.

How do you describe a group of guys like the musical force that is the Chilly Willy Band?
“We’re a bunch of knuckleheads,” said Fred Warren. “The best way I can describe the relationship is it’s like poker night. We do it because it’s fun.”
Ante up and meet the current lineup of the ever-evolving band.
David Carrol, drums. The troublemaker. “He has more energy than the Energizer Bunny, but that’s what you want in a drummer,” said Warren.
David Skinner, saxophone. The showman. “He is a real crowd-pleaser. He comes from a jazz orientation but loves dance music.”
David Warren, guitar. The professor. “He plays anything with strings on it, and he sees things before they happen. There’s a connection to the music that goes deep; it’s like telepathy.”
J. Howard Duff, vocals. The front man. “Howard comes from a really interesting musical background, going through the punk scene but also deeply steeped in blues and gospel. And he has a big sense of humor.”
Jeff Rigg, keyboards. The ambassador. “Probably the nicest person I ever met. It took a few years to even wrap my arms around the fact that he’s all he seems to be. He plays with a number of different bands, and he’s very active in the musical community.”
Jim Hall, bass. The new guy. “He has added a little bit more of a rock and roll sensibility to the band. Musically and personality wise, he has fit in perfectly.”
Fred Warren, guitar. The bus driver. “It can be hard to get seven people in the same room, in the same key, in the same tempo. Herding cats is the term for it.”
Honorable mention: Ed Switila, founding member and original percussionist. “He’s been a great musical amigo.”
The Chilly Willy Band has kept the Lowcountry dancing for more than 30 years.
Long-time locals will remember the epic musical fundraiser that was Jamming for Jerry’s Kids. Held at the old Hilton Head Inn, this Labor Day tradition not only helped raise money for a good cause, it gave the island’s nascent musical scene find a nucleus around which it could grow.
It was at one of these events in 1989 that four guys came together to see if the fun they had jamming together would translate into a band. It turns out, it translated into something more. It translated into a party that is still jumping more than 30 years later.
“If we’re having fun, the audience is having fun,” said Fred Warren, perfectly encapsulating the sheer exuberance which defined every show since. This is far more than just a band. Somewhat literally.
“We’re not a band anymore, we’re an orchestra,” Warren laughed. “I really enjoy the bigger sound we produce now, especially when playing swing blues, which is more horn-oriented. I find it a lot more interesting to have different soloists on stage.
And while each member of the band brings a deep musicality to their role, it’s not their craft that fuels the Chilly Willy Band party.
“Oftentimes, we’re looking for personality first, then musicality second,” said Warren. “That seems to have been a good formula for us.”
Even though some personnel have come and gone, the band’s lineup has always kept true to the spirit that brought it together in the first place. This is just a bunch of musicians having fun and challenging each other to keep the party humming.
There’s never a setlist at a Chilly Willy Band show. With a few knowing nods and whispered remarks between bandmates,
you may seem the guys slip between Eric Clapton and George Gershwin, from the proto-rock of Big Joe Turner to the massive electric sound of Muddy Waters. It all seems to flow from one to another, the collective will of the band made into music.
“I couldn’t imagine working off of a song list,” said Warren. “You kind of get a sixth sense about it, where three-quarters of the way through a song a bell goes off and I’m thinking, ‘What are we going to do next?’”
That versatility has helped The Chilly Willy Band still fresh and vital through the decades. When you have a band that can blow the doors off of a massive community festival, then slip into something classier for a jazz brunch, the result is a party that never stops.
“We take request when possible,” said Warren, adding with a laugh, “except Freebird. We’re also very open to having other musicians on stage and we always have been. And we enjoy that because it takes us in different directions. This is a nice musical community where a lot of us know each other. That spices things up.”
That spice has served as the perfect seasoning for a dish best served cold. Or at least Chilly. “It’s been a fun name for years. It’s definitely one that people remember,” said Warren. If they don’t remember the name, then they’ll certainly remember the fun they had watching a group of musical brothers who play together for one simple reason: it’s always a party. “That’s one of the reasons we’ve been successful over the years. We’ve always kept it fun as opposed to doing it full time,” he said.
Follow The Chilly Willy Band on Facebook to see where the party is headed next.

Spring is springing in full force here on our beautiful island. Nature is coming back to life and the call to enjoy our trails, beaches, and outdoor dining is loud and clear. To me, this time of year is a natural fresh start. New year’s resolutions may be wearing thin and old habits may be starting to creep back into our daily lives. Let’s take nature’s cue and focus on a few small things to start fresh again.
Habit 1: Hydrate! I can’t stress enough how important it is to drink your water. How much is enough? How much is necessary? There is much debate about how to calculate your hydration needs, but my rule of thumb is to keep it simple. There are three times to prioritize drinking water: first thing in the morning, anytime you eat, and anytime you sweat. An entire glass of water when you first wake up; before coffee, before breakfast, on a completely empty stomach. That first 8 ounces of water will do wonders to alert your mind, get your bowels moving, and get your digestive system ready to do its job all day long. Follow that with a glass of water any time you are eating. Whether it’s a full meal or a snack, just preempt any food with a full glass of water. You will also need a glass anytime you are sweaty to replenish what you have lost.
Habit 2: Protein! Every single meal, your first question should be: Where is my protein? Especially first thing in the morning, you want to have a lean protein as the foundation for your meals. But protein doesn’t just mean meat and powders. Other quality choices that are high in protein include eggs, almonds, cottage cheese, lentils, and greek yogurt.
Habit 3: Greens! Our grandmothers had it right when they harped on us to eat our veggies. They were right, a diet that includes leafy greens at each meal is one that leads to a long and healthy life. And that doesn’t mean a side of boring broccoli. You can add a handful of spinach to any smoothie. Yes, it will change the color but the taste remains the same. Also consider upgrading your sandwich topping from a leaf of lettuce to a handful of sprouts and switch your chips to kale chips.
Habit 4: Sweat! I have a close friend who also happens to be a doctor and she gave me some sage advice. The best exercise program for you is the one you will do. What do you
enjoy? What makes you feel strong? Limber? Youthful? We are so fortunate here on the island that we can enjoy trail walks, bike rides, beach yoga, strength training, and many other options without having to look too far. The older we get the more important it is to continue strength training and continue stretching. A strong and limber body can endure many challenges, and will also look and feel great for a long time.

Few places offer so many fun-filled ways to celebrate the season as Hilton Head Island and the surrounding area. Ring in spring with a variety of family-friendly festivals, parades and events showcasing the region’s diverse culture, best artists and bands, delicious food and Southern spirit.
A hundred thousand welcomes.
In 1983, legendary local Tom Reilley, along with a few friends and family, staged an impromptu St. Patrick’s Day Parade from Kasey’s Krustaceans (later Remy’s) to his namesake bar and grill which had opened a year earlier in the former Gallery of Shops on the south end of the Island.
The small procession, which included a few vehicles and a miniature fire truck, attracted around 30 spectators, as well as local law enforcement for marching without a permit. Fastforward 40 years and the permit issues are resolved with an estimated 35,000 spectators lining the streets of Pope Avenue to watch South Carolina’s longest running St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Recognized as one of the Top 20 Tourism Events in the Southeast, the parade now features hundreds of floats and marching groups representing local businesses and charities, high school and university marching bands, the U.S. Marine Corps Band from Parris Island, pipe and drum bands, local dignitaries, animal contingencies and the always popular antics of the Shriners.
Special guests have included the iconic Budweiser Clydesdales, military jet flyovers, the Planter’s Peanut Nutmobile with Mr. Peanut, the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile and Nashville recording star Michelle Murray.
Gabrielle Muething has been involved with the parade for decades and now serves as Co-Chair of the Parade Committee responsible for planning the annual event, as well as naming each year’s Grand Marshal. Individuals are selected for their charitable work in the community with the Sashing Ceremony occurring in February at Reilley’s Bar & Grill in Reilley’s Plaza, across the street from the restaurant’s original location. While parade planning was handed off to a committee early on in its history, Tom Reilley is still a staunch supporter of the event and was named Grand
Marshal in 1993.
After a two-year hiatus, in 2022 the annual St Patrick’s Day Parade expanded into a two-day Irishfest complete with a free concert on Saturday in Lowcountry Celebration Park followed by the Parade on Sunday afternoon.
The 2nd Annual Irish Concert in the Park on Saturday, March 11, features the return of Boston Irish Rock Band The Fenian Sons, as well as the Boston Police Gaelic Column of Pipes and Drums and the Pipes & Drums of The Emerald Society of the New York City Police Department from 4-7 p.m.
Then, on Sunday, March 12, don your green and head over early to stake out your spot for the 38th Hilton Head Ireland St. Patrick’s Day Parade which steps out from the staging area at Lowcountry Celebration Park at 3 p.m. and marches down Pope Avenue to Office Park Road, past Reilley’s Plaza.
The same pipe and drum bands featured in Saturday’s concert often stop in to perform at Reilley’s on Friday night and then return to the restaurant on Sunday evening after the parade.
“You can’t help but get chills,” says Muething. “They’ll march in through the restaurant up and down the aisles and around the bar. It’s just amazing. If there is more than one band, they will perform together.”

Every spring, wings are the thing when the Island Rec. Center hosts its annual Wingfest at Lowcountry Celebration Park from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
Now in its 26th year, the Saturday, March 18th festival features 20-25 local restaurants cooking over 6,500 pounds of chicken wings in a semi-friendly competition to win the popular and
judge’s votes. Combined with multiple musical acts, a Kids Zone and crazy contests, this annual party in the park attracts a large, all-ages crowd eager to enjoy food, music and family fun.
Last year, the judges awarded One Hot Mama’s the gold medal – the eighth title win for the restaurant – for their Hawaii 5-0 wings with Howell Chase and Driftwood Eatery placing second and third. Meanwhile, the people voted Coconutz the winner with One Hot Mama’s and GW’s rounding out the top three.
While the wing competition is only open to restaurants and businesses, attendees are welcome to go head-to-head in other challenges, including the Kid’s Wing Bobbing Competition – with plastic wings hidden in whipped cream – and the Adult Wing Eating Contest.
A trio of bands provide the soundtrack throughout this day of eating, drinking and dancing, while the younger crowd can burn off some calories bouncing around in the Kid’s Zone, scaling the Rock Climbing wall or catching air on the Bungee Jump.
Wingfest admission is $10 per adult and free for children under 11. Tickets must be purchased inside the gate for food, drinks and activities and are $1 each. Wings require 2 tickets; non-wing food is available for 2-8 tickets; soft drinks and water are 3 tickets; beer/wine ranges from 4-7 tickets; liquor is 6-8 tickets; the Kid’s Zone is 10 tickets with a multiple child discount offered; and the Bungee Jump/Rock Climbing ranges from 6-10 tickets.
To save time and money, a variety of discounted admission and ticket packages can be ordered online up to one week prior to the festival. From the Wingfest for 2 “Sampler” Package which
includes admission for two adults plus 40 tickets to the Wingfest for 4 “Group” Package with admission for four adults and 120 tickets, it’s a good idea to plan ahead and make the most of the day. Physical tickets will not be provided in advance; check in at the entrance to pick up pre-ordered packages.
At the end of the day, everyone is a winner at Wingfest! Proceeds from the event benefit the Recreation Association’s Carmines Family Recreation Scholarship Fund ensuring no child is denied recreational opportunities due to financial limitations.
For more information the 26th Wingfest or to pre-order tickets, visit hiltonheadwingfest.com or call (843) 681-7273.
On Saturday, May 13th, celebrate the unique “state of mind” found only along the banks of the May River during the 43rd Anniversary Bluffton Mayfest.
Formerly known as the Bluffton Village Festival, this annual event coordinated by The Rotary Club of Bluffton features more than 150 local and regional artists and crafters, food and drink vendors, live entertainment on multiple stages, cute kids and ugly dogs scattered throughout Old Town. Always held on the Saturday before Mother’s Day, it’s the perfect place to pick up a gift or spend some quality family time shopping, eating, drinking, playing, dancing or singing along to your favorite bands.
According to Rotary Club President Dan Ciuffreda, artists and craftspeople will be set up along Calhoun Street with food from more than two-dozen restaurants and food trucks available for purchase in Martin Family Park and along Bridge Street. Beer
tents are also set up in the park, as well as in the parking lot behind May River Excursions and on the corner of Calhoun and Lawrence Streets.
This year’s featured artist is Lauren Terrett, a painter whose work has evolved into a fast and furious, bold and colorful, impressionistic style. During Mayfest, she may be in a prominent location at the festival entrance on Calhoun or further down the street at The Society of Bluffton Artists (SoBA) Gallery or La Petite Gallery where her work is displayed.
The Bluffton School of Dance traditionally kicks off the daylong entertainment lineup on the Main Stage in Martin Park with bands simultaneously performing on the Second Stage located on Bridge Street and a third area behind May River Excursions off Bridge Street.
The Pavilion at Martin Family Park also provides shade for the afternoon Pie Eating Contest while the ugly dogs have their day at the Heyward House next door. The Kentucky Derby Hat Parade may take place again this year but the fate of the Donut Eating Contest, cancelled after Covid, is literally hanging in the air.
It’s no accident that the Mayfest setup is similar to October’s Historic Bluffton Arts & Seafood Festival. Both The Rotary Club and the fall festival share many of the same committee and board members.
“It makes it a lot easier because we know it works,” says Ciuffreda. “Last year was the first year we changed the format a little bit for Mayfest, and it worked to keep the traffic moving.”
“It’s a great location, he adds. “You have food on each street, drinks on each street and entertainment. It’s a good variety and I think that’s what makes it successful.”
With a motto of “Service Above Self,” the Rotary Club of Bluffton provides manpower for the Arts & Seafood Festival in exchange for sales from the beer tents. The proceeds from both events are then put into the Charitable Community Account and used to support various organizations and projects here, across the nation and internationally. For instance, Rotary has recently supported local Students of the Month, Habitat for Humanity and Bluffton Self Help, in addition to victims of the flooding in Kentucky and Ronald McDonald House.
Mayfest admission is free, as is parking and the trolleys transporting attendees from Red Cedar Elementary School to multiple locations in Old Town. For updated information on vendors, entertainment, volunteering or joining The Rotary Club of Bluffton, call (843) 540-7957or visit blufftonrotary.org or check out the Bluffton Mayfest Facebook page.
