¡A Grito Pelado!
Happy Hour 9:00 pm - 12:00 pm Every Day
Road of Manuel Antonio, Quepos Phone: 2777-5107

THE TIDE/LA MAREA:
Si les digo que “perro que come huevos ni quemándole el hocico” por lo tanto el “agua que no has de beber, déjala correr”.

Hemos visto como “una cosa piensa el burro y otra el que lo arrea” sin embargo “al mal tiempo, buena cara”.

* Playita is the name given by locals to one of the beaches in Manuel Antonio which attracts a high concentration of gay and lesbians from Costa Rica and visitors from all over the world. This beach is accessible just two hours before and after high tide.

News from Playita By Tim Dwyer
I Â
am blessed in that when I wake up in the morning I can look out of my window onto the jungle. I can’t see the ocean, but I can feel the breezes pass through. Outside I see an array of trees and plants, some of which have been growing there for years, some which I planted. There are plantains, bananas, bamboo. There are trees that I know as ‘Guarumo’,(the tree that sloths like), Pe- ine de Mono,(monkey’s comb), ‘Huevos de Toro’ (bull’s balls) and ‘Tapa Culo’, (butt plug, no, not for that reason, but be- cause it is used to make a tea to stop di- arrhea). As well, I’ve been able to watch all sorts of bird species, White-Âfaced and Titi monkeys, the odd sloth and too many roosters, (but that’s another story).
ent and unique. Just like two trees of the same species will grow in different shapes and manners, or, as the saying goes that QR WZR VQRZĂ€DNHV DUH DOLNH VR WRR DUH ZH alike yet individual at the same time. How wonderful is that! Within Manuel Antonio and Quepos we are so very fortunate to have diversity in places to dine, drink, dance and ‘dormir’. I am always amazed to see the advertis- ers in Playita. It’s a wonderful mix of gay and straight owned businesses that offer us a wide variety of goods and services giving us choices that did not exist a few years ago. Not only here but elsewhere in the country, gay owned and gay friendly businesses are opening their doors to all of us within the community of diversity that we are. Â
Not only is there such diversity in nature, there is also a great diversity within hu- man beings and, as a sub category, within the gay and lesbian community. We all know the terms, leather man, muscle daddy, bear, twink, dyke, lipstick lesbian, etc. These may or may not categorize people into groups that we may or may not wish to identify ourselves. As well, these categories may distinguish tastes or preferences that people have. What this means is that in essence, we are all the same but we are also completely differ-Â
In Montreal, the pride celebrations are known as Divers/cite which connotes di- versity within the cultures;͞ English,French and diversity of people;͞ gay, bi, straight, transgendered. It is a celebration where all are welcome regardless of race, creed, sex, sexuality, size, shape, age, or predi- lection. Here in our community of Manu- el Antonio and Quepos we too must cele- brate this diversity in ourselves and in the model that Mother Nature has given us. Q 7

Fantasy and Reality

anuel Antonio is not for everyone. It is a beach town that caters to the parts of us that are lazy and aloof. I see families, lovers, and friends arrive here salivating for change. We live with an alternative lifestyle to not enough hours in a day, the “realitiesâ€? of life elsewhere seem so distant. I’ve heard from many that the over stimulation of nature....both jungle and ocean... make them feel so... free. It roots itself into the psyche because it is all around us, sleeping to jungle sounds make city dwellers feel like they are camping! In my 11 years here I have come to believe that Manuel Antonio operates on its own unique level. The level I am referring to is meditation. I believe Manuel Antonio forces us to be more aware of ourselves by changing the culture we are used to. Simply by alternating the repetition of day to day living, and the habits we are all used to, produces the opportunity for self- contemplation. This alone stimulates change. Change is is something, I have grown to believe through my massage work, most people are willfully fearful of. Don’t be! Why would humans be afraid of change when everything around them is changing....plants, weather, ocean tides, and the sun and moon cycles (to name a few). Do we actually believe ourselves not to be one with our environment? Are we evolved beyond that? I think not. However, in order to pick WKH IUXLW IURP D WUHH ZH PXVW ÂżUVW FXOWLYDWH WKH URRWV DQG WKH trunk. That means we must work with fears, frustrations, disappointments, and irritations, the painful aspects of life. 7KHQ LI ZH DUH OXFN\ ZH PLJKW EH DEOH WR SLFN WKH Ă€RZHUV from our beautiful gardens. 6XIIHULQJ DQG PLVHU\ LV DOO DURXQG XV :H PXVW ÂżUVW VHH WKH world and our life experience as it is. When we see the truth of suffering, and misery, we open the door to beauty, song, and yes, even ecstasy. When we ignore the painful aspects of maturing we only mask the true promised land. Even then, enlightenment is never attained. We are grounded in living situations that dreaming is only a temporary escape, real escape is impossible and not human. I believe Manuel Antonio can give us a sense of realism, especially when combined with meditation. which makes us better people. When we have space we can undo neurotic games, self-Âdeception, and our hidden fears and hopes. By doing nothing we give space for breathing. To not grasp anything too tightly is a meditative practice....give it a try. By letting things go, with a touch of discipline, we are ready. Too much or too little is wild and chaotic. Awareness of our selves is enough....breathing and neutrality can be challenging, yet enough.

I believe Manuel Antonio to be a gem of an environment for helping ourselves. I suggest everyone take at least a day to themselves in order to experiment. Many of the locals I know live this way not because of the tourist dollar, but because it is within them. Most of us will not compromise RXU ZD\ RI OLIH LQ RUGHU WR ¿W LQ RU WR VXLW RWKHU SHRSOHV projections. The pulse here is one of resilience, especially in the last few years. Extreme environmental damage, low numbers, and slow high seasons, in my opinion, has allowed the cream to rise to the top. Those left standing have much to offer. Our enjoyment is based on our own happiness, which we want to transfer to everyone we come in contact with. My life has blossomed because of you, the people reading this. We want all of you to taste health and freedom, if it is a day, a week, or a year. Welcome to Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica, and to a community that ÀLHV LWV ÀDJ RI SHDFH PXOWL FXOWXUDO XQGHUVWDQGLQJ DQG D freedom and acceptance of everyone. Leave with a tan and a smile on your face, then go spread paradise in your home town by living in the present, accepting hardships as reality, and sharing what you have learned. Pura Vida. Q

Sayings
over spilt milk) “The pretty wish they had the luck of the homely” (A jewel on the ugly, won’t make her lovely, but the lovely girl still wants her luck) or (Good girls go to heaven, but bad girls go everywhere)
osta Rica is a country with its own unique tradition and culture. One of the ways to participate in this culture is to learn and understand the sayings or “dichos” that ticos use to express themselves.
“A bird in the hand is better than a hundred in the air” (A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush) “A dog that eats eggs never stops even if you burn his mouth.” (Old habits are hard to break)
Some of these sayings are more popular than others and can vary based on geography and generation. All these phrases have specific and particular meanings that can get lost in translation. Below are the literal translations of common dichos followed by the English equivalent.
“If you are not going to drink the water, then let it run” (Live and let live, fairly take and fairly give) “What the donkey thinks is different than the rider”
“He who rises early, God helps him”. “The shrimp that falls asleep gets carried away in the current”. (The early bird gets the worm)
“Bad times, good face” (When the going gets tough, the tough get going)
“When you hear the river, the rocks will follow” (Where there’s smoke, there’s fire)
“To foolish words, deaf ears” (Talk to the hand)
“If you have a store, you should take care of it or sell it”.
“He who sows wind reaps the whirlwind.” (What goes around comes around)
(Always care about your flowers and your friends. Otherwise they’ll fade, and soon your house will be empty)
“From every bad thing there has to be some good that comes from it” (Every cloud has a silver lining)
“A soldier duly warned doesn’t die in war” (Forewarned is forearmed)
“Where the glove fits, that is where you stay” (If the shoe fits….) “What you do, you will pay for” (What goes around comes around)
“The devil knows more because he’s old, not that he is the devil”. (Old age and guile will overcome youth and skill)
“Every frog dies crushed” (Everyone gets what they deserve)
“To what has been done is done in the chest” (No use crying
“God helps those who help themselves” Q

The sun is much stronger than you think. PLEASE Take care about the tide, you can cross the rocks 2 hours before and/or 2 hours after the high tide (page 8), otherwise you may get hurt. Rocks are very dangerous in high tide period. YOU MUST Dress in a bathing suit. Nude bathing is restricted on the beaches. Police do patrol the beaches. BORED?
