Hi friends, March broke to us the news of Quarter-3 Best Centre Award coming to Tata Strive Skill Development Centre, Pune! Wow! This was possible because of the endless efforts of the entire team of Pune and the relentless support from our Partner – Tata Communications. We at Tata STRIVE always look forward to an occasion to talk about our strengths, our achievements and we do know that none of this is possible without the support that we get from people behind the curtain. The program & partnerships team, the design team, the facilitator development team, the Quality team, the IT support and many of our Mentors, Guest lecturers and placement partners who have, in their own manner, helped us bring this Award home. Big thanks to all of them. Before I sign off, I would like to give a special mention to our 1st Front office Associate batch, completing their Assessment on 30th March and are now on their way to embark upon their career path. So here, I leave you with this edition of strive@pune. Keep your eyes on the ‘Kalam se Column tak’ where you get to read words of wisdom from our Coaching Guru - Bhaskar Natarajan. Read how interestingly we get to know the concept of knowing a learner's adaptability from a Facilitator's perspective with the help of a simple examples. Happy reading! -

How do you shop for ‘Good Quality Tomatoes’? What does that got to do with being an ‘Employability Skills Facilitator’? In the summer of 2016, my four-year-old daughter, Maanvitha, was accompanying me to regular vegetable vendor’s shop near our home at Bangalore. I was picking up tomatoes one after the other. After carefully examining them, I started collecting few in the basket provided by the shop keeper and discarded the rest. That’s when Maanvitha asked, “Daddy, how do you know this is a good tomato? Who taught you the difference?” I couldn’t give her any satisfactory answer at that time. However, these two simple yet powerful questions made me ponder on many things on what we do in Skill Development space and while we train these youths for entry level employment opportunities. Let us closely examine the following aspects on this shopping experience: - I didn’t carry any ‘Sample / IDEAL Tomato’ to ‘compare’ or/and ‘contrast’ the good ones from the rest. - I also visually ‘checked’ for any holes (worm infestation) or discoloration of skin (other than deep red or shades of red) or feel ‘fresh’ when I touch – Are they ALIVE? - I applied adequate ‘pressure’ (hard enough but not so much that ruptures the skin) to know the status of Tomato – ‘Ripe’ or ‘Raw’. o If it is too soft (ripe), then not suitable for cooking o If it is too hard (raw), then also not suitable for immediate needs - I’m sure, based on your upbringing and the part of India you come from, you’ll have your own taste for picking the ‘Right Tomato’ When I draw inspiration from this daily life incident and apply to my role as an ‘Employability Skills Facilitator’, I have the following aspects to take care of: - Alive (‘I am’) – How ‘Lively’ are they in - known as well unknown - environments? Are my students ‘Alive’ in the class. When a visitor is at the premises, do each one of them feel comfortable in making a ‘Small Talk’ i.e. Engaging in a social conversation that makes the stranger feel comfortable in the new premises. Do they believe that ‘Any Stranger is a potential customer’, this means an opportunity to engage with the customer? - Aware (‘I Can’) – How well they know about their surroundings? When asked questions on ‘Current affairs’ in the country / Industry or the job area that they are specialising on / ‘Opinions’ and ‘Suggestions’ on issues or challenges faced – they should volunteer to speak up in the class – then they are Situationally ‘Aware’ and have an independent thinking (enough to have an Opinion on things that matter to them) - Awake (‘I Will’) – How do they perform under pressure? Do they accept difficult ‘Challenges’ / ‘Projects’ / ‘stretch targets’ and complete them without giving up midway? When I tell that they are not ‘ready yet’ to compete in certain challenges – the real test would be – do they agree with me or take it as an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to accomplish these difficult tasks? What ‘aspects’ I need to focus on as an Employability Skills Facilitator? - My Ideal Tomato? – Can I draft a ‘Job Description’ or ‘Role Description’ of the job / role my students would ideally fit in? o Which company / organisation I’d like my students join and thrive in for a long career? o If I’m the recruiter / HR representative of this organisation what kind of person I’d like to hire? o If I’m the supervisor, what kind of skills in these students would make my job/role easier and I can focus on other valuable aspects of the career / job? - Current Reality? – where are they currently? What kind of gaps do I experience? Are they Alive, Aware and Awake? - My Action Plan? – What is my action plan to bridge the gap between the above two? So, good luck with your upcoming shopping expedition. Just a thought, what if you are doing ‘Online Shopping’ – How would you select your ‘Good quality Tomatoes?’ – until we meet again, soon! Cheers!

Strength grows in the moments when you think you can’t go on, but you keep going anyway! Ganesh Bhokare is from Solapur. He lives with his parents and has three siblings. After 10th he wanted to complete further education and pursue his career in healthcare sector. Due to financial challenges he had to drop out and start working, as his father is contract labour who works on daily wages. Thus he could not focus on his studies and it wasn’t affordable to him either. He started working in a coffee stall in Solapur while having his dream in his mind. But soon he was so disappointed, as he couldn’t earn well. Then one day he decided moving out of town and get a better job to support his family. Then he got an opportunity to work as a household worker. He picked this job and left Solapur and went to Belgaum. Soon after he left to Goa, thinking this will help him to get better. But nothing changed for him and he was completely shattered. He was unable to see his future growth. Around the same time, he came to know about Tata STRIVE from one of his friend, Ganesh was delighted to know that all the courses are sponsored and he doesn’t need a pay a single penny. Inquisitive Ganesh got to know about General Duty Assistant course and was happy to know that he will get into healthcare sector. Without wasting time, he enrolled himself for the course and decided to make some compromises for 3 months so that he could complete the course. Ganesh was bit scared knowing that the content is in English and he hardly knew an alphabet. But the entire journey of the course was an awesome experience for him. Whether it’s Domain or YDM, Ganesh showed zeal of learning and completed the course. Coaching played a major part in making him confident. He could see his life transforming. Ganesh did a lot of hard work to understand each and every concept and deliver it successfully. He is placed as a ‘General Duty Assistant’ at Nightingale Home Health Care. He is responsible for screening of patients suffering from lifestyle diseases in various urban communities, providing access to free diagnosis & treatment of the screened individuals.

8th March is celebrated is International Women’s Day. Women of TSSDC Pune came up with a perfect plan to celebrate Women’s Day. Instead of celebrating for a day, why not celebrate womanhood for the entire week? Day1 started with Fun games activities to break the ice, in which all the learners enjoyed and won prizes. Day 2 became quite tough for learners as it was a step for them to become tougher by Self Defence Session. 3rd day of the week they got a chance to put their best foot forward in Showcase Your Talent activity. The women at TSSDC Pune made Posters on Day 4 to wish all the women around though Poster Making Activity. We had a Guest Lecture of Dr. Aditte and Dr. Anirudh on Women’s Health for Day 5. Last day of Women’s Day week ended with never ending smile, everyone participated for Best Dress Competition. Kabita Gurung and Amrita Fernandes being the key made all this week flow smooth. Pallavi, Suvarna, Sushma, Shruti and Snehal took part in the activities.

I think we judge talent wrong. What do we see as talent? I think I have made the same mistake myself. We judge talent by people's ability to strike a cricket ball. The sweetness, the timing. That's the only thing we see as talent. Things like determination, courage, discipline, temperament, these are also talent. - Rahul Dravid
