Earthen architecture
a North Africa N 06 > 09 October 2015 Semlalia Sciences Faculty Marrakesh
Cadi Ayyad University and the Semlalia Science Faculty Marrakesh Morocco Since thousand years, the human being uses the available materials to build its protective shelters. These natural materials were used with a constant improvement of the techniques and as a consequence of the adapted architectures. Following the rupture of this long evolution caused by the systematic use of industrialized materials, the vernacular constructive systems were abandoned by the actors of the construction. It is thanks to the existence of this building heritage that a renewed interest has been noted in these last years for these ancient techniques and materials. Indeed, considering their ecological, socio-economic, healthy and cultural qualities, as well as the aspects of comfort, they are becoming again a rational choice in the constructions. Among these materials and techniques, earth constructions are emblematic thanks to the versatility of its expressions, in particular considering in Northern Africa the rammed earth technique (tabout, louh, tabia, etc) recognized as well as one of the oldest and most wide diffused constructive systems of the world. Nevertheless the adobe, has to be added as traditional techniques and more recently the bricks of compressed earth. Today, 30% of the world population live in earthen buildings. This heritage has a strong symbolic value and it is carrying ecological and durable solutions to the shortage of affordable housing. Moreover it is also an ideal solution for a living comfort (thermal, hygrometric, acoustic, etc) without forgetting it’s esthetic quality. This meeting aims to create a sharing of information among the participants starting from the objectivity of a scientific study of the earth material and of the building techniques with the purpose to establish a solid assessment of its potential in the future.
