Hi! COVID19 has changed quite a few things in our approach and way of doing things but what it could not change is the fact that the show can never stop and it never will! We have quickly moved to the Blended learning model where in there is a synchronous and an asynchronous mode of learning. With this, even the way in which we conducted our sessions, coaching, assessments undergo a change. Read about it more while we have our Design & Incubation lead Ajita Karve talk about it. July witnessed the celebration of World Youth Skills Day on 15th and it was enthralling to see 100+ learners connect together to celebrate the theme of “Skills for a resilient Youth – COVID19 & beyond!” Our partners, Shihtij Agrawal CEO, Sahyadri farms and Namrata Tamhankar from Salon Apple humbly joined us to share their views on importance of skilling on this day. More on the further pages.

I am Pravin Jambhale from Android batch 8. I have completed my batch in November 2018. Before joining Tata STRIVE, I was looking for a job as an Android app developer. I got to know about this course from my friend Kartikey Tiwari.
Pravin Jambhale Batch: AAD_0008
The journey with Tata STRIVE was just for 3 months but every day of the training was very meaningful. I had basic knowledge of Android development before joining this course. Yes, of course, this course was free but there was no compromise in the quality and knowledge provided. We learnt Android development from its scratch till the app release on Play Store from Sagar sir and Chandan sir. We got to learn many useful concepts like code reusability, soft coding and hard coding etc. We also developed our own Android app by the end of the course for a customer meeting his requirements. Along with our Android sessions, we also had YDM sessions which we loved the most that helped us to build our communication skills and Interview preparations techniques. All thanks to Amrita ma'am as these sessions helped me to develop my overall personality and get a job in Infosys, Pune. Currently, i am placed as a Technology support executive at Infosys. Tata STRIVE has provided me essential knowledge and skills to achieve my career goals. I am also fortunate to make life long friends in this short journey who are along with me in my IT career. I am also thankful to Sameet sir for ensuring quality training to all the learners. Thank you to the entire team at Tata STRIVE, Pune.

The ‘Blended Learning’ journey @ STRIVE
There are a lot of different strategies for learning. The education
sector has benefited from a great many pioneers and the way our learners are taught today is very different from how they were taught fifty or even twenty-five years ago. Much of this innovation has been related to the growth of technology. Computers have become extremely valuable teaching tools and have opened up a whole new world of online learning.
Blended Learning is designed as a series of ‘learning events’ strung together cohesively on a well-defined learning path.
I am sure most of us have been hearing buzz words such as technology-based learning, digital learning, blended learning etc. over the last few months. None of these are new phenomena; however, the COVID 19 scenario has given these methodologies a shot in the arm and made them a household reality in the recent past. Technology-based learning is no longer privy to a select few basis their economic status or geographical location. There was an ask for a heady mixture of affordable technology, coupled with a need to reach out to the remotest learners and ensure that their needs are taken care of, especially in trying times. And, this multi-dimensional, multi-method learning showed the capability to reach most of the nooks and crannies of our world at large. Thanks to the ‘new normal’, most of us are at the receiving end of the different aspect of remote working/collaborating/learning. In short, we are experiencing a totally new way of working. Words and concepts related to e-learning, technology-enabled learning, self-paced learning, blended learning, simulation-based learning …and more, are being discussed interchangeably in the (virtual!) hallways and water holes. This note is an attempt to demystify the make-up of blended learning and capture STRIVE’s journey into this way of life. The broader meaning of learning is about the assimilation of new facts/concepts, exposure to new processes, behaviors, skills, values, attitudes, and preferences and building capability to apply these in day to day life. It requires active participation by the learner, opportunities for reflection, requires learners’ motivation and cognitive engagement to be sustained learning process. And hence, irrespective of the method of deployment, these aspects need to be built into the teaching-learning practices. These form the very cornerstones of ‘Blended Learning’.
7
Let’s start by deciphering what does ‘Blended Learning’ really constitute. Wikipedia defines Blended Learning as “Blended learning is an approach to education that combines online educational materials and opportunities for interaction online with traditional place-based classroom methods. It requires the physical presence of both teacher and student, with some elements of student control over time, place, path, or pace.”. Nuances from this definition are the basis of the guiding principles on which Blended content has been built at Tata STRIVE. Blended learning at STRIVE is designed as a series of ‘learning events’ strung together cohesively on a well-defined learning path. It comprises of: Asynchronous learning events: This kind of learning is designed to take place basis the learner’s schedule, but within an ideal duration specified by the facilitator. It is selfdirected and self-paced learning. For example, when learners get a reading material to go through, their learning happens asynchronously. Synchronous learning events: This is the kind of learning that happens in real-time. This means that learners and facilitator interact in an online session. In short, it is the same time, same place learning. The blended learning journey at STRIVE was, of course, no less than an adventure. Seldom before was an instance (in my experience) when a cross-functional taskforce with varying competencies, experience and knowledge came together to create a learning experience. An experience that does justice to pedagogy, is practical, simple enough to absorb, seamlessly deployable and accessed on a digital platform and more importantly works around the many constraints presented by the availability (or lack) of resources, technology and time.

And we at STRIVE did it- the ‘AGILE’ way! (Agile is an exciting concept too – with several layers, but that’s for another article – some other day!) This journey started with a series of defined milestones, and to know more, keep watching this space! Compilation: Amrita Fernandes

WYSD is celebrated globally on 15th July. The celebration aims to raise awareness about the importance of technical, vocational education training and the development of other skills for employment, entrepreneurship, and to highlight the role of skilled youth in addressing current and future global challenges.
