Zakopane Zakopane – is the highest located town in Poland. It is located at the foot of the Tatra Mountains – the only mountain range of Alpine characteristics in this part of Europe. The town is an important venue for winter sport activities – hence its unofficial name: ‘the Winter Capital of Poland’. Zakopane had remained a shepherds’ settlement until the 19th century. At that time, thanks to its unique climate characteristics, a period of dynamic changes started.

In the late 19th century it became an important and often-visited culture center, with a lot of noble and famous people deciding to move in. The following years brought quick progress to tourism and mountaineering. It was at this time (1909) when the TOPR (the Tatra Voluntary Emergency Unit) was established.

The town has been a popular venue for many important sport events. Every year it plays host to the Ski Jumping World Cup competition. There have also been three World Skiing Championship tournaments in Zakopane (1929, 1939, and 1962) as well as one Alpine Skiing World Championship tournament (in 1939). The town was also a candidate to hosting the 2006 Winter Olympics. There are many tourist attractions in the area, the most popular of which are: a cable car to Mount Kasprowy Wierch, the Gubalowka Hill funicular, and one of the most beautiful ski jumping sites in the world – the Wielka Krokiew. The town is also famous for the number of cultural events – The International Highland Folklore Festival, The Call of the Tatras Festival, jazz festivals and many more. Zakopane is the only town in Poland where a smooth ride down the slope may have its end at the doorstep of a theatre.

Location: The Orla Willa is a traditional tourist house built in 1900-1901.

The Orla Willa is located in Zakopane in Kościeliska Street – the oldest street in town. Location: This building of long tradition, erected in 1894, was one of the first hotels in Zakopane. Renovated in 1996, preserves the original interior design and details.

Kościelisko Kościelisko - This area located at the foot of the Gubałowka Ridge is the gate to the Western Tatras. It is one of the most beautiful mountainous areas in Poland.

The district consists of three villages – Koscielisko, Dzianisz, and Witow.

A number of local families have their roots in this area. The visitors can admire the relics of few-centuries-old history, the still-alive tradition, authentic folk art, and historic shepherd buildings.

The region is especially proud of its two mountain valleys: Dolina Kościeliska (the Koscieliska Valley) - he most beautiful and the largest (it’s about 9km long) valley of the Polish Tatras. It has always brought inspiration to poets, writers, painters, film makers, and the continuously growing number of visitors. With the variety of its surroundings and unique character of its flora and fauna the Koscieliska Valley becomes an open-to-all wonder of nature.

Dolina Chochołowska (The Chocholowska Valley) – is the longest (10kms long) valley of the Polish Tatra Mountains. It is home to many species of wild animals. Bears, deer, Alpine marmots and many other creatures find a peaceful place to live here. The mountain grassland areas with a number of shepherd-huts are the main tourist attraction. Some of the lands are still in use by the shepherds, so you often have a chance to see a highlander with its herd of sheep walking up in the hills although this tradition has been limited due to the preservation of nature in the National Park. The valley in spring time impresses all visitors with its grasslands covered with zillions of crocuses appearing everywhere.

Some of the most precious things about the Koscielisko area are: the beauty and variety of its terrain, a number of hiking trails to major points in the Tatras which begin here, great accommodation options, and sporting venues and activity offer.

Poronin Poronin – The municipality is located only 7 kilometers away from Zakopane, at the merging point of two mountain streams – the Zakopianka and the Poroniec.

Dunajec River begins. The town of Poronin lies right next to the main CracowZakopane road. The train going along the same route also stops at the Poronin Train Station. All visitors going to the former Polish-Slovakian border in Lysa Polana as well as those who plan to get to the Morskie Oko Lake always travel thorough this little town. Due to specific location, the early settlements in this area dealt mainly with sheep keeping and agriculture. Sheep keeping traditions are still carefully cultivated and cherished. In many families, these values are passed on to future generations. Nowadays, tourism has dominated the everyday life in the region. In the 19th century Poronin was even more popular than Zakopane. Now, it offers over 10 thousand places to stay with a variety of standards to choose from - guest houses, apartments, farm B&Bs, and many other. We take our pride in the ‘Poroniańskie Lato’ (the Poronin Summer Fest) – a four-day event full of regional contests, exhibitions, and folk bands performing live on stage. The ‘Kumoterska Gońba’ (the Family and Friends’ Folk Races) with ski-ring competition take place every winter following the parade of traditionally dressed citizens. In August all visitors are welcome to the yearly „Bear, Honey, and Beekeepers’ Day”. The town’s coat of arms features a brown bear because it is one of the most important animals to the region. Poronin municipality is located close to the Tatra Mountains, in the Malopolska voivodeship.

The municipality includes eight neighborhoods: Bustryk, Male Ciche, Murzasichle, Nowe Bystre, Stasikowka, Suche, Poronin and Zab. It is located next to the town of Zakopane and Koscielisko, Bialy Dunajec, Bukowina Tatrzanska and Czarny Dunajec municipalities. The region of Poronin features beautiful and picturesque areas of the Rocky Podhale. The hills and slopes of the Galicowa Grapa as well as the Gubalowka mountain range are a perfect spot for summer walks and hikes or winter sports like skiing or skitouring. The surrounding Tatras are perfect for any mountain tourism.

The municipality features numerous examples of traditional architecture of religious and non-religious character. The region is proud of its traditions and culture – the most popular assets shared with inhabitants and visitors in order to popularize the family traditions and help educate the new generations about national identity and the love of the home country.

The Poronin Summer (Poronianskie Lato) is one of the most important cultural events of the year in the region. In the course of a few days, the festival features regional music bands from the Podhale region as well as other regions of Poland and the rest of the world. The days are full of competitions and other attractions.

New books are also promoted. The region is an important religious center of Poland. Therefore the days abound in religious events with the main 22nd of July local church fair. Every July, Municipal Center of Culture in Poronin holds a family, alcohol-free street party “Poronianskie Spasy” (‘The Poronin Festivities’) organized by the ‘Regle’ Friends of Podhale Culture Association and the ‘Regle’ regional band. The neighborhood of Bustryk holds the Bustrycanskie Nomowiny (‘The Bustryk Invitations’) presenting the tradition of the groom and his parents’ visit to the house of his bride in order to discuss the value of the bride’s dowry and the details of the wedding reception.

The yearly cultural events agenda always features the Gazda Parade, held in the Lichajowka Plains. There are also the Kumoterkas’ Parade and ski-ring racing – a must-see for anyone interested in regional fun.

Each August is the time when Poronin hosts the annual Bear, Honey and Bee-keepers’ Day – an event creating a perfect opportunity for all the bee-keepers of the region to meet and share what is best about their profession. The bear shown in the Poronin’s coat of arms is the grand patron of the event. In August, Nowe Bystre hosts Osod – the event for all sheep-keeping enthusiasts and Zab hosts its Strazacki spas – a perfect opportunity to witness the skill and bravery of the regional firefighting squads competing against one another.

Every autumn, Poronin hosts its Regional Food Competition for all the hostesses of the region. Their food ideas are always so original it makes it hard for the jury to come up with the winner.

Biały Dunajec Biały Dunajec – the municipality of Bialy Dunajec is located along the Gubalowka Range and the Spisz. This mountainous region rests between the Lower Tatra and the Orawa-Nowy Targ Valley.

The municipality consists of such villages as Bialy Dunajec, Gliczarow Dolny, Gliczarow Gorny, Leszczyny, and Sierockie. It covers the area of 35.5sq km and has a total population of 6700 people. As there are mostly woodless areas, plenty of long hillsides, and the period of snow present in the region is high above average, it is a perfect place for skiing fans. There are many ski-lifts located along the Stolowy and Gliczarow Gorny areas. These places, as many other in the region, are best to admire the panoramic views of the Tatra Mountains, the Gorce Mountains, and the Beskidy Mountains. The fact that you are surrounded by mountains on all sides makes the region a very popular place among tourists both in winter and summer. The municipality of Bialy Dunajec is located in the very heart of the region of Podhale (about 10kms away from Zakopane): with the dominating Tatras in the South and the Gorce Mountians in the North, and squeezed in between the Spisz and Orawa regions.

The people native to Bialy Dunajec are famous for their respect of tradition – hence their efforts to preserve their original native speech, customs, habits, music, dance, outfits, and architecture. These unique characteristics make the whole region unique and definitely worth visiting.

Bukowina Tatrzańska Bukowina Tatrzańska - The municipality is located at the border of two lands separated by the Bialka River – a powerful-current and crystal-clear river with its headwaters at the very heart of the Tatras.

Its left bank belongs to the Podhale region and the right one to the region of Spisz. The region is home to most of the highest peaks as well as places of unique beauty of the Tatras: the Morskie Oko Lake, Mt Rysy, the Five Polish Ponds Valley, the Grand Siklawa Waterfall, and the hardest of all Polish hiking trails- the Orla Perc Ridge.

The area attracts visitors all year long. In spring, summer, and autumn it offers a total of 210km of hiking trails. In winter time it becomes a kingdom of all skiers. To top it all, there are fantastic, modern thermal pools available all-year-round. The village of Bukowina Tatrzanska, with a number of pistes of various difficulty level, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Poland. It is here, where one of the most advanced thermal waters centers is located – the Terma Bukowina thermal water center – definitely one of the top venues of this kind in Europe. Bialka Tatrzanska, another village in the municipality, is a proud host to the biggest skiing center in Poland – the Kotelnica Bialczanska Skiing Center.

Other places where one can find a good slope to ski at include: Jurgow, Czarna Gora, and Brzegi. Bukowina Tatrzanska also plays host to a number of cultural events. It is home to a lot of regional artists cherishing the area’s folk culture.
